How to Find Good Web Hosting Service

What is a Web Hosting? According to Wikipedia "A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to provide their own website accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center. Web hosts can also provide data center space and connectivity to the Internet for servers they do not own to be located in their data center, called colocation."

Beside a domain name, you also need a web host/server to host your web files. So everybody can visit your site anytime. Lots of companies (including your ISP maybe..) offer a web hosting service, but what you should know is how to choose a good (if it's not great..) web hosting for you. I'm not gonna list the companies here. You can find it on Google. But I will guide about what you should consider before buying a hosting service.

Cost
Cost is often the first thing people think about when looking for a Web host. You can find a host that costs anything from free up to hundreds of dollars a month. Hosting Companies with expensive price, often will give you an easier of use, lots of feature (such as Easy Website Builder, great Control Panel, File Manager, Templates, Database Manager, Email Manager, Video Tutorial about Control Panel Usage, etc).

Space
This is also important. You need to choose the right Space for you right now and further. How big is your website files? And what you really need to consider is does your site grow bigger in the future? Do you have plans to add more multimedia content? Database (like MySql) also will eat your space too. Especially if have a growing member list (and if you give them permission to upload their files to your web server).

Scripts and Programs
Do you need any Programs like CGI, Perl, PHP or ASP? Check out your website files if you don't know about this. Ask your web designer (unless you create it on your own). What about the database (like MySql or Postgre-Sql). Also, think like when you choose a hosting space. Do you need to use all the programs above in the future?

At minimum, you should choose a hosting provider that allows you access to a CGI-BIN folder so that you can add scripts later. You should also look for a provider that has pre-built tools like form-to-email, guestbooks, or chat.

Access
How do you need to access your site to make changes to it? Using Control Panel like Cpanel. Some sites allow FTP access from anywhere, while others require that you use only their online tool.

Support
Don't forget support. If your site has problems, support will help you get it back up and running.

Transfer Limits or Bandwidth
Bandwidth charges can cost you much more than the monthly fees you have just for hosting. Bandwidth is the amount of traffic your site gets per month. A site with a high amount of bandwidth will need to pay for higher transfer limits or risk getting hit with high fees. If you anticipate that your site is going to be really popular, then you should watch that hidden bandwidth fees are not part of the service plan.

6 Easy Steps to Start a Website

Just a quick post. If you still confuse about making a website. Here some basic steps on how to start a website....

Decide what kind of website that you want to create and why you want to start a website. There are three website types; content (information), e-commerce (online sales) and interaction (Blogs, Bulletin Boards, Chat Rooms, and gaming sites).

Build your website. Read my older post if you don't know how to create a website or just 'Google' it. Or for the last option, you can hire a Web Designer. Read this article first before you start designing your website.

Buy a Domain Name (I''ll make a post about this later).

Buy or Rent a Web Hosting Service (I''ll also make a post about this later).

Upload your website files to your web server (I'm gonna cover it later).

Promote Your website to get a lot of traffic.

10 Free WYSIWYG Editor for Making Your Website

So, you want to make a website right away?

Just use a WYSIWYG editor, such as Dreamweaver or Frontpage. WYSIWYG is an acronym for What You See Is What You Get. You don't even need to learn html anymore. This editor will let you to make a site without html or programming knowledge. But the problem is that netheir Dreamweaver or Frontpage are not free. And it's not cheap either. Dreamweaver price tag is $399. You can check it at adobe's site. But I tell you, it worth the price (I don't mean to promoting dreamweaver here, lol).

So, what if you cannot afford it? What if you want a free and also good WYSIWYG? Here's a list of free WYSIWYG Editor that you can use to make your website. You can choose one that work best for you.

KompoZer - Easy Web Authoring
KompoZer is a WYSIWYG web editor that allows you to build websites in an easy way. It is essentially an updated version of Nvu with bug fixes. You can learn how to create a website using KompoZer with thesitewizard.com's tutorial How to Design and Publish Your Website with KompoZer.

Nvu - Complete Web Authoring System
Nvu is a WYSIWYG editor that is designed to make the creation of web sites as easy for novices as it is using commercial web editors like DreamWeaver. It is based on the Mozilla Composer web editor (see elsewhere on this page) and includes new features that will eventually make its way back into Mozilla Composer. SeaMonkey Composer (Mozilla Composer)
Seamonkey, the web browser suite from Mozilla, comes with a WYSIWYG web editor that allows you to quickly code web pages using a wordprocessor-like interface. Amaya Web Browsing and Authoring
Amaya is an open source browser and WYSIWYG web authoring environment that purports to allow its users to develop web pages without knowing anything about HTML or CSS. You can create your pages, view them, and upload them to your website using this software. It supports CSS (including CSS 2), HTML, XHTML, MathML 2.0 (which allows you to browse and write web pages containing mathematical symbols), etc. There are versions for Windows (a separate one for NT/2000/XP and 95/98/98SE/ME), Linux and Sparc Solaris.

OpenOffice
OpenOffice is the famous free, open source office suite that is an alternative to Microsoft Office. It allows you to write web pages using a word processor like GUI. It comes with a number of website templates that you can start with. It also contains a number of images and sounds in its gallery that you can use in your web pages. However, some people complain that OpenOffice may mess up the HTML code that you add manually.

Selida
Selida is a free WYSIWYG web editor for the Microsoft Windows platform. Although it is free, it is quite professional. Its program startup time is fast. A HTML reference page is available to developers. You can preview your web page in different resolutions. Other features include tag/attribute/value completion, split HTML/preview, error check support, etc.

WebDwarf
WebDwarf is a free WYSIWYG web page editor. You can drag and drop elements into the web page. It supports both HTML and SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics). You can draw and edit vectors including rectangle, round-corner rectangles, ellipse, pie and polygon. You can add shading (radial or linear) and transparency. Page layout features supported include pixel precision positioning, layout guides with Snap-To Grid or Snap-To Tab operations, rotation, stretching, etc. Only Win32 version is available.

Cross-Browser WYSIWYG Editor
Finally, a free cross-browser WYSIWYG editor that's packed with every rich-text editing feature you need to make your content management system that much better.

JXHTMLEDIT
JXHTMLEDIT is a free Open Source browser-based HTML/XHTML content authoring tool based on the Java 2 Platform that allows WYSIWYG editing on multiple platforms (require the Sun Java^TM Plug-in 1.4 or higher installed on client).

Web Weaver EZ

First Step to Make a Website

Just two words I want to tell you to start learning how to make a website "learn html!" HTML, an initialism of HyperText Markup Language, is the predominant markup language for web pages. This is the basic foundation you need to build up.

You will use html to make a basic website page. You just need a simple text editor, such as notepad, to begin. Here's a great website to begin to learn http://www.w3schools.com/Html/default.asp. And here's another great website http://www.html.net/. Also, you can learn CSS too at html.net.

Can I make a website without learning HTML, JavaScript, PHP, etc?

Actually, you can make a website without knowledge of programming language. Application like MS Frontpage or Dreamweaver or another WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor will make your job easier. WYSIWYG editor will let you to make a html web page without a pain in the ass. Just like you type in MS Word. It's so simple.

Or to make a more dynamic website, you can use CMS (Content Management System) like Joomla!. Just install Joomla! on your web server (I will tell you about this later) and do the simple setup (I will also tell you about this later). Joomla! will let you to choose a perfect design for your site, add more component or modules (such as calendar, community builder, shopping cart, etc). No Programming Required!
