little girls or vampish sirens. There are almost as many kind of dolls as there are collectors, so whether you find yourself lingering amongst the pink boxes of the Toys 'R' Us doll department or gazing at the magazine photos of lifelike Ashton-Drake baby dolls, if you're reading this article you're probably thinking you'd like to start a doll collection.

Where to start?

First of all, collecting dolls can be an expensive hobby, so be sure you know where your "dolly dollars" are going to come from. Many doll collectors support their hobby by sewing, knitting, or crocheting doll clothes to sell, either on ebay, a Website, or at craft fairs. Dolls can be like potato chips -- it's impossible to just have one -- so be aware of your budget and space restrictions. You might not want dolls taking over your home!

Second, think about what kind of dolls you're attracted to. Some collectors are eclectic and like to own many different types of dolls. Others prefer to specialize in one main type, such as baby dolls or fashion dolls, while still other choose to concentrate on one brand or line. So while one collector may own several Barbies, a Ginny, a Madame Alexander doll, a few antique porcelain dolls, and a reborn baby doll, another may own Barbies, Genes, Kitty Colliers, and even a few Bratz, and yet another collector may choose to own only Sasha dolls. In short, no two doll collectors -- or collections -- are alike, and each doll collection is a unique expression of its owner's tastes.

If you're not familiar with all the different types and lines of dolls out there, the best thing to do is a lot of research. The Internet has really revolutionized doll collecting and is a seemingly endless source of information on the hobby. Many brick-and-mortar doll shops are also online, but many shops are Internet-only. Read, read, read -- pore over the doll magazines and thumb through collectors guidebooks. Look at lots of photos and read lots of descriptions to see what interests you. It's important, if you can, to attend a doll show or visit a doll shop to see dolls in person -- seeing dolls "in the flesh" is very different from seeing them in photos, and you may find yourself surprised to be pulled toward a doll at a show that you hadn't looked at twice online.

A doll show will expose you to a wide variety of dolls. You'll see, of course, the popular vinyl fashion dolls like Robert Tonner's Kitty Collier, Tyler Wentworth, and Betsy McCall, but you'll also see vintage Barbie and Ken dolls, as well as dolls by the venerable older companies like Effanbee and Madame Alexander. You'll see antique French and German dolls, play dolls, American Girl dolls, Bleuette, and even paper dolls. Take it all in -- this is your education.

Once you're ready to start purchasing dolls, the doll show and the brick-and-mortar doll shop are great places to begin, but the Internet has taken hold as a wonderful resource for doll collectors. Browse eBay for deals, but depending upon the dolls you want to own, you may want to gravitate toward online shops. Building a relationship with a doll dealer can work well for a collector, as once the dealer gets to know you and your collecting interests, she can let you know when something comes in that she knows you want.

If you've done your homework, you'll have a sense of what to pay for your dolls. New dolls' prices are often fixed, and it can be hard to get a bargain, but if you're buying dolls on eBay or elsewhere on the secondary market, you may be able to get some good deals.

It's exciting to bring your first doll home, and you may find that you want to share the fun with other collectors. Look for doll clubs in your area -- the United Federation of Doll Clubs http://www.ufdc.org can help steer you toward a local club. Also check Yahoo Groups http://groups.yahoo.com to see if there is a doll collecting group that appeals to you. These online discussion groups can be excellent sources of information and friendship.

As a doll collector, you can learn about fashion, history, and culture, but above all, you should just have fun!

Florence Bassett is a writer and doll collector, specializing mainly in Sasha dolls, Heidi Ott dolls, and Bleuette reproduction dolls.

Kokeshi Dolls: A Toy or a Japanese Tradition?

At first sight, kokeshi dolls may seem like simple toys or decorations for your living room, but in fact they are an essential art form in Japan. These dolls are generally characterized by their lack of legs and arms (some modern designs have simplified arms), along with their colored kimono with floral patterns and geometric shapes.

These Japanese dolls usually symbolize young girls and they rapidly became well-known for their representation of feminine beauty. These Japanese dolls are usually female, although male versions are currently becoming more common. These wonderfully manufactured dolls are viewed as tokens of good wishes and love.

The History Behind Kokeshi dolls

In the early nineteenth century within the northern villages of the Tohoku region, kokeshi dolls were manufactured as toys for children, and they were produced from remaining bits of discarded wood. These early Japanese dolls were created by craftsmen who made their living by making other forms of woodcraft, but at some point they began creating kokeshi dolls to be marketed as souvenirs. There were many local hot spring resorts in the area, so it was a good business to sell these dolls to the visitors; it is a Japanese tradition to take back home an omiyage (a gift that is brought back home when a person travels). Over the years, this art has been enhanced and a wide variety of technical and artistic variations appeared. Today, there are many schools of kokeshi designs guided by master craftsmen who pass their legacy to other family members, maintaining this tradition throughout the generations.

Kokeshi Doll Types

Regardless of their common characteristics, kokeshi dolls are separated into two standard types: traditional kokeshi and creative kokeshi

Traditional Kokeshi

Traditional kokeshi dolls were initially manufactured by Kijiya artisans in the Tohoku region. They were known as "dento" dolls and they had slim and long bodies without arms or legs, and wider rounded heads. Initially, these Japanese dolls took a very simple shape with long cylindrical bodies painted with a limited variety of colors.

Modern Kokeshi

Shingata or creative kokeshi, is a more contemporary doll style which gives flexibility to the artist to shape the doll as he chooses; they can possess any style or color. Also, the body and head can be very diverse in form. Creative kokeshi dolls don't adhere to the traditional styles originated in the Tohoku region; their creation is totally free regarding the artwork. A creative doll is generally a unique piece, and it might be more costly compared to other type of dolls due to its originality. The craftsmen who produce the creative kokeshi dolls are not from a particular region of Japan, and typically they are located in the cities.

These dolls have been an important part of the Japanese traditions and nowadays they are an icon of Japanese culture. The beauty behind these dolls lies in their ever changing design that reflects the current Japanese society. Simple and stylish, these dolls are not just toys or decorations; they are an expression of dedication and love to an art form that has been present for hundreds of years in Japan.

Kenichi loves Japanese dolls. Many parents enjoy buying their child an Asian doll to show the different sort of races in the world or they are Asian themselves and want their doll to resemble them. An Asian doll is a doll that depicts Asian features such as the black hair and beautiful almond shaped eyes. There is a variety of Asian dolls you can choose from when adding them to a collection. Here is a guide on what to expect when you shop for yours.

Asian dolls can be made out of many different types of material. One of the most common type is the porcelain Asian doll. This type of doll generally has a porcelain face, hands and feet. It usually has on clothes that have an Asian flare and the hair of the doll can be either painted on or soft hair like material. Porcelain Asian dolls are usually given to those who collect dolls and are not played with too much or too roughly.

For smaller girls you can opt for an doll that is made out of cloth. These are similar to the timeless style of the "rag" doll. The whole body and head is made out of soft cloth materials with special costumes that you can take off if they need washing. This type of Asian doll is great because they are friendly looking, colorful dolls that your child can really play with. They also clean up well and can last for many years. Your child will love snuggling up to their own cloth for their doll.

Another type of Asian doll that is popular is one that is made out of plastic. These vary in size with some looking like fashion dolls or larger sizes that look likes small toddlers or babies. These can be made completely out of plastic or just feature a plastic head, arms and legs and have a cloth body. This type of Asian doll is also good for children. Many of them have long hair your child will enjoy styling. Some also come with different outfits your child can change the doll in and out of.

With so many different varieties of Asian dolls there are to choose from it is no wonder why they are becoming a popular addition to anyone's doll collection and why more and more little girls are asking for them!

Frank Catamon is an expert on writing about Asian dolls and everything around it. He loves how Asian dolls are made and their Eastern appearance. He has a big Asian doll collection at his home.

A Brief History of Dolls' Houses

These days we tend to see doll's houses as nothing more than a child's play thing. I am sure that there are many of you out there who can remember playing with doll's houses as a child. Yet the concept of a dolls' house has not always been thus. A couple of hundred years ago, the idea of letting a small child play with a precious dolls' house would have been unspeakable. With this article I aim to give a brief history of the dolls houses and maybe change a few of your rigid perception about dolls' houses.

My interest in dolls' houses was ignited a few months ago when I heard a report on the radio about the people who make them. These were fully grown men speaking with a passion for their pursuit - dolls' houses. Never before had I heard such enthusiasm and zeal, and all for something I had always perceived as nothing more than an outdated child's pastime.

The Beginning

The earliest evidence of dolls' house like memorabilia can be found in Egypt - 5000 year old wooden models of boats, animals and people were found on various archaeological expeditions. Though it is quite likely that their use and purpose was quite different to that of their modern counterparts. It goes to show us that throughout history, people have found a use for or had a fascination with small models of everyday objects. More then a miniature model, these objects represent encapsulations of a real life object; a type of time capsule better than any history book.

Going Big

Although they had been around for a long time before, dolls' houses became big in northern Europe; especially in Germany, Great Britain and the Netherlands. They took the form of large closet style pieces with lots of small rooms adorned with miniature furniture and people. Such a thing would not come cheap of course, only the most noble could boast such a show of opulence. These types of dolls' houses also served to record the layout and decoration of a house. Indeed, on a visit to a stately home in Britain, one often comes across a well kept dolls' house which shows us exactly how people used to live, from the their dress sense to their sense of taste in household furniture.

A Child's Play Thing

With the start of the industrial revolution in Britain, came an exponential increase in the manufacture of goods. Suddenly, dolls' houses and dolls' house accessories could be produced in massive numbers and at a fraction of the price. No longer were dolls' houses the play things of the rich and famous, suddenly the market had opened up to millions more people. Cheaper prices made them viable toys for children. While it is fair to say that dolls' houses enjoyed large popularity in Victorian times, they are still massive today. Not only do they appeal to children however, both children and adults alike find please in building and furnishing homes on a miniature scale.

Getting Started

Nowadays it is possible to create a doll's house on budget. The biggest expense is the actual house which when bought in effect is just an empty shell. These come in all different shapes and sizes; from modern to Victorian dolls' houses. If feeling more adventurous, one can make the house from scratch. The next expense comes from furnishing the house; buying tables, sofas, wardrobes etc. It does not all have to be bought at once however, let it be a hobby that lasts a year, two years or even a life time. A dolls' house can give hours of creative fun for the whole family.

Richard Merry

Victorian Dolls' Houses

I am a computer studies graduate now studying Spanish and Italian. If you find yourself in the position where you have to move your entire doll collection to a new location there are certain precautionary measures to take that will reduce the chances of damaging your doll collection.

1. Do not let the movers pack your dolls.

Nobody else will take the same care as you when packing your dolls. Movers may be very experienced in packing other items but collectible dolls need extra special care when being moved. If possible do not place your packed dolls with the rest of your move in the removal van. If you have no choice then supervise the packing of the boxes so that boxes are not damaged and heavier dolls are packed under the lighter dolls and not vice versa.

2. Make sure that you use sufficient packaging materials:

You are going to need lots and lots of bubble wrap, tape, packing paper and boxes. Just how much packaging material you will require will be determined by the types of dolls in your doll collection. Porcelain, china and composition dolls will need the most bubble wrap as each of their limbs will need to be wrapped separately. Hair and outfits will be of greater concern with vinyl dolls and newsprint-free packing paper is ideal for this purpose. If you have NRFB (never remove from box) dolls, you need sturdy outer boxes to help keep the doll boxes dent-free. Pack heaviest dolls on the bottom; lighter dolls and doll clothes on top. If you have dolls that you are considering selling - do so before the move. It will save on packaging material and you can always use the money for all the packaging materials you are going to need.

3. Mark the Boxes Well:

Marking the boxes well will not only make for easier unpacking, it will also reduce the chances of someone accidentally throwing your box of porcelain dolls around. When packing the removal vehicle this will assist in ensuring that the heavier dolls are packed underneath the lighter dolls.

4. Beware of Storage Facilities:

Heat, humidity and insects are enemies to most types of dolls. If you must store your dolls for any length of time, make sure our dolls are in a climate-controlled facility and that your insurance policy will cover the dolls whilst in storage.

5. Make Sure the Dolls are properly Insured:

Your homeowner's policy may cover some portions of the insurance for your move. Most do not cover breakage, however, and you will need to purchase breakage insurance from the moving company.

Doll shows and auctions

When next you plan to visit a doll auction with the intention of buying a doll/s plan ahead and take sufficient suitable packaging material with you to ensure a safe journey home for your newly found dolls. If you have to travel home by plane it may be a better option to ship your dolls home and avoid the risk of damaging your dolls in transit.

Happy doll collecting.

Laura du Toit

For more important tips on doll storage visit: http://hubpages.com/hub/Storing-Doll-Collections

Read more about insuring your doll collection at: buyashtondrakedolls.com/doll-collecting-advice/insuring-your-doll-collection

Hidden Beauty of Handmade Dolls of the Russian Kind

Dolls symbolize the beautiful artworks which are designed in a unique way to provide an appealing aspect. There are several types of dolls available in the market nowadays that are very attractive and fascinating. Dolls are manufactured in two ways namely handmade dolls and machine made dolls. Most of the machine-made dolls have the same design with slight modifications, but the handmade ones are unique. Moreover, traditional method is followed in the manufacturing handmade dolls which provides additional vigor to the handmade dolls. Machine made ones are expensive and would not last longer. The beauty of them mainly relies on the style of painting because the art of coloring brings out the hidden beauty of the dolls. Painting in the machine made ones would fade within a short span of time. If the painting fades, then the beauty of it would not be revealed. So, handmade dolls would be a better choice because it worth's more than the money you invest in buying it.

A few important benefits of handmade dolls are listed below:

Unique
Long lasting
Less expensive
Collectible

Nowadays, we can find different types of handmade dolls in the markets, which are unique, stylish and attractive. They portray the culture of a community. Nesting dolls are one of the popular handmade dolls, in which traditional methods are used for its production. Usually one block of wood is used for the construction of these and the type of wood varies according to different artists and manufacturing requirements. However, there are some common types of wood such as balsa, birch or aspen are used. During the production of nesting dolls, at first the smallest doll is crafted and then the others are created according to the shape of the smallest doll. Most often, the smallest doll is represented as a baby, while the outermost doll is represented as a woman. The beautiful artworks are done by experienced artists. After painting, protective coating is provided to retain the color of the paintings for a longer period.

Russian nesting dolls which are also known as Matryoshka dolls are traditionally manufactured in sets. A set consists of five dolls, but now several dozens are manufactured as well. There is an increasing demand for them in today's market because of its unique design and style. These are not just a decorative product, but can also be used as a gift. Due to the never ending demand for these dolls, most artist design dolls that depict famous personalities. Russian dolls most often use common themes such as peasant girls in traditional dress, animal collections and flowers. In the recent times, artists have duly incorporated newer ideas into the designs of these immaculate-looking handmade dolls which say a million messages in its creative portrayal. So, get ready to explore the hidden beauty of the handmade dolls.

Russian nesting dolls portray the Russian culture in a beautiful way. These types of dolls have been around since the late 1700s and continue to be popular today. Though they have changed quite a bit since then in some ways and are constantly evolving, they are essentially made the same as they were centuries ago.

What attracts most people to porcelain dolls is the fact they look so realistic. Many of the ones that you will find are masterfully handcrafted and look almost just like real people. While most of them are modeled after children, you will also be able to find those that are modeled after adults. Either way, dolls made of porcelain are a timeless art that has remained strong year after year and century after century.

What is most interesting about porcelain dolls is the quality that most of them are made in. While it is possible to find cheaper ones, the more elaborate dolls will cost you hundreds of dollars. This is because they are handcrafted to look exactly a way that the creator meant them to, which makes them special to both person crafted them as well as the people who purchased them. The ones that are less expensive will be less detailed and can be found at your standard department stores, but the ones that are painstakingly crafted and look as realistic as possible must be bought from specialty stores or from the people who make themselves.

Because of the amount of care that goes into making them and their distinct look, there are thousands of collectors of these types of dolls all across the world. These collectors will go to any extent to get the dolls, and then they will take as much care of them as possible. This is great, considering the amount of love that goes into each doll that is made. What's more, is that this is an art. Creating each doll to look exactly one way or another takes time and dedication, and each artist that makes dolls made of porcelain puts their heart and soul into them.

You can even find enthusiast groups of these types of dolls. These groups get together and share their experiences on finding getting their dolls, as well as even show them to other group members. This is a great way to see the craftsmanship of other doll makers as well as just to see the other types of dolls that are being made. You may be surprised of the styles that some people come up with, as many of them are not traditional, but even the most nontraditional porcelain dolls are unique and special just the same.

Are you interested in these kinds of dolls? This type of doll is also known as a 'bobbing head doll', 'wobbler', or 'nodder'. These dolls date back to ancient Japan and China, where they were made with flexible bamboo strips instead of springs. Today's dolls are more directly descended from German 'nodders' dating from the late 18th century, which were made from ceramic or bisque, and ranged in height from about 6 to 8 inches. These dolls were popular in America until around 1930, when interest in them started to fade.

Modern bobblehead dolls first appeared in the 1950s, and were initially made of papier-mache, and then from ceramic. Although the ceramic dolls were popular, they were fairly expensive, and were considered mainly collectors' items. Eventually, however, manufacturers started making the dolls from plastic, allowing for a cheaper manufacturing process, which made the dolls more affordable.

Early dolls were made to resemble animals and popular cultural characters, and were often used as advertising icons and automobile accessories (one very popular such doll was that of the dashboard 'hula girl'). Around 1960 Japanese-made papier-mache 'baseball' bobbleheads began to be imported into America. These early pieces were generic figures representing teams and their mascots, rather than individual players. Typically, the dolls for all teams would look the same, except that they would be wearing the uniform for the particular team being depicted. During this time there were a few dolls made up to represent some of the more famous players of the day, but they differed from their respective team dolls only by the uniforms they wore. Unfortunately, few of these papier-mache dolls have survived without some sort of damage (usually cracking or chipping), although those that have survived in good condition are now valuable collectors' items.

In the 1970s, bobbleheads were made of ceramic materials, and became popular for other sports, as well as for popular cultural and cartoon characters. However, by the mid-1970s, interest in the dolls had again died out, and very few new dolls were made for nearly two decades, when they became popular again.

In the 1990s, the dolls began to be made from plastic, which greatly reduced their cost, and facilitated the making of many variations of dolls to represent specific cultural figures and other notable people. After 2000, many different variations of the dolls began to appear, and a number of companies started to offer dolls that could be customized to the buyers' specifications. Modern dolls that represent specific individuals closely resemble those individuals, even including such things as headbands, scars, tattoos, and hair styles.

The greater diversity of the dolls, and their decreased cost, have, once again, made them a very popular item, and have rekindled interest in collecting them. Today bobblehead dolls have become an integral part of our culture. They have truly become one of the world's most recognizable cultural icons.

GalaxyOfStores is an Online Shopping Center for THOUSANDS of different products for the whole family. It is now so much easier to do business with the help of improved mobile phone coverage and faster internet connections.

The location of a company is not as critical as it was a few years ago. Many companies work from home, unlike pay for commercial buildings in the Centre of the city. Via the internet, companies are able to sell products worldwide.

However, despite the improvements in technology, many home based businesses remain small and focus primarily on the provision of products or services on their local market.

Here are 7 ways people are earning money from home. These companies usually locals would deliver, but potential can be adjusted to a broader market.

1. ensure that fly fishing

Some sport fishermen work create a home business colorful fish fly. These flies can be sold on local fishing and tackle shops, sports shops, or via mail order advertising in hunting and fishing magazines. I have the fly selling in boxes of 6 or 12. Selling on the internet would be a good option for this kind of homemade products, because the fly fishing would be easy to email to almost any location.

2. earthworm farming

Earthworms form an essential part of every successful garden. I have such a business supplying earthworms organic and garden companies and private individuals. There are many good books on earthworm agriculture available at local bookstores and libraries.

3. Home Delivery Service

Everyone is getting busier and busier and we do not always have the time to do the shopping, go to the library, or buy a special birthday gift or Christmas gift. Home based with a delivery service is a busy job for many people. Customers pay for someone to do their shopping, get their children from school, take their cat to the vet, or check out their house every day they are on vacation.

4. Custom designed shower curtains

I know of someone who simply purchase plastic or nylon shower curtains and then paints them with bright colors in contemporary designs. She takes individual orders and keeps a specific range to side. A new shower curtain is great for rejuvenation of a tired old bathroom.

5. pet food Delivery Service

Many pet owners treat their pets as they their children. They enjoy giving fresh meaty treats their pets. One idea is to have a pet food delivery service by starting the purchase of large quantities of meat from a reputable butcher, and selling meal size portions to busy households. You should avoid breaking all laws conform to regulations regarding food production etc.

6. homemade dolls houses

Those who like woodwork, could do what some others do, making a variety of wooden doll houses for clients. Designs can be simple and straightforward. Custom orders can also be taken of customers who need something a little different.

7. Car window etching

Some home based businesses are specialised in glass etching. Anyone interested in doing so could visit their local car-shop to see the range of the car window etching sets. The registration number of a car can be etched on the windshield, and on each panel of glass for safety identification and as a deterrent to thieves.

In short, there are thousands of different ideas for starting a business. Some are based around technology, but there are still plenty of opportunities to deliver the local population with more traditional products and services.

Noel has a friend with a new man jewelry website with useful information about the Man Cross chain and selecting a Man Titanium Rings. Besides having to determine which manufacturer is the best one to go with, you then need to figure out which kind of doll is suited best for the purpose. Do you want a hand crafted doll, Artist doll, play doll, designer doll, licensed doll? It can get confusing.

Which manufacturer you go with is a matter of personal taste. Germany although, is known throughout the world for their quality made dolls. There have been many countries that have tried to follow but have never been able to match. To this day, Germany is still the leader in quality doll production.

No matter which manufacturer you decide to go with, there are still other considerations. The following is a list of the different types of dolls most manufacturers produce today.

Artist Dolls:

These dolls are specialty dolls often designed to look very much like a real child or person and are among the most expensive. Most often, they are produced in limited editions making it more affordable for the merchants and customers to buy. Newly made original Artist dolls can cost up to and over $5,000. That's a hefty price to pay for most doll collectors. Once the dolls are sold out, the mold is broken and the dolls are not made again. This is another reason for the high price tag.

The artists that make these dolls usually have contracts with specific manufacturers. For example, Hildegard Guenzel is a well known artist that produces dolls for Goetz.

Artist dolls are not the type of doll you would want to buy for child's play. These sorts of dolls are bought mostly by doll collectors between the ages of 30 - 45 and average in price of around $600 give or take a few hundred.

Variation Dolls:

These dolls can also be made by artists as well as the companies that manufacturer them. A variation doll is a doll that stays in production usually for a few years or longer. From year to year certain features of the doll may change. It may be something as simple as a different outfit, or the hair style or face shape may change a bit in the following year. Schildkroet is a good example of this. They carry a classic collection line of dolls which pretty much stays the same year after year. Each year you may see slight variations in the same dolls.

Variation dolls are not as expensive as Artist dolls. They can start as low as $40 on up to $500 or more.

Classic Collection Dolls:

Classic dolls are usually replicas of older dolls dating back to the late 1800's to early 1900's. I have even seen some replicas from earlier dates. They usually come in limited editions and average in prices from $100 - $500 depending on the manufacturer. These types of dolls are usually bought by people that remember having a doll of this sort as a child. These dolls should sit on a shelf for display only.

Hand Crafted Dolls:

These dolls can be manufactured by the companies themselves or sometimes you will even find these dolls designed by artists. Some can come with certificates and others wont. It can vary. These dolls can be played with and are usually a higher quality than the simple "play doll" varieties. Facial features may be more realistic and the materials are designed with play in mind, meaning you will find many of the soft bodied and bath babies in this category. These dolls are mostly bought for older children. Hand Crafted dolls are also sought after by collectors..

Licensed Dolls:

These dolls are dolls that the manufacturer has licensing rights to sell or produce. For example, Goetz manufacturers a "Harry Potter" doll under a special licensing agreement. Engel-Puppen has a special licensing agreement with Goebel to produce the Hummel dolls. These dolls can vary from expensive limited editions to play dolls.

Play Dolls:

Play dolls are made especially for children. They are designed to be dragged around by an arm, left lying on the floor for you to trip over, squeezed to death, spanked and thrown in a toy box.

There are hundreds of variations of play dolls. Some designed for a little less play in mind to the ones that couldn't break if a bulldozer ran over it. Manufacturers of play dolls are always careful to make sure the dolls are made of non-toxic materials and flame retardant clothing. Most of these dolls are made especially soft for children's play and includes the bath babies as well. Many of them are very easy to clean just by putting them in a tied pillow case and into the washing machine.

In closing, the doll you decide to purchase most likely will be one that just strikes you, no matter who made the doll. Most often, this is how dolls are purchased. You see a doll in the window that either reminds you of your childhood, or one that has a striking resemblance to a loved one. Many times, this is all it takes, and before you know it, you have the doll in your hands.

Evelyn Whitaker writes articles for Deutsches Haus http://www.deutscheshaus.cc which specializes in imported German gifts, souvenirs and collectibles from Germany.

Baby Dolls For Yourself Or For Gifts

For many, there is nothing more precious than to hold your baby daughter or son for the first time. The special relationship between a child and his/her doll is dynamic, and often mysterious, as all relationships are. It is about love and nurturing, friendship and ownership, the emergence of self. Making a simple handcrafted doll for a child is a gift for life that encourages the magic of creative play. Dolls, like people, are individuals and no two are exactly alike.

A hand-crafted doll is one of a kind, an individual which carries the spirit of the maker in its stitches and absorbs the spirit of the child who loves it. It is a beautiful thing to craft a doll with your own hands, sew it together with love, then make a gift to your child with the words "I made this for you!". In an age of consumerism, children often grow up thinking that things magically come from stores. They miss out on the process of something being made, of watching it develop out of nothing more than scraps of fabric and tiny stitches, inspiration and hard work.

What a gift we give to our children when we involve them in the making of things, even if their involvement is no more than that of curious onlooker. Not only do they see where something "came from", but they can gain a sense of security in the knowledge that something can be made, that indeed they themselves can make it...

Origins of Waldorf Style Dolls

The typical Waldorf doll is made from sheep's wool and cotton knit fabric. It has a unique inner head which gives form but not detail to the face. The origins of this type of doll come from a strong European tradition of doll making. Germany was the leading doll manufacturer in Europe in the 19th and early 20th century, dominating the doll market at home and abroad. Many dolls and toys were made at home during long winter months with materials that were at hand - wood, sheep's wool and cloth scraps. Individual people, notably Kathe Krusse, then developed these simple toys into commercial enterprises and the products found a ready market amongst the increasingly prosperous countries of Europe and America. However, dolls still continued to be made at home and the simplicity and charm of these formed dolls stuffed with sheep's wool ensured their survival despite the plethora of more sophisticated toys.

In Europe and later America, this type of doll became known as a "Waldorf Doll" and had a strong connection with Steiner education. Communities and Schools, based on Rudolf Steiner's methods were established in many different countries and the tradition of making this particular type of doll continued alongside the education.

Simple toys made from natural material are recognized as being of great importance for the wholesome development of young children. I look at the cost of a hand crafted Waldorf style doll as an INVESTMENT in my child's work, life, education.

So Expensive, Is It Worth It?

A doll which will be a lifelong friend and will be used feed and nourish my child's inner life is an item I feel are very important to our curriculum, to our journey and to the fact that I want to provide my children with the very best.

Quality and not quantity is the key. Many parents cannot justify spending $100 on ONE doll because what it comes down to is that TEN other dolls could be purchased for that price. I would sacrifice dinner and a movie and buy the doll, no second thoughts. Many of us are "trained" to see the child have SO MUCH that items do not all get played with, and then to think to buy a $100 doll which you see as being thrown into the toy bin with the other mountains of toys is completely beyond the point.

The key is that the child only has a few select pieces to play with... and that those are of the finest quality.

Truly a radical pioneer in parenting and a mover and shaker in life, Author and Speaker, Kytka Hilmar-Jezek is also known as the founder of Waldorf Homeschoolers, The Original Site on Homeschooling Since 1996. Until that time, collectors only had antique dolls, or newer children's dolls to add to their collections. As there were relatively few "new collectibles" to purchase, the market on these "played with dolls" and antiques was vibrant and exciting.

There were many doll shows scattered all over the country, and a visit to one would find three types of dolls available, antique dolls, rescued discarded play dolls, and booths featuring doll makers wares. Doll makers were many, with their work ranging from dreadful to stunning.

Flea markets also found doll sellers, usually of the "discarded child doll type", and many collectors searched regularly for collectible dolls. At the time, dolls being grabbed up were from the Chatty Cathy family, Chrissie and Velvet family, Patti Playpal types , Vogue, and of course Barbie.

With the emergence of the "Ashton Drake Gallery" dolls, followed by many mass produced porcelain dolls by many other companies, all offering limited editions, artist renderings and much media advertising, many collectors changed direction and began to purchase these new dolls.

This new collector market was huge for a number of years. People scrambled to complete sets of dolls and to find dolls by certain doll artists. The market on older vinyl "designed for play dolls" softened considerably during this period.

Home based porcelain doll studios, where you could take classes teaching you how to make your own dolls, also became very popular during this time.

A quarter of a century later, many dolls that were so popular, have now come onto the secondary market. Due to the market being so flooded at the time of production, and so many collectors jumping onto the bandwagon, the secondary market is now flooded with these dolls. The value on many has plummeted as a result, particularly Ashton Drake Dolls. Other collectible porcelain dolls that were mass produced are for the most part worth only a fraction of what was paid for them initially. The biggest reason for this is the fact that these dolls are still being produced, the quality has improved a great deal, and the prices have gone down. What reason would anyone have for purchasing an older one!

The market on genuine antique dolls continues to be strong, and investments made seem to be sound. As the years pass, it is harder and harder to find antique dolls unless they are coming directly from another collector's private collection. This keeps the prices high. Unlike modern dolls, there are only so many antiques to go around!

For more useful information on creating your own wooden doll house, visit http://www.eloradollhouse.com You will also find a wonderful array of miniature dolls, furniture and accessories on this website as well. Collectors enjoy forming collections of dolls from the past that are rare and even from more the modern day era.

Many collectors start building collections of dolls as way of reminiscing into their childhood. Collectors need to figure out what type of dolls they want to add to their collections, which may greatly depend on the type of material they are made from. Once the collector has decided on the type of doll they want to collect then they may want to purchase merchandise for their dolls as well to add to their collections. However, most collectors do prefer the more modern and vintage style dolls or the classic and antique dolls. There are a variety of dolls for any collector to base their collections upon, with each containing distinct features that are sure to please any collector.

Some collectors collect dolls based upon limited editions and by the individual who actually designed the doll such as Jan McLean, Susi Emer, Beatrice Paccini, Diddy Jacobson, Joke Grobben, or Hildegard Gunzel to name only a few. Collectors can locate dolls designed by these individuals and many more at specialty shops, flea markets, antique stores, and on-line. In fact, there are plenty on-line sites that specialize in collectible dolls and even have exclusive items that may not be available at other sites. Some of these on-line sites are extremely informative and can assist collectors in gather more facts about the dolls they are collecting and related items to these dolls.

The history of the doll can actually be dated back to the beginning of man and they were traditional created as toys for children and were made out of many materials both hard and soft. During earlier days dolls were originally made from rock, mud, clay, wood, or bone, but now during more modern days dolls are usually constructed from plastic, rubber, cloth, paper, porcelain, or a combination of materials. Children often feel that their dolls are cherished possessions and are usually made to resemble a girl or boy, but some dolls are create to resemble fairies, angels or animals. One type of popular animal doll that has been given human-like characteristics is the teddy bear, which often have clothes and even hair.

Collectors find that the most realistic looking dolls are often times the most popular with any collector, especially if these dolls look like babies or children. Most realistic looking dolls are produced of plastic and vinyl, with vinyl being used mostly toady because it is so durable. Some of the best dolls created are handmade and are often constructed of high quality materials, such as the rag dolls. Collectors collect paper dolls that were first produced in France back in the 18th century and moved to other areas of the world. For several years paper dolls were hand painted versions of popular actors or actresses from different parts of the world.

Due to the large amount of grading that was needed in the doll market the Collectible Doll Authority or the CDA was formed, which some collectors feel has only brought problems and frustrations to collectors. Dealers and collectors were using their own standard to judge dolls by with their own definitions until the formation of the Collectible Doll Authority came into play.

Victor Epand is an expert consultant about rare coins, stamp collections, and rare collectibles. Among other types of porcelain dolls or other handmade dolls, miniatures are among the top dolls made. Why is this? Because it requires more pain-staking work and more patience and skill to handcraft a doll or any other hand-made item on a smaller scale.

When one sees something in miniature, it usually brings a smile to their face and a slight sense of awe. Whether that smile is because something is beautiful or because of one being in awe, the smile is genuine, and gives the artist or hand-crafter a sense of pride in his or her work. Whether or not the item you've made is purchased or not, seeing someone enjoy something you've made is the true joy in being an artist or hand-crafter.

Miniature porcelain dolls can range anywhere from low-grade materials, mass-produced items which sit in dollar stores or on retail shelves, or they can be delicately hand-made, each piece fitting just perfectly, each color or tint to eyes, lips or skin done "just so" and painted by hand. The more of the parts of the doll that are hand-made or hand-crafted and the more of the dolls accessories that are hand-crafted, the higher quality the doll is.

They can range anywhere from inexpensive (anywhere from $1.00 to $25.00 is considered inexpensive when purchasing these types of dolls) to expensive, ranging anywhere from $30.00 on up to even $1000.00, it simply depends on the quality of the doll and the materials used to make the doll, how much time one has spend hand-crafting the doll, and how difficult to find the materials or how expensive they are to get.

Miniature porcelain dolls have become extremely popular gifts to young girls, teenagers, and even your favorite elderly aunt or acquaintance. The simplest reason for this is, no matter how old or young, most women never out-grow the joy they found in dolls from childhood. While the standard sized doll is beautiful and equally appreciated, miniatures are often the best reminder of the joys and innocence of childhood.

These dolls are also often clothed in regional costume and sold as tourist gifts in gift shops and souvenir shops in popular tourist locations throughout the world. The reason for this is, they're small, usually light-weight, and travel fairly easily or shipped fairly easily and inexpensively. What better way to give a memento of a special trip or something to bring back to your loved ones after you've traveled for business or pleasure?

No matter the reasons for buying, crafting or collecting miniature porcelain dolls, one fact remains- they are truly a joy to see, one of the most popular and enjoyable collectible items out there, and they bring simple joy to anyone who looks at them.

Lucy Bushman is an accomplished niche website developer and author.

To learn more about miniature porcelain dolls [http://dollcollectingtoday.info/the-beauty-of-miniature-porcelain-dolls], please visit Doll Collecting Today [http://dollcollectingtoday.info] for current articles and discussions.

Dolls - Toys From Antiquity

Dolls are believed to have been around since prehistoric times, and may well have been the earliest type of toy used by man. These dolls were certainly made of natural materials such as clay, wood, and fur. Many of them may have been used as children's toys, but it is believed that they were often used to represent a deity, and likely played a key role in religious rituals and ceremonies.

None of these ancient dolls have survived through the ages, but dolls have often been found in Egyptian graves dating back as far as 3000 years. Some of these dolls were made of pottery, but most were made of flat pieces of wood painted with different designs, and with hair made of strings of wooden beads or clay. Dolls have also been found in the graves of Greek and Roman children, some with movable limbs and removable garments.

Later, Europe became a major producer of wooden dolls. Some of these dolls were made from tree stumps, while others were 'peg' dolls, made with simple peg joints and resembling a clothespin. Composition dolls, which were made from mixtures of pulped wood or paper that were molded under pressure, were developed in the 1800s. These dolls were durable and could be mass produced. Dolls with wax heads were also popular in the 17th and 18th centuries. Porcelain and bisque dolls became popular at the beginning of the 19th century.

The French "bebe" dolls were popular in the 1880s. Up until this time, most dolls represented adult figures. The bebes were different, because they represented younger girls. In the 1900s, realistic German bisque dolls were introduced and became very popular. These started an ongoing trend of creating realistic dolls.

Rag and cloth dolls have been hand made for centuries. 'Rag' dolls are made of any fabric, while dolls made specifically of linen or cotton are considered to be 'cloth' dolls. Commercial production of rag dolls was started in the 1850s in England and America.

It was not until after the Civil War that doll making became an important industry in the United States. Most dolls were produced in New England, and were made of various materials such as papier-mache, leather, cloth, and rubber. Celluloid was developed in the 1860s and was used in the manufacture of dolls until the 1950s. Although these dolls could be mass produced very cheaply, they were extremely flammable, and would fade in bright light.

Hard plastic dolls were made in the 1940s, and dolls of vinyl, rubber, and foam rubber were made in the 1950s and 1960s. The use of vinyl allowed doll makers to insert hair into the head, rather than having to paint the hair on, or to use wigs.

Modern dolls have traditionally been toys for children, and 'action figures' representing 'superheroes' are now very popular with boys. There are even 'virtual' dolls available on the Internet which can be designed, dressed up, and played with on web sites. Most dolls are now manufactured using modern materials and mass production techniques. However, dolls are also now collected by adults, and some manufacturers use the same kinds of materials that were used in the past, to create 'vintage-style' collectible dolls. But whatever the type of doll, they all trace their roots back to prehistoric times. They are truly 'toys from antiquity.'

GalaxyOfStores is an Online Shopping Center for THOUSANDS of different products for the whole family.
