Creating business cards for your art business, is a no brainer and artists have been using deals like the one offered at Vistaprint for 250 Premium Business Cards for $10. Shipping Included for years. Or at least you should have been! Dont worry, its still an option if you need it.

But a single business card isnt the best way for an artist to promote themselves. Im sure you have a great graphic (although, Artist Business Cards are surprisingly usually quite dry in my experience) and if you can talk up a client or buyer it does the job just like it would for any other business.

But your still going to be limited to a single image, many artists present many skills and styles. In some scenarios it would be convenient to be able to show off one of your portrait pieces, in hopes of grabbing a gig, or perhaps you want to show off that album cover art, ore really ideally , wouldnt it be cool to just be able to carry little facsimiles of ALL your works with your contact and site info, right on the card. With a traditional card that could be quite expensive.

Thats what makes Moo cards my new promo tool and suggestion for any artists or webmasters out there. In a single package of cards you can get as many different designs as you like. You can upload as many images as cards you are printing. The price isnt quite as cheap as the standard Vistaprint deal but its quite comparable and it beats making little ATC's yourself.

They also carry some off format options, the ones pictured above are their mini cards. About half the width of a standard card. Great for having a unique card but can also be used to create tags for crafts or to put into your etsy packages.

The Basic cards run a little under $20 for each 50 cards you get in standard size. Mini-cards run about half price for $20 for each 100 double sided cards. Keep in mind that these are double sided cards and Moo cards does only heavy gloss stock or a green option. So, prices are right in line with any premium card option except you get the awesome option of carrying mini versions of ALL your work right in your pocket.

Look over their options here at Moo Cards

I ordered two sets for my sample of the product. In the first combo, I made three copies each of ten of my favorite personal paintings. I made ten featuring my company logo and for the additional ten I had fun and used photoshop to make collages of my artworks and play with textures and colors.

The other set was really fun for me, it was a first in one portion of my business. I run tons of websites. Sometimes, I would like to interview people or offer advertising opps to people offline. I was able to make unique cards for almost all of my websites! I used the image side for the url, logo and a pithy slogan and the backside had my master generic info. With a little creativity, Im sure you can come up with dozens of reasons to make moo cards.

You may also be excited by their sticker pack options, but Ill showcase those in a future post after my order comes in.
Make Money With Your Art Designing Softies

I came across a really fun craft idea on Pinterest today.
The image showed a child's drawing converted into a fun stuffed animal or more accurately a "softie"
You can see it below.

Source: childsown.wordpress.com via Joshua on Pinterest

The caption stated that, if you send a kids drawing to this sites service, they would (for a fee) send you an original child's toy created from the drawing.

Since, I am always on the lookout for methods to make money from my art or ideas to share on this site and related projects, I went in for further examination.

The other "softies" were amazing! These things don't compare to grandma's sock monkeys, she has a real talent for soft sculpture and making 2d images appear in the real. I'm reminded of Joan Miro's transition from 2d work to full scale theater.

That is awesome right! If you are unfamiliar with Miro, here is

Figure at Night Guided by the Phosphorescent Tracks of Snails 1940

I would really give this Artist who makes these softies the credit for being great in soft sculpture and knowledge of materials. I wouldn't call these "children's toys"

But, not surprisingly when I was reviewing her site, I saw this notice:

My site has gone viral; people say that I’m on Pinterest; people are
blogging about me. But now I don’t know how long people will have to
wait before I get to their order. The 4-6 week turnaround time has just
gone out the window.
So, here’s an idea. Let’s keep Child’s Own Studio a secret for a
while? Don’t share this website with your friends, pin me on
Pinterest, post about me on facebook or blog about me. Yes,
shhhhhhh….until I catch up.

Now, that's got to be a great feeling, to be so overwhelmed with commissions that she has to post that notice!

So, although, I am "blogging" about her Art, I am also reposting her "dont share me" post, so I hope they cancel each other out.

So as this site is mostly about how to market your art and how to utilize your creativity to earn money, I dug in deeper ...

If you click the link below, you can see just how popular this site has been on Pinterest.

http://pinterest.com/source/childsown.wordpress.com/

People really love these, rightfully so, as this Artist is very skilled at it, but are you capable of something similar? I expect many think they are and few actually are, but the market appears to be quite open.

She sells these in the range of $70-150 USD and has more demand than she can handle, maybe you want to join up with her , utilize her great presence or buzz, or maybe be inspired to start your own variation on the concept?

Personally, I think she is far underpricing her Art!

So how about, can you think of your own variations on this concept? Brainstorm in the comments below!

Other ways to turn 2d Art Into Physical Art Object For Sale:

Such imitation of superficial effects has nothing to do with art, which is and always has been the making of mental concepts. Even the scientist is interested in effects only as a phenomena from which to deduce order in life." ... "'Looks like' is not the test of a good painting. It indicates merely visual similarity and shows that the artist has not put his brain to work. " *

I agree with John Sloan’s quote. I’ve seen two random objects placed next to each other and that would simply be referred to as “art”. I however, would not call it art because it’s so easy to take any, already made objects, place them next to one another on a platform of some sort and stick a label, saying art right, above it. There is no premeditated thought or emotion in that.
I can, effortlessly walk over to my fridge, pick out a cucumber and an apple; place them in a box, label it art, and try to sell it to any idiot that would buy it.
To me art is something that represents something to the artist who created it, something that carries out an emotion, something that viewers can either relate to or walk off with a thought embedded with what they’ve just viewed.

Have you always been an artist, as a girl were you drawn to the act of creation?
Yes, I always had an infatuation with creation of any sort. To create something from nothing or to take something and turn it into something else, made me feel almost godly.

What are your earliest memories of art?

My earliest memory of art is a drawing of myself in a yellow raincoat, rain boots, and an umbrella; standing under fluffy baby blue clouds with a chalk white outlining, and with the full sun shinning above me.

Ironically, I held my umbrella open above me as it rained heavily. I drew so many drops of rain coming down from above something that wouldn’t be considered as rain clouds. Everything in the drawing played as a background while the raindrops, falling from above the clouds and through, played the foreground.

What have been some positive influences in your development as an artist?

Some positive influences (that at first played as negatives) were the lack of support I had from my family when it came to art, teachers not considering my work as art, and hiding my artistic side from close friends.
Growing up, all these things played as downbeats to my life, but somehow turned into tremendous upbeats when it came to me creating something so amazing that had others and myself in awe.
I hid my artistic side so well, since I was worried about what people would think of my work and because I didn’t accept the words “art” or “artist” when it came to referring to my work or self.
When I hit my parents with the thought of wanted to go to art school, they didn’t take me seriously. When I asked for art supplies, they said no. And that wasn’t because they were trying to be unsupportive, but because they have never seen any of the work I had hidden in my room and lockers at school.
When teachers would pick through my talent and say they didn’t necessarily consider it as art because of all the surfacing flaws they saw in it; flaws that I purposely put in there, drove me towards creating more work similar to what they disapproved of.
Finally, an art teacher came along who thought my work was magnificent and that’s when I felt comfortable with sharing my art with family and friends, who thought it was so awesome that some of them hired me to create flyers, comics, and a bunch of other stuff for money.
Money that I could buy art supplies with : D

Do you have a favorite artist, or school of art?

My favorite artist is Caspar David Friedrich. His work entrenches a sense of tranquility at the pit of my stomach, which gradually carries out through the rest of my body. I doubt I can ever paint like him, but I see nature the way he did.
Like his famous painting, “Two Men Contemplating the Moon,” I can stare into that painting all day and feel as I’m apart of it; standing next to those two men and contemplating the moon with them. I feel as if I’m one with Caspar’s work.

However, the mediums I use; I taught myself through mistakes and emotions.

Is an artist born or made - or both?

I think an artist is born and then learns to evolve and expand thru experiences and the environments they’re placed in.
Any and everyone can be an artist, but not everyone is blessed with the mind and eye of an artists. The education system doesn’t really do much, other than teaching one a new skill. A talent is not taught or bought, art is a seed rooted in the artist’s mind from growth.

i.e. Do you find reference and inspiration from pop culture, philosophy, the human body, wonderful vistas etc.

I find myself fascinated by other artist’s works, but surprisingly hardly ever inspired. I’m inspired by my own childhood, the way other humans react to one another and their surroundings, and the texture of random objects.

Yes, of course it has. But that is what love does. I simply love what I do. I love to have emotions and thoughts pour out of me and turn into something that can be looked at and touched.
A few quibbles here and there threw me off my passion for art, but it always grew and remained great that I effortlessly seeped back towards creating more art. My passion has definitely detracted me from wanting to have a regular social life; I’d rather stay in my house all day and do something I love than to go out and kill time with people, while the cabinets in my mind overflow with files of arty ideas.

If someone asks you "what do you do", how do you respond?

These are all separate ideas that when brought together in my mind they seem to birth one another. With these ideas, a series of visual objects will play the background in a video clip featuring myself; poetically speaking about the judicial system of Canada.

Lets just say, my life can be viewed as a 3D cartoon movie.
From the moment I wake up, to the moment I brush my teeth, to the moment I tie my laces, to the moment I step out of my house, to the moment I come back home, and to the moment I go back to sleep.
Everything that carries out between those habitual activities, are beyond surreal to me sometimes.
A good example would be the other day, when I decided to head to a concert by one of my favorite rappers, Nasir Jones.
It was a rainy day, so I woke up feeling happy (I love it when it rains). I started off my day with a Canadian remix to one of his tracks, “Dead Presidents.” Then I started getting ready to drop off a few resumes at some retail stores before heading to the concert.
I stepped out my house, opened up my transparent umbrella (it was one of those umbrellas that hugged from your mid-waist up), and I’m walking over to the bus stop, slush gush slush gush were the sounds my rain boots made as I stride over to the bus shelter, then boom, my umbrella folds on me.
I thought, ‘okay I might’ve not opened it all the way, let’s try again.’
So I try opening it again, then I see one of the metal pieces that were once attached to the main bar, fall off and poke out a centimeter away from the ferrule and break thru the plastic. I didn’t think that one bar would have effect on the entire umbrella, but that was the end of it.
I didn’t want to throw it, but out of frustration; I dashed it towards a fence in the corner of the narrow short cut I was walking through. That was the last of my umbrella (RIP beloved umbrella that hugged and covered me from mid-waist up, as I looked thru you and laughed to myself while I watched everyone else get wet).

I made it to the mall, semi wet; bought a new zebra patterned umbrella with a wooden handle (extremely pretty btw). I was late for the concert, but I got to watch him perform two and a half songs (not my favorite ones, but I appreciated being in the presence of Nas).
Before getting into the concert, I got stuck in a building next to where the actual concert was being held at; I could hear the bass bumping, music blasting, and the crowd going nuts. I fiend to be in there, but the elevator I took up only went up and one would have to use a key to ride it back down. I shouted from inside that empty building, hoping someone would come to my rescue before Nas left the building.
Sadly, no one heard me, so I had to climb up a gate with a huge lock on it, squeezing through the opening edge at the top, while trying to keep my balance as I climbed down from the other side of that fence, leading down the stairs. I had to climb up and down three gates between three sets of stairs (who would lock a gate at the end of stairs? I mean, really who does that? Who even places a gate in the middle of stairs, isn’t that supposed to be a fire exit?).

Before entering the concert, I had to place my brand new umbrella in a pile with other umbrellas because apparently it could have been used as a “weapon” or got the floor wet, which would’ve been hazardous. Hearing the end of one my favorite songs, “One Mic,” I decided not to argue with the security guard and placed my umbrella in a corner away from the rest of the pile. Just to come back and find my umbrella gone. I was livid, mainly because I had to walk back home in the rain and this was an umbrella I just bought (mind you it cost $35+tax).

I’m not a violent person, but if I found the person who stole my umbrella, I would probably beat them with it. Only because I went through so much in just a few hours; my favorite umbrella broke, I got wet, I got stuck in a building, had to climb grimy metal bars, just to listen to two and half songs!

This is just a simple hardship that could reflect the rest of my days. Leaving me with, going back home thinking of creating something new that could possibly relate to the situation I overcame and helping me forget about those simple things that make my blood boil a tad bit.

However, seventy five percent of the times I find myself liking pervious artist’s work more than something I’ve seen in the present or my own work. And that’s just because I like comparing styles with works from history or my own.

I wish I had little mini mes’ running around doing all the little things I despise doing. It’s not even because I’m being fussy, but because it takes away from time that I could be creating something magnificent. Sometimes I wish I had a personal photographer, videographer, promoter, PR, assistant, chef, paint brush cleaner, and more. We, artists tend to forget about our well being, as we give our all to our art. I sometimes forget to eat or even lose track of meals. So it’d be nice to have someone taking care of all the little things.

What is the goal of art!

It’s easy for me to speak my mind, but difficult for me to express emotions the ways I see people around me do. I found art as an expression form in my own personal way, without forcing myself to leave my comfort zone just to be viewed as ordinary. My goal is to free my creative mind.

What are your goals as an artist?

My goal as an artist is to leave a permanent stamp on this planet. It’s a personal documentation for generations to come, sort of like a time capsule of my thoughts, as I reflect how I view my environment.
Art is a powerful thing; for me to take part in something larger than anything I’ve seen or myself assures me I’m doing the right thing. This magical process can be uplifting and forever lasting, so I’ve made it my goal to reach far into the future with my art, if I’m none existent years to come.
My mind can never go blank even if I forced it to, that’s probably why I’ve never experienced visual writers block. However, I have experienced the legit type of writers block for two months and not being able to write felt like the worst thing ever, but I got over it by painting.
I want any and everyone at any and every minute, viewing some type of art I created; from drawings to paintings, books to films, CDs to videos. I’d like to achieve changing people’s lives with different forms of art.
It depends on how the third party approaches the situation from the get go.

A friendship could possibly develop after a collaboration of some sort. Nothing major for now, but in due time I’ll be looking for some fellow artists to hire for several positions.
White.
I love the song ‘All Falls Down’ by Kanye West. That’s one song I’ll never get tired of, since I feel it portrays my right now story through two different aspects. My inspiration is everyday experiences and encounters with nature.
I enjoy writing my own quotes and embedding them into photos’ I’ve taken and uploaded to my laptop. The Internet allows my art to expand and reach people I wouldn’t be able to physically reach. It helps me backtrack and refer back to things my memory span couldn’t soak up; it helps me find direction to places I wouldn’t know how to get to without the Internet.
Some of first modern artists of the age were impressionists Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet and Paul Gauguin. Romantics, Realists and Impressionists were the pioneers of this adventurous new way of looking at things, drawing inspiration from a vast and varied range of sources such as Japanese printmaking.

The time of experimentation has developed into a blossoming and diverse industry today. Modern art is prevalent, with thousands of artists approaching modern art in extremely diverse and unique ways. Andy Warhol is one of the most famous modern artists of the twentieth century, becoming a leading figure in the art movement known as pop art.

There are artists alive today, still pushing the boundaries and producing art that is both adventurous and popular with people who perhaps aren't even particularly enthusiastic about art.
Such artists include the likes of Doug Hyde and Alexander Millar. Both of these artists create works which depict a character, featured frequently throughout their works. This forms a bond to the entire series of works; when they are viewed together, you gain more of an understanding and feeling for the characters and the atmosphere behind each of the works.

Alexander Millar's artwork rarely shows the faces of the subjects, but rather their ambling figures with hunched shoulders. In words, this might sound rather cold and detached, but this is where the skill of the artist comes in to its own - these works have so much warmth and depth. There is a wealth of personality from each of Alexander Millar's pieces.
Similarly, Doug Hyde artwork stirs fondness within the viewer of his paintings for the subjects within them. Many of Doug Hyde's paintings feature the subject almost entirely filling the canvas in a bold scene, full of rich colours. They are always so happy, that the feeling of joy you see in the painting rubs off on the viewer with great ease.

A fondness and attachment to the artworks forms, and this is so key to why these modern artists are so successful - people are so drawn into the body of works that owning just one is rarely enough. These artworks are like collectables, and this is the way modern artists are changing the entire landscape of the art world. In order to stand out from the crowd, artists increasingly must create something that can instantly draw the attention of an audience, eliciting a response of great warmth and a need to have more than 'just one'.

The Enid Hutt Gallery is a Scottish Art Gallery selling art by hundreds of contemporary artists. This includes canvas prints, wall decor and sculptures by modern artists.

Moving Woes

Moving Woes
This guest post from Walter Horn
I was really worried when my husband’s job decided to move us to Kissimmee. Even though we have lived in South Florida our whole lives, moving to central Florida seemed so far away from our families. We have four kids and I knew it would be hard to do everything on my own since I am used to having help from my parents and my in-laws. I work from home, so luckily my job wasn’t too much of an issue. The only thing that worried me on that front was making sure I had an internet connection set up in our new home immediately. I started a new career as a blogger and I’ve actually been making a decent amount of money off of advertising. I have quite a few followers but I know that I am new at this, and that I need to keep them interested. I told myself that I had to find a way to post at least once a day, even during the move. Luckily we searched wireless internet Kissimmee and found the perfect solution. We signed up for Clear wireless and I was able to keep my business going seamlessly. I would definitely recommend the service to others in Kissimmee.

The Artistry and History of Wine

<img src="http://blog.wine.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Champagne-Wine-Infographic-520.png" alt="wine.com infographic "a toast to champagne" border="0" />
Brought To By Wine.com, Purveyors of Fine Wine and Champagne

The art of winemaking is one that inspires true passion. My first exposure to wine was at art gallery openings and I always connect the memory of fine wines with my memories of fine art. As always, we like to point out that artists exist in so many layers of our society but often the artistry is overlooked. From wine labels and bottle design to the fine vintages that winemakers create, wine is truly an artistic field. I grabbed this fun graphic from wine.com

Its obvious that a "painter" or "sculptor" is pursuing a career in the arts. But, its easily overlooked how often a creative mind is needed in businesses that may not at first glance seem to be arts driven.

Even fast food companies have artists on staff, designing food, creating images and marketing and selling the products.

In the fashion industry, an artistic eye is a must. High end Furriers have been equated with luxury and beauty for years. Many of these businesses are steeped in tradition and craftmanship and are often held back by changes in norms and fashion and how things are promoted.

This does not describe, ML Furs in Denver. This furrier and specialist in fur vests quickly recognized the importance of embracing the world of online commerce and created one of the premier online shops to find fur jackets for sale

Even with nearly 60 years of experience in the offline world, these artists and tailors recognized the importance of moving forward with changes in technology and culture. This leaves zero excuses for our younger artists who came up in the digital world.

They even televise football games on Saturday and Sundays ... hows that for keeping with the times!

Best Book of 2012 for learning how to be a Professional Artist

The Profitable Artist

Learning how to be successful as an artist is surprisingly not a very big part of most artists education.

It is of course, running a business and requires skills outside of simply creating impressive images and artworks. One must figure out how to set prices, where to market their works, how to take advantage of their local opportunities, perhaps secure grants or other loans and funding sources.

There is quite a bit more to it then simply hanging up a shingle, thats for sure. We cover many methods of promotion here at makemoneyfromyourart.com and I try and read and review all the resources I come across. I can say that this particular tome is the best i have yet to come across. Its very comprehensive and covers all the aspects of building a business focused on the creative arts that I have ever imagined and more.

This doesnt come as a surprise as it was built as a collaboration between the NYFA and ArtSpire. As a New York based Artist I frequently have been enriched by information and services offered by the NYFA and this is no exception.

I do recommend this book. Stay tuned for further reviews based on this resource as I am still avidly reading it and pursuing the opportunities it provides.

We often go over the power of spreading your message and art across social media here at makemoneyfromyourart.com . The internet has opened up a great new world for anyone who is willing to put forth the effort of promoting and sharing their arts and causes. Often, we use art to help further awareness of our causes.

In the past much of marketing effort were invasive and direct. People had to opt in and provide information and yet still would often feel invaded when direct mail offers or phone calls occurred. But with the internet people actually intentional decide to be parts of causes, trends and industries they enjoy or need. Social Media is a perfect example of this. Using Facebook, Twitter and newcomer Google + are great ways to access the stream of interested parties that may be interested in your causes, arts, and products. The best part being they actually want to participate in this manner and you arent consistently being blocked by invasive methods.

Creating a digital photo of your media is a quick way to digitize and open up the opportunities offered by the print on demand industry and allows you to begin merchandizing rather than being forced to part with originals that cant be replaced.

When this site began the cost of a decent digital camera was still prohibitive but now one can purchase a 16mp! camera for under $200.

With prices like that one must have a digital camera in their business toolbox.

Some of the best options we have found for canon cameras under $200 are:

Canon Powershot Elph:

The Elph is a 12mp camera with a 4x optical zoom and a cool blue color option. Reviewers often speak favorably of the large digital viewing screen and video quality.

It can be purchased for only $179!

Canon Powershot SD780

The Canon Powershot sd780 is another super slim , high megapixel selection from canon that also comes in an exciting color: red!

It is 12MP has a 3X optical zoom and can be purchased for as little as $159.

Canon Powershot A3300IS

This is a 16Mp camera that can be purchased for under $200!

It also has a 5x optical wide view zoom and comes it at $159!

Make a Side Income with Competitive Poker

As an artist Ive always been drawn to certain exciting crowds and means of earning that are time independent. One great way to do get a little of both at once is via playing poker games. Im not talking pick up games in the dorm room but rather big stakes games with serious players. Funny thing is, Ive never been that great of a player myself, but I can bluff with the best of them which has earned me some big pots. Over the years, I've lost touch with any fun games since Im ove around quite a bit and have left poker behind. Recently, a client showed me OlympicPoker.com and that excited me. I hadnt realized that online poker was so advanced. Ive just started getting back into the game and am really enjoying the various skill levels and risks levels I can experiment with during online matches.

Many people refrain from gambling and that is fine, as great fun can be had in the chatrooms and practice rounds too. Ive had an opportunity to talk shop with some really high ranked players and am happy to have a taste of that part of my life back again.

It is important to read over the finer details at any of the sites though, some offer sign on bonuses, special deals during time periods and all sorts of money saving tricks if you take the time to look into your options.

Seeing the magic of Mary Poppins on Broadway

Guest post written by Olivia Gibbs

I think that one of the most fun things that I've ever done is gone and seen a Broadway play. By now I've seen a few and they're just so entertaining! Well, I want to share that with my family too. My grandkids had never seen a Broadway play before, so I thought it might be fun to fly them out and see one on our dime. Besides, grandparents are supposed to spoil their grandkids.

When I started looking up flights and tickets for this Broadway play, I ran across the site Miracle-Ear.com. Once I looked through it a little bit I showed it to my husband and we scheduled appointments to get fitted with some hearing aids.

Out of all the plays, we decided that Mary Poppins would be a great bet. Sometimes you never know if certain plays are going to be family friendly but it ended up being just perfect for us to go and see. It brought back all the great memories I had of watching the movie when it first came out and how much I loved it.

Zach Gilford's Stellar Performance in "The Son"

My favorite TV episode is from season four of Friday Night Lights. It's called "The Son," and it is the episode where Matt Saracen finds out that his father has been killed in Iraq. Zach Gilford's performance is the sole reason I love the episode so much. I feel that he deserved an Emmy nomination just for his work in that episode alone. There is a scene where Matt goes to the Taylor's house for dinner after viewing his father's dead corpse. Matt breaks down as he talks about how he put all his hatred on his father so that he didn't have to direct it onto anyone else. It broke my heart for him to admit that all of his hurt was fixated on his own father, a deceased man that he could no longer blame for the problems in his life. I wanted to reach into the TV and save Matt from his issues with Julie and his family. When he burst into tears, I nearly cried with him.

Friday Night Lights is a show that's been overlooked for so long, and I have no hope that it will ever get the recognition it deserves. It's in its fifth and final season now. I watch it on the 101 Network via my bestchoicetv.com. It will re-air on NBC sometime later this year.

Native New Yorker

Native New Yorker

Guest post by Gerard Mcdaniel

As a native New Yorker, I’m used to paying inflated costs for everything. When friends or family visit they constantly remark on the cost of coffee, of bread, and of dinner. They comment on how expensive everything is in New York. They’re absolutely right, of course. New York is an expensive place to live. What they don’t grasp, because they don’t get to spend any real amount of time in my great city, is that the costs are absolutely justified. This is the greatest city in the entire world, and I would probably pay most any price to be able to live here. Obviously I don’t have as much expendable income as many of my friends who live elsewhere, and I am smart about saving money wherever I can. A little known fact is that us New Yorkers have the ability to control how much we pay for our energy rates. You can take a look at New York Electricity Rates and find a new provider with more affordable rates! It’s the easiest way in the world to save money; you make no changes at all to your daily life. What could be better than that?

Protect Your Model Skin : Facial Toning Exercises for Art Models

Its not unusual for younger artists to take advantage of the good pay afforded by figure modeling. The sense of rebellion and freedom it speaks to, probably doesn't hurt. But, it is a select few models who get to claim a long run in figure or photo modeling. When one begins to make an actual living based on their physical form and features, it becomes imperative to care for that figure in the best ways possible.

In the more extreme end of the spectrum that leads some models to require professional acne removal but at the very minimum daily stretching, staying hydrated, avoiding over-exposure to the sun and performing simple facial toning exercises like the ones highlighted above can do a lot to extend the mileage on your canvas!

Work of Art - Erik leaves - Both Teams submit crap and Miles is an Art Pussy

<align=right> Good Reality TV but Bad Art on this weeks "Work of Art" featuring Public Art</align=right>

<align=right>I was very disappointed by this weeks episode of "Work of Art", obviously the producers of the show feel they need to make the show more accessable to the rather dumb mean intelligence of the american viewing audience. Reality shows have always focused on the base elements of humanity and culture even if they are pretending to focus on a high art concept.</align=right>
<align=right>Team Challenge = Fail</align=right>

<align=right>The entire concept of a team challenge in a contest of art and creativity is foolish and counterproductive. As a viewer and an artist I dont want to witness the whitewash mediocre mean vision of 4 artists. The skills required for team production and interaction should not be confused and intermingled with the creative process. Foolish, Wrong, Fail from the very beginning.</align=right>
</align=right>
<align=right>The Public Art was uninspired</align=right>

<align=right>Both teams failed in this challenge. The winning team, Team A (RED) created some very ugly park benches. Their lifetime in a public arena would be very limited. Ive seen more beautiful skate parks. The judges comments about hideous 60's minimalist art were right on point and I could imagine the entire project being carried away and spray painted.</align=right>

<align=right>Team B was stronger. Their submission had substance and a true interactiveness, but on the downside the base structure lacked any aesthetic beauty, it look like a scaffold that should be soon removed. The hodge podge of crap that was tacked on on site had no attractive aspects either. Erik was right, a solid piece of sheet metal or a clean coat of spray paint would have been more intelligent decisions.</align=right>

<align=right>These artists were on the spot, hurried and had to work in a team environment so I make no judgments on any of their individual talents.</align=right>
<align=right>
</align=right>
<align=right>My thought process - nature in the city, permanent materials, a land of tall concrete bright animated sunflowers allowing the individual artist to put their touch on each...this changed to a large scale rendition of the iconic Super Mario flower inside of the pipe, bright colors, solid construction, interactive pipe if time allowed. I wonder how that would have played out.</align=right>

<align=right>Erik and Miles </align=right>

<align=right>Erik Johnson had me in stitches when he rightfully flipped out on his group referring to Miles as an "Art Pussy" who had built another "homeless shelter" It was obvious even in the final edited product that Miles is easily controlling his teammates to his vision and Erik wasnt having it!</align=right>
<align=right>
</align=right>
<align=right>If the concept had gone more towards the tree house/clubhouse aspect originally discussed combined with the organic vine elements they would have had an interesting creation, unfortunately they allowed for the input of the artist with wacky clothes ( I dont remember her name and have trouble believing in the eye of an artist who cant dress herself) and this vision changed.</align=right>
<align=right>
</align=right>
<align=right>As a very male artist familiar with the cliches of art school and the "art pussy" aspect of the art crowd, Im very much in support of Eriks complaints. Luckily, my Art school experience had me more in the role of a Miles..so I had no resentment about the weakness and closeminded self referential nature of my peers. But I certainly did not respect it. Miles has shown great ability with materials, showmanship and creating a complete and often complex final product. His works seems finished but so so boring, dreary and self referential, Miles definitely gets the points for being a "professional" and probably is a very smooth operator. Erik was more likely to create something truly great and inspired. A complete series of Miles work to date could do no more than help me sleep at night - perhaps thats his mission but its not one that I support.</align=right>
<align=right>
</align=right>
<align=right>To give Miles one Kudo - the apparently uncontrollable bleet where he put down Trongs(?) piece was also a gut splitter - another example of self referential, in joke art history inspired crap that has little to endear itself with a "normal" viewer.</align=right>
<align=right>
</align=right>
<align=right>I hope Erik is off to big things.</align=right>
<align=right>
</align=right> The world of high technology rarely has a concise connection with the art world, sure, design and packaging and artistic engineering, but not high art or painting. The gelaskin company has created opportunities for artists to change this by creating fine art based skins for all technology for many years now.

Above you will see a very recognizable piece by Monet and another work by Modern Graphic Artist, Frank Miller.

Although they have select modern and indie artists available in their online shop, any Professional artist can integrate Ipad Skins and other techy skins into their merchandise, Gelasksin allows you to create and print skins on demand featuring your own art! Now thats a draw and some great advertising for your art!

How much is your art worth?

How do you respond when a prospective buyer is interested in buying your art?

What costs go into a work of art.

material costs

studio costs

education costs

overhead for storage

marketing/gallery fees?

The almost impossible to quantify amount of what your talent is worth?

Do you keep these things in mind? The artist, Ben Zoltak, explains very well how to weigh these factors and bargain like a professional who know s there value

How to Gesso a Canvas

Many artists start their careers working in specific mediums and progress throughout their career to other forms of expression, not all of us were lucky enough to take formal schooling in methods and preparation. Stretching and preparing your first canvas can be a daunting task. Failure to create and prepare correctly can seriously effect the longevity of your artwork.

The artist Ben Zoltak, explains very well why an artist should bother to learn the proper methods

Gesso is what holds your painting up to the grinding weather of time. Gesso is the foundation for your art, it's what makes the difference between an heirloom piece and a disposable piece of art.

To impress women?

To fulfill an uncontrollable burning desire?

Why do we create?

The pages of this site are frequently filled with tips on how to succeed commercially but hopefully we are all united by the gift (curse?) of creativity that led us to the desire to learn to profit from our creative skills, if only to be able to continue creating.

I was recently reminded of my original motives. You see the art of commercializing or adapting to a market is a creative release in its own for me. So the pages o f this site are often "money, money money," fitting for a site titled "Make money from my art." But, not fitting for my own creative spirit! How about you?

The artist, Mike Lickteig was responsible for this much needed reminder and meditation.

Why do we create Art?

Mr. Lickteig comments on the fascinating times we live in,a time when our works can be instantly assessable by millions.

He asks:

Am I an artist because I have to be? Creativity is frequently misunderstood as a talent bestowed on people that flows through the individual to the canvas, paper, or clay. But I had to learn to be an artist. I had to discover and develop the skills I use to create--a painstaking process typified by long hours and hard work with few rewards beyond the joy of creating.

Discuss this statements relevance to your own artistic philosophy

I've always felt grateful for not being "blessed" with the talent of being able to realistically render objects. With enough practice, I'm sure I could get there, but I've never had the desire. Rather, this lack of "talent", has made it necessary for me to rely on my own wit to produce work that I hope comes across as meaningful, creative, and beautiful in its own right, not merely a "copy" of what already is.

Have you always been an artist, as a youth were you drawn to the act of creation?
Very much so, but not in any traditional fine art sense. I learned to cook, sew, and do woodwork from my grandparents at a young age and have continued creating things ever since.

What are your earliest memories of art?
Visiting my grandfather's woodshop in New Hampshire and being surrounded by wood, paint, tools, and beautiful scenery. At the beginning of each visit, I would come up with an idea for what I wanted to make and he would go about helping me create it.

What have been some positive influences in your development as an artist?
I had a sculpture professor at SUNY New paltz, Pamela Wallace, whose views of art and objects and materials enter into my own art making constantly. A benefit of gardening for a living is the quiet calm energy of physical outdoor work. I have become more perceptive and tuned in to a bigger picture, in both art and life.

Do you have a favorite artist, or school of art?
I love Ann Hamilton, Maya Lin, Bruce Nauman, Andy Goldsworthy, Agnes Martin, Pamela Wallace, Stephen Spaccarelli, Jockum Nordstrom....I could go on. It depends on my mood and what I'm interested in at a given point.

Did you receive a formal education in arts, if not how did you learn to use the materials and mediums that you choose?
Yes, I received a BFA in Printmaking from SUNY New Paltz and hope to earn an MFA in sculpture in the future.

What is your opinion of arts education? Is an artist born or made - or both?
Some born, some made, some are both. My experience with arts education was almost purely positive, and vastly deepened my understanding of what art has the potential to be. But I also felt a great relief after finishing school and just being able to make things without knowing why exactly. Letting the "why" come later. In school, I felt very self-conscious about working on something without first knowing why I was making it and what concept it would convey in the end.

What do you feel most influences your current attitude/style in painting/media.
i.e. Do you find reference and inspiration from pop culture, philosophy, the human body, wonderful vistas etc.
Nature, natural forms, the solace of wide open spaces, human relationships with nature, a search for the perfect balance of isolation and socialization. Spending three seasons of the year working outside, then moving into the introvertedness of winter. The constant pull towards movement, adventure, and discovery. Trying to fully embrace the full spectrum of human emotion.

Has your passion for art detracted from your success in other areas (i.e. have you had to "suffer" to do what you love)
It's hard to know what life would be like as someone/something else. Yes, I suffer, as do all living beings, but my passion for art has brought more joy to my life than suffering so far.

If someone asks you "what do you do", how do you respond?
I work as a gardener and an artist. More specifically, I specialize in residential ornamental horticulture and I am a sculptor.

What are you currently working on, how is it different from past works.? (08/09)
A series of backlit papier mache drawings of abstract tree forms on a stark background.
This is a continuation of a series of a body of work I started in 2007. I'm working a bit smaller than the prairie landscapes of the past.

Do you feel you evolve as an artist?
Mostly when I have a good chunk of time, like a few months, to direct most of my energy towards art making. That's when I actually feel as if the work is evolving. I am able to experiment with new ideas and techniques more freely when I know I have a large expanse of time to focus mainly on art. If I'm just making work in the evenings or the occasional weekend, I'll tend to stick with formulas that I already know work for me, using this time to build up a body of work.
.
Describe a day in the life of you, the artist:
Depends on the season. In the spring/summer/fall, most of my time is spent doing the outdoor physical work of a gardener for clients. Come winter, I like to slow down and spend more time in my studio. Wake up, drink coffee, start working, hopefully it's Wednesday and the classic country show is on WKZE. I love working in the morning. Usually by 3 pm, I'm done with art making and turn my attention to cooking, movie-watching, reading, and socializing.

How important is the company of other artists and creative individuals to your well being and creative output.
Extremely important, especially as a young relatively unknown arttist. Being around other artists facing the same struggles, being able to encourage and support each others creative endeavors, and having a community to discuss art with is essential.

Do you dislike/disdain the works of other artists?
Sure. I probably dislike way more work than I like. Or rather, I am indifferent about the majority of work I see. Pickiness pervades all areas of my life.

Do you display your works? If so, where have you displayed.
Most recently, in fall of 2008, at The Artist's Palate, a restaurant in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Do you have any words of wisdom for artists trying to "break out" and begin to learn the business of art.

Try to stay connected with peers and professors from school. Attend art events when you can. Talk about your art with whoever will listen. Keep making things even when you get discouraged.

I'm actually terrible at all of these things, but I know they are what I need to be doing more of.

Do you find that the practical aspects of selling, promoting and marketing yourself as an artist detracts from your creative process.
Not really. It does keep me busy though.

What is the goal of art!
To think and see in different and meaningful new ways.

What are your goals as an artist?
To tap into a world of beauty that feels timeless and true.
To tap into the world of emotions through visual expression.

We are more than what we make, what other activities do you enjoy?
Reading fiction, a very yin activity, is hands down my favorite activity but can get boring if not mixed in with more yang activities like skiing, hiking, dancing, socializing. Gardening, cooking, listening to music are all quite, reflective activities I enjoy and then there is the occasional wild night on the town.

What do you do to get over the visual equivalent of "writers block ?"
Start making something repetitive, like braiding fabric or drawing squares, just to get my hands moving. Sort of like a meditation, it allows space to open up for new ideas.

In 20 years, what are your aspirations, what would you like to achieve ?
I'd like to feel settled into a geographical location I am inspired by. I want the time and financial freedom to make artwork that people want to own. Small house, big studio, live lightly on the land, do creative work daily. Be represented by a respected gallery.

Have you done any commercial, public or commissioned work ?
I've had one private commission for a drawing.

If so, how do you feel about your vision being directed by third parties ?
Feels a bit too much like "work."

Do you have any opportunities to offer other artists
(collaborations, gallery space, friendship etc.) ?
Friendship aplenty, and garden design services for trade.

Favorite writer, favorite song, favorite inspiration ?
Gretel Ehrlich, Only Love Can Break Your Heart-Neil Young, the open road.

What is the most beautiful thing in the world?
The prairie.

What is beauty?

Your senses falling in love.

How has the internet changed your promotional activities. ?
I am in the process of getting a website together, which is the only internet promo I have done thus far. Sometimes I post photos of openings on Flickr.

Do you have any favorite resources you would like to share?
I often look for artist opportunities on the NYFA website.

Where can one view your work online?
coming soon....www.lorrainelagerbloom.com

Tell the truth, do artists make better lovers?
Of course.

Must reads
Make money with your Art Intro Guide

Make money with your Writing Intro Guide

Pricing Artwork a pricing strategy for art

How to sell artwork so It will sell and make a profit.

Once again, here at How to make Money from your artwork, we must remind you that your art is a commodity and if you desire to profit and live doing what you love, you must remember, learn and embrace some basic business concepts.

Your created art is your inventory.
