Are You Over-Thinking Your Diet?

If you stop anyone on the street in this country today, there is a great chance that they will be on a diet. Low-fat, low-carb, no meat, no dairy, sugar free, gluten free: these types of diets are wide and varied. When looking at the world's population, the communities that have the highest rates of longevity show a large array in the types of foods they consume, but one commonality is seen across all of the world's oldest communities--they eat a high percentage of plant based foods, which are relatively low fat.

Many health experts are coming into the agreement that there is no one "cure all" diet for every person, but the more plants you eat, the better it is for your health. Aim to get more of your calories from plants per day than from animal sources. It is really that simple.

Okinawa, Japan, continues to be among one of the oldest living and healthiest populations on Earth. The people in Okinawa show an 80 percent lower instance of heart disease, 75 percent lower cases of prostate and breast cancer, and 67 percent lower risk of dementia than the population of the U.S. These people regularly consume a high amount of carbohydrates, including grains and legumes. They eat about 6 percent of their diet from fat, low animal products, and high amounts of sea vegetables.

Of course, you do not have to adopt a Japanese diet to increase your longevity. Simply focusing on increasing vegetable intake can drastically lower your risk of heart disease, and increasing consumption of raw vegetables may help you to get to 100. One study found that people who ate five servings of vegetables and fruits daily, lived about 3 years longer than those who did not, even eating just one fruit can extend your life by 1.5 years.

The answer to a healthier life really is that simple. Increase plant consumption, make sure that more of your daily calories are from plant sources. When preparing your dinner plate make sure that the majority is plant based. Try lowering meat consumption to once daily to decrease risk of heart disease. Doctors and cardiologists who emphasize an interest in healing and reversing chronic diseases with plant based diets, suggest that the first word of health advice should be simply, "eat more fruits and vegetables, raw when you can."

Always consult your chiropractor or primary care physician for all your health related advice

Your Body Needs Them!

Are You Getting Enough Fruits and Vegetables? Your Body Needs Them!

No seriously, are you?

Think about it. You may initially think you are. Then you may realize you aren't. The USDA states you need between 2-3 cups of fruits AND vegetables per day, depending on your age and activity level. I personally think we need more than that. Where do you stand? Are you getting the recommended 2-3 cups of produce per day? If not, let's get you there. If you are getting that amount, can you fit in more?
At least half of your plate at every meal should be produce. I also try to get in more than what the USDA recommends because sadly in today's world, conventional produce may not be as healthful as it once was. Our food is genetically modified, sprayed with chemicals, and picked before ready so it can be shipped hundreds of miles away and then "gassed" to ripen just before you purchase it. There is no way possible that a tomato of this caliber can be as nutritious, or even flavorful, as a homegrown, organic tomato that was the norm so many years ago.

So how can you squeeze more in without feeling like you just had Thanksgiving dinner? It's easy!

Smoothies are a wonderful breakfast, even if you eat something else with it (they also make great snacks). Add fresh or frozen fruit to any other smoothie ingredients you would like. You can even add vegetables! Carrots and pumpkin taste wonderful, and spinach and kale, while they may color your smoothie a bright green color, are completely covered up by the fruit you pair it with (pineapple is a great one).

Juice! Juicing is an easy way to get in extra vegetables. Be careful with too much fruit juice, though; although it's natural sugar, it's still a concentrated source of sugar. The best juice would be mostly vegetables with a little fruit for flavor. Apples are wonderful. Make sure when juicing that you use organic produce for at least "The Dirty Dozen", since you will be concentrating your fruits and veggies -http://www.ewg.org/foodnews/summary.php

Add fruit to cereals, salads and desserts. I love to have mixed berries on top of my frozen yogurt. Chopped fruit makes a great addition to many savory dishes as well, such as a mango salsa on salmon or dried fruit in a couscous dish.

Add chopped veggies to almost any dish! Soups, stews, pastas and many other main dishes can all benefit from added vegetables. Try having salad with your dinner; not only will you get in more veggies, the fiber will help to fill you up so you eat less of the other foods. Throw extra toppings on your burger or sandwiches - instead of a thin slice of tomato, some pickles and one iceberg lettuce leaf, try a thick slice of tomato, onion, cucumber, bell pepper and a few leaves of a dark leafy green like romaine or spinach. Dining out? Ask for extra vegetables to be added to any dish.

Snacks are a wonderful way to get in these extra foods - a piece of fresh, ripe juicy fruit is a wonderful break from your day. Cut up raw vegetables are fun to munch - try dipping in plain Greek yogurt seasoned with herbs or in hummus.

As you can see, it's very easy to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your diet. Your body and brain will thank you!

I am a nutritionist, healthy cuisine chef, wellness coach and massage therapist. Despite all this, I continue to have an insatiable thirst for knowledge on all things healthy. This leads me to have a lot of valuable "brain sludge" which I hope to share with you.
http://www.thebalancedcircle.blogspot.com/

Fifty million years ago, our guardian angel, the grass, arrived to our planet - to make life possible, and to prepare the Earth for the human race.
~Edmond Bordeaux Szekely

Einstein laid the groundwork for nearly all natural health care models when he showed the world that everything, including the human body, at its most fundamental level, is vibrating energy that follows natural laws. Health is the result of cooperating with these natural laws of our being, and science supports the premise that there are no nutrients in animal-based foods that are not better obtained by plant-based foods.

The Standard American Diet (or SAD) for most Americans consists of ultra-high level fat content foods with high levels of preservatives. Toxins from red and white meats, water, air and other environmental factors can leave your insides feeling worn and run-down. An average American will eat 4-6 meals/day and have a typical bowl-movement once a day. This leaves anywhere from 5-8 meals of food sitting in your system at any given time.

Natural plant based foods are the Holy Grail. Their chemical and biological composition creates a symphony of sustainability, proper functioning, and internal healing that is in direct contrast to the stresses and illnesses placed on the body by animal based and heavily processed foods.

Dr. Ann Wigmore founded the Hippocrates Institute, developed the Living Foods Lifestyle (raw, plant-based nutrition), and introduced wheatgrass to America over 40 years ago. She did extensive research and found that it was possible to heal the body of serious dis-ease by taking in the proper nutrients and eliminating toxins from the body. Her research showed that live foods and wheatgrass promoted a considerable rate of recovery for many suffering from advanced levels of dis-ease.

Wheatgrass juice has the amazing ability to detoxify the body almost immediately after consumption. When beginning a wheatgrass detox, start slowly, drinking only one ounce of juice per day. As the body begins to eliminate toxins, old drug deposits and poisons, it can be much like experiencing the flu. Headaches, muscle aches, fatigue, nausea, occasional vomiting, dizzy and spaced-out feelings, and nerve symptoms can develop depending on your level of toxicity. These symptoms usually begin to ease up after the first week. After the detox phase, the chlorophyll in the grass juice begins to build and refine the tissues.

Dr. Ann Wigmore's detox protocol is as follows:

~Begin with one ounce of juice per day.
~Drink the juice 1 hour before meals and at least 2 hours after.
~If detox symptoms are not happening, after about a week increase the amount gradually... over a period of weeks.
~The maximum recommended amount is 4 to 6 ounces per day. Most find 2 to 3 ounces to be energizing and detoxifying.
~She also recommends that during the initial two weeks, in order to alleviate detox symptoms, daily enemas and a colonic should be taken once per week. Anytime a live juice or live food regime is initiated, the body becomes strong enough to eliminate toxins at the cell level, and the blood stream and lymphatic system begin to carry them out. The organs of elimination include the bowel, kidneys, lungs, and skin. It is important that the bowels be kept clear with either enemas or colonics. Toxins that sit in the bowel tend to reabsorb into the bloodstream. This is what causes symptoms such as headaches and nausea. Ingesting fiber, such as ground flax seed, is also helpful.
~Drink plenty of water... at least one quart for every fifty pounds of body weight. When toxins are eliminated via the kidneys, skin and other detox problems are less likely to develop.
~Toxins in the body tend to find a way out, and it is best if we keep them moving out through the proper channels. Living food (raw plant-based nutrition) also assists in removing toxins naturally.
~People who are extremely ill and begin wheat grass should do it under the direction of a health practitioner.
~It is also recommended that while going through detox, one should cut down on the amount of animal protein eaten. Try to focus on fruits and vegetables (raw), and fruit and vegetable juices. This allows the body to use all its energy to eliminate rather than using this energy to digest food.
~After a short period of time, many people notice that the juice makes them nauseous. This is a typical reaction and might be the body's signal to slow down a bit or change from wheatgrass to barley grass juice.
~Dr. Wigmore found that after several weeks or months on the juice, the body begins to heal present and past illnesses that have been suppressed.

Dr. Bernard Jensen says that the body heals from top down and from the inside out, and backwards in the order of whatever was wrong last.

Will an Adult Weight Loss Camp Work For You

Sometimes no matter what, those extra pounds won't fall off, and you're constantly having trouble sticking to a diet. You've tried out gym memberships, personal trainers, and even weight loss membership clubs. Still, you can't lose the weight. You're not willing to give up just yet though. Perhaps a weight loss camp can give you the boost you need. They seem to work really well on reality television, could one of them help you?

If everything that happened on television were true, then I would have planted my magic beans by now and be rubbing the golden goose instead of sharing my thoughts with you. Television shows such as NBC's "The Biggest Loser" and VH1's "Celebrity Fit Club" aren't genuine despite the so called reality of the shows. On these programs, you never see what really goes on off camera, and these shows are edited for entertainment and persuasion so that consumers will buy products associated with the television feature. Not one size fits all either. Just because one person loses a ton of weight on a specific diet and exercise plan that does not mean that the results will be the same for other people.

Many people sign up for weight loss retreats only to leave them before they are finished. Sometimes, they despise the menu choices and caloric restrictions and feel the exercise schedule is more dangerous than beneficial.

Others realize that many of the camps are more like spas than fitness centers. At these camps, many programs are optional and guests aren't encouraged to diet and exercise. The emphasis is more on becoming one with you. With fees that can range in the thousands of dollars per week, weight loss camps that don't help people lose weight are nothing more than scams. Imagine how you would feel if you spent that much money and didn't lose any weight at all. In some instances, people have attended weight loss retreats and actually gained weight.

There is no shortage of weight loss camps across the United States. Getting fit is big money, and companies are capitalizing on the rapidly growing number of obese people in the country. Before you sign up for a program, you should checkout the program's website. Ignore the guest testimonials on this website and look for independent reviews elsewhere. A call to the staffing director and a personal tour of the camp may answer any additional questions you may have. Before you begin the program, be sure and consult with your physician. Your goal is to get fit and live a healthy lifestyle, not to injure yourself.

Water Fasting Weight Loss - Good or Bad?

Water fasting is, exactly that! Just water-no solid food, juices, coffee, tea or milk. Are there any benefits to such drastic measures? And does it work?

Well a surgeon may request this just 24 hours before an operation or some other medical procedure, or it may be part of a religious ritual. Maybe some people are happy to just drink pure water for a short length of time thinking this will flush out all the build of toxins in the system and restore a natural balance. Water fasting weight loss can occur over a period of time. If you are considering fasting for long periods it is always wise to consult with your GP first and foremost giving your reasons as to why you want to engage in this other than other forms of dieting.

A one day fast, once a week, once a month appears to be the most common time limit but even then you must prepare yourself for this. A few days before engaging on a water fasting weight loss diet spend a couple of days drinking fruit juices and eating very little so that your body starts to get used to not having solid food. Water is one of the main important elements in your diet, without this it can lead to all sorts of problems with kidney function, circulatory and digestive systems. When you water fast it gives the body an opportunity to cleanse itself. How much water you drink is personal to yourself, but on average drink a large glass full of pure water, with nothing added, every few hours or so depending on your size and how active you are. Any clean water is adequate, filtered tap water and bottled water is fine provided it is just pure water-nothing added. If your urine is pale yellow then you know you have an adequate intake. If you are running to the toilet every few minutes then that is too much, and if your urine is a dark yellow-then you will need to drink more as you will dehydrate.

Water fasting for weight loss can work and will definitely show results but you have to be very strong willed and determined to water fast for many days. It has been claimed that to show any real results then you have to water fast for at least 21 days to a maximum of 40 which, in my book, is a very daunting and drastic measure! However if you have medical problems i.e. heart problems, hyperglycaemia, or see a GP regularly for other complaints then have a consultation and get monitored by a health professional first, and during, this diet. Dizziness and a feeling of weakness are common ailments during water fasting weight loss diet.

There is no doubt that water fasting can help you shed pounds but it also slows down your metabolism, as your body expects solid food, and once you start to slowly introduce food back into your system then your body will hold onto this food storing it as fat and the weight you have lost could be regained. So perhaps the water fasting weight loss diet should be part of a healthier lifestyle, to include a balanced diet with regular exercise, to obtain a good overall feeling of well-being with the added bonus of weight loss.

what is circadian rhythm? are biological rhythms that could explain why some people do throughout the big game and others are asleep before halftime.
what is circadian rhythm is a cycle of about 24 hours in the physiological processes of living beings, including plants, animals, fungi and Mycobacterium. In a strict sense, are endogenous (within an organization) generates However, this internal rhythm affected by external sources such as artificial light, sunrise and time zones. And when the what is circadian rhythm is disrupted, for example, jet lag, sleep patterns and feeding can become unhinged.
All human beings are diurnal, which means they are active during the day. Before sunrise, our what is circadian rhythm begins to prepare for the day, increasing our level of steroids,
increasing the pressure, lowering our melatonin levels and increased body temperature. However, genetic and biochemical differences between people is that this process can start later or earlier for some people than for others.
what is circadian rhythm operate at the molecular level "turn" or "turn off" the expression of proteins that control body functions that make you sleepy or awake. The light is the sign that most influences, turn on or off genes that control the body's internal clock.
same as the biological clocks?
are not the same that the biological clocks but they are linked. Our biological clocks drive our what is circadian rhythm. The biological clocks that control what is circadian rhythm are groups of interacting molecules in cells throughout the body. A master clock in the brain coordinates all body clocks so they are in phase.
The master clock that controls what is circadian rhythm consists of a group of nerve cells in the brain called the ostracism nucleus, or SC. SÃO contains approximately 20,000 nerve cells and is found in the hypothalamus, the brain, just above where they intersect the optic nerves.
This teacher or SC clock, controls the production of melatonin, a hormone that causes sleepiness. Since SÃO is located just above the optic nerves, which transmit information between the eyes and the brain, the SC receives information about incoming light. When there is less light, as night, the SC tells the brain to make more melatonin so you get drowsy.
How do they affect of body function?
are important in determining the sleeping habits of man. what is circadian rhythm can change sleep-wake cycles, hormone release, body temperature and other important body functions.
Circadian rhythms have been associated with various sleep disorders such as insomnia and sleep-wake cycles altered. Abnormal what is circadian rhythm have also been associated with depression, bipolar disorder and seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
Understanding what makes our biological clocks ticking may lead researchers to treatments for sleep disorders, jet lag and other health problems, such as those above. Learn more about the genes responsible for what is circadian rhythm will also enhance our understanding of biological systems and the human body.

What is Flatulence?

what is flatulence

what is flatulence You're probably familiar with flatulence, even if you do not know exactly what it is or where it comes. You can refer to the use of other terms, such as "passing gas" or "fart", but these words does not explain the origin what is flatulence.
So what is it anyway? Very simply, occurs when you spend excess gas, which was generated during digestion in the intestinal tract of the body through the rectum.

Usually, when this happens, many people find it funny, but others become extremely embarrassed by it. It can be particularly uncomfortable and stressful when there is too much or at inappropriate times, such as during what is flatulence a business meeting or a date.
It can also be physically uncomfortable, because excess gas accumulates in the intestine before being deported, which causes swelling and pain in the abdomen. Despite the physical and social consequences that often accompany them, which is not usually indicative of a serious medical condition.

What should be a what is flatulence?

Actually, there are a number of reasons that you may experience. The first time because of the ingestion of small amounts of air when eating, drinking, chewing gum or smoking. Often this swallowed air is released by the throat, and finally becomes a burp. However, if swallowed air makes its way through the digestive system in the intestines, which will continue until it reaches the rectum and can be released as vapor what is flatulence.

what is flatulence The second cause is when the bacteria in the intestines break down carbohydrates that your body does not digest, resulting in what is flatulence an accumulation of intestinal gas. This is often caused by foods that are rich in fiber, starchy foods or foods that contain a special sugar that is not easily digested by our bodies.
Commonly known to cause digestive process as a result of intestinal bacteria foods include broccoli, beans, cabbage, potatoes, onions, corn and wheat. Two additional reasons for the gas created in this way include red wine and dark beer, both of which are known to cause excess gas in some people what is flatulence.

While there are foods that are known to cause gas to many people, that does not mean that these foods always cause in the world. In fact, you may notice the foods you regularly do not seem to affect other people around the same way at all.
This disparity relates generally to the collection of intestinal bacteria that grow in different numbers one person to another. what is flatulence Some people have a balance of bacteria in the digestive system which effectively compensates the gas caused by certain foods, which is removed before it results in a problem what is flatulence.

Which Nuts Are the Best for Your Health?

Oats are probably the most controversial of the grains because in and of themselves they are not considered gluten free. But they can be subject to what is known as cross contamination. This occurs when one grain comes into contact with another. And this can happen from several sources, i.e., rotation of crops, transportation mechanisms, and cooking environments.

Many farmers that farm oats will often include in the rotation, other grains such as wheat, barley, rye and a host of others. It should be noted that the comparison here is with the grains that typically contain gluten because that is where the problem lies. Advanced farming techniques have taught us that rotating crops yields better results but this rotation often happens at a cost, i.e., there are residual gluten sources from the wheat, barley, or rye when it's oats turn to grow.

Many grains are transported by rail and these cars are seldom completely sanitized to remove products that may have been previously transported. This means that if it is oats turn to be transported and any previous transport was for any of those other grains, contamination is very likely.

Recently, Dominoes pizza announced that they made a gluten free pizza. But it was investigated that these pizzas were made on the same surface as a regular pizza. I am not aware if changes have been made since that report occurred but one must always be cognizant of the possibility of cross contamination from cooking environments.

So does all of this talk about contamination mean one should stay away from oats if they are on a special gluten free diet? Care is needed but oats can be consumed. Processes have improved greatly and there are several producers that are getting certified by the Gluten Free Certification Organization as being gluten free. More will follow as the popularity of the diet continues to grow.

In general, if a person has an intolerance to gluten but they do not have celiac disease then they can probably get away with a very tiny amount of it that may have trickled in. Someone with celiac disease however, can tolerate so little gluten that the risk is probably not worth it. This is a big shame too as oats often are a great source of fiber. But remember that beans are an even better source of fiber and beans do not contain gluten.

I am certain that the industry will get better in its handling of oats, probably to the point where someone with celiac disease can eat them without worry. It's not clear yet if we are at that point but I believe it will continue to improve. When you have manufacturers that are committing to the process, more will take the plunge just due to the competitive nature of markets.

Learning about safety of oats on a gluten free diet is just one of many aspects to living a gluten free life. Help With Gluten Free was created to help people that are deciding whether to adopt this diet by giving them the information and resources needed. Sign up here for information on how to get access to these resources.

We have all heard the saying, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away."

Although eating an apple every day is beneficial, what we should really be doing is eating a banana on most days.

There are many reasons why you should eat bananas. We will be looking at a few of the many benefits so that you will understand why you should slip a banana or two into your lunch bag.

What Are The Benefits?

1. First off, bananas are a very good source of energy. They are full of vitamins and minerals that can give you enough energy to do anything! OK, maybe not anything but you can do a lot with the energy you get from a banana.

It is great to get a boost of energy in the middle of the day when you feel like going home to take a nap. It is better to have a banana instead of a caffeinated beverage because they give you energy that lasts longer, feels better and doesn't come with a crash at the end.

2. Bananas are chuck full of potassium. This is one of the best benefits that come from eating a banana. Potassium is great because it promotes top-notch performance. How does it do that? When you eat potassium rich foods, it helps oxygen get delivered to the brain by the circulatory system. When you get more oxygen to your brain, you think clearer. Another added benefit to this is bananas help reduce blood pressure because of how they improve circulatory health.

3. They taste good! This is an awesome benefit, and many peoples favorite. Bananas are sweet, soft and plain out tasty. It can be hard for many to eat healthy at times because many of the foods that benefit your health the most don't exactly agree with your taste buds. Fortunately, bananas are very healthy for you and are great tasting at the same time.

4. Bananas are a quick and easy addition to your lunch. Many of us do not have time in the morning to pack a well thought out lunch that involves preparation. Bananas are great for this because you just have to have the bananas where you can see them, grab one, slip it in your lunch bag, and you are good to go.

5. Your brain becomes empowered. This benefit goes along with potassium. When you eat bananas on a regular basis, it is easier to stay focused and you are able to think harder.

A study was taken where a certain group of students would add bananas to their meals throughout the day. The other group just ate their normal meals without bananas. They concluded, at the end of the study, that the students who ate the bananas became more alert in their classes then the students who didn't.

When it comes to fitness, 80% of your success will come from what you eat and when it comes to your nutritional lifestyle, you want to work smarter, not harder.

Use the tools that you have at your disposal so that you can make eating healthy quick and convenient.

Believe it or not, one of the best tools that you have for losing weight is your freezer. Most people use it to store ice cream and TV dinners but let's take a look at ways we can REDEFINE it's use for our benefit.

Store your leftovers - One of the best ways to make sure that you stay on the fitness track is to cook healthy options in bulk. By doing this, you can make sure that you always have something ready for when you are hungry. Instead of hitting the Taco Bell on your way home, you will know that you have a delicious and healthy dinner waiting for you at home. Try cooking a spinach lasagna, vegetable casserole, or a hearty chicken soup.

Stock up on frozen vegetables and fruit - Frozen vegetables and fruit can be healthier than fresh ones from your local grocery store. Have you noticed how fast your produce goes bad after you buy them? Well, that's because it takes time to get them delivered. "Fresh" produce are picked before they are ripe so they never have the full amount of time to develop nutrients that they would normally contain. Also, en route, they are exposed to a lot of heat and light that degrade these nutrients. Frozen vegetables on the other hand, are picked when they are ripe and are preserved with the freezing process. Don't feel guilty for buying frozen produce!

Buy things that take minutes to prepare. I admit it... I love my blender and I'm not ashamed. One of my favorite things to eat every day is a smoothie/shake. Purchase produce that you can grab from your freezer, put into your blender in the morning, and then have a quick and healthy breakfast. I mix mine with Shakeology for an even healthier meal.

Store your sides. People may not know this, but you can freeze cooked wheat pasta, brown rice, or sweet potatoes. If you decide to cook an entrée for the night, having frozen sides on hand can make your life so much easier.

So there you have it. I bet you didn't know your freezer was such a good friend. By working smarter and not harder, you can stay on the fitness track and get the dream body you have been hoping for.

Food dehydrators are a popular, practical tool in the kitchen with dozens of different benefits. Food dehydrators are primarily used to dehydrate food for storage purposes; they are especially popular among those living in remote areas, who cannot get to grocery stores on a regular basis and may need food stored away for months of harsh weather.

However, they are not only popular among people who live in these remote areas--they are becoming an increasingly common regular kitchen tool for people to use, both for storage and 'cooking' purposes. They can be used to dry out vegetables, meats-even fruits and herbs-so they can be easily stored away for the longer term. They are also used to create foods like beef jerky or dried vegetable chips.

Whatever purpose a homeowner decides for their dehydrator, they should buy a dehydrator which is practical, well-made, functional, and reasonably priced. They should also consider what type of special needs or features they might need. Larger families, hunters, sportsmen, and those with large gardens should look for dehydrators which are capable of handling larger quantities of food, and not attempting to dehydrate a table full of food using a single-purpose dehydrator.

The Excalibur 9-tray stainless steel dehydrator is a high quality, well-made food dehydrator which is an excellent choice for many families which are medium to large, hunters and sportsmen, and those with a larger amount of garden vegetables and herbs that they need to dehydrate.

The Excalibur 9-tray stainless steel dehydrator features a total of nine different stainless steel trays, allowing for a larger quantity of food to be dehydrated at one time. Regular dehydrators typically only feature one or two trays-to illustrate just how useful this larger capacity dehydrator is, imagine this fact: a family which requires the use of the nine dehydrator trays would need to use a regular dehydrator five times just to dehydrate the same amount of food.

The Excalibur 9-tray stainless steel dehydrator isn't just perfect for dehydrating food, either: flowers and herbs can easily be dried and combined to make unique and fragrant home-made potpourri, which makes these practical machines perfect not only for people who need or want to dehydrate food, but those into crafts as well.

The Excalibur 9-tray stainless steel dehydrator features a total of 600 watts of power, a twenty-six hour timer for ease of use, a ten-year of limited warranty, and an adjustable thermostat. It comes with nine stainless steel trays and is approximately 12.5" x 17" x 19" in size.

Years before the low carb craze women interested in fitness used carbohydrates to keep their metabolism high and spike their fat burning hormones. Fast forward to today and you will find most women who are trying to lose weight fear carbs.

Add to that the additional issues of hormonal imbalances that start to show up in women over 40 and you have a recipe for panic. Here is how to avoid the fear tactics and use an intelligent approach to eating carbs without storing them as fat.

As a woman in her forties I can see certain advantages to beginning a weight loss program in this decade of life. For one thing, with age comes wisdom and with that comes the ability to sniff out the worthless crash diet schemes. You know the ones, they usually begin with the words "It's so easy!"

Well, I do think it can be easy, once you develop your new lifestyle, but the road to that goal is not always a walk in the park.

I lost more than forty pounds about 15 years ago and I easily maintain my weight loss now that I am in my forties. In fact, I weigh less now than I did when I graduated high school. I do not say this in any way to brag, I simply want to point out that losing weight and maintaining weight loss after the age of 40 is possible and enjoyable, when you know how to eat your favorite foods the right way.

A nutritional obstacle that many women face is how to eat carbohydrates without storing them as fat. As I mentioned carbohydrates have become a "no-no" for many dieters. However, this is a mistake because carbs are the foods your body relies on for fuel. When your body is not getting them, it puts a brakes on your fat-burning hormones to conserve stored fuel, what you call fat.

Here are 3 steps to eating carbs without fat storage that take into consideration the hormonal changes of women over 40:

1. The two hormones that get a lot of attention for women are estrogen and insulin. After 40 years of age a woman's ovaries slow their production of estrogen. This causes a number of things to shift and one of them is fat storage. Fat is now more likely to accumulate in the belly area.

Insulin is important to weight loss because it is insulin that pushes carbohydrates in the blood (i.e. blood sugar) into storage. What you want is for carbs to be burned up as immediate energy or to be stored in your muscles and liver as a readily available energy source. To do this you need to avoid carbohydrate "spill over." A good way to follow a jump start diet that is low carb for only a couple of days. This depletion of carbs resets your hormone levels so your body is ready to burn fat as its primary fuel source.

2. After a few days you want to work on timing your carbohydrate intake. The best times of the day to eat carbs are early, when your metabolism is naturally spiked. Another opportune time is right before or right after a workout, this allows the body to use the stored carbs in your muscles and your body can then use the carbs you eat to replenish these stores, as opposed to storing them as fat

3. Give yourself a free day one day a week. This is a day when you allow yourself your favorite carbohydrates. Not only is this a psychologically pleasing day, which makes it easier to stick with your diet for the long haul, it also is a day that can reset your number one fat-burning hormone, called leptin.

Leptin's job is to help you avoid starvation. When you eat plenty of carbs leptin levels are high and your body is an efficient fat burner. If you follow a strict diet or low carb diet, leptin levels quickly drop signaling your fat cells to hang on to fat stores.

This hormone got little attention until about 20 years ago when its function in the body was first understood. And, this may explain why you have had so much difficulty with weight loss plateaus in the past.

By learning to manipulate your carbohydrate intake you can enjoy your favorite carbs and avoid fat storage.

So, when you start your diet take a couple of days to reduce carbohydrate intake, then time your carbohydrate intake during the day so your body can use up the carbs. And, give yourself one free day a week to reset the most important fat burning hormone, leptin, so your body can keep burning fat throughout the week.

Women over 40 often look at estrogen and insulin as the hormones to control for weight loss. However, leptin is the hormone that controls most of the weight loss puzzle.

There is an easy way to keep your leptin levels high and increase your body's ability to recognize and use leptin.

And, if you can do this, you essentially keep your body in a fat-burning state 24/7... high leptin levels + high leptin sensitivity = high levels of fat burning.

DESPITE the increasing success of conventional medical therapeutic approaches and continued development and improvement of mechanical revascularisation approaches, a significant number of angina and coronary heart disease patients cannot be managed successfully. Also a substantial proportion of these patients do not achieve complete revascularisation even after successful angioplasty/bypass surgery and continue to experience exertional angina or ischemia despite medication. Apart from these factors, the traditional procedures - bypass surgery (CABG) and angioplasty (PTCA) - are expensive and involve a certain degree of risk in the form of iatrogenic morbidity and mortality.

Besides, unfortunately, treatment to clear blockages often results in cell regrowth that can obstruct vessels again. This condition, called re-stenosis, occurs in about 20 to 30 per cent of PTCA procedures. Repeat procedures are not uncommon and re-stenosis rates after repeat PTCA are as high as 50 per cent. With bypass surgery, repeat procedures are sometimes necessary. Six to 10 per cent of CABG procedures are now re-operations. However, re-operative mortality rates are two to three times of those of the initial procedure and range from 2 to 3 per cent for second operations and up to 15 per cent for third and subsequent operations. Patients undergoing repeat procedures generally have more advanced coronary artery disease rendering the re-vascularisation process less effective.

EECP or Enhanced External Counter Pulsation is a new form of therapy that relieves or eliminates angina by increasing blood flow to the heart. This therapy has been approved worldwide by the health authorities, including the Food and Drug Administration, USA, the NHS, England, and of course, China where it is widely practised.

The patient lies down on a padded treatment table. The calves, thighs and hips are tied with cuffs which inflate in a sequential manner from calves upwards, thus "milking" blood in the reverse direction precisely timed in milliseconds with a sophisticated computer, which increase the blood flow to the heart when it is relaxing and when the blood flow to the coronary arteries is at its peak. The increased blood flow pressure during this phase of the cardiac cycle causes dilatation of the coronary blood vessels, opens and expands the networks of the dormant small blood vessels. These channels can create natural bypasses around the clogged arteries boosting blood supply to the oxygen deprived areas of the heart. The permanent opening of these channels may account for the long lasting benefits of EECP therapy.

Typically, EECP is done as a series of 35 sessions, each lasting one hour. The patient is investigated through standard tests such as treadmill test (TMT), echocardiogram and stress thallium before and after the completion of the sessions to verify the improvement in the status of the patient. It is important to note here that for this treatment, coronary angiogram is not important as with it only the degree of blockage of the main coronary arteries and their branches can be assessed, and it is not suitable for visualising the minute vessels, arterioles and capillaries or for assessing the overall blood flow to a particular region of the heart which is actually more important.

Clinical studies over the past few years have shown that about 90 per cent of the patients treated with a single course of EECP experience a reduction in angina frequency and intensity, and are able to return to a more active lifestyle. The need for anti-anginal medication is reduced or eliminated. The ejection fraction (measure of heart function) shows improvement and so do the TMT and stress thallium scans.

Unlike procedures such as bypass surgery and balloon angioplasty, EECP treatment is administered in outpatient sessions, carries little or no risk and is relatively comfortable and inexpensive.

At present, this treatment is being offered to those patients who have chronic stable angina; who do not receive adequate relief from angina by taking nitrates; who do not qualify as candidates for invasive procedures; who have exhausted invasive treatments without lasting relief of symptoms; who are unwilling to undergo surgery or angioplasty or who want to explore alternatives to bypass surgery or angioplasty. Indeed, it is a viable alternative for those coronary heart disease patients who are not candidates for invasive or surgical interventions by the physician's or their own choice.
