My turn - day 140

140 days ago I woke up in my bed in Finland, with a runny nose, headache and a cough....
...a couple hours, lots of packing, last minutes stress purchasing, almost missing the train -later, Sophia, Ruut and I were sitting on a train, almost bursting with energy and happiness - our adventure had finally started, and we had no idea what to expect.

140 days later I wake up in my dorm bed in Singapore, with a headache and a cough, looking over the city from the open dorm window my bed is next to.
140 days later I've experienced, seen, done, learned so much more than I thought I would and been to so many places I never thought I'd be.
140 days later, it's time for me to fly home. It's time for me to write my last blogpost while traveling, from Singapore, just as Sophia and Ruut have before me.

I'm afraid I don't have the time to sum up the trip (impossible) or my feelings about going home (equally impossible) and since the decision was made, and the ticket home bought last night, I haven't really had time to think about it either. So luckily I've been able to enjoy my last day, headed for the beach with Colin (last day of 30 degrees, sunshine, and a warm ocean....) and when it started raining (this is Singapore) I did what what you are supposed to do in Singapore (considering the infinite number of malls) - shopped.

And ate. Singapore now has officially vegan paradise -status.
This means I have no idea that I'm actually going home. Instead I feel excited - the way we always do when leaving a city and heading someplace new.

But this time my destination is Finland. I'm gonna fly (FLY???) via Japan to Finland.
.....hahahhahahahahah. Finlanad???

Back in S'pore

Left Melacca a couple days ago, after celebrating the last night of Chinese New Year and participating in a big Hindu festival the next day (saris, hindu gods, loads of people, jewelery, spears through cheeks and hooks through the backs, smells, sounds, colours...) taking Josh from Melacca (originally Taiwan) with me, and heading, once again, back to Singapore.

After Josh, who knows these things, told me what hostel is the cheapest, I met up with Tom, and since we haven't done much but watched movies, walked around and eaten, eaten and eaten. How did we not spot all this vegan food last we where here??
Now Tom has left for Nepal, and I'm headed out with Colin and his friends...

Sumatra Adventure - hanna masala!

...as they kept repeating in Aceh - no problem.
There is too little and too much to write, so instead I'd like to just upload pictures, but of course I've lost the computer chord... so you'll just have to imagine.

Medan, traffic everywhere, rickshaws, advertisements made out of flowers, dirty, busy, friendly people, curious people, me getting on the right bus is everyone's business, me eating and being comfortable on the 14 hour bus is also everyone's business, and not even my business to pay for.

Banda Aceh, what is this place, 4 in the morning, dark, bus station, the friendliest people ever, no paying here either, tsunami, huge boat 5 km from the water, ferry port, sun goes up over the sea and the sleeping city, moto drivers sipping their kopi aceh, the first call to prayer for the day can be heard all over, curious men.

Pulau Weh, Tom, scary moto ride on the winding roads, Iboih beach, goats everywhere, blocking the path running along the shore, enjoying the view like everyone else, locked up in the bungalow, hammock, endless rain, green vegetation everywhere, colourful fish, nemo fish, constant electricity black outs, walking barefoot around in the jungle, Japanese fort?, surrounded by huge spiders, chased away by mosquitoes, the never ending sound of the waves, the wind, the rain on the roof.

Banda Aceh again, hothothot, all women covered from top to toe, even wearing socks, sitting on the grave yard watching the sun go down over the graves with funny Dutch names, hearing stories about family members dieing in the tsunami, city rebuilt with a modern feel, no sidewalks, hotel room looks and smells like a dungeon, too hot to be anywhere else, no restaurants, cafe after cafe after cafe, kopi aceh, little cakes, My bread and ice cream, AC, savor.

Lampu'uk beach, white, neverending, empty beach, with the random group of cows here and there, palmtrees swaying, neverending days under the unforgiving sun, avocado and tomato salad, death if it weren't for the sea, the breeze and the shade, the sound of the waves and the crickets, and something else, a snoring monkey? rock climbing and bats emerging from the cave at sunset, moto ride through the fields and groups of palmtrees, water is salt, sky is blue, sun is strong, everything is white, white, white

Momong beach, sleeping in too small a tent, dragonflies surrounding us, suddenly gone, swallows surrounding us, fire on the beach, can of mushrooms for dinner, sunset the most beautiful so far, I say that every night, swimming in the warm water under a sky totally starlit, so many stars, so beautiful, too many stars, too beautiful, the moon so bright we don't need any light, no one else on the beach after the last fisherman walks back to Lampu'uk through the forrest, rocks, sand, green vegetation, beach surrounded by hills, let's just lie here and never get up

Banda Aceh, foodstore, internet, ATM, hothothot, friendly people, visiting homes.

Medan, bus station, 14 hour busride later.

Bukit Lawang, ride on the roof of a Lapi lapi (public bus, minivan) through palmtree plantations, walk along the river, live in Rainforest, little rain now and then, hammock facing the river, three days trek, Thomas monkey, Macaks, Orangutangs, wild male, Sandra, Minna, Suma, Jackie, all with babies, 96,4 % same genes as I have, Jackie smart, gets down from the trees and holds me hostage until the guide gives her fruit, a hug from an orangutang, the face inches from mine, her long fingers around my arm and neck, her baby hanging from her hair, indescribable, up and down and up and down, green, green and green, view over more hills covered in green, camp by the river, sleeping under raincover, and boy does it rain, thunder and lightning, right above us, lightning lighting up everything several times a minute, thunder making Tom jump, climbing up a waterfall till Erwin, our guide, thinks we've died, while the others are chased by a bear or a tiger, rafting back in three inner tube tractor wheels, feeling the stares, we weren't alone with the monkeys after all, jungle juice and hippie guides singing and playing guitar.

Medan, busstation, goodbye Tom, for now.

Dumai, 6 a clock in the morning, sun going up, ATM, tickets, motos everywhere, hello miss, hello miss, where am I, where should I go, visiting home and an English school, getting on ferry, friendliest people ever, falling asleep on the deck where they let me sneak up, waking up with a sunburnt face and feeling empty... goodbye Sumatra, I will be back.

...in Melacca that is. Went our separate ways with Tom(for a while), took a bus from Bukit Lawang (via Binjai, via Medan) to Dumai, got there this morning, took the ferry over, and was greeted by familiar faces... Attilo, Steve, Edwin, Rocky, Yalu how could I not stay at least one night?
(Oh, and for the food too, of course. The Food. Or actually just any food, as long as it's not nasi, mie or tempeh goreng with sayuran)
Ruut and Maia are though clearly missing, so I figured to finally take the time, now that I for once have internet, and write about the Sumatran Avdenture that came to it's end today.

Oh, and Ruut - I forgot that 'Malaysia' must meen 'mosquitos' in some language(Sophia, you too know exactly what I mean...), Melacca is still too hot to handle, and everybody's asking after you. And the veg chicken and rice place is closed, as usual.

Sumatra confusion

A blog can only convey so much of 'reality'.
Reality on this trip being something completely different than reality back home, and the blog posts few, written fast, censored and only our perception of things, this travel blog conveys very, very little 'reality'. When you add to that the fact that you, as a reader, than interpret this bad depiction of reality that we try to convey, I think it's pretty clear for everyone that there will be misunderstandings.
The point of this blog has been to keep our folks at home updated on where in Asia we are, and maybe even give them a little insight in what it's like (that's where the bad conveying of reality steps in) as wells as being a great way for us to remember some of the things we've seen and done on this trip.
However, because of bad writing, limited time and space, unclear blog posts and the likes, but most of all because of the simple fact that we've just failed to give you the real picture of how things are, these misunderstandings have led to this blog being more of source of worry for the people back home, than fulfilling its actual purpose: keeping them calm.

So what can I write without making anyone worry?
That Sumatra and Malaysia are filled with some of the kindest people I've ever met? That I trust everyone I meet naively to one hundred percent and trust them with all my belongings? That I say yes to free moto rides and to visiting people's homes, even though we don't understand a word the other says? That I've had interesting conversations with the locals 4 in the morning as the only westerner arriving in a new city?

Or should I write about how I've spent the last days doing nothing but laying in the cabana and watching the rain pour down, thus not giving you anything to worry about?
Or how the minarets call to prayer at the weirdest times and the high palm trees combined with the dark clouds never look as intense on the pictures I take as they do in reality?
Or how I finally did something on this rainy paradise island (that can't compete with Tioman in Malaysia) and swam to another island, snorkeled, and watched a bunch of Clown fish for a long time while my goggles slowly filled with salt water?
Or how wonderful it is when it for once isn't raining and you can lay on the dock at night, listen to the waves, watch the stars and see the whole world(which for the past days have consisted of the cabana, Pulau Weh, and the island infront of Pulau Weh) being lit up by lightning while everything else goes dark because there is yet another black out?
Or how Banda Aceh is the most muslim city in Indonesia, and was totally devastated by the Boxing day Tsunami... proof of this being the huge boat stranded high up on land?
Or how weird and fun it is to have met up with the American we met way back in Yangshuo?
Or how much I miss Ruut and Sophia?

I'm sorry for all the 'or's. And I'm not telling you that you don't have the right to worry. You do. But just not because of misunderstandings, not for things there is no reason to get upset or worried about. Can I blog without you misunderstanding at least some of it? No. Can I depict reality through my blogposts? Doubtful. There is too much, always way too much.
Therefor I've come to the conclusion, that perhaps this blog should have ended when Ruut flew home, 'our' journey was inevitably over by then, and she wrote such a good summary of the way we felt those last days, a blog post that should have been the last.

However, it wasn't the last. And this post is not 'last blogpost' -material. So I might let you know where I am and what's up in the vast island of Sumatra (or who knows where we'll go?) every know and then, but don't expect it to be often, don't expect it to be detailed and please don't expect it to be 'reality'.

Did all of this really happen?

Or was it just an elaborate, yet sweet, dream? I fell through a rabbit hole and found another marvellous world just waiting to be discovered. Sounds so cheesy, but it's how I feel, probably how many first time travellers feel. Not that you could ever get tired of the world.
Like Alice in Wonderland we've been stumbling around, ususally without true knowledge of surrounding ongoings. Tasting this and that, having peculiar converations, seeing unbelievable things and hearing stories beyond our imaginations. I can't really find the right words describe how I feel leaving all of this.

Three/four months is not a long time, but it's long enough to make me wonder if anything's changed back home. Have I changed?
At least I learnt a lot; about hospitality and frendship, patience and composure. Essentially, there's no need to ever lose your temper and things will always work out with a big genuine smile. If you're broke and homeless someone'll always help you and lift your spirits. If you're hungry someone will offer you food, even if you're not hungry somenone will want to share their food with you. Sing, play cards, talk, dance. It could be your fellow travel company or someone you've just met. A smile can take you around the world, I'm certain of that.

All the amazing people I've had the privilege to meet, all the hilarious incidents and all experiences, big and small, will hopefully remain in my memories for a long time to come.
This is not the end, it's just the beginning.

Diverging paths (update from R in Singapore)

Entering this weird city state once more felt strange. Leaving Malysia and all fabulous new friends wasn't easy. I was excpecting to see Hanna or Sophia appear any minute, but they never showed up... My room mates are friendly and helpful, and thus it's not hard to find company. Still, us having been such a tight group, an entity almost, you can't help but feel a little lonely. What a quiet day it's been.

Took the opportunity to do things that might have bored others; a vistit to Singapore Science Centre and book stores. Numerous second hand and high end book stores later I was penniless but in a much better mood. I also discovered several vegetarian restaurants in the area around my guesthouse on Dunlop st. So now I'm on a tight schedule to visit all four of them within 24 hours!

Still planning on catching a Kung Fu movie and checking out China Town to see how the preparations for CNY are going. Another mission is to find some Lei Cha, this really delicious Chinese breakfast food that we've dubbed "Green Soup".

Feels like home, Melaka - Day 106-110

Melaka. When talking to all the guys living in our guest house (Voyager, we recommend) we learned that most of them have been here for years/months and keep coming back again and again.

Why? is the question Ruut and I asked ourselves.
Melaka is the 'historical city of Malaysia'. An important and convenient stop for trading ships, Melaka was a busy town with 84 languages spoken... but then came the Portugese, after them the Dutch and then finally the Brits and thus Melakas glory days as an important seaport was over.
Now Melaka is a popular tourist location, filled with museums and a beautiful 'old town' and Chinatown. Not far away lies modern Melaka, with huge malls and traffic jams. (oh, wait, even the narrow streets of Chinatown are constantly filled with cars.)

Yeah, it's charming, but we wouldn't describe this as 'the perfect place, with all you need. When you've come here you don't need to travel anymore'.

Or so we thought. After spending 4 days in Melaka (that's 3 more than planned) and meeting some of the most wonderful and kind people there are, we just might have changed our minds...

Decided not to fly home just yet, so needed to post home some stuff. A lot of stuff.

Doesn't look that delicious,but this vegetarian version of the local dish 'chicken rice' is something I'm gonna dream about for years to come.

The British left their mark as well, destroyed the fort the Portuguese had built, and painted all the buildings red.

Melaka just might be the warmest place we've been so far, so we tried to escape the heat by visiting as many museums as possible.. and the museums are numerous.

Sorbets, snow ices, ice creams and fresh juices are a necessity... why don't they have fruit shakes though?

Everyone's preparing for the Chinese New Year (3-4 Feb), so even Ruut.

Visited the Hot Springs with Attila, Edwin and Maia in the middle of the night...

..why? It's way to hot during the day, but in my opinion it was way too hot even at 2 am. Basically one just had to splash a little water on oneself now and then, otherwise it hurt. (Kind of like an extremely hot sauna... but with clothes on)

Afterwords you don't take a shower, but yet another bath.

In Atilla's (origianlly from Hungary, lived here for a year now after just a quick dayvisit gone wrong, or right, Maia is from KL, Edwin from Melaka) sweet ride. 'I ran out of money in June!'

Since Attila has lived quite some time as penniless, he knows where to get free food, and woke us up 7.30 for breakfast at a Sikh temple.

You show up, get free (vegan!) food, wash your dish, leave. Not bad.

Ruut posing. In China I was Chinese, in Cambodia I was 'beautiful Khmer women!', in Thailand and Malaysia the locals are so sure I'm half thai/malay they don't even ask me, and take it for granted that I understand the language... Ruut still keeps on getting plenty of attention.

Local dessert, ice, beans and what not, all smashed in to one. Sounds horrible, looks horrible, but is, according to Ruut, 'okay'.

The fact that there are up to three places, that we know of, where you can show up three times a day and be served 100% free, vegan, food, definitely makes me and Ruut love this place yet a little more.

Ruut has discovered a new found ability to fall a sleep... anywhere, anytime.

Waiting for the Voyager Cafe crew to finish counting the money, so we can spend yet another night without sleeping...

...since apparently the Malay never sleep. Either they spend their nights at Hot Springs or then drinking tea at hawker stalls.

Night time is the only time when the temperature is tolerable though.

Or then not, since as said this town is packed with overly friendly people, and at 9 a clock Edwin will pick me up and drive me to the bus station.

At 5:30 tomorrow morning I should arrive in Georgetown, and I see that as the starting point of a very different adventure, no Sophia, no Ruut.
Ruut is still in Singapore till the 25th, and will blog from there.
(Luckily she should not be all alone either, since we've got some amazing friends over there as well...!)
We discussed the blog, after all it's supposed to be about our trip, and our trip basically came to an end when Sophia flew home.
However, I'm still in Asia, and Sophia and Ruut both agree I should keep on blogging, so I will. It's still the same Asia, 'our' Asia.
And maybe there's a bigger chance I'll actually live up to the name of the blog, now that I'm 'alone'... ;)

(Sadly we don't know they're names, trying to ask with the help of charades, and then understanding the answer, isn't so easy. Nor is explaining why you are vegan and a bunch of different things, but that's what made the day so interesting, AND this is what communicating with the Chinese in China was like most of the time, even though they weren't deaf-mute.)

Met our friend from elementary school and junior high, and he was kind enough to give us a tour of the city!

...he also showed us new places to eat, which we of course appreciate a lot.

Later we ran into Azlan and Colin, two guys we'd met a couple days earlier on Tioman, and they showed us Singapore nightlife...

....which isn't much when it's a Sunday night, but we had a great view of Singapore from Mt. Faber.

The street we lived on in Little India. We felt very much at home there, since Little India isn't that different from the rest of Asia (and especially not different from all the other 'Little Indias' in other Asian cities...) while the rest of Singapore was... big, clean and Western.

Colin and Azlan came to wave Sophia goodbye, and drove me and Ruut home, while trying to do anything to cheer us up, before returning to camp.

They didn't manage to cheer us up, but at least we learned a lot of interesting(shocking) things about Singaporean (Asian) culture, for example violence seems to be/have been(we hope!) a crucial part of raising your children...

Returning to Malaysia - Day 106

So, today we managed to do everything we didn't do yesterday... that is check out (after waving goodbye to our Chinese roomies, and drawing a Malaysian flag to let them know where we were going), take a bus to where you can buy tickets to Melaka, actually buy the tickets, and run to the last bus off the day while the guy is still writing the tickets for you... luckily the bus was a bit late, so we made it. (Even though my rinkka has never been this heavy? That probably means my wallet has never been this light...)

Left Singapore, arrived in Malaysia. Again. How strange, the first time we return to a country... the same papers to fill in at the boarder, the same welcoming: Selamat Datang!
However, I'm really happy we did return. I had forgotten how nice the people are, and how colourful they are with all the saris and al-amiras.... and the 'corn in the cup'. Ahh.

After three hours on a luxury bus (the seats were wider than most beds we've slept in, AND gave you massage! Do I need to say more? Freezing though, like all busses) we arrived in the cute town of Melaka. We live in Chinatown (World Heritage town) and the place is packed with veg restaurants... except they were all closed today. Doesn't matter, I like this town, and we might stay a day more before changing countries once again... we'll see.

Don't know why the posts with pictures of Sophia's last days and pics from Tioman have deleted themselves, but will try to upload more pictures tomorrow, if we stay put.

Singapore - Off Track

Hanna and I were planning on being really efficient today. Wake up early to buy the things we needed, get tickets to somewhere and check out by noon. Flee the country essentially.
Well things didn't exactly go according to the elaborate (cough cough) plan. The previous night I had finally befriended our Chinese roomies who turned out to be a really nice couple, despite first aversions. With the help of maps and sign language we discussed about their home cities, geopolitics, the different peoples of China, food, our travels and so forth. It's amazing that just by the virtue of all of us being people we could uphold a somewhat proper conversation, them being deaf and non-English speakers and me being a non-Chinese and sign language speaker (does that sentence make sense?).

Thus today was different. The couple asked us to go out sightseeing with them, "Why not!" we mimed or signed or whatever. So off we went to Sentosa Island, this crazy theme park-like place just a short yet expensive cable car ride from the main island of Singapore. Apparently they had already been there once, but had found it so awesome that they just had to take us there as well, to marvel at all the craziness (read: silliness). Let's just say we've got a lot of holiday pictures China style now. We posed at every freckin' statue, monument and building there was. Communication was a struggle at times, but who cares when you get to meet nice people. The Chinese are always so sincere, a big reason for us loving the country.

And we actually have a plan where to go next. Finally, at 10pm we decided to head for Melaka and from there onwards to Indonesia.

Sophia going home - Day 104

I'm flying home today.
Actually traveling all the way back to Finland in less than 24h! When it took us over three months to make it here. It's surreal. I've tried not to think about tonight's flight before, but I guess I'm going to have to face it now.

I don't really have anything smart to say... I'm too sad and shocked that this trip really is over for me to write an interesting text about my experiences or some sort of summary. All that's going through my mind is all the things that are going to change 'back to normal'. But it doesn't feel normal to me. Normal is living out of a rinkka, always eating out, never knowing where you'll be the next week (the next day!), never knowing in what crazy situations you'll find yourself, having a hard time remembering in what city you slept in four nights ago, meeting new and interesting people all the time without making an effort to find them, wearing flipflops, not having to wear more then t-shirts and shorts whatever time of the day it is. Normal is never having to sleep alone. Normal is feeling like a huge, white and blonde giant. Normal is not understanding what people around you say and not be able to read the road signs. The list goes on and on...

And I haven't even mentioned the biggest change. Not seeing Ruut's and Hanna's faces all day, everyday. Not hearing their voices. Not laugh, talk, worry and eat with them. To wake up and not see their faces, Ruut's usually a bit (understatement) sulky and Hanna's impatient stare at me for being so slow to get ready for breakfast.
To always find something to laugh about... Oh, I can't write all the good stuff about these two. There's too much of it and it makes me too sad.
I'm so used to having them around, whatever mood I'm in or they're in. Always living on top of each other I've learned to be alone with them around. They don't have to leave to give me some alone time. So what will I do now I'm leaving them?!

Now I'm feeling so low I can't write anymore.
I'm going home, I'm going home, I'm going home.
...it still doesn't feel real.
