Well, it's been a while since I have posted anything on this blog and for that I apologize. I have been very healthy for my entire life always working out heavily on weights, running 4+ miles daily on the beach and eating healthy and taking a host of helpful supplements. I have always felt healthy and generally did not fall victim to the newest cold making its rounds. I had an eye-opening experience that I wanted to tell you about and hopefully you will avoid a similar fate.

I lived on the beach in Daytona Beach, Florida and had been sitting on the sea wall when I decided to jump down and head inside. I suddenly felt a headache and thought I had thrown my back out even though I had never done that before. As I made it to the front door of my apartment I could tell the pain was getting rather severe. I laid down on the floor and left the door unlocked. Before I passed out I called 9-1-1.

It wasn't long until I was on my way to Halifax Medical Center. Once in the Emergency Room the doctor quickly assessed what was wrong with me and somehow realized I had a tear in my aorta. He called a thoracic surgeon who was on his way and told me to call my family because there was only a 10% chance I would survive long enough for the surgeon to get there and repair the hole in my aorta. He said I would bleed out before that probably.

I truly believed it was over for me but I was excited because I knew I would be in heaven in an hour or so and I would see God and Jesus. I was a little disappointed since I felt like I had so much more I wanted to do but I figured if I was dying it would be at the exact right time just as God had planned.

The last thing I remember was two orderlies running down the hallway one on each side of the gurney. They made the turn into the elevator and I was out presumably from the morphine they had injected me with while I was in the emergency room.

I woke up 12 days later from a medically induced coma. They had problems with stabilizing my blood pressure. They had stopped my heart for 7 and a half hours for the surgery. I stayed in the Cardiac Intensive Care unit for almost 4 weeks and when I could finally stand up with a walker and make it out of my room, there were 12 to 15 people applauding as I made it to the doorway of my room. One of the nurses that took care of me in the intensive care unit said he had seen a lot of people come and go out of the intensive care but he said he never thought he would see me up and moving.

The biggest problem that persisted was my memory. I would figure out something and the next day had completely forgotten it. When I first emerged from the coma I could not remember the alphabet so I could not spell any words. I could read words but I could not write words. It was very strange.

Slowly over time I began recovering in other areas. My memory was helped by a number of memory restoring supplements. A friend gave me a bottle of Prevagen which I took and It seemed to help. I also took a number of bottles of Neuro-Mag. Neuro-mag is Magnesium-L-Threonate

MIT found that memory loss was due to loss of connections between neurons in the brain. They found that they could increase the magnesium in the body but even a 300% increase in supplemental magnesium only produced a 19% increase in magnesium in the brain. Through extensive testing MIT eventually found that Magnesium-L-Threonate would increase the magnesium in the brain since it would cross the blood-brain barrier.

I still take this Neuro-Mag but I do notice slightly diminished effects when I run out of Neuro-Mag and don't take it for a month or so. Otherwise, it produces a noticeable increase in memory.

The New COPD Focus Group

In the coming weeks I will be starting the new COPD Focus Group. We will limit membership to those who are following the protocols set forth in the book,

This will not provide a forum for debating the validity of the protocols. I have watched them work and have been in direct contact with people of all ages including an 85 year old woman from Hawaii who have experienced the recovery it provided.

It is my belief that COPD is caused by a mycobacteria that grows naturally on tobacco leaves. When you light a cigarette you inhale the mycobacterial spores into your lungs. These mycobacterial spores embed themselves into your warm, moist lung tissue where they slowly grow and proliferate over decades before causing any noticeable problems for the patient. The first sign of problems is generally "shortness of breath" followed by "barrel chest" and eventually "End Stage Emphysema."

Do not ever feel like you're starting too late. My mother was in End Stage Emphysema, weighed only 77 pounds and was on 4 liters of continuous supplemental oxygen when I started her on these protocols out of desperation. I was out of options. She was gasping for air quite often on 4 liters and the oxygen concentrator only went to 5 liters.

The prescribed medications were relieving her symptoms for the day but then the next day the symptoms were back with no noticeable reduction in severity.

The only thing that provided any lasting improvement in her condition was the restrictive diet that starves the mycobacteria by taking away its food supply, and the proteolytic enzymes which strips away the protective covering on mycobacteria, and the beta glucan which amplifies the immune response thereby killing the mycobacteria directly.

We have all seen the advertisements on television where an elephant sits on the guy’s chest showing how hard it is for him to breathe with COPD. In the ad they claim, “Nothing can reverse COPD” yet that may not actually be true.

New evidence is showing that COPD might actually be reversible! Mounting evidence now exists that some specific alternative treatments are producing amazing results for thousands of people in 26 different countries and actually reversing their COPD and emphysema!

There is even a working hypothesis explaining why COPD and emphysema progress long after smoking cessation. The funny thing is, this new working hypothesis is completely logical and makes perfect sense especially when compared to what the medical industry is saying about the progression of COPD and emphysema.

The medical industry says they do not know why COPD and emphysema progress so long after smoking cessation. They say that it is a mystery. I asked my mother’s doctor why her emphysema was progressing more than 2 years after she had quit smoking.

His response,

“We simply do not know why emphysema progresses so long after the patient quits smoking. We do know if you take the prescribed medications they will slow the progress of the disease.”

I asked, “Will any of them stop the progress of my mother’s COPD and emphysema?” And he looked down to the floor and said, “No.”

The pharmaceutical companies are making $50 billion annually on the medications for treating COPD and emphysema so I doubt they are even looking for a cure or a way of stopping or reversing COPD and emphysema. It just wouldn’t be cost effective.

Diagnosed With COPD and Emphysema

My mother was diagnosed with COPD and emphysema in 2003. Her doctor prescribed a number of medications, Pulmonary Rehab twice a week and 4 nebulizer treatments daily with albuterol sulfate. He made no mention of the terminal nature of COPD and emphysema. They now call all terminal diseases “progressive.” I think people are more likely to take their medications if they have a “progressive” disease rather than a “terminal” disease. There again, it’s better for pharmaceutical profits to call terminal diseases, progressive.

End Stage Emphysema

I made charts for keeping track of all the medications and treatments she had been ordered to take each day by her two doctors. We did not miss one pill, nebulizer treatment or Pulmonary Rehab session yet after two and a half years she had deteriorated down to End Stage Emphysema. I had a medical person online tell me I did not know what End Stage was. The point he missed was that my mother’s Pulmonary Specialist had put “End Stage Emphysema” in her medical record and he definitely knows what it is.

Upon reaching End Stage Emphysema, my mother weighed only 77 pounds, required 4 liters of supplemental oxygen 24/7 and could only sleep for about an hour and even then, only if she was propped up on 4 pillows. After an hour or so she usually woke up in an exacerbation (extreme shortness of breath). I would have to talk her through her breathing exercises at 3 or 4 in the morning. She would only eat a cup of food at each meal. When I prompted her to eat more, she would tell me that if she did she could not breathe. This sounded like the lungs and stomach were competing for space. How could that be? Keep reading!

I realized my mother did not have much time left. I was making coffee at 11 pm so I could stay up all night checking on her every 10 or 15 minutes. This allowed lots of time for me to research COPD and emphysema.

Conventional Medicine – No Help to COPD Patients

By this time I realized the medical and pharmaceutical industries did not have any real solutions for reversing COPD and emphysema nor did they have any idea how to stop their progress, for that matter. They did not understand what was causing the disease progression so it is no surprise their treatments did nothing but temporarily mask the symptoms of COPD and emphysema.

I saw no slowing of the progress of my mother’s COPD and emphysema. In fact, I saw her deterioration accelerate the year she was given multiple prescriptions for prednisone, a steroid, and was already taking Advair which contained fluticasone, another steroid.

I asked her doctor why her COPD and emphysema were progressing in the absence of smoking. He first tried to snow me by stating that it might be alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. When I let him know that I had researched alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency and I was almost certain it was not that. He then told me that they just simply didn’t know why COPD and emphysema continued progressing long after the patient quit smoking. He said that it was a mystery.

Alternative Treatments for COPD and Emphysema

I noticed there was not much in the way of alternative treatments for COPD and emphysema nor was there any research that I could find that provided any hope.

I found a Naturopath that had kept his father alive with COPD and emphysema for 16 years. This was a start. I began applying some of the treatments he suggested. They provided a natural substitute for some of the prescription medications that had serious side-effects.

This Naturopath offered no answer to the big looming question of,

“What was causing the progression of COPD and emphysema?”

He did offer a few supplement suggestions which helped some but did not stop or reverse the disease so I continued researching.

What Causes the Progression of COPD

Without knowing what the cause of the progression of COPD and emphysema was, I saw no way of finding a treatment that would stop or reverse this disease. It seemed to me that you would have to understand what was causing this disease progression before you could realistically expect to find a treatment that would affect it. Otherwise, it is a total crap shoot.

The cause of any disease must be determined before a viable treatment protocol can be established. This is common sense. Yet we are asked every day to trust in drugs that were manufactured for COPD and emphysema by people that do not understand what is causing the progression of COPD and emphysema.

The conventional treatments the medical industry prescribes that were manufactured by the pharmaceutical industry temporarily mask the symptoms of COPD and emphysema. Treating the “effect” or symptom of any problem instead of treating the “cause” of the problem is a recipe for diseaster.

Imagine running into a burning building and turning off the fire alarm as a means of putting the fire out. People would think you were crazy yet we treat disease every day with these drugs which mask the symptoms while the building burns to the ground.

Some Amazing Alternative Medicine Researchers

My search for alternative treatments for treating my mother’s COPD and emphysema eventually led me to some amazing researcher who had made unbelievable advancements in the use of alternative treatments to actually “cure” disease. Some were treating cancer, some were treating heart disease, some asthma and still others providing a preventive optimal health approach to avoiding disease altogether.

The Microbiologist and Cancer Researcher I found at the University of Nevada School of Medicine was certainly credible and he was absolutely curing cancer for the last 15 years, yet nobody even knows he exists.

I found a practicing MD in New York City who is successfully curing asthma and allergies and has been for a number of years while other doctors continue prescribing asthma medications, keeping them in the potential group of 60,000 asthma patients that die every year instead of providing this doctor’s 8-step cure.

I found a researcher who details a fail safe method of making your body disease-proof. I found researchers detailing the difference between the therapeutic dose of a supplement and the dosage recommended by the FDA.

I found a famous Cardiologist who now recommends certain supplements at much higher dosages than the posted FDA’s “Recommended Daily Allowance”.

I found a Cancer Researcher who was using diet and certain supplements taken in a specific way to actually cure cancer!

I was absolutely amazed at some of the research and researchers I found in my 4 and a half years of research. During this time I gathered 30,000 pages of information that I began sorting through. I also had the chance to closely observe my mother’s deterioration very closely. I noticed that as her meal size decreased her supplemental oxygen requirement increased. As I mentioned much earlier in this article, it appeared the lungs and stomach were competing for space. When she got down to only 77 pounds she was only eating about a cup of food at each meal. When I prompted her to eat more she would tell me that if she ate more she couldn’t breathe! Her stomach and lungs were never competing for space before! What is going on? (See if this doesn’t make more sense than what the doctors and nurses are telling you!)

Hypothesis Describing the Cause of the Progression of COPD and Emphysema

After a number of years of research and observation I developed a hypothesis which, I believe, describes the cause of the progression of COPD and emphysema. My hypothesis states that,

“Smoking introduces a pathogen into the lungs which then proliferates very slowly over decades until it causes major medical problems. As this pathogen proliferates it begins occupying lung volume the patient needs for gas exchange (breathing). The body adapts by distending the lungs in an attempt to create additional lung volume. The pathogen then grows into those areas. This back and forth goes on for decades until causing the condition common to COPD patients known as Barrel Chest. The distending lungs eventually crowd the stomach making normal-sized meals impossible!”

There it is! The reason the lungs and the stomach are competing for the same space as this disease progresses is because the pathogen has proliferated into the additional lung volume created by the distended lungs. As the meals get smaller and smaller, severe weight loss occurs. We have all seen these people sitting in their wheelchairs with their oxygen cannula in their noses and looking like “skin and bones.” At this point, the patient is not too far from End Stage Emphysema or Stage IV COPD.

I began treating my mother’s COPD and emphysema as if it were a pathogen that had entered the lungs from smoking cigarettes and was still proliferating even though she had quit smoking more than 2 years earlier.

I realized that if this was a pathogen like I was thinking it was, anti-pathogenic treatments should cause her condition to improve. If the progression of COPD and emphysema is not due to a pathogen entering the lungs through smoking then these anti-pathogenic treatments would do nothing and my mother would not survive. I realized that under the doctors’ care she would die anyway so we truly had nothing to lose and everything to gain. All the evidence I had compiled over more than 4 years of observing my mother pointed to this disease progression being the result of a pathogen in th lungs. I was very hopeful.

One of the Cancer Researchers I found stated that cancer was a pathogen and he had developed a diet that would starve pathogens. I immediately adopted the diet for my mother. This same researcher was providing his patients with supplements that restored the immune system.

I followed suit once again providing my mother with this supplement. He also gave his patients supplements that would amplify the newly restored immune system and supplements that would tear away the protective protein covering present on all pathogens.

I found other supplements that would treat the symptoms without side-effects, essentially taking the place of dangerous and very expensive drugs. I found supplements that would directly attack the pathogen and a novel approach of preventing the pathogen from adapting to the treatments.

After 17 months of relentlessly sticking to a restrictive diet as well as taking a host of supplements multiple times each day my mother had completely recovered from COPD and emphysema!

She could eat a full plate of food with no distress and had regained all of her lost weight! She no longer needed any supplemental oxygen even at night and could sleep through the night without waking! She was fully coherent and no longer seemed like she was in a daze! She was alert and able to drive a car for the first time in more than 6 years! She hadn’t driven a car since a few years before before her COPD diagnosis!

I shared this information with a friend of mine who had suffered with asthma for nearly 40 years. A little over a year later he is off of all medications and can go outside for the whole day without a sneeze. He said for the first time in his life he lays down to go to sleep and he is not wheezing.

After his recovery he insisted I write a book detailing these treatments for the millions of people suffering and dying from COPD and its related diseases every year. I did finally complete the book and it is now in its 3^rd edition. The book is titled, “How I Reversed My Mom’s Emphysema” and has now sold in 26 countries and is available on Amazon and Amazon Europe.

I had gathered over 30,000 pages of information in my research. I said many prayers asking God to help me locate something in my giant stack of research that would help my mother. The Cause and Effect of COPD and Other Diseases

It is no secret that there is a “cause” and “effect” to all disease states. Most thinking people have realized that prescription and over-the-counter medications address the “effect” of these disease states but not the underlying “cause” of the disease state condition and for this reason are ineffective.

Why the Pharmaceutical Approach of Treating the Symptoms (“Effects”) of Disease Does Not Work!

Imagine if you had a clogged drain and a leaky faucet in your sink. Every morning you would have to mop the kitchen floor and scoop water out of the full sink and pour it in the yard. The “cause” or “causes” of the problem are the clogged drain and the leaky faucet. The “effect” in this case, is the increased water bill and the wet kitchen floor.

If the “cause” of the problem is not addressed, the problems will progress. The leaky faucet may be leaking because of a worn out washer which will disintegrate further over time making the leak progressively worse over time.

If we continue addressing only the “effect” of the clogged drain and the leaky faucet we will eventually be mopping the entire floor and eventually we will awaken to a completely flooded kitchen.

If we addressed part of the problem, namely the clogged drain, we would eliminate the major part of the problem only leaving the increased water bill. If we then put new washers in the faucet eliminating the leak altogether, the problem is solved and no longer progressing to a further deteriorated state.

Treating disease in civilized society is exactly like this clogged sink. As we discussed earlier, there is a “cause” and “effect” to the disease state and medications treat the “effect” but not the “cause” of the disease. Like the wet kitchen floor that gets worse over time, the disease state gets worse over time if all we are doing is treating the “effect” of the disease.

Why Treating the Symptoms of COPD With Medications Does Not Stop the Disease from Progressing

In the treatment of COPD and emphysema, the excuse for treating the “effects” of COPD instead of treating the “cause” of COPD is that they do not know what “causes” COPD to progress. They do know that smoking is generally the “cause” or reason you have the disease but they have no idea why COPD progresses even after you quit smoking.

When I asked my mother’s doctor why her COPD and emphysema were progressing after she quit smoking two and a half years earlier he replied, “We don’t know. It’s a mystery!”

The Cause and Effect of COPD and Emphysema

Since we know the prescription medications are only treating the “effects” of COPD and not the “cause” of COPD, we understand and realize that we must do something, in addition to these drugs, if we expect to survive this disease.

We know the primary “cause” of COPD is either smoking or being in the presence of second-hand smoke. In addition, our diet and overall health are a big influence on how quickly COPD progresses.

Many doctors still stick to the old adage that, “If you eat healthy you do not need to take vitamins.” This is patently untrue and it becomes blatantly obvious when we look at recommended daily allowances for nutrients and then also take a look at the “therapeutic” dosages of those required nutrients.

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) recommends 1200 mg of omega-3 per day however, the American Heart Association stated that 4000 mg of omega-3 per day will reduce your risk of heart disease by 30%.

Why Nutritional Supplements Are Necessary for Achieving and Maintaining Optimal Health

One of the most common prescription medications on the market for the last 50+ years is antibiotics. It is very difficult to find someone who has not taken an antibiotic at some time in their life. When we take antibiotics they kill the bad bacteria they are supposed to kill but they also kill our “beneficial” bacteria which reside in our small and large intestines. These beneficial bacteria are called probiotics.

Probiotics make up 70% - 80% of our immune systems (depending on who you listen to) and once they are gone we are missing an extremely important element necessary for achieving optimal health. It is next to impossible to ward off colds and floes with 70% -80% of our immune systems missing and even harder to prevent pathogens from entering our bodies with our probiotics or “gate keeper” missing. These pathogens include cancer, bacteria, viruses and fungi.

There are two types of fungi. Pathogenic fungi are immediately recognized by our immune system if it has not been compromised by antibiotic use. Granulocytosis occurs and the pathogenic fungi is eliminated.

The other type of fungi is the most dangerous. They are called “opportunistic” fungi since they emulate human cells and go undetected by our immune system. If our immune system has been compromised by antibiotic use, the probability of it going undetected by our immune system increases dramatically.

These opportunistic fungi not only emulate human cells so they are not attacked, they also adapt to treatments very quickly. For this reason, when ridding your body of an opportunistic fungi it is important to change the treatment protocol on a regular basis every month or so. These opportunistic fungi proliferate very slowly and may take years, or even decades, before causing serious problems for the host.

Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungi. After antibiotic use, this fungi often grows out of control causing dysbiosis in your body which may cause thrush (white coating on the inside of the mouth) or a yeast infection or could manifest into something more serious. Your probiotics normally keep Candida albicans in check but since they have been destroyed by the antibiotics, there is nothing keeping Candida albicans, or the other opportunistic fungi, under control.

Is The Progression of COPD Truly a Big Mystery?

I felt certain that my mother’s worsening condition due to her COPD was not some big mystery like her doctors claimed. The disease progression of COPD has every characteristic of a pathogen proliferating in the lungs.

I felt certain that if this pathogen were cancer, the doctors would have found it with all their tests.

I felt certain that if it were a virus it would have caused an elevated white blood cell count which would have been determined by a blood test.

I felt certain that it could not be a bacteria remembering all the antibiotics she had been given for lung infections.

That only left pathogenic fungi and opportunistic fungi.

I think if it were a pathogenic fungi it would proliferate quickly like a week after you start smoking, but it doesn’t. Nobody is diagnosed with COPD the week after they start smoking! This pathogen usually takes decades before it is noticeable to the smoker that they have a breathing problem, usually shortness of breath which is termed an exacerbation.

For this reason, and a few I’ll cover below, I think this pathogen that is proliferating in the lungs causing the progression of COPD and all the COPD related diseases like chronic bronchitis, asthma and emphysema, is an opportunistic fungi that enters the lungs through smoking or breathing second-hand smoke.

Everyone has heard,

“If it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck, it’s a duck!”

If there is a pathogen in the lungs causing the progression of COPD, then it should act like a pathogen. And if this pathogen is an opportunistic fungi then:

It would take decades before it proliferated enough and occupied a large portion of the patient’s lung volume before supplemental oxygen was necessary.
It would slowly proliferate in the lungs causing the body to adapt by distending the lungs. It would then proliferate more causing further lung distention. This back and forth would continue for decades eventually resulting in the condition common to COPD patients known as “Barrel Chest.”
After decades of proliferating, it would cause the distending lungs to crowd the stomach making normal-sized meals impossible. This would cause weight loss that would become drastic in End Stage Emphysema or Stage IV COPD.
A restrictive diet developed by Dr. Kenneth Hunter to starve cancer, a pathogen, would also starve this pathogen, the opportunistic fungi that I was beginning to think was causing the progression of my mother’s COPD and emphysema. Dr. Hunter is a Microbiologist and Cancer Researcher at the University of Nevada School of Medicine in Reno.

The amazing thing was that this diet, developed by Dr. Hunter, produced the very first signs of improvement in my mother’s condition! The initial improvements were very subtle but I was excited to know with each bit of improvement, we were proving the Opportunistic Fungi Theory of COPD Progression.

I was very happy realizing that if this was an opportunistic fungi, it could be killed. This diet I had borrowed from Dr. Hunter was apparently starving this pathogen by taking systemic sugar out of the diet. Your body needs sugar to function but any excess sugar that you eat that is not carried across the cell membrane by insulin, circulates systemically, feeding every pathogen in your body. What do these pathogens eat? Sugar! In fact, cancer cells have more than 90 receptors on each cell for sugar.

I found this diet without a moment to spare. When my mother was diagnosed with COPD and emphysema two and a half years earlier, she appeared healthy with a normal body weight, she ate normal-sized meals, she could sleep through the night and she did not need any supplemental oxygen.

When I found Dr. Hunter’s diet and started her and I on it, she weighed only 77 pounds, she was on 4 liters of continuous supplemental oxygen on an oxygen concentrator that only went to 5 liters, she was only able to eat about a cup of food for her meals or she couldn’t breathe and she was only able to sleep for about an hour before waking in the middle of an exacerbation which is an extreme shortness of breath episode.

Needless to say, the improvements I saw just from Dr. Hunter’s diet were like a Godsend to me! I knew my mother did not have much time left unless we did something other than the prescription drugs that stopped working in End Stage Emphysema anyway!

At this stage I had been staying up all night for about a year and a half so I could check on my mother every 10 or 15 minutes. I was worried she would stop breathing during the night and I would find her the next morning after having a nice restful sleep. I couldn’t stand thinking about how much of a nightmare that would be so I started just staying up. I would make a pot of coffee at 11:30 pm and start researching. While downloads were going on I could walk in and check on her.

Improvements from Diet vs Improvements from Medications

One thing I noticed after getting her started on Dr. Hunters diet was that even though the improvements were subtle, they were permanent! This allowed us to build upon them every day even though individually they were small.

The problem with the improvements she experienced from taking the drugs was that the improvements were only temporary. It was obvious after a while that the drugs were doing nothing but masking symptoms short-term while the disease was blazing on!

This is precisely the “smoke and mirrors” approach used by the medical industry that had resulted in End Stage Emphysema for my mother. This was nothing more than deception. My mother believed her doctor was helping her improve and survive this disease. He was not! Could the Progression of COPD be Caused by a Pathogen in the Lungs from Smoking?

The “unknown pathogen in the lungs” theory was beginning to make more sense to me than what the doctors were saying about the COPD disease progression. As my mother’s health improved little by little, we convinced the doctor to run the tests that had originally indicated prescribing the drug in the first place. In this way, we let the doctor take her off the drugs one at a time. The only exception was some of the COPD medications and treatments which my mother took herself off of.

End Stage Emphysema

In End Stage Emphysema the drugs and treatments stopped working, one by one. First was the albuterol sulfate in the nebulizer. My mother eventually refused to use the nebulizer saying it did not do anything any more. I called her doctor and he switched her from albuterol sulfate to DuoNeb which was albuterol sulfate with ipratropium bromide. Ipratropium bromide is the drug they put in the Combivent rescue inhaler and probably some of the others. I knew this carried the potential of bromide toxicity so it seemed dangerous to add more of this drug to her daily regimen.

The DuoNeb stopped working shortly after that and she stopped using the nebulizer altogether. Next to go was the Spiriva. After that was the Advair and last was the Combivent. They all stopped working in about a 6 month period.

When my mother first started getting the Combivent it would last a month and a half or so. The last one she used lasted only 3 or 4 hours. She was using it over and over and getting no relief from it! It was very hard to watch her struggle so much for air and not be able to help her. Watching these drugs stop providing the temporary relief they once had worried me even more. The oxygen concentrator that maxed out at 5 liters was already set on 4 liters and my mother was gasping for air!

Eliminating the Need for Supplemental Oxygen

Now here we were two and a half years later and she no longer needed any supplemental oxygen. I reasoned that it was because the pathogen that had once proliferated and occupied a large portion of her lung volume was now dead and no longer occupied any of her lung volume.

She carried around a portable oxygen tank for almost a month but never needed to turn it on. She had also re-gained the 26 pounds she had lost since her diagnosis. She was now able to sleep through the night and eat full meals again, unlike the sleepless nights and tiny little meals she had eaten when she was in End Stage.

“Barrel Chest” Condition - Explained

I realized the other conditions she had experienced during her illness could also be explained logically based on this unknown pathogen theory. As the pathogen proliferated in her lungs, her body adapted by distending the lungs. The pathogen then proliferated more and the body adapted again distending the lungs even further. This back and forth between the pathogen proliferating and the lungs distending may have been continuing for years or even decades and was most likely responsible for the condition common to COPD patients known as “Barrel Chest.”

Eventually the distending lungs crowd the stomach making normal-sized meals impossible. This was the reason for her meal size decreasing as the disease progressed. My mother would eat these tiny little meals (about a cup of food) and when I would prompt her to eat more she would tell me that if she ate any more she could not breathe. Why? Expanding the stomach with food, even a little bit, would crowd the lungs, that were now distended, and make breathing even more difficult. This is apparently a common occurrence among patients who have deteriorated down to End Stage Emphysema or Stage 4 COPD.

The patient is eventually unable to eat enough food to maintain normal body functioning or weight and subsequently starves to death. They generally call this heart failure but I believe the heart fails as a result of starvation.

How I Reversed My Mom’s Emphysema

I wrote a book that details each and every step I took in reversing my mother’s emphysema. There are two primary steps. Verifying the Unknown Pathogen Theory of COPD Progression

This would explain why my mother needed more and more supplemental oxygen as time went on. As the disease progressed, the pathogen continued proliferating, occupying more and more of her lung volume and leaving less and less lung volume for her to use for breathing thus the supplemental oxygen requirement had gone up and up and up.

Do Medications Actually Slow the Progress of COPD?

This all seemed very logical, especially since the medical industry had given me their opinion through 2 of their well-trained doctors which was, “we don’t know what causes COPD to progress. It’s a mystery.” They would then follow up with, “We do know these medications and treatments will slow the progress of COPD.”

This I seriously doubted since it was the pharmaceutical companies who had spent hundreds of millions of dollars developing these COPD medications who were then given the task of testing them to show they worked. Does this seem a little fishy to you because it sure does to me? Isn’t that like the fox watching the hen house?

Where are All the Alternative Treatments for COPD?

I had been researching COPD and emphysema since my mother’s diagnosis. There was very little in the way of alternative treatments for COPD or emphysema. Once I realized that this disease progression was quite possibly the result of some unknown pathogen proliferating in the lungs, I began looking in other areas of alternative treatments. I was looking for research done on other diseases that I thought I might be able to apply to my mother’s emphysema and COPD.

I eventually found Dr. Kenneth Hunter, a Microbiologist and Cancer Researcher at the University of Nevada School of Medicine in Reno. Dr. Hunter was treating cancer by first putting patients on a very restrictive diet.

This diet was not calorie-restrictive but “content” restrictive. By that I mean, Dr. Hunter eliminated all sugar from the diet including fruit, honey, molases and anything else with a sweet flavor. He also eliminated all grains from the diet like bread, cereal and pasta since they are converted to sugar quickly in the body. Even whole grain bread was eliminated because of its high glycemic load. For a quick understanding of glycemic load take a look at the article below from the Harvard School of Public Health.

Carbohydrates and the Glycemic Load

This left only meats, fish and vegetables. Dr. Hunter stated that cancer was a pathogen and that this pathogens’ food supply was sugar. He said that each cancer cell had more than 90 receptors for sugar. The diet he developed, essentially starved these cancer cells.

I started thinking, if cancer is a pathogen and this diet starves it, and since I was starting to believe the disease progression of COPD might be the result of a pathogen, then this diet should also starve this pathogen growing in my mother’s lungs. Well, it made sense logically but I was skeptical since in my desperate situation, I thought maybe I was filling in too many blanks with nothing but circumstantial evidence in an effort to support this pathogen theory.

Realizing that “the proof is in the pudding,”I immediately started my mother and I on Dr. Hunter’s diet hoping for some positive results! I figured we had nothing to lose. My mother was going to die unless I did something other than depend on these drugs and nebulizer treatments.

COPD Recovery Begins

It took about 10 days before we had transitioned completely to Dr. Hunter’s diet. The amazing thing for me was two weeks later when I noticed my mother’s first improvement since her diagnosis! It was a subtle improvement but it was a giant milestone in my eyes!

My mother would always get up in the morning after she smelled the coffee I was brewing. By the time she walked out of her bedroom, across the dining room and into the kitchen she would be gasping for air while on 4 liters of supplemental oxygen.

This day she was in no distress when she arrived in the kitchen. I was so thrilled when I saw these improvements, I can’t even describe the feeling but I was energized realizing there was a strong possibility that my mother’s COPD progression was, in fact, the result of a pathogen that had entered her lungs through cigarette smoking. Maybe the progression of COPD was not this big mystery the doctors thought it was after all.

No wonder the doctors’ prescription drugs and treatments did not stop the disease progression. They didn’t know what was causing this disease progression and it didn’t seem like they had spent much time trying to figure out this big mystery either. Now with a little bit of thought and logic and a change to a restrictive diet, my mother was showing her first signs of improvement since her diagnosis two and a half years earlier!

Complete Recovery from COPD

From then on I noticed small incremental improvements in my mother’s condition every week! During this period I added a number of supplements each with its own function in the healing process.

High quality supplements restored the immune system, amplified the immune response, stripped away the protective protein covering present on every pathogen, alkalized the body, reduced inflammation (one of the two primary symptoms of emphysema), and one of a cycled set of 4 anti-pathogenic supplements designed to systematically kill the weakened pathogen.

There were other supplements with less definitive purposes like CoQ10 but all were included for their specific healing effects.

Seventeen months after starting the restrictive diet she had completely recovered! She no longer needed any supplemental oxygen, she had re-gained the 26 pounds she had lost since her diagnosis, she ate full meals and slept through the night!

Once again, she seemed like the mom we had lost 15 years earlier when she began taking statin drugs for cholesterol and other drugs for dementia and osteoporosis. She was now off of almost all of her medications only leaving Keppra for seizures and a heart medication which I knew we would have her off of soon.

I did not take her off of her medications. I put her on the restrictive diet I borrowed from Dr. Hunter and verified through Dr. Fuhrman and Dr. Pescatore, and gave her specific nutritional supplements which started her return to optimal health.

One by one I added a list of supplements each with their own specific function in either killing this pathogen that I was still not sure even existed, or returning her body to optimal health.

I truly do not understand the arrogance of the medical industry personnel. I mean, I would understand if 98% of the known diseases had been cured by their drugs and treatments however, the truth is that not one single drug has ever cured a disease.

Do COPD Medications Work?

Instead, drugs only mask symptoms temporarily while the disease blazes on. This is termed “managing” your disease. Nowhere is this more evident than with conventional treatments for COPD. Not one of the drugs or treatments the medical industry prescribes will even stop the progress of COPD yet they continue to scoff at anyone suggesting that nutritional supplements extracted from whole food might provide some actual healing.

Side-effects of Medications

Many people are injured and die every year by the side-effects of prescription and over the counter medications. In addition, preventable medical errors are said to be the third leading cause of death in the United States. These are errors and mistakes made by the medical industry personnel in hospitals, treatment centers and doctors’ offices. COPD drug advertisements continue claiming that COPD is the third leading cause of death in the United States in an attempt at hiding the truth. The fact is, COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States behind medical errors which are third! To me this is appalling! No wonder they try and hide this fact!

According to Consumer Health, “Some 106,000 Americans die every year as a result of unexpected complications due to adverse drug reactions from their medications.”

Knowing this fact, it is beyond me why anyone would participate in a drug trial. They are using these patients as guinea pigs to find out if this new drug causes any side-effects (which all drugs do) and whether these side-effects are permanent and/or debilitating.

Dr. Warburg Proves the Necessity for Live Enzymes

Have you ever heard of Dr. Warburg? Dr Otto Warburg essentially proved that a diet deficient in live enzymes causes an increase in the size of hemoglobin from 4 microns to 7 microns. The increased size prevents them from entering many different cells and as a result, they develop serious problems which can result in cancer. Dr. Warburg won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1931 for his findings. Since live enzymes cannot be patented, no one advertises this fact. Here we see nutrition, not drugs, provide the “cure” for this problem which, if not remediated, could result in cancer.

Healing Properties of Nutritional Supplements

High quality supplements are concentrated extracts from whole food not chemicals synthetically produced in a pharmaceutical lab. I agree with Dr. Rueben, M.D. who states in his book, “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Nutrition”, that in regards to the difference between natural phytonutrient extracts from whole food and synthetic, chemical-based concoctions, Dr. Reuben stated, “make no mistake, your body knows the difference.”

Cure for All Chronic Diseases

I also agree with Dr. Fuhrman, an MD who has a program on PBS where he introduces the same diet I used in reversing my mother’s emphysema and COPD and the diet I borrowed from Dr. Hunter. Dr. Fuhrman says this diet is the “cure for all chronic diseases.” Remember, these are not my words, they are Dr. Fuhrman’s words.

The Allergy and Asthma Cure

Have you ever heard of Dr. Fred Pescatore? Dr. Pescatore is a practicing MD in New York City who wrote the book, “The Allergy and Asthma Cure.” Dr. Pescatore uses essentially the same diet Dr. Hunter and Dr. Fuhrman use to “cure” allergies and asthma!

If you suffer with either allergies or asthma I would be willing to bet your doctor has you on daily medications for these ailments and I would also bet your doctor has never heard of Dr. Pescatore or his book and he is one of their own! Dr. Pescatore is CURING these illnesses, not “managing” them with daily drugs that keep you sick and make the pharmaceutical companies rich!

In light of the fact that the medical industry does not have a cure for even one disease, you would think they would want to hear about anyone who was seeing success with any alternative treatment for COPD, or any other disease, that causes some actual healing and a permanent improvement in the patient’s condition. After all, that would be in the best interest of their patients. However, their arrogance is such that they believe, if they do not have the cure then no one does! If they cannot reverse COPD then no one can! This is in light of the fact that their drugs have NEVER cured or reversed any disease! As far as COPD goes, their drugs cannot even stop the progress of the disease.

The "Cause" and "Effect" of Disease

As practicing MD’s and DO’s are finding out, many natural supplements provide phytonutrients that actually heal the body by addressing the “cause” of the disease not just the “effect” of the disease which is the symptoms their drugs suppress.

As most people now know, suppressing symptoms temporarily with drugs will not produce lasting improvements in the patient’s overall condition since it only treats the “effects” of the disease and does not address the “cause” of the disease! This is like turning the fire alarm off in a burning building as a means of treating the fire. Obviously, this approach will not produce positive results!

Doctors Give Up on COPD Patients

I watched my mother go from a healthy individual with no supplemental oxygen requirement down to End Stage Emphysema in a two and a half year period under the care of two doctors and while taking 7 different medications! When she got to this point, these two doctors, whom she trusted dearly, began scheduling her every 6 months instead of every 3 months like they had been doing since her diagnosis.

It was obvious they had given up on her and did not expect to see her again or at the very most, one more time. The thing was, I made sure my mother did every single thing the doctors ordered which included taking all the medications at various times throughout the day and doing 4 nebulizer treatments each day. She was also sent to Pulmonary Rehab twice a week which I took her to and watched her do the exercises each time.

Even though we had done every single thing the doctors said to do, she deteriorated down to only 77 pounds and was gasping for air on 4 liters of supplemental oxygen on an oxygen concentrator that only went up to 5 liters. I saw in her medical record where the doctor had written “End Stage Emphysema.” That is when I knew I had to do something and fast or my mother was not going to survive COPD.

I could see, without a doubt, the medical and pharmaceutical industries had no solutions for stopping the progression of COPD nor did they have a clue how to reverse COPD and emphysema. This was mainly because they had no idea what was causing the progression of COPD.

Since my mother had quit smoking when she was diagnosed and now, two and a half years later, she was noticeably worse without any smoking, it seemed obvious to me that the progression of COPD might be the result of some sort of pathogen that entered her lungs through smoking and was now proliferating in her lungs making her worse and worse as the months went by.

If this was true, it would certainly provide a more logical explanation as to why quitting smoking does not stop the progression of COPD; could it be because the pathogen is still in the lungs proliferating and therefore, increasing the amount of lung volume it occupies?

Research Supports Reversal of Emphysema and COPD

With the medical and pharmaceutical industries claiming that emphysema, COPD and chronic bronchitis are terminal diseases and the best a patient can do once diagnosed is slow the disease progression with medications, it is important that I provide the titles of books and the research that allowed the complete reversal of my mother's emphysema.

First of all I noticed that even though my mother had quit smoking her emphysema had continued progressing. She was taking more than $1000 worth of drugs and treatments every month yet her condition had deteriorated down to Stage IV or End Stage emphysema. At that time my mother required 4 liters of supplemental oxygen and weighed only 77 pounds. I noticed she could only eat a fraction of the amount of food that she had eaten a mere two years earlier. She said if she ate any more she couldn't breathe.

She could only sleep for about an hour at a time before waking in the middle of an exacerbation gasping for air. Eventually she was gasping for air most of the time. Even when she would walk from her bedroom across the dining room and into the kitchen she would have trouble talking until she caught her breath.

I saw that the oxygen concentrator machine only went up to 5 liters and could not be adjusted any further as this was the maximum this machine could produce. The oxygen concentrator machine takes air from the room and separates oxygen from it and then sends that oxygen out through the breathing tube attached to the patient's nose or mouth. In my mother's case she wore a cannula in her nose through which she received this pure oxygen. I realized that I should adjust the machine up to 5 liters but hesitated knowing it was the last setting.

On her next visit to her doctor I asked why her emphysema was progressing in the absence of smoking explaining that she had not smoked in more than two years yet her emphysema was progressing continuously through that period. I explained that I understood emphysema was caused by smoking but that smoking had been removed from the equation and was no longer a factor in her worsening condition. The doctor eventually told me that it was a mystery as to why emphysema progressed long after smoking cessation.

I had taken notes over the previous two years and noticed that as her supplemental oxygen requirement had increased her meal size had decreased. I realized that she had quit smoking yet her emphysema had progressed unchecked throughout that time period. It seemed obvious that there was something growing in her lungs. Some unknown pathogen was proliferating in her lungs and her body was adapting by distending her lungs creating additional breathing volume for her. This all made perfect sense but what pathogen was proliferating in her lungs and how could I stop it and then how could I kill it.

Cancer Research Provides the Key
I found Pathology textbooks stating that the food supply for all pathogens that invade the body was sugar. This included cancer, fungi, viral cells and bacterial cells. I found cancer research at the University of Nevada School of Medicine under the direction of Dr. Kenneth Hunter that even said cancer cells have 90+ receptor sites on each cell for sugar. This successful cancer research had been ongoing for more than 15 years and was very convincing.

My mother was in such bad shape by that time, I was staying up all night so I could check on her every few minutes. I immediately removed the sugar from her diet and any foods that would convert to sugar in only a few biochemical steps like potatoes, bread, cereal, essentially any simple carbohydrates or foods made with grains.

My Mother Improves Almost Immediately
Within two weeks the improvement in my mother's condition was noticeable enough that she realized it and so did my brother. I continued her on this diet and expanded my search for more research or books that might have some additional helpful information that I could apply to my mother's emphysema and COPD. I soon found Dr. Fred Pescatore, M.D., a New York City physician. Dr. Pescatore had written a book, "The Allergy and Asthma Cure" which outlined his 8-step cure for allergies and asthma. Not surprisingly, the diet I already had my mother on was almost identical to the one he recommends for his allergy and asthma patients.

Additional Research and Books Provide Additional Improvement

Dr. Pescatore also recommended a high-quality, enteric coated probiotic that included prebiotic formula (food for the probiotics) and also included both the Lactobacillus strains for replenishing the small intestines and Bifidobacterium strains for replenishing the large intestines.

According to research, as well as Dr. Pescatore, Dr. Mercola and many other prominent physicians, probiotics make up a substantial portion of our immune systems, 70% -80% depending on who you believe. Naturally, if you are fighting a debilitating disease you need a fully functioning immune system. I immediately purchased the high quality probiotics that Dr. Pescatore recommends.

Complete Recovery from COPD and Emphysema

I found research telling of the mucolytic properties of N-acetyl-l-cysteine, or NAC which eliminated the problem of excess mucus production. I found research in the British Medical Journal detailing how omega-3 fatty acids would reduce inflammation, another serious problem for emphysema and COPD patients. I found a book by Dr. Baroody, "Alkalize or Die" explaining how disease was a result of acid residue and that disease could not exist "en vitro" or "en vivo" in an alkaline environment so I gave my mother 2 different supplements that pushed her body to a more alkaline pH.

I found supplements used by the cancer researchers mentioned above that would tear away the protective covering on pathogenic cells and another one that would amplify the immune response which I put my mother on immediately.

I found a Mayo Clinic researcher that helped cure my mother's severe migraines through his sinusitis research published in 1999 that her doctor still has not read or heard about.

Her doctor prescribed antibiotics for her sinusitis which, according to Clinical Mycology textbooks, "ensure the chronicity of fungal infections." In essence, he made the infection worse with antibiotics. I found a book by Dr. Green, "Natural Therapies for Emphysema and COPD" which provided some additional information on supplements that would provide healing for my mother.

All in all, it took 17 months but my mother completely recovered from End Stage Emphysema. She no longer needed any supplemental oxygen, she could eat a full meal with no distress, she could sleep through the night without waking, she re-gained all of her lost weight and she could stand up straight and drive a car, something she had not done in more than 6 years!

Research Shows Negative Effects of COPD Medications

Two studies out of British Columbia on Spiriva, a common drug prescribed to emphysema and COPD patients, showed very negative results. One told of increased urinary problems caused by Spiriva and the other showed that patients taking Spiriva had more hospital stays and doctor visits than their counterparts not taking Spiriva. Naturally, the drug company that produces Spiriva complained and you probably never heard about these very negative results linked directly to Spiriva by these studies.

This statement appears at the bottom of the Advair advertisement on WebMd.

“It is not known how anti-inflammatories work in COPD.”

I can tell you how they work, they reduce inflammation however, Advair contains salmeterol, a corticosteroid. I believe this drug, along with prednisone, are the two culprits that accelerated my mother's emphysema and almost killed her! Logical COPD and Emphysema Treatments That Work

When my mother was diagnosed with emphysema and COPD I made sure she took all her medications and did all of her nebulizer treatments right on time every day. I am sure most of you did the same. I was not interested in looking at or reading about alternatives to the medications because I thought they were working to either stop the progress of the disease or cure it.

Current Emphysema and COPD Medications

After researching the current medications prescribed for emphysema and COPD I was surprised when I realized the new medications that are still under patent do not stop the progress of the disease and so, naturally, they do not cure the emphysema and COPD either.

I had worked in a hospital more than 20 years earlier and the medications they used then did not stop the progress of the emphysema and COPD but I thought surely by now they would have figured out what was causing the disease progression and developed medications that would at least stop its progression but they had not. I guess it is true, there is no money in curing emphysema and COPD, only in treating or "managing" these diseases.

After two and a half years of not smoking, my mother was in End Stage emphysema, on 4 liters of continuous supplemental oxygen and weighed only 77 pounds. I was literally watching my mother die right in front of my eyes. She began looking like all those patients I had seen many years earlier working at the hospital. They sat sadly in a wheelchair looking like "skin and bones."

I decided I was not giving up without a fight. I was not going to let my mother die like those patients had so many years earlier. If the pharmaceutical companies could not come up with anything better than this and neither could the medical industry then I would look elsewhere which is exactly what I did.

Emphysema and COPD Cure

I reasoned that there was something growing or proliferating in my mother's lungs and it was not being treated or even acknowledged by the doctors who saw my mother. I realized that this unknown pathogen had to be stopped if my mother was to survive this disease. I soon realized the reason the doctors were not alarmed when she arrived for each visit worse than before was that she was dying right on schedule.

Six Protocols That Reversed My Mom's Emphysema

After more than 6500 hours of research on emphysema and COPD, I developed six protocols that:

Reverse Emphysema: A Logical Approach

Emphysema Diagnosis

When my mother was diagnosed with emphysema I was worried. I had worked in a hospital many years earlier and remembered watching patients deteriorate, looking more disheveled with each successive visit. I knew they had most likely succumbed to the disease.

I hoped and prayed that the pharmaceutical industry had developed medications and emphysema treatments that would at least stop the progression of emphysema. After researching emphysema, chronic bronchitis and COPD for approximately 10 months I realized they had not. They had developed new medications that were supposed to slow the progress of the disease. Unfortunately, they had not developed one drug that would cure the disease or stop its progression.

Alternative Emphysema Treatment

Since I had no luck finding any effective emphysema treatments at the pharmaceutical web sites, I got back to basics. I had taken a graduate course in Pathology many years earlier and I remembered that all pathogens ate sugar. The only sugar available to them was the "systemic sugar" which was a result of overloading the body with sugar or sugary foods. The beta cells in the pancreas could not produce enough insulin quick enough so that it would actively transport the sugar across the cell membrane. (The function of insulin is active transport of sugar across the cell membrane so the cells can use it for energy.)

This systemic sugar provided a food supply to pathogens residing in our bodies. It appeared to me, even though it was ignored by my mother's doctors, that there was some residual pathogen still growing or proliferating in my mother's lungs. She had quit smoking yet her deterioration continued. The prescribed medications and emphysema treatments would mask a symptom temporarily. As soon as the drug wore off, the symptom was back and my mother was right back where she had started before taking the drug. The drugs seemed almost worthless.

I decided I would take sugar out of my mother's diet. What if this residual pathogen left over from my mother's 30+ years of smoking was proliferating because of the excess sugar in her diet? I not only removed all sugar from my mother's diet but I also eliminated simple carbohydrates such as bread and cereal as well as potatoes. I eliminated everything from her diet except protein like beef, pork, chicken and fish and fresh vegetables. I divided the vegetables in half and steamed the harder ones and made salads from the softer ones. It seemed as long as I made the meals tasty she was happy. I knew she would not be happy with this diet long. I knew she would miss bread and sweets soon so I watched her condition closely looking for any improvements.

Early in the Recovery Stage

The Improvement Begins

Amazingly after only two weeks she had improved. The improvement was not earth shattering but it was significant in that it was the only improvement she had shown since her diagnosis. She was still in End Stage Emphysema and still on 4 liters of supplemental oxygen 24/7 but she was no longer gasping for air most of the time. She was also eating a bit more food at each sitting. At first I thought it was because I was such a good cook but soon I realized it was her improving right before my eyes. This simple diet change based on real science, namely Pathology, was actually producing results and the prescribed medications and emphysema treatments were not other than the temporary masking of symptoms they provided.

The Research Begins

As my mother's condition slowly improved with this diet change I ramped up my research. I realized that the medical and pharmaceutical industries were not doing all that could be done for these emphysema, bronchitis and COPD patients. I began looking toward natural remedies, herbal health enhancements and high quality supplements that would produce actual improvement in my mother's condition. I know the drugs make a lot of money for the pharmaceutical companies and those who feel okay about investing in the stocks of these companies but they are not curing or stopping the progress of disease and in many cases their side-effects are worse than the symptoms they are supposed to treat.

Chronic Bronchitis: Eliminating Excess Mucus

One of the primary problems associated with bronchitis and especially chronic bronchitis is excess mucus production. This would not be such a problem if patients could cough up the mucus but it clumps together into large masses and coughing simply rustles it around in the lungs.

My mother took Mucinex like candy almost daily. It seemed like I was always on my way to Wal-Mart for more Mucinex. I eventually realized all it was doing was drying up the mucus. It was not eliminating it. I now think it was providing the substrate for the numerous secondary infections which required additional prescriptions for antibiotics.

In my research I found that mucus, or phlegm contains a high concentration of sulfur. These sulfur atoms form di-sulfide bonds with one another resulting in the large masses of mucus that could not be coughed up.

I found that N-acetyl-l-cysteine or NAC would break the di-sulfide bonds and essentially liquefy the mucus so my mother could easily cough it up. Finally she was getting this infection causing substance out of her body. This signaled the second significant improvement. My mother's doctors had told me that I should go ahead and give her Mucinex which along with the other crap they were prescribing was helping kill her off.

I no longer trusted her doctors and I knew for certain they had no solutions to the emphysema problem. I had already found two very simple solutions that worked better than anything they had prescribed. These two solutions were producing lasting improvements.

Logical Emphysema Treatments

Even though the pharmaceutical and medical industries state that emphysema, COPD and chronic bronchitis are progressive (the new word replacing "terminal"), I researched them anyway. My mother had been diagnosed and I could not just sit back and watch her die.

End Stage Emphysema

She quit smoking and took all the prescribed emphysema medications yet her condition worsened. As her emphysema progressed I noticed that at the most critical time, End Stage Emphysema, the medications stopped working one by one over about a 3 month period. These medications only provided temporary relief from the emphysema symptoms yet that temporary relief was all she had. Once the drug would wear off, she would be right back where she started with no improvement.

Logical Cause of Emphysema

It occurred to me that she had not smoked for more than two years yet her emphysema continued progressing. I reasoned that there must be some unknown residual pathogen left over from smoking that was growing or proliferating in her lungs. As it proliferated her body adapted by distending the lungs creating additional surface area for gas exchange (breathing).

As the lungs distended the pathogen proliferated. This went back and forth until her distended lungs were crowding her stomach making normal-sized meals impossible. I reasoned that starving the pathogen would stop its progress.

Logical Cure for Emphysema

Remembering a graduate course I had taken in Pathology I remembered that all pathogens eat sugar. Removing all systemic sugar from my mother's diet was a potential method of starving this pathogen and stopping its progress. I had nothing to lose. She was down to only 77 pounds and required 4 liters of continual supplemental oxygen 24/7.

I not only took sugar out of her diet I also removed anything that would break down to sugar in a few biochemical steps like potatoes, other starchy foods and anything with grains in them like bread and cereal.

The Improvement Begins

Amazingly, in two weeks my mother was noticeably better. She was barely taking any medications since they were no longer providing relief and once they stopped providing that relief, she refused to use them. I realized that none of these prescription emphysema treatments were providing any healing or lasting improvement so I continued looking for alternative treatments that would provide permanent improvement.

Reversing My Mother's Emphysema

I began attacking each aspect of her illness. First I found a supplement that would reduce inflammation which eliminated the need for prednisone. I then found a supplement that would amplify her immune response which eliminated the secondary infections and the antibiotics that were being prescribed to treat them. I found a supplement that would liquefy the mucus so she did not need Mucinex anymore. She was able to cough up all of the excess mucus which is a common symptom of chronic bronchitis. I restored her intestinal flora with a high quality, enteric coated probiotic which included strains that would replenish her large intestine and her small intestine and it included the food supply for the probiotics. I found a very inexpensive supplement that would move her pH ever so slightly in the alkaline direction making it difficult for any disease to reside. Lastly, I included a supplement that would tear off the bioelectric covering around the cells of the pathogen, whatever it was. I also made sure she drank about half of her body weight in ounces of water.

Healthy Diet Necessary for Recovery from COPD

I fed my mother uncontaminated meats only. That is, meats that do not have any antibiotics or steroids. These meats are more expensive but I thought get my mom healthy and we will figure out how to pay for everything later. Not a very good philosophy from an accountant's point of view but I wanted to save my mom first. We could get to the other daily crap after that was accomplished. Any of you who are suffering from this disease probably know the feeling.

I bought vegetables at the local vegetable market. I would take half of them and steam them and the other half I made salads with. I cut up each vegetable and put it in its own bowl. That way I could make her a fresh salad in less than a minute with whatever she wanted in it. I also made sure I took the harder vegetables, like carrots, and steamed them since they were too hard for her to chew if left raw.

Since I had taken sugar out of her diet there was no desert for about 6 months. After that she had gotten so much better I began adding one desert which was fresh blueberries with organic plain yogurt. The plain yogurt tastes a bit like sour cream. It is not the vanilla flavor it is plain. I would put this in a fancy dish so it looked like it was from an expensive restaurant. She loved it and eventually began asking for it.

Once she was getting much better we began adding in a little bread. I would buy one short loaf of high quality sour dough bread and we would split the loaf making sandwiches and toasting some. We would thoroughly enjoy it for a day or two and then eliminate it again until the next month.

Complete Recovery Shocks Doctors

After 14 months on the diet and taking the supplements every day my mother was only requiring 2 liters of oxygen and was back up to 95 pounds. This doesn't sound like much but she was only 103 pounds at the time of her diagnosis. She is only 5' 2" tall.

I documented everything with regards to my mother's health including the supplements and each minute detail that I noticed. My brother found an osteopath that would listen to what I had found in my research and look at my documentation. He agreed to prescribe a few medications which finished the job.

Prescribing these medications would have normally meant that he was practicing outside of established medical protocols which is an absolute no, no for doctors. This behavior can get them in trouble and if they don't stop, they can lose their license. Relying on the documentation I had provided allowed him to step outside these medical protocols without the threat of getting in trouble or worse.

Seventeen months after I began applying the six general protocols that reversed my mother's emphysema my mother had completely recovered from emphysema. There were no signs of the disease. She had re-gained all of her lost weight. She did not need any supplemental oxygen at any time. She could eat normal-sized meals. She could sleep the entire night without waking. She no longer had any problems with breathing and did not even need a rescue inhaler.

My mother's doctors still think it was their drugs that cured her emphysema. They didn't realize that she had stopped taking their drugs more than a year earlier nor had they realized that the other emphysema patients they were treating with the same drugs were either dead or dying and were not making any improvement.

Smoking Cessation Product That Actually Works

When my mother was diagnosed with emphysema and copd I was reminded again just how dangerous smoking is. I had tried to quit many times using a variety of methods. I first tried the classic nicorette gum which I had a little success with but I did not quit smoking. I did manage to slow down the smoking each day I used it and that certainly accounted for something. I then tried the patches thinking maybe it would take away my desire for cigarettes altogether but I got fidgety and eventually I was smoking a pack a day again.

I then decided to try hypnosis thinking I just needed to train my brain to not want or crave nicotine. That worked for 3 days, well almost 3 days. I was getting desperate and running out of smoking cessation options when I found aversion therapy.

The idea was to associate smoking with such unpleasant stimuli that it would almost make you sick just to think about smoking. I tried educating myself with information from the “quit smoking” phone lines that are present in all states now, I think. Along with this education I found pictures of diseased lungs that was caused from smoking. This made me nervous and you guessed it, I smoked even more.

I was talking to a friend of mine who after moving out of the state with his wife had called me. He had smoked a pack or more of Marlboro reds daily. He told me the only way to quit was using the nicotine inhalers. I had never heard of nicotine inhalers but I was determined to find them so I got in the car and headed for Wal Mart.

Much to my disappointment they were not available at Wal Mart and the pharmacist said they were not available without a prescription. Every other country in the world allow you to purchase this effective smoking cessation product but ours.

In the U. S. instead of spending $50 and buying a box of 42 cartridges like you can everywhere else you need a visit to your doctor $75 and then a prescription for the nicotine inhalers ($95). Instead of getting ripped off I went online and found Kiwi Drugs in New Zealand.

They are very friendly and very quick to ship. $49 and 10 days later I had my nicotine inhalers. I quit smoking that day just trying one of the cartridges and have not smoked since. I actually like these better than cigarettes. I have my nicotine inhaler with my coffee (when I drink coffee which is rare these days) and even have one with my occasional beer. I am amazed at how wonderfully these things work. I get craving a cigarette thinking there is no way the inhaler will work on this very strong craving but low and behold they do every time.

When I first started on these nicotine inhalers two weeks ago I used 6 cartridges each day but now, only two weeks later, I am down to only 2 cartridges. A very quick taper unlike what I experienced with the gum or the patches.

COPD and Emphysema Treatments that Work

My mother was diagnosed with emphysema and COPD over 5 years ago. She began the usual emphysema treatment regimen and the COPD treatment regimen that all emphysema and COPD patients are prescribed. This emphysema treatment regimen and the COPD treatment regimen included albuterol sulfate, Advair™, Spiriva™ and regular prescriptions for prednisone and antibiotics to treat inflammation and the secondary infections that often occur with COPD and emphysema.

All of the components of the emphysema treatment regimen and the COPD treatment regimen seemed to work to varying degrees at the beginning however, the disease continued to progress. My mother had stopped smoking and still the disease progressed. The doctors said that smoking had caused the emphysema and COPD yet even after quitting the disease worsened at a steady pace.

During 2005 I noticed that she was given 3 prescriptions for prednisone and 7 prescriptions for antibiotics and her condition worsened at an accelerated rate. The progression of the disease seemed to advance at a steady pace until that year. I began to wonder,

“is the emphysema treatment and the COPD treatment causing her emphysema and COPD to progress? Could the emphysema treatment and the COPD treatment that were designed to slow the progression of COPD and emphysema actually be making it worse?”

That was hard to believe since the emphysema treatment regimen and the COPD treatment regimen had gone through vigorous clinical trials and been approved by the FDA as medications that would slow the progression of COPD and emphysema. Was it just a coincidence that the emphysema treatment regimen and the COPD treatment regimen were present and emphysema and COPD just at that stage where it was overtaking her ability to fight it off?

As each component of the emphysema treatment and the COPD treatment stopped working my mother one by one refused to use them. Another Problem Arises: As If Emphysema Wasn't Enough!!

A few years after my mother’s diagnosis with emphysema and COPD another problem arose. She began having seizures and had actually collapsed at the drug store waiting in line for more prescriptions. She was put on additional medications to control the seizures. When I asked her new doctor, the neurologit, what was causing the seizures he gave me some more rhetoric. I again persisted with my questioning until I got the same response I had gotten from the pulmonary specialist.

“We don’t know what causes these seizures. We only know that these medications control the seizures.”

Another mystery?! You have got to be kidding me! I wondered why medical school took so long to get through if everything was a mystery. I also wondered how my mother had gone 72 years without any debilitating ailments and now in less than two years she had two seemingly unrelated debilitating conditions. I began to wonder if they could be related.

She told me that she had initially gone to the doctor complaining of dizziness and had actually fallen on the driveway trying to get the mail from the mailbox. Her doctor had tried a myriad of medications to solve this problem but to no avail. She was still dizzy most of the time and now had two additional problems, emphysema and COPD along with seizures.

Because of their manifestation, chronologically, I began to think that they had to be related in some way. I didn’t know how they were related but it seemed too coincidental that they would all materialize in such a short period of time and not be coming from the same or similar sources. I realized the doctors didn’t think so but they thought everything was a mystery and at that point I didn’t have much confidence in any of them for the obvious reasons.

I remember when one doctor told me that emphysema could actually be caused genetically and I replied that I knew in rare cases emphysema was caused by an alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. I’ll never forget the blank look I got from him after that statement. I believe he realized that my knowledge of this disease had eclipsed what he knew about it. Granted he treated many diseases throughout the day and I was only researching one but nonetheless I now knew at least, if not more, than he did about this disease.

Why Does Emphysema Get Worse So Long After Smoking Cessation?

This, along with my mother’s worsening condition, greatly intensified my research. The intensity increased to a level higher than any I had ever experienced in college or for any new job I had taken in the past. After all, my mom was dying and I was quickly realizing that no one, including the doctors and their staff, was doing anything to save my mother’s life. I had to find some answers. I began to ask the doctors three simple questions. These questions I asked of each of her three doctors at the time. They are as follows:

“Why is my mother’s emphysema worsening even though she has quit smoking? What is the mechanism at work causing this disease to progress?”
“How many medications do you have at your disposal that you can prescribe for various ailments?”
“Can you name one that cures a single disease?”

Not one doctor could ever come up with one drug that cured even one disease. This really concerned me. Why did they prescribe these drugs like candy if they weren’t curing anything? What was their motivation? Didn’t they realize they were killing people with these drugs? Maybe they did, maybe they didn’t but one thing was for sure, none of them seemed overly concerned about it.

The first question seemed to perplex the pulmonary specialist. He gave me some additional rhetoric about the disease progressing after being set in motion by smoking but when I persisted with my question,

“Why is my mother’s emphysema worsening even though she has quit smoking? What is the mechanism at work causing this disease to progress?”

He finally admitted they didn’t know. It was a mystery. A mystery? All those years of education and they were satisfied with emphysema being a mystery. Well, I’m sorry but that’s not good enough for me! Some how, some way, I was going to solve this big mystery.

Maybe I was just dumb enough to believe that I could solve this big mystery. Maybe as a Christian, since I had been praying to God every night to help me find the answers and believed whole heartedly that God would lead me to the answers, I continued my research. I began to look in obscure places on the internet for answers.

The Spirometry Test – The Doctors Play the Blame Game

As I began to do this I noticed that the doctors seemed a little nervous when they saw me sitting there. One doctor who was training medical students would bring them into other treatment rooms to see the patients but not my mother’s. They knew they did not intimidate me.

I had done research on nothing but emphysema and COPD for over a year when I began to go with her into the treatment rooms. It wasn’t long before I could ask intelligent questions and I could also see through their rhetoric. After a while their responses and comments to me started to seem canned, almost like they were prepped on what to say to me by someone. But these were the doctors. They were the boss in the office so who could be prepping them? How could they all have the same responses to my questions almost word for word?

Upon initial diagnosis they had given her the spirometry test to determine the current state of the lungs and the integrity of lung function. They determined that she had the lungs of a 111 year old. I don’t know if any of you know anything about depression but I’m sure anyone with any common sense would realize that when a patient is depressed the last thing you want to do is make them more depressed.

This however, is exactly what they did with this information. They repeatedly told her how she had done this to herself by smoking cigarettes. At this time she had not smoked for a few years. After this revelation she became very much to herself. She barely left her room. I finally asked her what was wrong and she said that she couldn’t believe that she had done this to herself.

I missed her bright smile

Watching her depression increase I began to intensify my research, staying up all night almost every night for a year and a half. I would check on her every hour or so to make sure she was okay and make sure she was still breathing. I had to turn the dining room light on so I could see her clearly. I didn’t want to turn on a light in her room and wake her up. She seemed to have more and more trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep once she did finally fall asleep.

As her emphysema and COPD worsened, her sleeping became sporadic. She could only sleep for a few hours at a time before waking up short of breath. Although I was not happy to see her unable to sleep for longer duration, I was relieved to see that she would wake up when she got short of breath. This provided a small bit of confidence that she would not stop breathing in her sleep.

I asked each of her doctors for the list of medications they had prescribed so I could check on each of these medications to make sure they were actually helping her. The first very disturbing thing I found was that they had prescribed Crestor™ (rosuvastatin calcium) which in my research I learned that it actually blocked CoEnzyme Q₁₀ (ubiquinone) production, a nutrient necessary for heart health.

I also learned that emphysema patients often died from heart failure! So the very thing that may very well kill my mother was being hastened by the doctor’s prescription! How could this be? Didn’t the doctors know this? Had I, in my limited research, eclipsed their knowledge of this disease? That possibility alone scared me! I was relying on them to do the right thing and now I was beginning to realize that maybe they were not.

NAC Supplement May Provide Relief

After my mother’s diagnosis with emphysema/COPD, I noticed that she had a large amount of phlegm in her lungs and couldn’t seem to cough it up. She said that every now and then she could but usually she could not.

In my research I found that phlegm contained sulfur which formed di-sulfide bonds with each other and caused the phlegm to stick together into large clumps. I found a supplement at the local health foods store called NAC. NAC or N-acetyl-l-cysteine, breaks these di-sulfide bonds and thins out the phlegm.

I purchased some of this so we could try it. The tablets were large and were 200 mg strength. I gave her one and within about 45 minutes she said it had loosened some but she still could not cough up most of the phlegm. We tried another 200 mg and it loosened some more. After 400 mg of this supplement I was scared to give her much more so I broke a third tablet in half. About 30 minutes after the half pill and 500 mg and 2 hours total since she took the first tablet she could finally cough up the phlegm and spit it out. This seemed to help however, it wore her out to cough so much. She took a nap after the NAC and coughing session but she slept very sound so appeared it was worth all the effort.

After that, anytime she had trouble with phlegm we got out the NAC but we would just start with the two and a half tablets, the 500 mg that had helped before. You may want to try the same progressive dosage method we tried starting with only one tablet and giving it time to work before taking an additional tablet. If you have a chiropractor, naturopath or osteopath you can ask I would strongly recommend doing this. I don’t mention MDs here because they don’t generally train on many supplements and often don’t have a suggestion except not to take it. They learn primarily pharmaceutical treatments which I like only as a last resort.

She liked the fact that it was not another prescription that she had to take with a myriad of side effects she had to watch out for.

Why Don't Doctors Know This?

Dr. A. V. Constantini of the World Health Organization stated that, "Fungal infections are the most overlooked medical problem in the world." Yet, if you ask your doctor if he or she took a class on Mycology (the study of fungi) in medical school they would probably say, NO! Most American medical schools removed these classes from the curriculum in the 1970s, probably at the suggestion, or insistence, of the high and mighty pharmaceutical companies.

According to Dr. Constantini and others, fungal infections are the underlying cause of many, even most, debilitating diseases. In the 40s, 50s, and 60s, Mycology textbooks were even written by MDs. They made similar broad statements in these textbooks.

More recently, Mayo Clinic found in a study they did on sinusitis (specifically the inflammation of the sinuses but commonly referred to as nasal congestion) that 96% of all sinusitis is fungal related. However, if you were suffering from sinusitis today, chances are your family physician would prescribe an antibiotic.

For those of you who do not know, antibiotics are mycotoxins (toxins produced and released by fungi). Remember penicillin? In 1928 penicillin, the first true antibiotic, was discovered by Alexander Fleming, Professor of Bacteriology at St. Mary's Hospital in London. He extracted it from mold (a fungi) that was growing on bread.

One major problem with antibiotics is that they kill probiotics. Probiotics are the "good bacteria" that populate your small intestine. They carry out a multitude of functions not the least of which is the production of Vitamin B12 and keeping Candida albicans (a one-celled fungi) from proliferating. Once in the bloodstream, Candida albicans becomes systemic and begins to invade other organs and organ systems. Many experts say that this unchecked proliferation is the underlying cause of many otherwise, seemingly unrelated, diseases.

In a televised interview, Lynn Jennings, M.D., from Wichita Falls, Texas was asked how many of her new patients she thought had fungal infections. Her answer,

"All of them!"

It surprised me when I realized fungal infections played such a large part in the disease process. It surprised me even more when I realized that doctors were not even given a Mycology class in medical school. Dr. Jennings stated that her instruction on mycology was limited to a few lectures in Microbiology class.

An article in the October 2002 edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association written by Ruth Edsell stated that corn is universally contaminated with Candida albicans. Candida albicans produces the mycotoxin, aflatoxin B1, a known carcinogen. It is known to cause, or at least be associated with, colon cancer.

Emphysema/COPD and Conventional Medicine

I have been taking care of my mother who was diagnosed with emphysema almost 5 years ago. Her general practice physician and her pulmonary specialist started her on the usual emphysema medications and treatments and she began to deteriorate almost immediately. Her weight dropped from 103 lbs to 77 lbs and she went from not needing any supplemental oxygen at the time of her diagnosis to requiring 4 liters of continuous oxygen not to mention ending up nearly bedridden, only leaving her room for 15 to 20 minutes each day.

I researched for almost 4 years all night, every night so I could check on her regularly throughout the night and make sure she didn't stop breathing. After over 6500 hours of research, I realized what the etiology of the disease emphysema actually was and why it continues to get worse long after the patient stops smoking. I then realized why the drugs they currently prescribe for emphysema not only fail to cure the disease or reverse any of the symptoms, they actually make the patient worse.

Once I realized why the medications the doctors were prescribing made her worse I began to understand what had to be done to reverse this debilitating disease and immediately applied these principles to my mother’s daily regimen. She began to improve almost immediately. Within 3.5 to 4 months she gained 22 lbs of the 26 pounds she had lost over the previous 4+ years and was able to reduce her oxygen from 4 liters of continuous oxygen to only 2 liters. At present, she only requires supplemental oxygen some of the time. She is now able to go 18 hours at a time without any supplemental oxygen and even sleeps without any oxygen some of the time, something she has not been able to do for over 4 years.

I wrote a book outlining her struggles and ongoing recovery from this debilitating disease after being told by everyone I asked in the medical field that it was terminal. At this point you probably know what I think, NO IT ISN'T!
