all.... It's been quite a while since I posted here and wanted to let you all know I was still around. Yes it's been busy... it always is actually. I've been off from some of my offline work this week working hard on my websites. I could use several weeks like this in a row and I might be able to catch up to a few of my projects that are currently brewing.

I am still making good money with adsense: around $300+ a month right now. My focus has shifted a bit to affiliate sales since I've had a bit of a breakthrough with a couple of products in particular and am making quite a bit more a month view affiliate sales. I really need to keep pushing ahead with those ideas since it's really running hot right now and has some room for expansion.

I think adsense and affiliate sales are both good and valid ways to make money online. Some sites and niches lend themselves better to one or the other. In fact, one affiliate product approached me about becoming their affiliate because they were getting adwords clicks from my site. They basically offered me a $100 bonus to become an affiliate and thought I would make more each month with affiliate sales than their adwords ads running in adsense on the site. Sure enough I was making $200 or more a month on one site within a couple weeks. So, I started rolling out a big expansion of that and some related sites to try to take good advantage of the product.

I still have adsense running on those sites although it's not as prominent as before and that has pushed the overall adsense revenue down by about 2-4 dollars a day per site. Yes... I was up in the $500 or more range for a good while (even up to $800 or so with adsense. (Another site was really cranking well for that stretch.)

I've ha another good milestone in the last few months. I managed to make over $2000 online for March of 2011 with all sources combined. Although this "week off" isn't over I've done some math and so far I've made about $400 while I've been "off work". Last time I had a week off I think I only made about $200 from my online projects so.... not bad. I only had to do something for about $75 of that, everything else was on autopilot.

This week has been all about putting in some big time on my other websites. I have a couple that have some very high paying ad clicks on average (several dollars a click.) They've been getting some good traffic in a couple specific topics and I had resolved that one of my priorities was to dig in and get more content in those topic areas to try to maximize the ad revenue I was getting over there.

In the last several months I've mostly worked out of the large part of one of my offline jobs. The income from that one has now dropped down to usually less than $500 a month. That big reduction in commitment has been possible thanks to my online work. It seems that everyday I have more ideas for sites or content, but.... very rarely have a lot fo time to write and do it. That's still a frustration, but I do see the summer coming and one of my offline jobs tends to slow down a good bit in the summer and I'll be having a bit more time to develop these other web projects.

These last few years have been fun to see the development of my online business(es). I'm hoping that this week will help shore up my adsense revenue somewhat and the added content may help me push back up towards $400 a month here soon.

So much to do, so little time.

The fact that we have a life offline. I have two offline jobs actually. One that provides a fairly predictable schedule with a relatively stable flow of income and limited demands outside scheduled hours and a second job that varies from absolutely nothing to sucking every minute of my waking attention. Now, the pay is hourly and it's a pretty good rate ($50/hour), but as most of you that have been in business know work is usually about more than just the "billable" hours". There are also the email messages back and forth, phone calls, the 15 minutes of looking at my calendar trying to figure out when I'm going to schedule someone.

Maybe I should take a lesson from lawyers and just start the clock each and every time I see an email in my inbox from a client, or the phone rings, but realistically they are not all "billable" problem solving calls. When this business cranks up it can be stressful and truth be told as my online work grows I hope to phase out some of the most stressful of these tasks. But, the problem is that our financial situation is not such that I can outright drop my offline work. The other problem is my offline work takes me away from building my online work and you can see where that's heading. I feel trapped many times because I don't have the time or energy to move forward with the online work and I don't want to drop things and let them go back to the abyss of 10-20 dollar earnings a month.

So, I've been trying a few strategies to still manage to "keep moving forward" with my online work. I've made no attempt to disguise the fact that I have outsourced more and more work in the last year. In many cases my decision is pure cost benefit. If I pay someone $10 to do the work it would take me several hours to muddle through.... then it's worth it to me. As long as that work is done well. With outsourcing various projects I have found that your mileage will vary. I've seen the results of some of the outsourcing I've done and frankly am sorry that I paid for a certain task or provider. I really have found some great resources though.

Outsourcing still takes time from what I've found. For the large part of several months that's part of the time I devoted my Friday's to. The first part was correspondence catch up for my other work, but the second half was "marching orders" and outsourcing. It could take a couple hours to outline everything that I wanted done though and many Friday's I just wasn't at a good mental state to try to organize that after having worked 60-80 hours Monday through Thursday.

So, I went back to an old fashioned, low tech idea. One day each week I usually get a chance for a real sit down lunch while I'm out. Now, most days it's not that luxurious.... most days it's fast food in about 5-15 minutes between appointments, but one day a week I really get to sit down and enjoy a lunch. Sometimes I'm lucky and get a few more chances at a real lunch, but I can pretty well count on one a week. I carry a spiral notebook and pen with me.

Back in my opening months of my "broad and sweeping plan to take over the world" as I like to refer to my online marketing (pinky and the brain cartoon reference there....) I would brainstorm every lunch and use my notebook to record my ideas. I started by just making a page for each site and jotting down ideas for articles as they came to me. Then, I started looking around me and out the window and getting ideas for different types of websites. For instance, signage is important, so many businesses and other groups use it.... I wonder if.... Those "wonder if's" or "what ifs" can be pretty powerful. Write everything down.

These days the notebook is a slightly different role. Yes, I still brainstorm on article ideas and site ideas, but I'm more concerned with "what should I do next for each site". In other words, which keywords should I target for growth in traffic, how do I market the site next?

Of course, you need to check keyword information online, but brainstorming for ideas is pretty easy offline. Chart out what you need to do next. Is there a certain page that should be getting traffic and hasn't - make some notes on it to work out what needs to be done next - break things up into small tasks.

Now, where I'm going with this is hopefully easy to see. You use that brainstorming time to start to carve up the tasks related to your sites into nice, small, manageable, well defined pieces. That means it's easy for you, if you have time to go ahead and get them done. It's also easy if you are outsourcing then to take your notes, type them up and send it along to your virtual assistant or chosen outsourcers and say, "this is what I want you to do".

I love carrying around the notebook... I use it for other things as well, but it's much better for brainstorming than anything else I've used. I prefer the small pocket size notebooks with lots of pages. (The chubby notebooks as they call them.) I've tried a laptop before, but it's limiting in many ways. I'm a fast typer, but sometimes the platform gets in the way of the task. Laptops have so many things to distract you. The internet is close at hand, email, stats all of which can suck time like a blackhole.

So, do yourself a favor - get a small notebook and start structuring what work needs to be done in those small moments of peace like lunch or before bed. I'd even vote to keep the notebook on the nightstand for those middle of the night brilliant ideas. I've already had one of those that I built a site out of and was glad to have it handy. (For me it was the second time the idea had hit, but I had long since forgotten it.)

Many people starting out just get overwhelmed. They have a day job and can't spend a whole lot of time, but EVERYTHING related to computers seems to suck time like a dry sponge. So, how much time should you spend?

Well, first off, spend the time you can. I have worked at earning money online with adsense alongside with two other offline jobs for a couple years. Sometimes I have lots of time to work with. (Two weeks away from offline work at Christmas for instance.) I'll also have some time if one of my jobs slows down for a bit. That basically just buys me mornings and early afternoons to work on my online projects though. Spring break for the schools my 2nd job is usually off and that can be a productive week and summers I can usually spend a bit more time. (My second job is loosely tied to the schools calendar and so fluctuates with the school breaks although I continue through summer I do see a drop off in the activity over the summer.)

So, I've put in what time I can for about 15 months now and have made it up to the range of about 600-800 per month from adsense.

If I didn't have another job at all of course I'd be plowing most all of my time into developing content, sites and links and I think if I did that I would see much greater and quicker benefits. Some things though, still take time to happen. For instance, older domains typically get a bit more respect from the search engines. You can't rush that (well there is a way you can but we'll talk about that later...) For the most part you have to sit and age the domain yourself and wait, build links, build content and wait. Although what will really benefit you big in the longterm is having lots of content for your site.

So, how much time should you spend? It really depends on what you can put into it. The bottom line is you will get out what you put in. It takes some time for adsense earnings from web properties and blogs to get churning but once it does get started I suspect you'll want (*or be able) to pour more time into it and you'll see even greater rewards assuming that you're playing by the rules.

Sometime this last year I designated Fridays as my day to work on my online projects. I don't have scheduled appointments for my second job on Fridays and now only rarely schedule appointments for my primary job on that day. Given that I'm making 600-800 per month I feel like it pays for my time to have that block of Fridays. (That's around $175 per day if there are four Fridays in the month.) Appointments at my primary job are billed at $50 an hour and it's rare that I have an appointment that would be worth more to me than the time I could put into the sites. (In fact I'm considering a rate increase for that work.)

Now, for me, it helps (in a way) that I'm self employed and have revenue coming from multiple projects and jobs. I like diversifying my income it keeps me a bit safer from a sudden shock in one area.

What about diversifying from adsense? I have in the past and will put more effort in again soon to develop more revenue options from my online sites. Currently adsense has outperformed everything with no exceptions. I will make it a priority, but first I would like my online income to match my offline income and at the current growth rate it may within the next year or so. Does that mean I'll quit my offline work? Probably not. My 2nd job is a really steady and stable income source and what's more.... I like it. Some days aren't all that great, but on the whole it's a great job. My primary work I'd probably be more likely to cut back on. But, I'm currently having to do so anyway due to health issues and time constraints as it is.

So... if you have nights and weekends to work and that's all for your online business, that's fine. Just make a plan for yourself. I like to carry around an idea notebook to jot down those article or site ideas. Take it with you to lunch and brainstorm while you eat. I also highly suggest to make a promotion plan for not only how a site will be built, what content you will have, but where you will try to get links from and what off site methods you'll use to promote it and get traffic for it.

It really all comes down to a cycle of Brainstorm, Research, Plan, Implement and rinse and repeat as they say. I spend a bit more time on the Implementing side than some people developing sites out further and further as the ideas continue to come. I have started in the last year or so breaking some of those mega sites up into smaller niche sites and at this point I see benefits to either approach. So, spend the time you can, just make sure you get past the research phase of things and jump in with both feet and start doing things and then build from there.

My offline businesses have been very busy as of late and I haven't had much time online for writing posts or any of the other work that earns money online.... So, for that reason we're hovering right around the same spot as we have been the last couple of months.

January wasn't particularly exciting, but it continued the 600+ trend netting 678.78 for the month. Some sites were up a bit, some sites were down a bit from December. Probably the biggest problem I'm facing right now is time. My offline work has been burning up 60-80 hours in a week and due to that and health issues I'm just too tired to keep working on promoting sites right now, and keeping up with content. It's very frustrating to me because I have a HUGE list of things I want/need to do to build this online business that I have started, but I have no time and am not making quite enough from it yet to seriously outsource.

I have made a bit of a decision on outsourcing though and am going to give a trial run of about three months to a particular company to outsource the potentially most beneficial part of my online work. (That part that I can expect the most return on investment.) I've also come up with some ways to try to still strategize what needs to be done and make plans even when you're swamped wall to wall with other work. I hope to be posting a write up on that as well. It's as much for my benefit as it is for yours because I get very frustrated with my lack of time (and energy when I do have the time.) This is one method that has helped me to stay somewhat sane and continue working towards my online goals through this recent flurry of activity.

So, I'm not happy with the performance in January, but given the circumstances it's probably not too bad. Currently February is looking to be a bit more of a drop off as well (I don't know if we'll see $500), but there's still have the month to go and things could change as I work my new outsourcing options. I've canceled most all of my subscriptions to things that require me to spend a couple hours or more doing something each month simply because I can't justify paying month after month if I can't follow through on the execution. Some of the outsourcing is to replace that work which, to be honest I haven't been able to get much done with since October.

As for writing posts - I'm still trying to keep up with that across my sites, although it has become somewhat sporadic. I'm looking at some options on some of the sites that may help pad out what I do with content from others.

I'm not one of those people that things you have to keep updating sites to be in the good search rankings, but new posts are important for a number of reasons - 1) going after new search keyphrases 2) reminding people that you still exist and potentially getting links back from them depending on the post. Now, google will crawl a site at the rate that it thinks the site (or page) changes, but I don't buy into the idea that you have to keep changing to be listed high in the search results. Some of the top pages that I've run across have been archived for years, it was just a great, useful page and it got a lot of links and references from others.

The bottom line though is I'm going to be outsourcing more after feeling somewhat in a paralysis for several months and we'll see what that may achieve.

You'll see the forum posts all the time.... "I want to post an article that I wrote for an article site on my website but don't want to get hit with the duplicate content penalty. How much should I rewrite to make it different enough so google won't penalize me." Usually this is followed by suggestions of article spinner software or "you should have put it on your site first" or something else that doesn't even question the premise of a duplicate content penalty.

For a long time I've suspected and then known that most people completely misunderstand the duplicate content "penalty" that google has. What they try to do is avoid providing duplicate results from the same site. Think about a blog style site where the same articles may show up under several categories or tags. Maybe a paragraph summery on the main page and that is duplicated on the real post page. They don't want 300 results from your site when they all contain the same text if one result will do.

What it doesn't mean is one site will be penalized if there's a copy of content from another site. That's more of a copyright issue and really out of Google's day to day business in determining. For instance, how would they KNOW if I don't have the rights to republish something on my site that I used a pseudonym to write up for another site. If there were an issue that's for the two parties involved to deal with. Not google!

But how can I prove or show to people that this duplicate content thing is a myth when we talk about multiple domains having similar content....

As I was researching the purchase of a gre psr-300 scanner for review on one of my websites recently.... it dawned on me that this kind of item was a perfect example of blowing up the duplicate content myth. Take some time to look for a product that has boiler plate description from the manufacturer and a list of specs. Now start searching for it. Search for sentences from the boilerplate "our product slices, dices and operates like no other" .... you'll find it copied and pasted all over the internet. Many listings on ebay, amazon, pick a site and it will be the same text.

Now, I guess you could argue that big sites like that are immune to the duplicate content penalty... but the thing is it's not just the big sites like that, it's also small vendors. Everyone seems to copy and paste the stock description and specs. Well... some might say the content is really different because each site has different navigation and "other" stuff on the page as well.

Well, if that's true then WHY should you be concerned about an exact reprint of your article from an article directory on YOUR site. Don't you have different navigation and other "stuff" on the page than the article directory? So..... don't worry about it. If you really want, rewrite it or change it a bit, but the truth is you will not be penalized in the search results for having content on your site that you've also published elsewhere. Oh, and watch out for those that are trying to tell you there is to sell you something....

Now, one other thing I should note is that some sites have a distinct rule that the content you submit should not have been published elsewhere and they have means of checking. That is completely different than what we're discussing with regards to google. For those sites either publish your articles over there first, or write a couple different versions to make sure they're unique.

It was much beyond the clickthrough rate that I normally see and was obvious that one visitor was click happy. Fortunately I wasn't credited with any money from those clicks and then started to dig deeper into my stats tracking. I found the IP address and the referrer and also found some tracking of the time that ads were clicked. (The IP was located in Inda and I have more detail but will not discuss it here.)

Since this was out of the ordinary I reported it to Google adsense via the form they have for suspicious click activity. (Here is their invalid clicks contact form. You might also notice that I've disabled the ads here for the present time. I don't know if that was necessary or not, but would rather be safe than sorry and see continued attempts at click fraud against my account. I may do the same for all of my lower traffic sites until they reach a certain traffic threshold. I haven't decided on that yet.

Another resource you may be interested in if you are also an adsense publisher and have had unusual traffic and click activity is to look at the Adsense help resource guide on the topic "Invalid Click Issues and Concerns". I hope by being proactive in this I (and others) can help to protect their accounts from people that either target someone out of spite, ignorance or who knows what other motivation.

It's sad to think it, but I suspect sour grapes could be the motivation for this and it is one reason that I've disabled ads for the time being. I've had several correspondences with people asking for advice about their adsense account or why they haven't been approved by adsense and I recall telling more than one that it was because they were quite flagrantly in violation of the terms of adsense. Some people don't seem to take the truth well even if it's meant constructively. I've run into this once before years ago when I had a site hacked and deleted within a day of having someone contentiously argue over advertising rates. Some people can be spiteful and unfortunately they overshadow those that aren't simply because their actions can cause such frustration and consume so much of your time.

That much said.... it makes me wonder if there is an easy way to block adsense from loading for specific ip addresses (or blocks of addresses)? That would be one way to go ahead and block of "bad neighborhoods" and prevent certain visitors from being consistent sources of problems (unless they were sophisticated enough to bypass via tor or other means of cloaking a source ip.)

A tracking cookie + maybe some sort of javascripting that acted as an advertising "kill switch" for a user that was too click happy might be a possibility, but I wouldn't know how to accomplish this. I have seen some plugins that claim to protect your site ads from multiple clicks and may be looking into those and seeing how they dovetail with the adsense guidelines.

TO summarize, I have always done everything possible to play within the rules of adsense. I have always tried to avoid even the appearance of anything close to infringing on their rules and hope that I have done what I needed to in this case. I also hope that you never have the misfortune of having one of your sites targeted by someone for click happiness, but if you do I hope that this article may help give you some ideas as to how you can deal with it.

I'll also be updating you if I hear anything back from google regarding this incident. (Although I may not hear anything from them according to the information they provide on the form.)

--Update-- 2:25pm

I have done a bit of looking around and found over at jensense.com a summary of the policies from Google on protecting your account from invalid clicks. Among the things that she notes is that Google officially discourages the use of 3rd party software to protect their ads because it may divulge sensitive information or may prevent the legitimate display of ads. (I recall seeing some buzz about a 3rd party script that was supposed to help protect against multiple clicks I think now this may be the same software that she mentions early in the article. Frankly if they were spamming adsense users with fake disabled account notices - they must be slimey.)

Also she notes that one of their tips is to be careful about the places that traffic is purchased from (pay per click ads/etc.) At this time, I do not purchase traffic for any of my sites that have adsense on them mainly for the reason taht the quality of traffic is typically poor (which in turn makes for uninterested people clicking links and that means poor return on investment for the advertisers and is essentially the recipe for being smartpriced.)

Note to all - SEARCH traffic is the best most targeted. If you do get pay per click traffic to your site, make sure that it is closely targeted to the search terms relevant to your landing pages or you will find that things will not work out well for you. (1) You'll waste advertising money, 2) you wont do well with your ads for the long term. My earnings were down over the Thanksgiving weekend, but up for the week or two surrounding Christmas. There could be a couple other reasons for this though. In November my "other work" had kept me too busy to really have good fresh content on my big current money maker site. For those of you that don't know, although I have a LOT of sites, currently there is one that accounts for probably 50% of my earnings and 4 sites probably cover 80-90% of my adsense revenue. The site that brings in the most right now is bringing in the most because the content is trending search content in a specific niche. The search phrases shift a bit each week and sometimes one search phrase will have legs for a couple weeks. By contrast the other sites I work on tend to be for search phrases that are solid long term searches.

My hope (of course) is to finally get to a point where these stable, high volume over the long haul searches are what I am making most of my adsense earnings from, but since they're stable long term searches there are a few other people trying to do the same. It's a long term plan. However right now my money is coming mostly from short term stuff and if I don't update then.... my content gets stale and I see a decline which I think is what happened in November. December saw a rebound because I had (and took) more time to work on content for my sites as well as promotion through a number of methods.

So... for the year 2009 I made approximately (since they've started listing estimated earnings until the payments are finalized...) 5569.35 which is an average of 15.25 per day. (Currently my average over the last two weeks is almost twice that which I find encouraging as it still means I'm on an up-trend.)

2008 by comparison was the year I started back into adsense and search targeting for my sites. I toyed with it early in 2008, but then returned seriously about August/September of 2008.... so the total for 2008 was.... 895.15 or $2.44 (and a half) cents per day (366 days for 2008).

And 2007 when everything was pretty much left to run itself as 261.17 or 71.5 cents per day.

So, from 2008 to 2009 I've increased my online business revenue by over 6 times. (Over 600%?) Given everything that is being said about the economy I have to be happy with this. Not content, because I want to see it grow another 6.22 times.... In fact the growth from 2007 to 2008 is a fairly reasonable 3.4 times growth (or 340% increase.) I can tell you my stock holdings haven't seen that kind of growth this last year or two. So... if my growth rate continues for calendar year 2010 then I may see between 18,000 and 34,000 for the year (?!) We'll see. I'm not going to just sit around and hold my breath waiting on it to happen.

Really 2009 was not heading to be such a huge increase until I tripped over an idea in September that pushed my current big earning site into big earnings. Even extracting that sites increased earnings from the total for the year leaves me with about 4.88 times an increase over the prior year. So everything seems to be growing, some things faster than others.

So, how did I get this far? Lots and Lots of time soaking up information and then acting on it. Build sites, write content, promote, gain more sources of traffic, write more and keep at it. Don't waste your time buying every product that is shoved your way promising the secret to making lots of money with no work. Don't believe them, it's work... it may not be the same as cleaning toilets or plowing a field, but you're going to spend some time even if you have some capital to outsource the grunt work... it even takes time to manage outsourcing projects.

This year I have done more in the way of outsourcing because I can. I've designated 15% of my adsense revenues to plow back in (and 100% of my lulu.com revenues) and use to finance resources that are beneficial to getting better search rankings. Take that as you will, I've hired article writers from time to time, and other promotional services from time to time as well. There is no single "magic" silver bullet. As some say though it's just about MASSIVE ACTION. Get it done, and keep moving forward.

Now, to close.... I know $5500 isn't a great amount of money to get excited about in the big scheme of things, but it's like that old puzzler about a kid asking a guy for a job and asking to only be paid a penny on day one and then double the pay each day... it adds up to some really money quicker than you think. In fact, 2 more years at this growth rate and things could be VERY interesting!

November earnings

Wow, I'm guessing that google must be liking what they've seen with the previous reduction in hot trend phrases from 100 to 50 as they'e now (as of today (the 16th of December) dropped their number of "hot trend" items down to just the top twenty. In some ways I am disappointed because there is a lot of potential in the top one hundred hot trends to be able to find terms that someone could quickly rank for and garner a lot of sudden traffic to be able to convert well for some good adsense earnings.

However, there were some that made use of these for much more nefarious reasons. Attack sites.... see here's at least one way that it works.... so if the hot trend is some celebrities peephole video (yes there have been a LOT of searches for that....) some group throws together a page (or several) that target that phrase, rank somewhere in the top ten and get traffic. Then they do either a) a redirect from the bait page to a drive by download page or aggressive malware scan.... or b) on the destination page they may claim to have the video, but ALAS.... you don't have the correct driver to view it (or your flash player needs an update to view it....) please download the codec/update here... in each case the payload is malware and then you find your next few days spent searching for...

"how to remove guardpcs" or how to remoe system adware scanner 2010 or yet another of these rogue antivirus applications. Seriously, you may not be bit by these exact titles, but you will seriously regret your search.

That's at least one example of how the hot trends have been abused along with sites that simply use the rss feed and manage to get indexed and search traffic just from syndicating the hot trends feed. (Without adding anything to the discussion...) Of course, there are also the sites where people seem skilled in rambling on about..... "it looks like everyone is searching now for ____ _____. I don't really know what it is and am trying to find out more about ___ ____ but I'm sure once I find out about ____ _____ I will be able to fill you in on more information..." you get the gist. Please someone help these people to at least actually try to write something meaningful about the search phrase.

Anyway, I've done fairly well with trending topics and hope that they read better than the above examples. On to the earnings report for November.... the last month and a half or so have been hectic with other work (and sickness - H1N1). Anyway, I'm down a bit from Octobers great numbers, but we made it to 612.10 for November. I was a bit disappointed, but of course, you don't put in the time you don't get the results. So, the last week or so I've been working at organizing some outsourcing so that we can hopefully see some good results going forward.

This month is heading to match or better November, and if the outsourcing projects that I've started pay off, then we may see an increase around Christmas through New Years Eve. (Not to mention that I'm expecting that web traffic will probably be heavy that stretch with people taking off work, school and other activities around the holidays.

The best day I've ever had from adsense was bout 60 on a day in the week between Christmas and New Years. Obviously I'm hoping to repeat or best that this year - you never know. Anyway, my long term goals are focusing on more stable consistent search phrases. Short term hot trends can be big traffic and easier to rank for, but can be tiring to keep up with.

Speaking of which, I need to spend some time here coming up in going into more detail about researching a niche, ranking for pages and the like. Right now, I seem to have relatively low traffic search phrases and am in the process of "working my way up" to higher traffic search phrases. There is another thing I wanted to get into detail on as well and that is outsourcing and finding a way to budget for outsourcing because I think most will find that is the easiest way to really leverage their time well by giving someone else some of the long tedious tasks and making better use of your own time for either managing the outsourcing projects or managing your overall adsense business. Of course, at this point this post is getting much too long to start to delve into any of those areas, so I will leave them as a tease for the future.

I haven't been able to do an update since the September Adsense earnings update. My other work has been quite busy and October found me with two rounds of being sick. The first I thought was H1N1, the second really was..... not fun, but I think I'm finally getting back to a point where I'll be doing more updates here and at many of my other sites.

Earnings continued fairly strong and made October the best month I've ever had with Adsense. Much of it was on the back of trending searches. Not much of the income is from sites that I feel like I can just leave alone for months on end. So, how much did I update? Maybe 3-5 posts within a week.

So the grand total for the month was 880.13 and it looks as though November may be a little lower. We've already hit the payout threshold for the month, but are running a bit lower average than I saw early in October. That could change as I make more time to work on the sites and get more of a chance to update and write articles on some of these more trending search items.

I'm also putting in some time trying to develop and improve rankings for some of my other keywords that tend to get more search volume all the time, day in and day out. These are the places that I hope to really establish a solid "churn" with in the near future. I currently have a fairly solid 10 dollars a day from a selection of sites that aren't getting frequent updates. Some of the newer sites that are targeted towards more solid search traffic phrases are starting to pick up some visits for long tail phrases enough so that I will at least get one to two good clicks a day out of any one of a half dozen or so of them. There's still much more work to do.

I've also started using submityourarticle.com mainly for backlink development and will hopefully be able to see some results soon. I know it's still not where I'd like them to be, but I made more for the month from Google adsense than I ever have. I also had several $40+ days and exactly half of the months days were better than $20.

There is only one day that I have earned more than I did during this last month. (a $59.99 day several years ago.) But, in recent weeks I've hit upon a bit of a formula for some short term big traffic when the timing is right. It is related to the article I did on Google Trends, but it's a bit of a twist. I'm not going to get into much of any detail on it at this point though.

Anyway, the total for September: $665.19

That's almost 200 more than my next closest month and frankly several of the irons I have in the fire are not even close to the point I expect them to get, so... I'm hoping that this is establishing a new floor and we're going to keep going up.

Most of the earnings this last month were from what I consider short term work. I'm hoping to transition to a point before long where I start seeing some results from some keywords that I'm chasing that are long term keywords though. Let me explain.... A short term keyword is something like a one hit wonder in the world of music. It's the kind of name or keyword phrase that is on everyones lips for a day, a week, month or season, but then it starts to disappear and is gone. Then there are the names that are on peoples minds throughout the year, even from year to year or decade to decade. Those are the kinds of keywords I would RATHER rank for as long ast they're buying keywords.

Not that the trendy stuff can't pay well, but it's more work to keep up with. That much said, I'll probably try to keep from ignoring the idea of the quick trends in the future as they've done quite well for me the last couple months.

Hopefully in the course of the next month or two I'll be able to review for you a linkbuilding approach that I often see written about, but from a firsthand point of view that may help me with some of those long term keywords. Keep moving forward!

It is partly due to the integration of trends data into some of the hot current search results. So, they've pruned things down according to one person at Google so as not to overwhelm the new users that will now be exposed to the trend data with too much information.

They also note that the side effect may be that there is less search spam. I suspect the reasoning may be more about this later item mainly because the same article seemed to imply that the trends data would still show up in searches for the 100 top search items, they just won't be listed in one convenient spot.

There have been a lot of shady things going on with hot trends for some time. I came across trends for a second time recently and discovered some trending searches for rogue software removal. As I was researching I found MANY of the top 10 sites for that search were really attack sites hosting the same kind of rogue antivirus that the searches were looking for info on how to remove. In recent days as I've looked at other searches (say for instance celebrity related) the same thing was happening - a sudden redirect from one of the results to an attack site that closed the browser down to a a postage stamp and popped up a message that I must scan with **Phony antivirus of the day** or viruses would eat my computer and all sorts of other rubbish.

In addition to the attack sites I also found redirects to other information in many cases totally unrelated to the topic of the search. This is just to clever for their own good web site owners trying to get a boost in traffic. Never mind that it's not targeted traffic, never mind that the site has nothing to do with what they were searching for, never mind that none of them will every be back. It's like a store putting out a sign for free pizza and inside there's no food. Most, if not all people will NOT be back.

Of course, there have also been sites that are nothing more than regurgitated rss feeds of the hot trends. Scrape the rss from hot trends - rss from search results for the trends, have it update and refresh the feeds every fifteen minutes or so in an autoblogging fashion and voila you have a money making machine.

At least this last approach is getting relevant traffic to it's pages and should be better off for the long term.

So, it's become a bit harder for the above to function - but still not impossible and it's not impossible to take advantage of hot trends in other ways as well. The link above gives a listing of other sites that provide similar trending search information.

You can make money in your sleep you will live a life of leisure sitting on some private island sipping drinks in the afternoon. You'll summon the help to bring you your laptop, check your earnings and see that for this afternoons leisure you've made a nice $3758 you lucky devil.

Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but you don't get money for nothing. Even adsense. Yes, even adsense. What? You say the ad tells you that you can make thousands a month just "posting links on google". Bull! Now, I'll admit it beats digging ditches, but earning money online is something that takes a lot of hard work. No, not the life that bag, tote that pail kind of work, but still long hours and thought.

Yes you can make a bit of money clicking ads and taking surveys. It's not long term sustainable though. Really, adsense comes the closest to the money for nothing idea but it's far from NOTHING that it takes to get good adsense earnings. First off, you have to write some actual content for your sites so that you'll have something to post ads on. Okay, some people outsource that and that's fine, but you still have to research and figure out what kinds of things are going to drive traffic to your site and figure out how to get those targeted people to your site so they can see your content and click your ads. Frankly, I don't care as much that they see the content, it's just important that the search engines see the content so they can figure out which targeted people to send to me. You act essentially as a middleman bringing together sellers (ad buyers) and buyers (search visitors). You make both parties happy and anywhere from a few cents to a few dollars in the process. The key is scaling it up.

So many people flit from one model of making money online to another like a fly with ADD. They keep looking for THE plan to make money online easy. The latest greatest. That's why there are so many people shoveling out the MMO products, because I would guess 75% of the crowd shops from one idea to the next. Do THEY make money online? Probably not, they're too busy buying (and occasionally reading) what the MMO salespeople are giving them. For the most part they're looking for a way to have lightning strike without doing any work.

What they need to be doing is learn ONE way to make money online (instead of 20), study the ins and outs of that method from start to finish, apply it, learn from their mistakes, refine it and succeed (even if it's on a small scale.) Why? SCALE. Online it's possible to scale most anything up. If you can make a $10 profit a month you can make a $10,000 profit a month, it's just a matter of scaling up your prospects.

No this doesn't necessarily mean making your one site bigger, nor does it mean making 100s of sites (necessarily), but it can. You have to figure out HOW to scale what you do. Figure out what works best for you and keep doing it over and over and over. Learn from the mistakes, regroup and motivate yourself to keep pushing ahead.

Do you know why we have electric lights today? Because Thomas Edison took the idea of the light and worked for hours and days and weeks trying to find a material that would work better. After dozens and dozens of tests he knew lot's of materials that wouldn't work for a light filament and KEPT GOING.

Take a look at your money making plans. Figure out what is required to see if they will work or not, implement them, fulfill the requirements listed, see if you've made money, plan your revisions to the idea or scale it depending on the outcome. It's that simple. So, if you're plan is to make money with advertising supported sites: What do I need to make this work... I see that keywords x, y and z get a total of 1000 search views a day and are low competition so.... I need to get my site to the top for those three phrases to see if this will make money. Build, test, put it on the top search page and see what happens. Then either try again with another site or move on to a different approach.

Probably the most important thing though is to KEEP moving with your plans. Don't stagnate. Develop a good routine and work your routine until you can evaluate whether or not it's going to work. If it works, but has a small return that's fine, look for ways to scale it. But most importantly, keep working at it.

I'm getting more into the keyword research side of things. Keyword research is something that I really haven't done well, or done much of up to this point. I've really had the ranking for a keyword side of things down. I know how to rank for keywords. Some take longer to rank for than others, but I know what it takes to compete there. What I haven't been good at is identifying high paying or high traffic keywords. So, one of my first revelations was the targeting of higher paying keywords. I spent some time developing out a few ideas to work on that and saw some good benefits in just a few days.

Then I ran across something that reminded me of Googles hot trends. Every hour of the day you can check the hot trends with google and you will see an updated list of what the 100 most searched for things are on the internet. I skimmed the list and it was really mostly celebrity stuff, but I found a few ideas that were related to one of my sites and so I did some quick writing and racked up quite a bit over a couple days. I think the first of those days was the end of August which helped to push August earnings well above July.

So, I made $382.51 with adsense in August. Adding that to some of my other streams put me over $400 and September is looking promising.

Now, google hot trends usually are things that come and go. So, the good traffic I got out of the one or two that I targeted lasted about 3-5 days. I'm still getting about a hundred visits a day on one article on the topic, but I must say I haven't done much work targeting the keywords with backlinks since the first night I worked on it. That evening I threw out a few articles that had a few targeted keyword backlinks as well. I recycled the article from the main site for posting on a few other sites, bookmarked and really was in the top 10 for the first couple days on my main site.

But, it really underscored something else that I've ignored TOO much and that is simply good keyword research is a good first place to start. I had done some keyword research before but because I didn't know what I was doing.... well things didn't turn out the way I expected. For instance, I would use googles external keyword tool and find a good looking traffic keyword that made good CPC for the search ads. Now, I never thought I'd get that much for an ad, maybe 25-50% of that search CPC, but it was a good way to filter out the chinsy search phrases and find some valuable things to write on.

What I neglected though was the distinction between broad and exact search machine. Take the keyword phrase baby bottles for instance. It may have 100,000 searches a month broad match because the broad match includes the people searching for glass baby bottles, plastic baby bottles, disposable baby bottles, etc. ANYTHING that includes those 2 words. Exact match though, may only have 5,000 searches a month. (I don't know for this phrase, haven't run the numbers for it.) Exact match is ONLY those people searching for EXACTLY the phrase baby bottles with no extra wording.

So, some of the keyword phrases I was excited about a month or two ago I've gone back and looked at with exact search and can see why I'm not getting the traffic I expected. Because I was looking at broad search and while broad search may get 100 search views a day, the exact search may only get 10 search views a day. So, I've been busy now doing a lot of keyword research prior to writing so I can have a good list of higher traffic and lower competition keywords for each site that I can go back and try to renovate some of my existing sites and start out with new sites with a slightly different perspective. It's certainly not guaranteed success, but it raises the odds somewhat.

It's also a good point to take the google keyword traffic numbers with a grain of salt. I've seen some people suggest throwing up an adwords ad for the keyword phrase and really see how many impressions you get, but that's not something I've tried (yet). It may be worthwhile at some point.

So, anyway I'm seeing some good trends and learning some good resources for keyword research

As a traffic source I know many people see google as capricious and unreliable. If you rank well and have a site that gets good consistent traffic from them, you are in love with them. If you lose that ranking, odds are you gnash your teeth at their name and wonder what could be if you only ranked well again. If you look around though, google will even tell you what get's traffic. Seriously, over at his Make Money Online Site, Grizz has said several times to look at the top sites for a search result because google tells you what will rank well. Well, it also tells you what the popular searches are. I'm talking about hot trends. I was just recently reminded to take a look at this again. I have spent a good deal of time chasing searches that I see as long term goals that get consistent traffic, sometimes I overlook the fact that if you act quickly there's money to be made exploiting a trend that may last a few days (if that.)

So, last night I did an experiment with windows police pro and green av remove. One of these two I managed to rank #1 for a period of time last night and I'm in the top 10 for both as I write this. In spite of being in the lower half of the top ten, the site hosting these writeups has received about 3x it's normal daily traffic in the last 12 hours. It helps that the site ranks well anyway and so putting up a post is fairly quickly spidered and usually get's a decent search ranking on it's own (without backlinks).

I did however spend some time rewriting and posting similar articles elsewhere which have also been getting a decent amount of traffic over the last twelve hours. Now, I don't aim to chase hot trends all the time. It can be a tiring process. When I started my computer site I chased the breaking news stories for several months. I had dozens of posts a day, lots of traffic, made some money, but it probably wasn't worth the time I put in. At that time I didn't have a way of knowing which breaking news items would be the hot topics I just chased all that I thought looked like a good match.

I don't know how much longer I'll get traffic on these searches, but it's good while it lasts and if I've done everything right who knows, I may continue to get a trickle of traffic in the future off these (and related) phrases.

One thing that's interesting to point out is that I'm seeing LOTS of variations on these phrases that are really helping to add to the traffic volume. In many cases they're variations on the how to remove or removal of or removing and then the pest in question. (If you don't know these are rogue security programs that claim to be antivirus or antispyware and in reality create more headaches than solutions.)

Monetization can be Adsense (CPC), CPA or affiliate products on hot trends if you have something that matches. Now, a word of warning - if you just try to get bulk traffic from a hot trend search and have nothing related in your page and are monetizing with adsense you may make a bit to start with and then find yourself steeply smart priced. So, if you want to keep your account long term producing don't try to bait and switch.

So, when I started out trying to earn money online with a blog I just followed my interests and really I did okay. I got to a point where I was making a bit of money, but it wasn't nearly worth the work I was putting into it and I seemed to have reached a ceiling that I wasn't able to punch through no matter how hard I tried to get more backlinks, better search rankings, whatever.... I was stuck.

At that point I had the epiphany that so many internet marketers try to hammer home. You need to do keyword research. Why? Frankly because you have no clue what paople will pay for ads on. Seriously. After I started doing keyword research I thought of a few things that surely would bring in high paying ads. The ad rates were pitiful. I searched more and I did find some areas with some good paying ads. So, if you just want to work online and write, don't worry about keyword research and write to your hearts content. If you want to make money online you REALLY need to be doing some keyword research.

So, is this the place where I sell you some tool that will slice and dice search results and make ou a millionaire overnight? No, because I'm cheap and I don't run windows so that cuts me out of the market for most of the Keyword research software on the market. So, HOW do you do keyword research. Ahhhhhh..... that's the question that you can run around for a long time looking for answers to. You'll also find many interpretations. Keep reading we're going somewhere with all this.

Okay. First tool in the arsenal: Google's External Keyword Tool for Adwords. WHat?? I don't want to buy ads I want to make money from ads! Stop and think a minute - adwords is the "inventory" that you are going to be placing on your sites to make money. By investigating what it would take to BUY an ad with adwords we'll have a better idea of what we can MAKE money on with adsense. What's really cool about this tool is you can type in a broad idea like landscaping and it will spit back ALL sorts of suggestions on the phrase. So, when you get the report go and under "Choose columns to display" choose Show Estimated Avg. CPC and if you want sort it by the Avg. CPC (two clicks to get highest to lowest sorting.) Okay - at the time of this writing I see that landscaping lighting is demanding around $4 a click for an advertiser to buy the spots. What would that mean for us if we had a lowly website about landscaping lighting? Well, I'll tell you, a site will never get 100% of the CPC because you split it with Google. Also, depending on your site's quality in Google's eyes you may make a lower or higher percentage. A rough guess would be say 30%-60% of the CPC. Frankly I don't know, it could be lower, I doubt it would get much higher.

Keep looking at the listing..... you should see local search volume for a recent full month and Global monthly search volume. You may want to change the little drop down box that says "broad match" to exact match to get an idea of how many searches a month there are for JUST that phrase specifically. Okay - it lowers the volume a bit. I think if you look for items with 100 or more searches a month (locally) that should be a good place to start. Also, if you look further down the page you will find OTHER search phrase suggestions that may be more interesting. Lawn care services for instance at this time garners about $13 a click.

SO, what now - do we start building sites for the more lucrative keywords? No, not yet. I sincerely believe that the top spot in the search results is do-able for ANY keyword, but.... frankly I'd prefer something that is easier to achieve in a short amount of time, so.... let's do a search on the phrases. (Pick your favorite 5 or 10 and open up a new tab.)

For this, I highly suggest using Firefox with the SEO for firefox plugin enabled. Search on one of the phrases you've picked and add up the Pagerank of the results. Is it less than 10? Fantastic! This is short term approachable and should be easy to rank. Look at registering a domain with your keywords and get to building a site. In fact, if it's less than 30 total you're probably going to be able to rank well in weeks with a bit of work, maybe a month or two. If it's more than 300 total pagerank on the top ten you really have to ask yourself if you're ready to commit long term to rank well for this phrase. It's possible, but above 30 I suspect you're going to work for months to get to the top and it may take longer (years) as the total pagerank get's higher. Of course, this all assumes that you stick to more traditional safe, white and grey hat methods for increasing your sites ranking. It's possible to get there faster, but there are no guarantees you'll stay there using other methods.

Another research tool for finding the relative search volumes of terms is Google Insights for search. There are a couple phrases that I have a pretty good feel for the search volume and typically I'll use those as a comparison phrase. One good thing here is you can see suggestions for breakout phrases, you can see WHERE a search phrase is popular, etc.

I made $348.57 from Adsense in July which was a shade higher than June's numbers ($328.46). Now, I had spent a fair amount of time and work in the month of June on trying to increase traffic to my sites and raise their search engine visibility somewhat. Most of that work I expect to see the results of in August since this was done in the last couple weeks of the month.

To tell the truth though, the last week may have already reflected some of the work I had put in. Towards the end of July though I had a bit of an epiphany about my adsense earnings. I realized that 60% of my earnings come from just two sites. These two sites average very low per click prices somewhere in the territory of small pocket change. Our longest serving President comes to mind..... This epiphany came after seeing a $2.95 click on one of my other sites. Now, I've got to admit that up until now, I haven't bothered with much keyword research. I've focused my sites on topics that I'm interested in and like. They also happen to be areas where not many advertisers are paying big money.....

This realization that it was not only possible, but the evidence was in front of me that there were higher valued clicks out there and the realization that I've never done heavy keyword research led me to realize that I needed to make a change to my tactics in my entire approach to adsense. That shift is why I started this blog, because I wanted to document my realization that hopefully will take me from doing just okay with adsense to me doing VERY well with adsense. Some quick math proved out that it wouldn't take too big an increase in the per click earnings average to have adsense matching our offline income. (You don't have to get all the way up to $2.95 for that to happen.... but if we do get the average up there.... that could be significant.)

You see, I already know how to get traffic for sites, I know how to get quick traffic and I know how to get good traffic and to tell the truth they are NOT one and the same. I'm fairly skilled at getting a site to rank well which is in my opinion a key factor in doing well with adsense. But, along the time of this epiphany I've also come up with a good way to find and target new niches, quickly evaluate if they're worth my time, evaluate whether or not I have a chance to rank in the short term, or if it will take longer to get there and this all just "jelled" for me.

I had about 15 active web sites at the time I made the realization that 2 sites were making up 60% of my earnings (in fact 3 sites make up 75%-80% of my earnings up until now.) My new focus is going to be targeting more valuable keywords to try to raise my average earnings per click. Now, some niches pay better than others, but some are more competitive than others too, meaning it will take longer to rank, tougher to stay there.

The results that I've posted here for July is hopefully just a starting point as I push out to work on implementing my new tactics. I will also be sharing the main idea of what I'm doing here. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to tell ABSOLUTELY everything or if I'll leave some things hidden behind the curtain. There is, after all, a good deal of money to be made and really much of this is VERY easy to do. But, whatever I decide I'll bring my readers along for the ride.

So, what if this is all a miserable failure and I don't wind up increasing my adsense earnings? I'll tell you and I'll do what I can to learn from the experience as well and pinpoint where the mistakes are.

I can't claim to have made millions (yet) although gradually I have learned many things about search engine optimization and getting traffic online and it seems lately I'm learning more and more about adsense and how to go about trying to earn money online with adsense the right way.

Several years ago I had a blog. It was a computer/tech related blog and I still have it actually. I had just got a chance to stick adsense on there and lo and behold I was making money. Not a lot at first, but some money. Of course, this had me thinking about a few other web ideas which I plunged ahead with and didn't see a great amount of money from, but the "spark" was still there. you know what I'm talking about by that "spark". It's that moment when you see that it's possible to make money in a way you never really considered before. "I could be earning money in my sleep..." Well, I pursued the blog with all my free time throwing post after post up. I had an rss feed reader on the desktop and would watch for potentially hot stories and try to be first to cover them. I did fairly well to tell the truth. I had a few days that were in the 50-60 dollar range and really thought what I was doing could replace my offline work.

It was exhausting to keep up with and it didn't last long. The great Google had their Big Daddy search update and my blog went from being in favor to lost in cyberspace. I hadn't been doing anything shady with regards to getting links. In fact, I really hadn't thought about getting links at all. I hadn't promoted the site at all. I went from an average of 10 dollars or so a day to an average of 60 cents a day.

There were other things happening in my offline work and I really didn't get much time to investigate what happened. But, slowly I learned that backlinks to a site were going to be very important in relation to how a site ranks overall or for a specific search term. I studied everything I could find out about search engine marketing and search engine optimization. I read the details of every "google bomb" that I could and finally in the last year or so decided I had studied enough and it was time to put what I had learned into practice.

So, I started promoting several of my sites and before long I have now made it north of $300 a month again with my adsense earnings. I was fairly pleased. Although, I was finding that it seemed as though 3 of my sites were accounting for 75% of my earnings and although I had great click through rates it seemed that my average earnings per click weren't what I would like.

So, now, I've completed some deep study of that issue as well and have come to a new approach moving forward. This site is where I will share many of the things I've learned and tell you how my new focuses approach turns out.

If what I have come up with is successful I should start to see some good progress (assuming I have time to implement it) in coming months. If not, I'll try to learn from what happens and adapt and move forward.

So, why am I telling all of this? Because I want to keep a handy reference for myself first and foremost. I have more text document and references related to adsense money making than I can count. Putting it in a blog makes it easier for me to find. ;-) But, won't someone just copy what I've done? Yes, they may if they have the persistence. But, if they had the persistence they would probably figure it out eventually anyway. Plus, many of these things are things I was told to do long ago and was too thick to see that they were right.
