Million Dollar Bail Out

Do you think it would hurt, help or not make a difference in the U.S. Economy if the federal government gave every man, woman and child that's a U.S. Citizen $1,000,000 instead of the bailout package set forth by the Bush and Obama administrations?

It seems to that most people would have immediate spending power and with the bad habits would start spending. Furthermore, many people would be able to pay off mortgages, student loans, consumer debt, save, invest and start new businesses. There would be no need to forgive bad loans since people would have money to negotiate deals with creditors.

I haven't done the math and have heard through forgotten sources that the bailout money from the Bush and Obama administrations would allow the U.S. federal government to give every U.S. Citizen $1,000,000.

A million dollar bail out would mean that writers, authors, editors, book publishers and those in the literary community would have the money necessary to bring their dreams and visions to light.

Marketing Books at Parties

Recently an author told me that they were going to a friends for a birthday celebration. I suggested that the author bring several copies of the book to ensure they wouldn't miss any chances to market and sell their new novel. They agreed.

The next morning the author contacted me via text that read "wanted to let you know I sold 8 books last night!" and not two minutes later I received another text that read "make that 9." Had the author not been ready they would have missed a chance to turn a great opportunity into real sells. As an author you are a business and every business must sell in order to stay profitable and grow. Don't ever get into that sick mind set of I don't do that as it relates to marketing and selling your book. This is especially true with your first book.

People tend to buy the author and not so much the book. Given the book is really compelling the reader will tell others on their own without you having to do much of anything. The focus is to remember to always stay ready by having books with you at all times and don't be afraid to engage people as they may be willing to buy. Discount no one as you never know who will buy one or more of your books.

How to Start Your Writing Career?

How do you start your writing career? What are the first three things you need to do?

"THINK, PLAN, EXECUTE!"

1) THINK -about the type of writing you want to do. Do you want to write and publish books, blogs, movie scripts, webisodes, songs and/or marketing materials, etc.

2) PLAN -after you've decided what type of writing you want to pursue then study that craft. Additionally, study the top 5%-10% in that field of writing. Take what you deem as good and leave the rest. Create a long and short-term plan of ACTION. Set ways to measure your activity.

3) EXECUTE -no plan is any good if it is only theory, get started where you are and never stop until you get what you want. Be relentless in your pursuit.

Traditional, Self-Publish and POD

There's traditional publishing, self-publishing and everything else (POD, etc.)

Traditional publishing is where you submit your manuscript and hope someone takes interest and they sign you to a publishing deal. There are exceptions to the rule, but for the most part the publisher owns the copyright in exchange for and advancement against future royalties you may or may not earn. You receive a very small percentage from the sell/sale of every book once you have recouped the advancement that was given to you when you initially signed your publishing deal. By small I mean 5% to 10%, may be a little lower and maybe a little higher.

With true self-publishing you do everything the traditional publisher will do accept you retain ownership of your copyrights and keep anywhere between 40% to 97% of the profits when your books are sold. Additionally, you don't get and advancement, rather you invest money into editing, production and marketing, etc.

POD, etc. is when a company provides some or all of the services of publishing your book. Sometimes you retain your copyrights and sometimes you don't. (READ THE FINE PRINT)

Not long ago Servant Jones asked me about self-publishing and using companies such as Xlibris, E-Booktime or Dog Ear Publishing, below is my response. It should be noted that among other things the Servant Jones stated "I don't have much money, I'm just trying to realize my life long dream of publishing my first book and I have a small buzz of people maybe 200 or so who are waiting to read it."

When I speak of self-publishing I speak of the author starting and running their own publishing company and growing from there. With that in mind when I speak of self-publishing I speak of the author taking full control of their own destiny with the will of the Creator and the sanction of the ancestors.

You have with in you the ability to make it happen if only you Think, Plan and Execute. If you take the road I and many others have taken to truly self-publish your own books you maintain complete creative control over your content and layout design. Additionally, you are able to keep more of the profit vs. what you would get using a company such as Xlibris, E-Bootime or Dog Ear Publishing. Your upfront cost may be slightly higher, but you stand to make substantially more than you would per book sold than if you were using one of the companies mentioned above.

In How to Self-Publish for Profit I take you through the steps that I use to publish my own books. To date I've published six (6) books and there's no sign of letting up now, were on a roll. You'll also find a wealth of information and resources in BOOK PIMPING and Make Money Self Publishing.

Importance of a Book Fair & Literary Event

Below are my responses on a book publishing forum about attending literary events, a book fair and expo. I wanted to republish my response, because within the message you may find resources, tools, steps, wisdom and information to assist you in your self-publishing journey. As always your comments are valued and appreciated.

Do you think attending literary events is important as an author?

ANSWER:

When I think of literary events I think of events centered more around novels and children's books more than anything else. All of my books are fact based resources guides.

With the exception of How to Self-Publish for Profit, my books are on the music industry and modeling. It has been my experience that at literary events my target market doesn't attend outside of those seeking to publish or improve their publishing business. With that in mind literary events typically don't work well for me.

If I were a writer of novels and/or children's books I'd think literary events would seem perfect to touch my target reader.

Sylvia, you mentioned "since I have over 800 authors, writers & poets in the group, and we always have very very low turn out at our events (and you can't blame finances because over half the events we hold are almost free)..."

RESPONSE:

This is a primary reason that money isn't the issue keeping most people from succeeding. I imagine that for you to have over 800 members in your group that you are a power networker unlike many in your organization. Sylvia, many people talk about how bad they "want it", how money is the issue and how they can't seem to get ahead, but the truth is many people lack the burning desire, a practical written plan and don't do things everyday towards achieving their goals and realizing their potential.

At the end of the day we tend not to activity on information until we truly want to make a move, change, update or have our backs against the wall.

If out of 800 people you get a conversion rate of 1% you're doing good (that's 8 people). If out of 800 people you get a conversion rate of 10% (that's 80 people) you should call Oprah and Tyra Banks, because you have a serious story.

Unfortunately, we often have not been taught about the number of impressions needed to get people to respond to an advertisement/announcement nor are we taught about conversion rates, so we may have an unrealistic expectation on how many people will respond to an advertisement.

At this very moment I'm unable to provide supporting evidence for my claim. However, when you do the research you'll find the numbers to be close to extremely accurate.

Thank you for starting this forum. Perhaps others may read through it a few times and find just the spark they need to keep on keeping on.

Self Publish Your Own Video

Having video is paramount for any writer/author/self-publisher seeking to continue to brand, market, promote and publicize their business and books. Online videos have brought me paying clients and has increased my brand recognition. The interesting thing is that consumers (if that is who you are targeting) often are not as concerned with the most professional video as they are the content that you're delivering.

At the end of the day they want to know what's in it for them -benefits and features. Once you explain that in plain view they are willing to bite on your irresistible offer.

If possible you want to upload between two (2) to four (4) videos a month. Remember you don't have to invest thousands to record, edit and upload a video to various websites, blogs and social networking communities. You do need a burning desire, a practical written plan and to execute that plan daily. With a consumer camcorder or video cam you may record your own video.

Borrowed Ideas -How to Self Publish?

The interesting thing about ideas is that we all borrow them. Some of us give or attempt to give credit, while others do not. Unfortunately, ideas may not be copywritten, trademarked or patented. However, once you put your idea to something tangible then you may protect in legally using the letter of the law in these United States.

As you continue to build your brand and expand your reach you'll find that when someone borrows your ideas and doesn't credit or pay you a wealth of other opportunities typically will open up for you. For instance, I've been contacting people all day on this site, but you're on of the few that I'm conversing with. Within our correspondence a business relationship is beginning to form. I'm not sure where it will lead, but it may be good for us both.

My first book was stolen word-for-word and released by someone else. Because the intent was wicked and it was not meant for them I've been able to move forward and create a tiny fortune for myself through other related books, materials, consulting and paid speaking engagements. The person that stole my intellectual property (book) was part of my encouragement to keep on keeping on. Now my books are sold globally in physical and ebook format. :-)

If you haven't done so already you want to have a way to capture email addresses. Sending emails is more cost-effective than snail or traditional mail. Additionally, with the right campaign you are able to better monitor the effectiveness of your marketing and promotions activity.

What is your book genre?
Do you have a monthly marketing or project budget for your book?
Do you have an official website?
Is your book available in ebook format?
Do you have distribution for your book?
Within a 7 day period how often do you market and promote your book?
Are all the irons in the fire directly related to selling your book?

Burn-out typically means you've stopped being excited. You must find small ways to keep you excited on your journey to selling 10,000 to 1,000,000 Books within the next 12 to 36 months.

These viewers may be people looking at the cover of your book in a bookstore, at a book signing and most importantly while online. Below is some information on on how to self publish and convert viewers to buyers.

This means they must hear, touch, taste, smell, see or otherwise experience something before they buy. If we hold that to be true it's safe to assume that if you were to enter a new market without any set up you are doomed to fail miserably for the most part, because most the people at the book expo or trade show would only have heard about you and your book for the first time. There are exceptions to the rule. For instance, if you are relentless in your efforts during the event you may be able to change your sell to impression conversion rate. In an attempt not to use to much jargon here are some solutions.

1) Prior to attending an event use social networking to tap into the local market. Myspace, Youtube, Revver, Linkedin, etc.

2) Prior to going to an event create a video and send it out to people using your social network platform.

3) Hire a publicists or pr firm in the local market you're going to in an effort to get press. Ideally this should be done 6 to 9 months for print media. Obviously online media needs less time.

4) Do your on publicity or pr work informing the local market of your arrival and where you'll be signing books.

5) KNOW THIS: Branding, marketing, promotions, advertising and publicity is a 24/7 activity. If you're on the road traveling leave flyer's in the gas station & restaurant in route. You never know who may see your material. I often leave flyer's vividly displayed right at the gas pump. It works!

6) If you're on the plane give out flyer's and business cards, etc. while waiting to board and while on board the plane. Every situation is an opportunity to sell many books.

Since, your book is coming and preparing to be self published, now is a great time to start talking about it to people. Learn the art of naturally speaking about your self published book in your everyday conversation. Make it your business to play the game. The game is finding a way to talk about your book no matter who you're talking to or the subject you're talking about. The more you do it the better you get. The business is doing it.

Many writers and new authors think their work is done once they complete the writing of the book. However, they quickly find out that the writing part is often simple compared to the constant branding, marketing, promoting and publicizing that it takes to spread the word about their new book.

In life as in the business of self publishing things tend to run in cycles and have there seasons. There's a difference between a traditional publisher, vanity press and self publishing your own book.

Self publishing is what I do. It is where you set up a company and handle all aspects of the publishing process -writing, editing, graphic design, marketing, promotions, distribution and royalty collection. Since, you do all the work and/or outsource to other professionals then your company is due the lions share of the money generated.

There are pros and cons to self publishing as with anything. However, self publishing positions you to create intellectual property that may be placed in your estate and passed on to future generations. While I admit it isn't for everyone, I'm believing that more often than not most people can and should go the self publishing route. As you begin to garner certain amounts of commercial success it may be wise to partner with larger companies. Typically, when you start doing so well larger companies will approach you because they've heard about what you're doing. They are much more inclined to offer you a better deal although not much better. LOL

Up until this part we've been talking primarily about publishing physical books. There's also publishing through your blog, website, ebooks, special reports and audio books, etc.

How Many Books Have You Sold?

I had the opportunity to do a book signing with a young lady. She told me she had printed 1,000 books and was happy that she had sold nearly all of them and that she was preparing to write her second book. I said great how soon before you go to press to get more of your books that are nearly sold out. Her response "I hadn't thought about reprinting." WHAT, I replied have you ever considered that their are billions of people on earth. Your book is your intellectual property that should be reprinted and packaged as many times as the market will bear.

These books we write and publish I told her help set us up for residual/passive income that may be passed to future generations. This is how we continue to build our legacies I suggested. After that she said she would reprint her first book.

My point here is to say that many times we stop before we have begun with no fault of anyone or anything but our own.

Self Publish Your Own Book Marketing Tips

The details below is my response to a question about how to self publish your own book using book clubs, speaking engagements, effectiveness of touring and finding readers that will buy your book title.

Book clubs may not be the best place for authors & books to sell the most amount of books at one time. The best place to sell books outside of book clubs (if this is the best place) depends on the genre of book. Once you know who your target market is and where they are, you go there and that ultimately is the best place to find potential customers.

I've written and published books on the music business, the modeling industry and self-publishing your own books. More than likely I will get a greater response for the self-publishing book on this site than I will for my modeling and music business books, because this is where my target market is for the How to Self-Publish for Profit Book.

Speaking engagements are effective and should be done for a number of reasons.

1) They help build your brand.
2) They give you a great deal of impulse buys.
3) They often lead to other opportunities -keep your eyes and ears open.
4) They help build your credibility as a speaker and author.
5) They give you additional material to sell -video record all of your talks/seminar/workshops.
6) They build your email list -always collect email addresses.

Touring may be very cost-effective if done correctly. You may always get sponsors to reduce and/or pay for your entire trip(s). You simply need to marriage who may benefit from you mentioning their company on the road. The possibilities are limited only by your creative imagination.

We are in a global economy and it's easier now more than ever to participate in the international markets. Whatever your book is about and whoever your reader is the book will sell based upon a number of factors -one of the most important being how effective you execute your branding, marketing, promoting, publicizing and advertising strategy.
