When trying to conceive, and especially when hoping for a particular gender, your ovulation is something you must become aware of, keep track of, and intimately familiarize with.

You probably don't need to be reminded what ovulation is, but let's define ovulation the same. Ovulation is nothing else than the release of a single mature egg from a follicle in your ovary. Ovulation usually happens regularly, once a month, and in a typical 28 days menstrual cycle, ovulation generally occurs around the day 14.

When are you most fertile? Your "fertile window", as it's called, is the time that occurs between 4-5 days before ovulation and 1-2 days after ovulation. The peak of your fertility is occurring 24 hours before ovulation, and 24 hours after the ovulation.

Woman's egg can live for 24-48 hours after it is released, and a man's sperm can live inside woman's body for 4-5 days.

Therefore, if you want to conceive, you should time the intercourse accordingly.
Ovulation calendars are tools that will allow you to do just that!

Firstly - I do believe you already know this - but let's say what an ovulation calendar is.

Ovulation calendar is a calendar that calculates the time when you will have an ovulation in order to keep track of your fertility cycle. Nowadays, an ovulation calendar can even be a program you run on your computer.

With the help of the ovulation calendar, you will not be guessing when you are most likely to get pregnant, you will know the exact date of your ovulation - and thus be in charge of your own fertility!

You may not know, however, that ovulation calendars can be used as a tool to calculate when you're most likely to conceive a boy baby, and when the baby girl is more probable.

To conceive a boy, time your intercourse the closest to ovulation as possible.

Y chromosome-carrying sperm that makes boys move faster than X chromosome-carrying sperm (girls) so it's more likely this type of sperm will arrive first to the egg ready to be fertilized. However, boy conceiving sperm is also more fragile than girl conceiving sperm, so they cannot wait for the egg to be released; they will die off leaving the more resilient X sperm time to finish the job if they arrive too early.

Knowing this, plan having intercourse a day before ovulation, on the day of ovulation, and a day after it to improve your chances for a boy!

Please note that not all dates that are your fertile days will result in conceiving a boy (for example), so you must have patience, and time the intercourse exactly on dates marked as favorable. If you have trouble conceiving in general, this method is not for you.

What you need for this to work is having the correct menstrual cycle information (length, time) and keeping it up to date. Incorrect or outdated data will result in an erroneous calculation. Arcane fertility terms like corpus luteum, progesterone levels, or LH surges are luckily not required to study to use the ovulation calendar properly.

How to conceive a boy with the Selnas gender selection method

Selnas method of baby gender selection is much less known than the popular Shettles method and the like, but it represents interesting gender preselection principles worth taking a closer look at.

Selnas gender selection method is the only one that is called both a natural, and a scientific based method.

On their website, they claim an official success rate of - prepare to be amazed - 98,7%!

What they offer is - in their own words - a "painless baby gender selection by a scientific baby gender selection calendar" that, they boast, is much more accurate than the ubiquitous Chinese calendar!

The product is called Selnasplus and it's actually a laboratory-prepared pregnancy calendar showing the exact dates when to conceive for a gender your want your baby to be.

So, if the baby boy is what you want, you would get a "boy calendar" with 33 to 45 dates in six months, marked as the right time to conceive a baby boy.

If you'd like to try the method, it will cost you a modest sum of $50 plus they promise a quick delivery. They will need to know your age, blood group, age of getting your first period, among others.

They talk about how they are able to tell the days when the woman's egg is charged negatively and when it's charged positively.

The theory is that when in times your egg is charged negatively, you are able to conceive only boy babies, and vice versa: when your egg is positively charged, the girls will be conceived. The egg is charged either + or - for 65 to 90 days a year.

That's the time to go for a gender you're after!

The roots of Selnas method go to the year 1933 when two Russian scientists, Mme Vera Schroeder and M. Koltzoff published in Nature an article about sperm having different charges depending on the sex chromosome they carry.

The sperm that makes boys, Y carrying sperm, have a positive charge, and the X carrying sperm is of opposite polarization.

This old scientific discovery has been validated in recent times. For instance, by The Science University of Tokyo that carried out a study in 1992. Dr. Kenneth Glander of Duke University showed that the female Muriquis monkeys in Brazil can change their vaginal polarization so to conceive a gender that is less represented in their group of monkeys. Professor J. Stolkovski works from the 1980's indicate that the ion content of food can change the electrical charge of the body (and the female egg!). This study has been the basis of the diet method.

How to conceive a boy already touched on astrological methods to conceive a boy baby some time ago.

It may be true that the phase in which the Moon was when the baby is conceived influences baby's gender!

It all depends on the nature of the sign in which the Moon was at the moment of conception: was it male of female?

The baby will be a boy if conceived when the Moon is in a male sign during your personal Moon phase return. Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius are considered as male signs.

Some claim that combining this gender prediction astrological knowledge with lunar cycle fertility techniques you can predict baby gender with 70% accuracy!

Why this technique doesn't work 100%?

To get around this it is best to have intercourse 12-24 hours before the recommended date to conceive a boy.

That's why this gender prediction technique is - although useful - not right all the time. But then, few are anyway!

These Moon phase and gender prediction techniques are used with a high rate of success by Francesca Naish in Australia and E.R. Schweighart at his Clinic Astra International in Vienna, Austria. At the Bratislava clinic of Gynecology they tested it with a success rate of 98%, based on 8000 women who wanted a boy baby only.

You may notice that this astrological notion of Lunar fertility cycles doesn't correspond well with conventional scientifically endorsed women's fertility cycle that is exclusively menstrual.

If we have only one fertility cycle, it means we have only one ovulation window and only one chance a month to get pregnant.

Lunar phase fertility cycle on the contrary asserts that we have multiple fertile windows in any given month.

Any scientific proof to support such unconventional claims? In 2003, a Canadian research team from the University of Saskatchewan found evidence that suggests that astrology is maybe really onto something.

In response to hormone surges, women experience two to three periods of follicular development each month, though only one egg is selected for ovulation, they discovered.

That basically corresponds with the astrological notions of Lunar fertility cycles. Or, at least strongly suggests that woman can get pregnant on any time of month, no matter where she is in her ovulatory cycle. In other words, ovulation may occur spontaneously ("intercourse accelerating ovulation").

Where you live influences will you get a boy?

Isn't it amazing to learn that there is a variety of factors that can influence whether you will conceive a baby boy or a girl?

Last time we talked that levels of mother's hormone testosterone can influence her baby's gender. You are more likely to conceive a boy than a girl - at least according to statistics - but here are many other things that can determine your chances of conceiving a boy baby, for instance getting a fertility treatment favors conceiving of a boy baby while smoking lowers your chance of giving birth to a boy!

Some stand strongly behind the assertion that mother's diet influences her baby's gender.

But, did you know that for predicting your chances of whether you'll get a boy baby actually matters where you live?

Sounds incredible but, it looks like your chances for conceiving a boy are greater if you live in southern Europe than in the north!

It's vice versa in North America: chances for conceiving a boy are greater if you live in the North as opposite of the South!

There's actually a scientific study published in the British Medical Journal that looked at does latitude had an effect on how many boys versus girl babies are born.

And - as it turned out - it does!

Study was conducted by researchers at St Luke's Hospital in Malta. For the study, they divided Europe into "southern countries", such as Malta, Italy and Spain (latitude 35 to 40°), "central", including Austria, France and the UK (40-55°) and "Nordic countries", such as Denmark, Iceland and Sweden (over 55°). North America was divided into Mexico (under 30°), the United States (30-50°) and Canada (over 50°). For information about births they used World Health Organization data over the last half a century.

What they found when they compared all the data was that more boys were born in southern European countries than in central Europe or Nordic countries, while in North America more male babies came to the world in Canada than in the USA, and the least in Mexico.

It is worthwhile to note that although USA and the relevant parts of Europe share the same latitude, both central and southern Europe boy birth ratio was higher than for the USA. So it's not a temperature related effect.

For now, scientists are not sure what exactly is the reason for observed differences.

Your hormones influence which gender you conceive?

Looks like there's another piece of evidence for the theory that women who conceive boys, and those who conceive girls, are - somehow - fundamentally different!

Mothers of sons are different from mothers who have daughters: we conceive a gender we're more suited to get! Women with higher values of a hormone that's considered the male sex hormone, testosterone, are more likely to conceive and give birth to boy babies!

Can mother's hormones influence her baby's gender?

The theory that women with higher testosterone hormone levels are more dominant - and thus more suited to get a male baby - was first proposed by a reproductive scientist with a PhD in psychology Dr Valerie Grant some time ago.

Scientists already knew that mothers behave differently towards their babies according to their sex [mothers of boys are more initiating, mothers of girls more responsive], but the conclusion was that this was because of the strength of sex stereotyping. I'd say there was evidence that the mothers were behaving in ways that were natural to them.

Some scientists didn't believe anyway that baby's gender is decided by a blind chance because fluctuations in birth ratios are readily observed in historical data.

How to conceive a boy blog, for instance, already wrote about one scientist who questioned: Who determines the gender of a baby? - concluding father's got almost nothing to do with which gender his baby will turn to be.

Far from being a fifty-fifty chance, as many parents are told when they begin to investigate how to conceive a boy or a girl specifically, you are more likely to have a boy than a girl baby - looking solely at statistical data.

That gives those parents who wonder how likely to have a boy are they, an incentive to look further for ways to upper their chance of conceiving a boy. It is often told that it is more difficult to conceive a girl than a boy baby!

Dominant women more likely to have boys?

During both World Wars the increase in baby boy's birth was observed. This cannot be explained purely by a chance, can it not?

It has already been known in mammals such as deer that female dominance and having male offspring are linked. Is it the same case with humans?

It is interesting how Dr Grant came up with her theory. A mother of 3 boys, Grant found long time ago that she could tell in advance which baby gender her friends were likely to have!

It explains why the ratio of sons to daughters among my female hockey-playing friends is the statistically improbable 34:2 - testosterone and competitive team sports go hand in hand.

She came up with the Simple Adjective Test that consists of simultaneously measuring blood testosterone levels and answering how often you feel:

proud
vigorous
rejected
selfsatisfied
fearful etc.

She found that women who are:

confident
assertive
influential
with a strong sense of self etc.

have high levels of testosterone - and conceive boys!

Mothers of daughters tend to be more:

nurturing
empathic
tolerant etc.

and have lower testosterone.

It gets even more interesting: Grant claims you are more likely to get the same gender your friends have!

It's also quite likely that if you have one-sex children, your closest friends will have the same. Not only are you similar people, but you'll probably feel more comfortable with their parenting style.

But how is this all scientifically sound?

Well, Grant can for sure prove this model of gender selection works - with cows!

But wait till you hear it: the levels of testosterone in the follicles (which produce the egg) reliably predict the sex of the embryo and, more startling, the egg may well come out already adapted to receive an X or Y chromosome-bearing sperm. In lay terms this means that the female has already “decided” which sex offspring to have before sperm get involved!

Most women with more than one child have babies of both gender - how this fact fits with her gender selection theory?

Actually, it does fit.

Most women have a medium amount of testosterone that fluctuates month to month. That's why the same woman may produce an egg adapted to an X chromosome in one reproductive cycle, and then to an Y chromosome the next. In women, testosterone is also very influenced by external stresses (for an example on the extreme - by war - as we noted above; but "normal" everyday stresses such as a death in family or changing jobs count just the same).

Some women however are, although still within a normal range, with either high or low testosterone levels. Those are the one who will always have boys - or always have girls!

Grant noted that before contraception was widely used, she saw families with 12 or 13 children of the same sex.

The evidence for the theory that women, not men, decide gender selection in order to produce babies whose gender better suits them is, it seems, really mounting.

Whelan boy: Whelan gender selection method

Whelan method of gender selection was conceived as a betterment of the Shettles method to have a gender of your choosing.

Back in the 1970's, Elizabeth Whelan, Sc. D. created the Whelan method because she found the Shettles unsatisfying. She concluded that you have better chances if you go against the Shettles recommendations.

Since it is originated from Shettles method, the Whelan is also a natural gender selection technique that relies heavily on timing intercourse in relation to your time of ovulation.

You are supposed to time intercourse on specified days of your cycle. Following a gender diet and certain positions is also recommended.

Here is how to get a Whelan boy!

To conceive a boy, according to the Whelan method, have intercourse four to six days before your basal body temperature goes up. To know your basal body temperature take it every day using ovulation prediction kit.

The only scientific foundation for this natural sex selection method is a survey of 1,300 women charting their temperatures done by Dr. Rodrigo Guerrero: Type and time of insemination within the menstrual cycle and the human sex ratio at birth. Guerrero R. Stud Fam Plann. 1975 Oct;6(10):367-71.

Success rates of Whelan gender selection method are, according to the author herself, 68 percent effective for boys and 56 percent effective for girls.

That doesn't sound very impressive, but it certainly is a free, safe, relatively simple, natural gender selection method you can do at home yourself.

It looks like there's a medical breakthrough in the making that will soon enable parents to reveal their unborn baby's gender earlier than ever before!

Sequenom, Inc., a company in Grand Rapids at Medical Mile, San Diego, California, is developing the gender prediction test that will become the earliest existing test for gender in the near future.

SensiGene Fetal (XY) gender detection blood test works at incredible early 12 weeks!

That's significantly earlier than telling the gender with ultrasound.

This gender detection test uses a sample of mother's blood to predict the gender of the fetus. It analyses circulating cell-free fetal DNA within the blood of a pregnant woman to try to identify male-specific targets on the Y chromosome, distinguishing between maternal and female fetal DNA, to tell a boy or a girl. "So when you have female DNA, you know you're not looking at the mother's, you're looking at baby's DNA", said a spokesman for Sequenom.

He also claimed that the average age of gender prediction was 12 1/2 weeks, six weeks earlier than ultrasound detection, the standard method.

During testing phase more than 700 mothers took the test and the accuracy was amazing: more than 98% of the time the test was correct in identifying baby's gender!

No wonder that creators of SensiGene Fetal (XY) gender detection blood test expect it to be very popular.

A survey they conducted on 400 expectant mothers suggests that 80% would like to learn the gender of their unborn children if it were safe, affordable and convenient.

And why not?

Spokesman said: "I think the overwhelming thing is, they just wanted to know." Besides a simple curiosity of parents wanting to know what gender to expect, testing for a boy or girl definitely resolves the question: what color to paint the nursery?

Test will not likely be covered by insurance.

It can only be ordered by a physician in order to avoid abuse. This "allows for the right choices to be made between the physician and patient during the discussion of the care of that particular individual's pregnancy", Sequenom's spokesman asserts.

Expect to pay about $395 to have your blood sample sent to Sequenom's laboratory for analysis.

The reliability of those gender prediction methods is questioned by some.

Is it a father or a mother the one who determines the gender of the baby?

The question is not as naive as it looks.

I'm aware that many people will very confidently say that - of course! - it's the father that determines the gender! What a stupid question to ask - did you overslept your biology classes?

A minority will also be able to tell you the story about the Y and X chromosomes, and how father's sperm provides the material that will produce a boy or a girl. Having only a pair of X chromosomes, the female egg just passively accepts whatever the sperm will bring. It's only a coincidence that a boy and not a girl is conceived, or vice versa.

Thinking that a female can have a say in choosing the gender of the baby she'll conceive belongs to the old wives' tales (we singled out 7 such ways to conceive a boy) and folklore myths together with astrology or Chinese gender selection chart.

In the long ages before we knew about X and Y chromosomes, people believed that a female is responsible for selecting the gender of baby. Man can do nothing about the gender of his offspring. This view often led to blaming the woman for not producing boys for her husband, for instance.

However, there are some voices today that are telling us a different story.

One of those dissonant voices belongs to Dr Anil Maheshwari (shivbaba@vsnl.com), Consultant Surgeon. Here's the reference: Maheshwari A. MYTH: SEX OF THE BABY IS CHOSEN BY THE MALE. REALITY: SEX OF THE BABY IS CHOSEN BY THE FEMALE. Pediatric Oncall 2004; 1. Art # 10.

He has proposed that there are factors leading to conception of one gender or the other, such as different patho-physiological conditions and status of the sperms and the ovum. He thinks these have an influence on attraction of the sperm towards the ovum.

He thinks that's the key in how the gender is selected.

Ionic status of the X and Y sperm and the variable charge of the ovum ultimately decides which sperm will fertilize the ovum.

Sperms containing the X chromosome are negatively charged while sperms containing the Y chromosome are positively charged.

Not only is sperm either positively or negatively charged, but the ovum is not always neutral, too! The ovum membrane itself goes through polarity changes from positive to neutral and to a negative charge in a cycle.

There's one more interesting fact: the appearance of a brief luminous ring at the moment of contact between sperm and the egg is a proof of an electrical involvement in fertilization. Amazing!

So, the sperm - itself having a plus or minus charge - are attracted to the ovum having a variable charge. Only the sperm having the opposite charge from that of the ovum will be able to fertilize the ovum, and the other sperm will be rejected.

Positively charged ovum membrane will attract the negatively charged sperm carrying the X chromosome. Result: a baby girl is conceived!
Negatively charged ovum membrane will attract the positively charged sperm carrying the Y chromosome. Result: a baby boy is conceived!

The male only determines the sex of the baby - after conception.

If you've ever given thought to conceiving a boy, the first idea that occurred to you probably have been something in the lines of natural gender selection methods.

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) for gender selection

Thanks to modern methods of scientific baby gender selection, it is really possible to choose the gender of your baby - although still highly controversial!

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is one of those gender selection methods: a fertility procedure that can be used - and it is used currently - for gender selection.

PGD is most often used by couples wanting to avoid some hereditary genetic illnesses. However its use for gender selection is what regularly raises ethical questions.

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis involves in vitro fertilization (IVF) during the fertility treatment in which the woman is given fertility drugs in order to create multiple eggs.

Resulting multiple eggs are then removed, and taken to the fertilization laboratory where they are fertilized - usually with the sperm that was processed by the MicroSort method of sperm spinning.

The resulting embryos are then allowed to grow for three days. When they are consisting of six to eight cells, one of the cell is taken to be biopsied. From that one cell, scientists in the lab can tell the gender!

Of course, they can also tell if the embryo suffers from some abnormality such as Dawn syndrome etc.

The embryos with desirable characteristics (like the wanted gender) are then implanted in woman's uterus.

This is the only medical gender selection method that's almost 100 % successful. Unfortunately, it is not available in every fertility clinic!

Position to conceive a boy baby

Shettles method of gender selection introduced us to the idea that we can conceive a boy baby knowing the simple fact that the sperm that is responsible for making boys is essentially different from the sperm that makes girl babies.

And using that fact in our advance!

One of the ways to get a boy baby with Shettles method is using specific positions for intercourse.

Remember that the boy conceiving sperm are fragile and quick to die off? We want them to need to travel as quicker is possible, the shortest way possible.
That means it's essential to deposit the sperm at the base of the cervix for Y sperm to survive and have a chance of fertilizing the egg.

This is best accomplished with intercourse positions that use deep penetration, like doggy style.

You will need to use those deep penetration positions while timing intercourse to conceive a boy.

One more thing!

The vaginal tract is naturally acidic, and Y sperm is weaker than X sperm but it's made even weaker in a highly acidic environment.

Let's begin with the basics of conception. I'm sure you know this already, but it's important enough for conceiving the baby boy you want, so we'll reiterate once again.

At the time of conception, gender is determined by chromosomes that male is bringing to the table. It's male's sperm that determines the future baby's gender!

The unfertilized egg carries only X chromosome. But the sperm can carry either an X or a Y chromosome.

If the sperm carrying an X chromosome fertilizes the egg, a girl will be conceived.

If the sperm carrying a Y chromosome fertilizes the egg, a boy will be conceived.

How to increase the chances of Y chromosome fertilizing the egg and thus conceiving a boy baby?

Actually, there are many methods around that can be used to give Y sperm an advantage. Shettles method being maybe most popular but certainly not the only one.

They all more or less rely on the innate characteristics of the sperm carrying Y chromosome in the contrast with those carrying X chromosome.

Sperm carrying X chromosome - the one that's responsible for conceiving girls - appears to have longer life span than the one responsible for conceiving boys. On the other hand, sperm that carries Y have a higher motility.

What is sperm motility? Sperm motility is simply a measure of percentage and quality of sperm that's moving forward. If you have poor sperm motility, your sperm will not be so successful in swimming toward the egg and thus your chances of conceiving either a boy or a girl are also diminished.

If you're dealing with poor sperm motility, you're advised to increase the overall sperm count before trying to conceive.

Here's why sperm motility is important when trying to conceive a boy: Sperm carrying X chromosome exhibit less motility than the sperm that's responsible for conceiving a boy. Remember, that less motile sperm also have a longer life span than the faster, but shorter-lived Y sperm.

To conceive a boy, we will try to adjust the timing of the intercourse to use those characteristics of the different types of sperm in our advantage.

See the difference between boy and girl making sperm spelled out here if it's still confusing. However, the following paragraph is the most important and the one on which to take action accordingly if trying for a boy.

It is only logical to therefore have intercourse as closer as possible to ovulation when wanting to have a boy baby. If you do it too early, the slow but long-lived X sperm may win the race to the egg. So, keep track of your ovulation and time the intercourse accordingly!

Which day of your cycle is the best to conceive to give birth to a boy baby depends on the length of your cycle and when - precisely - ovulation occurs.

First, some good news: you are more likely to conceive a boy anyway!

Although it is usually said that one's chances of conceiving either gender are 50/50, that's not entirely true.

You see, for some reason we don't still understand, about 51% of all births are boys!

Yes, if all is left in nature's hands you are statistically more likely to give birth to a baby boy.

If that is too much of a chance to take, you'll be pleased to learn there are many methods that could increase your chances of conceiving a boy.

To increase your chances of conceiving a boy, first thing to do is understand the differences between sperm that makes boys vs sperm that makes girls. Using the specifics of boy carrying sperm we can increase the chance of Y chromosome fertilizing the egg.

What we want to do, is create right conditions under which boy carrying sperm can thrive, survive and consequently fertilize the egg.

If you're pregnant for the first time and reasonably young, your chances of conceiving a boy are better than for your second-time pregnant counterpart. The older you are, the more likely you are to give birth to a girl.

However, if you've conceived through artificial insemination, chances are better that a boy will be conceived. Ditto if you're expecting non-identical twins.

What can man do to conceive a boy (to upper the chances of his partner conceiving a boy, that is)?

Yes, there are things males can do to make baby boy, too. To increase chances of conceiving a boy baby, strive to increase your overall sperm count, wear loose-fitting underwear, don't expose your testes to heat, and try sponging your scrotum with cool water. Sperm that makes boys is very sensitive to heat!

Are there some sexual positions that can increase chances of conceiving a boy? Yes, there are some sexual positions that make you more likely you will conceive a boy baby, so when choosing sexual position go for those that allow deep penetration. It is advisable for woman to climax first.

When to have intercourse to increase your chances of conceiving a boy? The best time to have sex is as close as possible to ovulation.

Some also recommend douching your vagina with an alkaline solution to make your reproductive tract more boy sperm friendly. You can buy such recipes, but I've found one on-line: solution is made by mixing 15ml (1tbsp) of bicarbonate of soda with 600ml (one pint) of warm water. However I can not recommend douching method, and there are many other, safer methods to improve your chances of conceiving a boy.

Victoria's Secret model Doutzen Kroes (25) just welcomed a son on Friday morning.
