All it takes is a single puff on a cigarette and that can be the beginning of nicotine addiction.

This unhealthy habit may have commenced after feeding that ever-growing pull of curiosity – after all we all get tempted by the forbidden. Others like myself may have experienced forms of peer pressure; wanting to belong when a group comes together to smoke (especially among adolescents). Without even realizing it, giving up smoking becomes more difficult. Some still carry on with the habit thinking they have a social image to maintain (looking cool, sophisticated, tough, mature, etc.) or because it fills a void of sorts.

But that should not be an excuse to continue with the habit especially in this day and age when smoking bans and campaigns against smoking is becoming the norm. One of the very first reasons for giving up smoking is the issue of health. We’re all highly aware by now of the numerous health risks and threats it poses such as cancer, circulation, respiratory problems and heart attacks. But some put up with that, prioritizing vanity over well-being. Little do they know that smoking leads to physical degradation – wrinkles, yellow teeth, bad breath or halitosis, uneven weight distribution, yellow stains on skin and nails, and darker lips are a few ways that smoking can alter one’s appearance. We need to keep that in mind when smoking for the sake of self-image.

Some don’t consider giving up smoking because they think that it’s a good excuse to meet new people, the logic being that cigarettes become a starting point for conversation among smokers (i.e., asking that cute guy for a cigarette or lighter). Or they may not feel confidant amongst others without a cigarette in their hand.

But what about the non-smokers, are they not ostracized by that gesture? Not to mention, where is the consideration for other’s welfare? A growing number of studies have shown that second hand smoke is equally as harmful. And even if they didn’t ask for it, they’ll be having their fair share of respiratory failures, heart ailments and cancer risks.

Another reason for giving up smokingis that though you won’t notice it on a daily basis, but it may lead to relief of financial burden from smoking. Let’s assume you smoke one pack per day. Multiply the cost of one pack of cigarettes by 365 days. Try multiplying your answer by the number of years you’ve smoked. This is how much you COULD have saved. Amazing how it all adds up isn’t it? Moreover, it avoids having to deal with medical bills from health complications caused by smoking. The next time you light up a cigarette, think again.

No, you shouldn’t. But the fact of the matter is that smoking does contribute to hair loss. If you are a smoker there is a good chance that you will show hair loss as a symptom; if you do stop smoking this problem might decrease appreciably.

The effect of carbon monoxide

If you are losing hair and if this hair loss is attributed to smoking, you could use a prescription medication like Chantix to help you stop smoking. When you smoke, you are actually taking in quite a bit of carbon monoxide as well as many other harmful chemicals into your body. This prevents oxygen and various vital ingredients from reaching the various organs and cells. The hair follicles need a lot of oxygen as the cells present there grow very fast and need a continuous supply of nutrients and oxygen. The increased levels of carbon monoxide in the blood restrict hair growth. It makes sense to stop smoking if only for the sole purpose of preventing hair loss. There are always medications like Chantix to help you along in the process.

Hair nourishment goes for a toss

The fact that your body is being polluted by various toxins as a result of smoking means that your body is busy throwing the toxins out. All its essential resources are being used to purge itself of the chemicals and harmful substances that have been inhaled as a result of smoking. Thus, many of its essential activities like hair nourishment etc. are not given the full focus of attention. This results in hair loss. Quite a number of smokers are vain about their looks. A medication like Chantix has been seen to help people kick this addiction. If not for anything else, you could stop smoking to save your hair!

Blood circulation, hair loss and smoking

They are all related. Nicotine and your blood vessels don’t see eye to eye. Nicotine contracts the blood vessels, and also affects the blood circulation in your hair. Hair growth is affected and most of the time poor blood circulation results in hair loss. This could be avoided by cutting down on your cigarettes. Chantix helps you do that slowly and without any of the associated withdrawal symptoms. When you stop smoking you can sense the immediate results in terms of hair growth. There is no doubt that smoking and hair loss are related. Various studies conducted also prove the same.

Quit smoking withdrawal symptoms have some common traits with having a cold.

Quitters flu is the common name used to describe the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. Understanding what you are going to be experiencing may help you better prepare yourself to move through this stage easier.

The following is a list of common of quit smoking withdrawal symptoms:

cravings to smoke (understandable)
irritable and cranky (no surprise here)
insomnia
fatigue
headache
cough and sore throat
dry mouth
tightness in your chest
concentration issues

Knowing the five common coping skills for nicotine withdrawal also help to conquering this addiction

Delay- urges normally pass within 3-5 minutes
Distract- try to do something to take your mind off things
Drink- don’t substitute one addiction for another, but drink water to keep your body hydrated to fight off cravings
Deep Breathing- This will help you to relax your mind and heart
Discuss- talk about how you are feeling with someone close or join a support forum to help with coping with quitting smoking

There are other things you can do to help you with quitting smoking and overcoming your quit smoking withdrawal symptoms, but the above are your most common. Remember to get lots of rest and the biggest piece of advice is to do things to keep your mind occupied on something else, such as exercise and learning some good relaxation techniques.

We are able to in this day and age to arm ourselves with so much knowledge of overcoming this addiction, that it is hard not to succeed, but with any addiction, overcoming your withdrawal symptoms will be difficult.

So once again I will sincerely congratulate you for your decision to kick this habit in the butt once and for all.

Air Purifiers with HEPA (High Energy Particle Arresting) filters were originally developed for the atomic energy commission and are used in commercial clean rooms to remove particles of dust and other airborne pollution. This is a paper or polymer sheet with very tiny holes that allow airflow to pass though the material but not very much else. The holes are so small you need a lot of surface area for a reasonable amount of airflow to pass though the material. It is because of this that the medium is always folded in an accordion or zigzag fashion to get a lot of surface area in a small area. There is also a mixed version of the technology that one manufacturer uses where the holes in the HEPA filter are slightly larger to promote more airflow but the air is charged with electrostatic wands. Which then attracts any of the smaller particles that get thru the holes. HEPA Filters work well in the home for trapping particulates. The disadvantage is that the filters must be changed regularly (every 6-months to 5-years depending on the manufacturer). Before purchasing you would also want to review how much air by-passes the filter, fan noise, how long the filter is good for and finally price of both original unit and replacement filters. The review of any HEPA unit depends on the efficiency (how much air by-passes the filter), fan noise, filter life and price.

UV air purifiers use ultraviolet light. Ultraviolet light in the right intensity destroys the DNA of microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses. The disadvantage of a UV air purifier is that removes very few gas pollutants and no air particles. It would be necessary then to purchase a UV air purifier along with another type or one that combines with another filter system.

Ion Generator Air Purifiers are small air purifier devices that put out a stream of negatively charged Ions. These ions charge particulate pollution and when the particle bumps up against something it sticks due to the electronic charge. These devices are used on US submarines and in the poultry industry to keep the feather dust down.

These air purifiers do what they say but there are some very distinct disadvantages. Particulates end up on your walls so your walls turn black near the device. Secondly, since they typically do not have a fan they only work in a localized area. They also do nothing for gas pollution and some may put off some dangerous Ozone.

You can see just with the 3 examples above there are differences in air purifiers. Research and comparison shopping is necessary to find the right purifier for your specific case. Do not allow promotional hype to sway your judgment, picking the wrong air purifier is as bad as not having one at all.

There are lots of ways you can enjoy the life rather than smoking cigarette. Most of the time people start smoking for social status and for fun without knowing the fact that this one puff is enough to cause addiction. Cigarette smoking is not only an addiction rather it can be very dangerous and it is going to be a real killer. Quitting smoking is very essential for vital health.

When you stop smoking, you can enjoy the quit smoking benefits as fast as within 20 minutes. The abnormally raised heart rate and blood pressure comes back to normal within an hour. The carbon monoxide content in the circulating blood decreases and thus improves oxygen supply to all the organs of the body. As your body does not have to produce mucus in large extent to eliminate the irritants, breathing becomes normal and a lot easier.

When you quit smoking for nearly 6 months, the chances of getting cardiovascular disease reduces by half and then slowly declines. However, to reduce the risk of getting lung cancer to at least by half, you need to quit smoking for more than 10 years. After 15 years of cessation, the chance of getting lung cancer is very close to a non-smoker. In nut shell, the earlier you stop smoking, the longer you can live.

Once you stop smoking, you will get back the sense of taste and smell and you can enjoy the food just like you used to enjoy before smoking. When you quit smoking, you can have peace of mind knowing that your life and your family’s health are not at risk any more.

Quitting smoking is not an easy task. Most of the smokers think they can quit any time. But the truth is that the cravings for cigarette do not allow you to quit so easily. You might also be worried about the withdrawal symptoms of smoking such as weight gain, anxiety and irritability. However, with strong determination and planned effort you can quit smoking for good. Of these numbers, about ninety percent is caused by cigarette smoking. There would be a significant decrease in the annual death rate if deaths cause by lung cancers were completely eliminated.

Despite the warnings of Surgeon General on the health risks of smoking cigarettes for more than 5 decades, millions of Americans have ignore this warning and have continued to light up. More and more, the association between smoking and cancer has continued to increase. It has been scientifically and medically proven that smoking does cause lung cancer. It also increases the chances of developing the cancers of the pharynx, bladder, pancreas, kidney, esophagus, oral cavity, larynx and even cervical cancer.

From this we can see that the risk of developing any of these diseases is related to the total lifetime exposed to cigarette smoke. This of course is measured by the number of cigarettes consumed each day and how long a person has been smoking and at what age they actually did start to smoke. The longer a person has been smoking, the more they stand to develop other smoke related diseases including; coronary hearts disease and chronic lung cancer.

To avoid getting none of these diseases, it is advisable that you quit smoking and the earlier you do that the better for you. It must be noted that the health risks associated with cigarette smoking are not limited to smokers alone but also to anyone who constantly inhales the smoke from cigarettes. For example, daily exposure to environmental tobacco smoke can increase non-smokers chances of developing lung cancer. In other words environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is the smoke non-smokers are exposed to when they share the same air space with smokers. In most cases, the non-smoker who is inhaling the polluted air is even at a higher risk than the one smoking and exhaling the smoke. It is for this reason that the United States Environmental Protection Agency in 1992 released an assessment report on the risk of shared air space between smokers and non-smokers. The report showed clearly that shared air space between smokers and no smokers also complicated issues in young children with respiratory problems.

Despite all these complications, smokers still have a chance to be healthy if only they can quit smoking. The earlier a smoker quits the better his or her chances of avoiding these diseases. As soon as a person quits smoking, the risk of developing these diseases starts to reduce. The development of all smoke related cancers and other chronic diseases is also drastically reduced. Coronary hearts disease for one has been shown to decline rapidly within only a few years of quitting. Likewise pregnant women who quit smoking during the first trimester are known to reduce complications such as still birth and low birth weight. It makes sense therefore to heed sound advice and quit smoking to avoid getting cancer.

Cigarette smoking is a fashion today and it is a habit which has gained social acceptability and respectability. In social gatherings, after dinner or lunch or even in free time we relax with a cigarette or a cigar. Smoking knows no national boundaries. While the rich in the West indulge in expensive Cuban cigars and branded costly cigarettes, those in developing countries go for cheaper brands or even local substitutes of cigarettes like ‘beedis’ in India. Sometime back it was estimated that there are around 20 million regular smokers of cigarettes in India. The figure must have gone up considerably since then. Add to it, the beedi-smokers whose number may be twice as large and only then you can have some idea of the gigantic size of this problem. For the entire world, the total number of smokers was estimated about 10 years back as 1.22 billion. When this habit is so widespread, the question arises as to why I am raising the issue of quitting smoking.

Why do people SMOKE ?

Man has always tried to find an easy way to get ecstasy and forget his pain through drugs, alcohol and smoking. Although, the last one seems harmless and has acquired social acceptability, it is in fact the most dangerous and harmful so far its magnitude is concerned. Tobacco is the most widely used drug and its consumption leads to severe health damage. Smoking cigarettes is the most common method of consuming tobacco. Cigarettes are addictive and the smoker becomes the slave of this addiction with both psychological and physiological dependence. All of you must have seen chain-smokers who cannot remain without a lighted cigarette between their fingers.

Why do people start smoking? It is difficult to answer this question. Most smokers begin during teenage. Smoking is portrayed as rebellion and risk taking which appeals to the immature mind. It also provides pleasurable sensation and euphoria. Cigarette smoking is taken as a symbol of achieving maturity and adulthood. Peer pressure also plays a very important part. Because teenagers are under greater influence of their peers, attempts by parents, schools, and health professionals at preventing people from trying cigarettes are bound to fail. Later on after the addiction has entrenched itself, the fear of withdrawal symptoms becomes a strong motivation to continue.

Its Poisonous Contents

Nicotine is a powerful poison and a very effective insecticide. No person in his proper senses would like to inhale an insecticide. But the smoker has reached such a state of addiction and dependence on tobacco that he blissfully ignores this fact. Each cigarette delivers into the blood stream about 1 mg of nicotine along with substantial quantity of carbon monoxide, which is again a very poisonous gas.

The Havoc on Health

Smoking leads to cancer, particularly lung cancer, cancers of the larynx and mouth and pancreatic cancer. Smokers are about ten times more prone to lung cancer than non-smokers. Smoking also causes heart attacks, strokes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchitis and emphysema. Medical research has shown that life expectancy of smokers is less than that of non-smokers. The World Health Organization estimates that tobacco caused 5.4 million deaths in 2004 and 100 million deaths in the 20th century. Such figures are bound to ring the alarm bells to any smoker. Incidence of impotence is approximately 85% higher in male smokers as compared to non-smokers.

And on your Finances

Besides adversely affecting the addicted person’s health, smoking has an equally devastating effect on his finances. It is a very expensive habit. I will jut quote one true story which appeared in the Reader’s Digest. “W.G.Kortesmaki, a 20-a-day smoker, gave up smoking suddenly in 1953. To keep himself honest, he put aside each day the price of a packet of cigarettes. In 1970, he had Rs.21,038, including Rs.3,190 in interest – enough to pay for a five-week trip to Europe for himself, his wife and their two daughters. Every cent was money he had not burnt” (Reader’s Digest, May 1972). You can guess how much money is just wasted due to the habit of smoking.

Give up these Cancer Sticks

Smoking is one of the hardest habits to give up, and the addict continues cigarette smoking even though he is fully aware of the damage that he is doing to his own body. The withdrawal symptoms that every smoker faces when he tries to give up smoking can make him go back to this bad habit. To get rid of the habit, one needs not only a great deal of determination to break free from this slavery to an addiction but also constant support of friends and relatives. They should make him realize the greater and long term benefits of quitting this addiction then the transient satisfaction of smoking. And once he stops smoking, he will soon find that he can think more clearly, that he sleeps better and that his senses of taste and smell have improved.

How to Quit Smoking Cigarettes Now

Have you or anybody you know tried to quit those evil life draining cancer sticks? Do you seem to just lack the will power to stop smoking? Did you fail like 99 out of 100 Quitters do?

When smokers decide to quit their vicious habit, they mostly undergo both mental and physical symptoms which are very difficult to ignore. Since smoking has already been a habit to these people, they may likely find themselves craving for a smoke. In addition, people who generally smoke because of stress or anxiety, may find themselves cringing for one especially when they are being pressured or tensed. Aside from these symptoms, they may also experience physical changes such as intestinal disorders or tingling in their feet or hands. A lot of people experience constipation when they are in the withdrawal stage and in order to endure such a process, you need to take in a lot of fluids and increase your fiber intake. You have to remember that nicotine is not the only solution to these symptoms. Moreover, it is likely that they will develop other symptoms such as coughing, sweating and sore throats which are normal indications of their smoking withdrawal. People can even feel dizzy and light headed when they quit smoking since a lot more oxygen is being delivered to their brains.

A lot of times, hunger can also be a symptom for people who are trying to quit smoking. Since they are craving for a smoke, a lot of people confuse such with hunger and therefore compensate their non-nicotine days with eating more food.

Emotional Symptoms

If a person has been smoking for a long time already, then it may be a lot more difficult to quit smoking because of the graver symptoms he may experience during withdrawal. For example, a person who is trying to quit smoking may experience changes in his emotions. He may start having tantrums or perhaps temper changes. He may get angry very easily at things which may very well be normal to him when he was still smoker. Also, when in withdrawal, it may be very difficult for him to focus and make decisions for himself.

Indeed quitting your habit of smoking is a very difficult task especially if you have already grown accustomed to it. However, it is still possible to erase such a habit from your system as long as you have the right mindset and attitude. It is important that you take support from your family and friends and remember the benefits which you can gain just as long as you endure the withdrawal stage and succeed at finally removing the nicotine inside your system. All you have to do is endure these quit smoking symptoms and you will definitely succeed in the end.

But what are they, how do they work and why are they so popular?

To answer the question of what they are, electronic cigarettes are designed to simulate the look, feel and effect of smoking tobacco products such as cigarettes and cigars. They are battery powered devices that deliver nicotine in a vaporised state, once inhaled by their users.

The electronic cigarette is non-flammable and involves no actual tobacco smoke or tobacco. This is why the electronic cigarette is considered the safer alternative to smoking.

People who buy electronic cigarettes will see that the devices work by way of advanced microelectronic technology that gives smokers the nicotine dose that they crave. One of the benefits of buying an electronic cigarette or e-cigarette is that they are re-usable and have refillable and replaceable parts however a number of disposable e-cigarettes have been developed.

Many electronic cigarettes are designed to look like real cigarettes and comprise of very few main parts including; a rechargeable battery, an atomisation chamber and a replaceable nicotine cartridge.

They work when a user inhales on the e-cigarette, and then liquid nicotine held inside the nicotine chamber is drawn into the atomisation chamber. The power from the battery heats up the liquid and results in the user inhaling nicotine vapour.

Instead of exhaling smoke, a vapour is emitted that comprises of mainly water vapour and excess nicotine vapour. It is odourless and it is claimed that smoking e-cigarettes does not run the risk of passive smoking.

This is why electronic cigarettes are considered a safer option and why they are becoming increasingly popular. Recent studies have shown that it is tobacco as opposed to nicotine that causes most smoking related deaths and illnesses.

Despite this, there are still restrictions in place regarding the use of electronic cigarettes for example they are not considered suitable for any person under 18 years of age or for use by non-smokers.

Electronic cigarettes are currently unrestricted in the United Kingdom and United States however, in Brazil, Canada, Panama and Singapore, the sale and use of electronic cigarettes is forbidden. Electronic cigarettes without nicotine are permitted in Australia and Denmark and in New Zealand, electronic cigarettes can only be sold as a registered medicine.

From when they were first introduced up to know, there are divided reactions about electronic cigarettes. There are many who believe that they are not effective, but many are also convinced that they can fulfill the purposes that they are made to do. One of those purposes is to serve as aide in quitting smoking.

Different from traditional cigarettes, no tobacco is used with smokeless cigarettes. Because of that, they are able to produce benefits for the health. Those health benefits specifically refer to them being less harmful as they produce no smoke and release no carcinogens when used. In addition, they are being a help to the environment as that in turn decreases pollution.

However, there is still another health benefit that the said new smoking devices can give that attracts more smokers. And that is being able to help users successfully stop smoking. Just like the other health benefits, this one is possible because of the absence of tobacco.

To be able to provide the same smoking sensation with traditional cigarettes and be safer alternatives at the same time, e-cigs use e-liquid. The said solution is basically made up of nicotine diluted in glycerin. It could be in different flavors and the nicotine in a solution could be in various amounts. Because of that, the control over the amount of nicotine taken in is given to the user, making it a big help to quit smoking.

However, having an electronic cigarette alone is not enough to really be able to quit smoking. You have to know how to use it and here are the steps that you need to take.

Identify the e-liquid that you want to use. That is, know the flavor and the nicotine level you are comfortable with. From the nicotine level you have identified, gradually lower it until you can tolerate using an e-liquid with zero nicotine.

Know how to refill the device. If you know how to personally refill your e-cig, you will be able to use it anytime, anywhere. That keeps you away from being tempted to use real cigarettes whenever you have the urge to smoke.

Be disciplined. Keep your eyes on your goal of quitting smoking. Stick to the plan of gradually lowering down the nicotine level on the e-liquid that you are using and not be tempted to do the reverse.

Implementing these general steps will help you in quitting smoking with the help of electronic cigarettes. Get them done efficiently so you can enjoy a healthier life.
