Sure, I wrote many papers for school (which was 9 years past at that point), all of which were caffeine-induced “all-nighters”, often scrambling to print out the final pages just minutes before the paper was due. Clearly I was a superb and dedicated student!

I did a lot of writing on my computer- mostly consisting of personal emails and instant messages to friends- you know, important stuff like “my day is sucking, how’s yours going?” or clever acronyms like “lol”.

But writing a book? Seemed like an unlikely project I was considering. Why was I considering it? Who did I think I was???

It’s really not that hard. Really. In fact, it’s fun!

There are two different reasons for creating an ebook:

1. To use as a marketing piece to get entice people to sign up for your newsletter or list (see www.sportscareersonline.com for an example of this).

2. For profit.

The first type of ebook (sometimes called a “mini-ebook) is typically a bit shorter than the second, around 8-50 pages is the norm. Your goal is to give away some solid information while leaving the reader dying for more!

The second type of ebook could be your core product, and must unique content not easily found in other places. Impossible you say? Are you thinking, everything in my sport has already been done and is available for free online?

Well I don’t know who you are or what your background is, but I bet you have some ideas floating around in your brain that nobody has thought of!

Remember, you don’t have to be completely original here. You can take concepts already available everywhere and put them together into an ebook in a unique way that nobody has done yet. For example, this book is a combination of the wide variety of things I’ve learned about internet business and sports online from literally hundreds of sources.

When I tell people I have an internet business and I make a living online marketing swimming products to triathletes, I typically get a lot of puzzled looks.

Often, the question is “Do you really make a LIVING with that?” or “How is that possible??” or just “Oh I see.” even though they clearly have no clue how I make ends meet doing that!

Sometimes I will come across an athlete or former athlete who is fascinated with the idea of making money online in sports. Most of the time, they were formerly under the impression that they would have to have won a gold medal (or several Tour de France’s), and become at least somewhat famous doing something like cycling, tennis, golf, etc. in order to have any credibility.

Nonsense!

Most of the people making money online are not anyone you’ve ever heard of. Why would Lance Armstrong start an internet business? He’s got money rolling in from his hundreds of endorsements!

It’s up to the people that compete or competed in a sport but did NOT become one of the elites:

• The baseball players who got to minor league AA-ball but never got the call up to the major leagues.
• The track athlete who set his high school record in the mile but never made it to Olympic trials
• The rugby player who played one year in the Aussie Football League and who’s $40,000 salary barely covered his expenses that year
• The golfer who loves the sport and plays all the time, but her game was not quite up to the par of making the LPGA cut.

Being the best of the best in sports is pretty damn nice, and can be lucrative in itself. However, excelling in your sport but NOT making it to elite or professional level can be a huge advantage for you in achieving a successful internet business.

Now this is of course a small fraction of people on the internet. But you can get an idea of different kinds of niches, especially within sports, that could potentially be profitable for you with the right product.

Finding a niche can be massively fun. Do Google searches. Talk to your friends and coworkers. You will start to get a feel for whether your idea is a good one or not by your results online and off.

I found my niche because I got laid off and didn’t know what else to do besides coach swimming. How will you find your niche??

While I thought I would be posting blogs, sending out newsletters, and finishing up my book on living your passion with an online sports business, none of the above happened!

I did spend some time on my other website, http://www.triswimcoach.com- and managed to improve sales by an average of about $1500/month.

The rest of the time was spent on “vacation mode”, meaning, I would rather go on a hike, or check out a new beach than sit down at my computer! I did manage to get a little more done on the book, but I think being down under and on a completely different time zone meant “off duty” to my brain.

But now I’m back in the U.S. and motivated to continue teaching online sports business to others. I’ve also learned a few things since March so the info will be new, fresh and exciting!

I found this out through live, off-line interaction with a small sample of athletes in my local area. This is a fantastic way for you too to find your niche, as you know if there is a big demand locally, globally there is likely a $5-10,000/month profit market out there waiting for you!

Think about what people in your market want. Is your market saturated with products but not services? Or vice versa? Find the angle that will work.

What are the demographics of your market? Mostly male or female? Any particular age range?

What motivates the customers in your market to buy? Are they worried about missing out on something if they don’t buy a product or service? In many sports this is the case. In triathlon, everyone wants the latest and greatest in all equipment. When I learned that some triathletes will spend $1,000 just for a wheel for their bicycle, I knew that $37 for an online package would be nothing to them!

In summary, remember to clearly define the problem first, then come up with the solution. This is critical to your success online!

Thinking within the box, asking “permission” to do things, memorizing trivial facts- all associated with being a good student. But let me tell you all of that is HOGWASH in the real world of internet business!

With an internet business, you have to be original, and you have to go for it. There are no grades and there are no textbooks. You have to be comfortable with expressing your individuality! Most schools frown on this kind of behavior and certainly don’t set you up for a successful career owning a business.

So if you were good in school, it may be a tougher transition to an internet business. If you lived sports and dreaded going to school as a kid, you could be on your way to a sports internet business of your dreams!
