With the earlier versions, Affiliate Theme was already the easiest way for me to set up a new blog for any niche and have it running in matter of minutes with the products and offers showing. How easy it is with this theme doesn’t stop to amaze me. Well, anyway – the new version is out and it has some new functionality in it that I was waiting for after reading the upcoming features from the support forums.

The new version totally changes how the headers of the theme is handled. Earlier, it was either pre-made header graphics, custom header or just text. So getting individual header up there, one had to do it or get someone else to do the custom graphics. Now, with the new version, the header graphics are in the background instead, which means that any custom TEXT can be added on top of them.

So using the pre-made niche related header graphics is now even better as the blog title and tagline can now be added there with ease. Of course, one can still do custom header, but for a quick niche blog, it’s now up in minutes WITH great, eye-catching header..

What else is new with Affiliate Theme version 1.2?

• Improved Theme Settings interface
• Change the page and sidebar width
• Display navigation below or above header
• Open Conversion URLs in new windows
• Add “No follow” to Conversion URL’s
• Choose to float on-page Media Boxes Left or Right
• Improved header display system
• Improved system for handling the “separate blog” functionality

I’m loving the last two improvements. Like I mentioned, it’s so easy to make great looking header now when the header graphics can be used as background and add my own custom text on top of the header.

And of course, like in this blog, I’m running the separate blog in nearly all my niche blogs, so getting the improvement to the handling of that is a great bonus!

Of course, you can jump into the overpopulated niches, where the competition is fierce as there is so much money around. Examples of niches like this are the make money niche, or search engine optimization, SEO niche. You can choose a topic like this and make a killing, but for beginners and for most experts too, it’s a lot more profitable to find those hidden, untapped niches.

Go Where the Money Is

You can go at this two ways:

• finding first where the money is and then check if there is (too much) competition or not, or
• look for niches with little to no competition and then see if there’s any money in there.

Usually it’s easier to find the products you’d like to promote first. You can start by looking at the best seller lists on different sites and the popular products on affiliate networks (e.g. Clickbank, Commission Junction, etc.). Also, look into the popular searches in different search engines to see what people are searching at the moment. And continue on by searching for keywords related to the products you found.

..and the list goes on. All the options are right there in the WordPress dashboard, and they can be edited at any point, for example if you want to test different coloring, update your header graphics, add new tracking code, etc.

After you’ve watched the tutorial videos available in the member section for the Affiliate Theme and done the customization once, you can do customization for your new site in a matter of minutes next time. Of course you have to plan longer than that and think about the coloring and what kind of header graphics to use, but actually turning the plan to reality is almost too simple with this theme. I say too simple, because I hate myself for using all the hours, if not days, for tweaking my old themes by hand before.

If you want or need to, of course you can edit the .php files all you want and make the theme just right for the specific website. I haven’t needed to do this on any of the niche sites I’ve put up, because it works so well just as it is, but it is great that the option is there if you run into a situation where you need to add that something special to your niche site. And looking at the support forum, the UBD crew even offer you tips to do YOUR OWN tweaks if needed to.

Add New Affiliate Products Like Posts to a Blog

You have most probably created a WordPress blog post before, right?

First I researched for keywords about the products I wanted to promote. Then I tapped into the Google Keyword Tool and looked up how many monthly searches those keywords were getting. From the results I picked up the best keywords, the keywords that were getting enough searches to make it worthwhile to drive traffic with. I tried to find targeted phrases, instead of individual keywords. In the end I had a long keyword list that I started working with and I imported the list to an excel sheet with all the data from Google.

The first thing I did with the list, was go through the estimated advertising cost and competition for the keyword. Why? As this tells how many other marketers are competing for those keywords, if the competition is high and average pay-per-click cost is up, the word is most likely profitable. But this brings on the problem: Should I go after the same keywords and phrases as the other marketers and compete for the rankings or ad placements? Or should I try and find keyword phrases that:

• Get enough search engine traffic (more than 1000 searches per month), and
• There is very little or no competition (not too many search results with those keywords)

I usually go for the latter, as it is easy to get FREE search engine traffic by targeting low-competition, high search volume keywords.

So next, I go back to my keyword list, which I still have in the imported worksheet. I then make a search at Google with the phrases and take a note at how many results I get. I do the searches using quotes, so I get the results for the phrase and exact match. Then I copied and pasted the number of results to the keyword worksheet. And depending on the length of the keyword list, this took 10-15 minutes or several hours.

After all this was done, I could evaluate the potential of the keyword phrases by looking at:

• Advertiser Competition
• Average Pay-Per-Click cost
• Average Monthly Searches
• Number of Results from the Search Engine

The best keywords and phrases have more than 1000 monthly searches and 10 thousand or less results for the exact match in Google.

When I had the list of potential keywords, I could start planning what I could do with the words:

• Post an article on Article Marketing site and promote an affiliate product
• Start a Niche Blog and drive traffic with the keywords I found
• Create Squidoo Lens with the keywords and get paid for advertising and product promotions
• etc.

All this was easy, but it took a lot of TIME.

And the list was way from perfect..

How I Learned to Stop Wasting Time and Fell In Love with the Micro Niche Finder

What blew me away, was the Strength Of Competition Indicator (SOC) that is built in the tool, so I don’t have to do the calculations by hand or with excel to get the ratio of the # of Google pages and the # of searches for the keywords. In MNF, I can just click on the SOC button and the tool gives me a number and a colored ball.

• GREEN = Low Strength of Competition.
• RED = Strong Competition. Not Good.
• YELLOW = in between.

With the green marker, it should be relatively easy to rank high in Google…

Hmm, isn’t this what I used several hours for? And this tool does it way better that I managed to do “by hand”.

It is that EASY.

But wait, there is a number next to the green marker, I get to see information that would take ages to dig manually:

• inanchor – the # of web pages with back links containing this term in the anchor text.
• intitle – the # of web pages with the term in the title tag.
• inurl – the # of web pages with the key phrase in the URL.

If a page gets all 3 of these right, there is someone very good at Search Engine Optimization competing on that keyword or phrase.

Knowing this, I can now avoid those words and concentrate on the “easy money”, targeting the key-phrases with 3 low counts.

James doesn’t stop to amaze me as he is updating the software constantly, and it is up to version 4 already.
