Traditional Kokeshi

Traditional kokeshi dolls were initially manufactured by Kijiya artisans in the Tohoku region. They were known as "dento" dolls and they had slim and long bodies without arms or legs, and wider rounded heads. Initially, these Japanese dolls took a very simple shape with long cylindrical bodies painted with a limited variety of colors.

Modern Kokeshi

Shingata or creative kokeshi, is a more contemporary doll style which gives flexibility to the artist to shape the doll as he chooses; they can possess any style or color. Also, the body and head can be very diverse in form. Creative kokeshi dolls don't adhere to the traditional styles originated in the Tohoku region; their creation is totally free regarding the artwork. A creative doll is generally a unique piece, and it might be more costly compared to other type of dolls due to its originality. These days we tend to see doll's houses as nothing more than a child's play thing. I am sure that there are many of you out there who can remember playing with doll's houses as a child. Yet the concept of a dolls' house has not always been thus. A couple of hundred years ago, the idea of letting a small child play with a precious dolls' house would have been unspeakable. With this article I aim to give a brief history of the dolls houses and maybe change a few of your rigid perception about dolls' houses.

My interest in dolls' houses was ignited a few months ago when I heard a report on the radio about the people who make them. These were fully grown men speaking with a passion for their pursuit - dolls' houses. Never before had I heard such enthusiasm and zeal, and all for something I had always perceived as nothing more than an outdated child's pastime.

The Beginning

The earliest evidence of dolls' house like memorabilia can be found in Egypt - 5000 year old wooden models of boats, animals and people were found on various archaeological expeditions. Though it is quite likely that their use and purpose was quite different to that of their modern counterparts. It goes to show us that throughout history, people have found a use for or had a fascination with small models of everyday objects. More then a miniature model, these objects represent encapsulations of a real life object; a type of time capsule better than any history book.

Going Big

Although they had been around for a long time before, dolls' houses became big in northern Europe; especially in Germany, Great Britain and the Netherlands. They took the form of large closet style pieces with lots of small rooms adorned with miniature furniture and people. Such a thing would not come cheap of course, only the most noble could boast such a show of opulence. These types of dolls' houses also served to record the layout and decoration of a house. Indeed, on a visit to a stately home in Britain, one often comes across a well kept dolls' house which shows us exactly how people used to live, from the their dress sense to their sense of taste in household furniture.

How to Relocate Your Doll Collection

Moving home is always stressful - if you have a valuable doll collection it is just ten times worse. If you find yourself in the position where you have to move your entire doll collection to a new location there are certain precautionary measures to take that will reduce the chances of damaging your doll collection.

1. Do not let the movers pack your dolls.

Nobody else will take the same care as you when packing your dolls. Movers may be very experienced in packing other items but collectible dolls need extra special care when being moved. If possible do not place your packed dolls with the rest of your move in the removal van. If you have no choice then supervise the packing of the boxes so that boxes are not damaged and heavier dolls are packed under the lighter dolls and not vice versa.

2. Make sure that you use sufficient packaging materials:

You are going to need lots and lots of bubble wrap, tape, packing paper and boxes. Just how much packaging material you will require will be determined by the types of dolls in your doll collection. Porcelain, china and composition dolls will need the most bubble wrap as each of their limbs will need to be wrapped separately. Hair and outfits will be of greater concern with vinyl dolls and newsprint-free packing paper is ideal for this purpose. If you have NRFB (never remove from box) dolls, you need sturdy outer boxes to help keep the doll boxes dent-free. Pack heaviest dolls on the bottom; lighter dolls and doll clothes on top. If you have dolls that you are considering selling - do so before the move. It will save on packaging material and you can always use the money for all the packaging materials you are going to need.

3. Mark the Boxes Well:

Marking the boxes well will not only make for easier unpacking, it will also reduce the chances of someone accidentally throwing your box of porcelain dolls around. When packing the removal vehicle this will assist in ensuring that the heavier dolls are packed underneath the lighter dolls.

4. Beware of Storage Facilities:

Heat, humidity and insects are enemies to most types of dolls. If you must store your dolls for any length of time, make sure our dolls are in a climate-controlled facility and that your insurance policy will cover the dolls whilst in storage.

5. Make Sure the Dolls are properly Insured:

Your homeowner's policy may cover some portions of the insurance for your move. Most do not cover breakage, however, and you will need to purchase breakage insurance from the moving company.

When next you plan to visit a doll auction with the intention of buying a doll/s plan ahead and take sufficient suitable packaging material with you to ensure a safe journey home for your newly found dolls. If you have to travel home by plane it may be a better option to ship your dolls home and avoid the risk of damaging your dolls in transit.

The bobblehead doll is a type of doll with its head (which is often oversized in comparison to its body) connected to its body by a spring, so that tapping the doll will cause the head to wobble. This type of doll is also known as a 'bobbing head doll', 'wobbler', or 'nodder'. These dolls date back to ancient Japan and China, where they were made with flexible bamboo strips instead of springs. Today's dolls are more directly descended from German 'nodders' dating from the late 18th century, which were made from ceramic or bisque, and ranged in height from about 6 to 8 inches. These dolls were popular in America until around 1930, when interest in them started to fade.

Modern bobblehead dolls first appeared in the 1950s, and were initially made of papier-mache, and then from ceramic. Although the ceramic dolls were popular, they were fairly expensive, and were considered mainly collectors' items. In the 1990s, the dolls began to be made from plastic, which greatly reduced their cost, and facilitated the making of many variations of dolls to represent specific cultural figures and other notable people. After 2000, many different variations of the dolls began to appear, and a number of companies started to offer dolls that could be customized to the buyers' specifications. Modern dolls that represent specific individuals closely resemble those individuals, even including such things as headbands, scars, tattoos, and hair styles.

With all the different doll manufacturers there are today, it can sometimes get confusing on what kind of doll is best to buy. Besides having to determine which manufacturer is the best one to go with, you then need to figure out which kind of doll is suited best for the purpose. Do you want a hand crafted doll, Artist doll, play doll, designer doll, licensed doll? It can get confusing.

Which manufacturer you go with is a matter of personal taste. Germany although, is known throughout the world for their quality made dolls. Origins of Waldorf Style Dolls

The typical Waldorf doll is made from sheep's wool and cotton knit fabric. It has a unique inner head which gives form but not detail to the face. The origins of this type of doll come from a strong European tradition of doll making. Germany was the leading doll manufacturer in Europe in the 19th and early 20th century, dominating the doll market at home and abroad. Many dolls and toys were made at home during long winter months with materials that were at hand - wood, sheep's wool and cloth scraps. Individual people, notably Kathe Krusse, then developed these simple toys into commercial enterprises and the products found a ready market amongst the increasingly prosperous countries of Europe and America. However, dolls still continued to be made at home and the simplicity and charm of these formed dolls stuffed with sheep's wool ensured their survival despite the plethora of more sophisticated toys.

In Europe and later America, this type of doll became known as a "Waldorf Doll" and had a strong connection with Steiner education. Communities and Schools, based on Rudolf Steiner's methods were established in many different countries and the tradition of making this particular type of doll continued alongside the education.

Simple toys made from natural material are recognized as being of great importance for the wholesome development of young children. I look at the cost of a hand crafted Waldorf style doll as an INVESTMENT in my child's work, life, education.

So Expensive, Is It Worth It?

A doll which will be a lifelong friend and will be used feed and nourish my child's inner life is an item I feel are very important to our curriculum, to our journey and to the fact that I want to provide my children with the very best.

Quality and not quantity is the key. Many parents cannot justify spending $100 on ONE doll because what it comes down to is that TEN other dolls could be purchased for that price. I would sacrifice dinner and a movie and buy the doll, no second thoughts. Many of us are "trained" to see the child have SO MUCH that items do not all get played with, and then to think to buy a $100 doll which you see as being thrown into the toy bin with the other mountains of toys is completely beyond the point.

The key is that the child only has a few select pieces to play with... and that those are of the finest quality.

25 Years of Doll Collecting

The past 25 years have seen tremendous changes in the collectible doll industry. Until that time, collectors only had antique dolls, or newer children's dolls to add to their collections. As there were relatively few "new collectibles" to purchase, the market on these "played with dolls" and antiques was vibrant and exciting.

There were many doll shows scattered all over the country, and a visit to one would find three types of dolls available, antique dolls, rescued discarded play dolls, and booths featuring doll makers wares. Doll makers were many, with their work ranging from dreadful to stunning.

Flea markets also found doll sellers, usually of the "discarded child doll type", and many collectors searched regularly for collectible dolls. At the time, dolls being grabbed up were from the Chatty Cathy family, Chrissie and Velvet family, Patti Playpal types , Vogue, and of course Barbie.

With the emergence of the "Ashton Drake Gallery" dolls, followed by many mass produced porcelain dolls by many other companies, all offering limited editions, artist renderings and much media advertising, many collectors changed direction and began to purchase these new dolls.

This new collector market was huge for a number of years. People scrambled to complete sets of dolls and to find dolls by certain doll artists. The market on older vinyl "designed for play dolls" softened considerably during this period.

Home based porcelain doll studios, where you could take classes teaching you how to make your own dolls, also became very popular during this time.

A quarter of a century later, many dolls that were so popular, have now come onto the secondary market. Due to the market being so flooded at the time of production, and so many collectors jumping onto the bandwagon, the secondary market is now flooded with these dolls. The value on many has plummeted as a result, particularly Ashton Drake Dolls. Other collectible porcelain dolls that were mass produced are for the most part worth only a fraction of what was paid for them initially. The biggest reason for this is the fact that these dolls are still being produced, the quality has improved a great deal, and the prices have gone down. What reason would anyone have for purchasing an older one!

The market on genuine antique dolls continues to be strong, and investments made seem to be sound. As the years pass, it is harder and harder to find antique dolls unless they are coming directly from another collector's private collection. This keeps the prices high. Unlike modern dolls, there are only so many antiques to go around!

Dolls are believed to have been around since prehistoric times, and may well have been the earliest type of toy used by man. These dolls were certainly made of natural materials such as clay, wood, and fur. Many of them may have been used as children's toys, but it is believed that they were often used to represent a deity, and likely played a key role in religious rituals and ceremonies.

None of these ancient dolls have survived through the ages, but dolls have often been found in Egyptian graves dating back as far as 3000 years. Some of these dolls were made of pottery, but most were made of flat pieces of wood painted with different designs, and with hair made of strings of wooden beads or clay. Dolls have also been found in the graves of Greek and Roman children, some with movable limbs and removable garments.

Later, Europe became a major producer of wooden dolls. Some of these dolls were made from tree stumps, while others were 'peg' dolls, made with simple peg joints and resembling a clothespin. Composition dolls, which were made from mixtures of pulped wood or paper that were molded under pressure, were developed in the 1800s. These dolls were durable and could be mass produced. Dolls with wax heads were also popular in the 17th and 18th centuries. Porcelain and bisque dolls became popular at the beginning of the 19th century.

The French "bebe" dolls were popular in the 1880s. Up until this time, most dolls represented adult figures. The bebes were different, because they represented younger girls. Celluloid was developed in the 1860s and was used in the manufacture of dolls until the 1950s. Although these dolls could be mass produced very cheaply, they were extremely flammable, and would fade in bright light.

Hard plastic dolls were made in the 1940s, and dolls of vinyl, rubber, and foam rubber were made in the 1950s and 1960s. The use of vinyl allowed doll makers to insert hair into the head, rather than having to paint the hair on, or to use wigs.

Modern dolls have traditionally been toys for children, and 'action figures' representing 'superheroes' are now very popular with boys. There are even 'virtual' dolls available on the Internet which can be designed, dressed up, and played with on web sites. Most dolls are now manufactured using modern materials and mass production techniques. However, dolls are also now collected by adults, and some manufacturers use the same kinds of materials that were used in the past, to create 'vintage-style' collectible dolls.
