Question by FullHorizon: What can I use for sliding windows and patio doors which don’t have working locks?
I recently moved into a new place, and the locks on the patio door and windows don’t work. However, there are steel bars provided for all, that I can put between the window and frame of the wall to stop someone from sliding them open from the outside.

The owner, says since the condo is on the third floor of a 3 flat building, and the area is very quiet and residentail, that is sufficient. He also said, the steel bar is more secure than a lock on the window or door.

Would it be too petty for me to request the locks be fixed on all the above? Or what can I buy to lock the sliding windows and patio doors from the inside without the Landlord’s assistance?

I suspect the owner would have to replace the windows ect to fix the locks. I’m not sure. Thanks

Best answer:

Answer by Rich B
A steel bar in the bottom sill of the sliding door should be sufficient.

Question by ABN: Is it better to dry lay or wet lay a flagstone patio?
We currently have a flagstone patio in cement and mortar. Its about 20 years old, and looks horrible. We are debating if we should do a dry lay installation this time or do a wet lay again. If we do a wet lay again, will we have the same issue in another 10-20 years?

Best answer:

Answer by Eggman
I prefer to dry lay them myself, but either should last a long time if the area is prepped properly before you lay the patio.

The area beneath the patio should be excavated to a depth of at least 5″. Compact the subsoil, then lay a separation fabric, then a 4″ layer of compacted gravel, then a 1″ layer of sand, then your paving stones.

I have looked everywhere on the net and cant find what Im lookig for, I want a retangler type table , plastic material. I went to wal-mart and all they have is a smaller round table, I am lookig for the more sturdy plactic patio set. Can anyone help me please??

Best answer:

Answer by Romeo
Here are some rugged plastic picnic tables, but they are not Rubbermaid brand. Must they be Rubbermaid or will you consider other brands? Rubbernaid seems to be very limited on patio furniture.

Question by : What veggie/fruit can I grow in a pot on my patio?
I live in an apartment and my patio is very bare, so I would like to start growing something. I have fertilizer and pots, but am not sure what will grow well on my porch. It is covered, so there is only sun directly on it when it’s at a certain spot in the sky, other than that it’s only lightly shining on it…is there anything that can grow here? I’m taking all suggestions

Best answer:

Answer by Trying to Grow
Probably stuff can grow. Are you Australian? I am!

Anyway, I’m growing lots in pots at the moment. I bought some flower bulbs from Bunnings and they are coming up nicely.

Basil and bok choy start sprouting really fast and are quite easy so I’ve got those growing as well, but I move them in overnight so the possum doesn’t get them. If you don’t have possum problems then you might be able to leave them out overnight.

I’ve also had some luck with nasturtiums in window boxes, going well so far.

Recently I planted a whole lot of other seeds, some of them have started sprouting and some haven’t so I can’t tell you if they will all work but hopefully they will. I’ve planted globe amaranth, carnations, snapdragon and Californian poppies amongst other things. I tend to go by what looks nice on the pictures, then check if they’re suitable for my area and give them a go. I think the ones I planted will work in pots but if not I will transfer them to the ground. Seeds are quite cheap and I actually got some good pots from the Reject Shop for .50 each, Bunnings is pretty cheap too.

Start with say some basil and nasturtium seeds, in a couple of weeks you should have stuff growing like I do. You can see my blog for some pictures, though I haven’t uploaded the most recent ones yet.

I’m not putting any vegetables in pots because I think they’re better off in the ground, you could try tomatoes though as they can grow in pots, you can buy them from seeds or already growing.

Also check what needs full sunlight and what doesn’t, probably unless the area is totally shady it will work, but if a plant does specify full sun (like some of my bulbs do) then they may not work on your patio. But you know how much sun it gets so you’d be a better judge of that.

Hope that helps.

Question by Cool DR: How to build a deck level with my existing cement Patio?
I am going to be building a deck that will be next to my already existing cement patio. My cement slab is not level because for the reason of the rain water washing away from the house. What are my options on how to join the two together? I could go the easy route and just make it all flush, but then my deck wont be level. any ideas? Thanks

Best answer:

Answer by BIG JD
Hire someone to come out and raise the cement slab. They drill holes and pump mud under it to make it level. Add a roof over your patio to prevent rain water from flooding the house.

Question by Big B: What’s any easy homemade way to get rid of all the flies on my patio?
My neighbors dogs’ poo area is right up against their side of the fence and right next to my patio. So now there’s a ton of flies that swarm over. Is there something I can mix up a put in a pie pan to leave out that traps them, like dishwashing soap and vinegar, etc? I heard the vinegar works on gnats. Will this work for the flies too?

Best answer:

Answer by Ana
Fly tape, or a strong fan blowing them off.

Question by puzzled: How much will it cost to have patio stairs, brick or stone, put in.?
I already have a brick paver patio in my backyard. I don’t have stairs going from the sliding glass door to the patio. The dimensions I will need put in are about 2.5 feet high, by 3 feet wide, by about 3-5 feet long, to get what I need. How much will this cost me? I live in a suburb of Chicago

Best answer:

Answer by Cakes
as far as loose cheapest stone, it sounds like 100. usD worth but then u want mortar and time. the way to know for sure is getting estimates. to ask for them online u can try craigslist or yellowpage type directories for finding workers near you:

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=paver+stones+contractor+chicago&ei=utf-8&fr=b1ie7

the contractor may want to come out to see your site. 3-5 estimates is good to get i think.

to find paver stones that exactly match what u already have may up the material cost of course but first you’d be hoping the contractor recognizes the manufacturer or u can find it, like by checking “paver stone types”:

http://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=A0oGkm_oJP9JQm0B2.NXNyoA?p=paver+stone+types&fr=b1ie7&fr2=sb-top

if no luck with those stone finders u might have to take a pic and ask around online like at manufacturer websites or better yet contractor’s forums.
