Computer: Machine capable of executing instructions to perform operations on data. The distinguishing feature of a computer is its ability to store its own instructions. This ability makes it possible for a computer to perform many operations without the need for a person to enter new instructions each time. Modern computers are made of high-speed electronic components that enable the computer to perform thousands of operations each second.

The history of computer development is often referred to in reference to the different generations of computing devices. Each generation of computer is characterized by a major technological development that fundamentally changed the way computers operate, resulting in increasingly smaller, cheaper, and more powerful and more efficient and reliable devices. Read about each generation and the developments that led to the current devices that we use today.

First Generation – 1940-1956: Vacuum Tubes

Second Genera tion – 1956-1963: Transistors

Third Generation – 1964-1971: Integrated Circuits

Fourth Generation – 1971-Present: Microprocessors

Fifth Generation – Present and Beyond: Artificial Intelligent

First Generation – 1940-1956: Vacuum Tubes

The first computers used vacuum tubes for circuitry and magnetic drums for memory, and were often enormous, taking up entire rooms. They were very expensive to operate and in addition to using a great deal of electricity, generated a lot of heat, which was often the cause of malfunctions. First generation computers relied on machine language to perform operations, and they could only solve one problem at a time. Input was based on punched cards and paper tape, and output was displayed on printouts

The UNIVAC and ENIAC computers are examples of first-generation computing devices.

The UNIVAC was the first commercial computer delivered to a business client, the U.S.

Census Bureau in 1951.

Second Genera tion – 1956-1963: Transistors

Transistors replaced vacuum tubes and ushered in the second generation of computers. The transistor was invented in 1947 but did not see widespread use in computers until the late 50s. The transistor was far superior to the vacuum tube, allowing computers to become smaller, faster, cheaper, more energy -efficient and more reliable than their first-generation predecessors. Though the transistor still generated a great deal of heat that subjected the computer to damage, it was a vast improvement over the vacuum tube. Second-generation computers still relied on punched cards for input and printouts for output.

Second-generation computers moved from cryptic binary machine language to symbolic, or assembly, languages, which allowed programmers to specify instructions in words. High-level programming languages were also being developed at this time, such as early versions of COBOL and FORTRAN. These were also the first computers that stored their instructions in their memory, which moved from a magnetic drum to magnetic core technology. The first computers of this generation were developed for the atomic energy industry.

Third Generation – 1964-1971: Integrated Circuits

The development of the integrated circuit was the hallmark of the third generation of computers. Transistors were miniaturized and placed on silicon chips, called semiconductors, which drastically increased the speed and efficiency of computers.

Instead of punched cards and printouts, users interacted with third generation computers through keyboards and monitors and interfaced with an operating system, which allowed the device to run many different applications at one time with a central program that monitored the memory. Computers for the first time became accessible to a mass audience because they were smaller and cheaper than their predecessors.

Fourth Generation – 1971-Present: Microprocessors

The microprocessor brought the fourth generation of computers, as thousands of integrated circuits were built onto a single silicon chip. What in the first generation filled an entire room could now fit in the palm of the hand. The Intel 4004 chip, developed in 1971, located all the components of the computer – from the central processing unit and memory to input/output controls – on a single chip.

In 1981 IBM introduced its first computer for the home user, and in 1984 Apple introduced the Macintosh. Microprocessors also moved out of the realm of desktop computers and into many areas of life as more and more everyday products began to use microprocessors.

As these small computers became more powerful, they could be linked together to form networks, which eventually led to the development of the Internet. Fourth generation computers also saw the development of GUIs, the mouse and handheld devices.

Fifth Generation – Present and Beyond: Artificial Intelligence

Fifth generation computing devices, based on artificial intelligence, are still in development, though there are some applications, such as voice recognition, that are being used today. The use of parallel processing and superconductors is helping to make artificial intelligence a reality. Quantum computation and molecular and nanotechnology will radically change the face of computers in years to come. The goal of fifth-generation computing is to develop devices that respond to natural language input and are capable of learning and self-organization.

How to fasten your Computer. (Part – 1)

When you fing your Computer is booting slow.

When you find that your computer is slow after the boot (After you log In).

Great question, and one that I can understand as my PCs also seem to gradually get slower and slower on boot as this, that and the other applications have to check in and get updated definitions, applications, data files…!!! Shorten the time it takes for your desktop to appear when you turn on your PC No matter how fast your PC boots, it’s not fast enough. Here are several options to get you right to your desktop as quickly as possible after startup.

Perform a Boot Defragment:

PULL YOUR BIOS:

When your computer has slow boot, it may have nothing to do with operating system (O/S). There is a Basic Input/Output System known as the BIOS. The BIOS runs at the startup sequence where it configures devices and then boots the operating system. However, if the configuration is messy and has some unclear commands, this will cause a slow boot up. Depending on your mother board manufacturer, you may have the access the BIOS differently.

Turn on your computer, and hold down delete or F2 (Function key).
In the BIOS window, look for the Boot Menu option.
Choose the QUICK BOOT to turn off memory test.
Make sure the hard drive comes first in the BOOT ORDER.
Turn off any logo displays.
Save and Restart your computer.

This is an example of BIOS that will cause a very slow boot up. Follow the advice above to restructure your BIOS to load your configuration a quick as possible.

Disable ON BOARD sound and GRAPHICS

Only do this if you have a third party sound and graphic card already installed.

In the BIOS menu, select Onboard Device or Integrated peripherals.

Disable the onboard chips and turn off unused network adapters.

Save and Restart your Computer.

After you log in to your computer

BOOT MENU Default Settings

If you are using XP or Vista you can access the boot menu by loading your MSCONFIG. During the boot up your computer issues a time out to find new hardware and software is shown. You can short this time to boost your startup speed.

Open your Start menu.

Click on Run.

In the command screen type msconfig.

In the system configuration utility, click either BOOT tab.

In the boot menu, change the default setting for Time Out from 30 to 5 seconds.

Remove Boot Up Passwords.

Having a password lock computer can add to your slow boot up. The operating system must completely halt the boot up to allow you to type in your text based password. Eliminating this boot password option will give you a welcome speed boost.

Click on the Start.

Click on Settings.

Click on Control Panel.

Click on user accounts.

Uncheck User must enter user name passwords.

Click Apply and OK.

This will even speed up your computer after logging in to the system.

Use disk clean up option:

Disk Cleanup–This tool allows you to clean up compressed and unnecessary files collected during Windows operations. Windows has judged these files safe to be deleted. This file can be anything from your temporary internet files to programs no longer in use.

HOW TO Cleanup your Disk:

Click on Start.

Click on Programs.

Click on Accessories.

Click on System Tools.

Click Disk Cleanup.

Under the More Options tab, you can clear data under three categories. This is highly recommended if you want to free up more space for performance speed. With just a few clicks you can learn how to clean up a slow computer in multiple areas.

How to make your internet work faster.

Always run a virus scan on your computer If the program finds viruses on your computer, remove or quarantine them immediately. Also, run a full scan for spyware that may be installed on your computer. If you are certain that the threat is not part of a software program you installed yourself, follow the anti-spyware program’s instructions.

Always remove temp files from your computer:

Click on Start.

Click on run.

In the text bar type temp.

Once you type temp you will get a window as shown in the picture.

Try to delete them all. At times it is not possible to delete the in Normal mode so better go to safe made.

The way to go to safe mode; Restart your computer and keep pressing on F8 (Function Key).

Once you start pressing on F8 (Function key); It will take to a page as shown in the picture.

After you enter Safe Mode it will be easy to delete all the temp files. Even delete %temp%.

Click on Start

click on Run

In the text space type %temp%

After deleting all this temp and %temp%. You need to delete all the cookies. Open Internet Explorer. Go to Tools and Click on Internet Options. As shown in the picture.

After you click on Internet options you will get a screen:

Click on Delete. Once you click on Delete you will get another screen.

Again Click on Delete. You will get another screen.

Now all the cookies, Temporary Internet files, history e.t.c.. will be deleted, which will be seeding you your internet connection.

Now you need to click on setting which is been circled by me.

Bring this 20 to 0 and Click on View files. You will again get a screen of all Temporary files.

Once you click on view files you will get another window.

Try Deleting all this files. Mostly you wouldn’t be possible to delete them in Normal mode so go to safe mode and delete them.

Multiple browser for internet security. The answer lies in using Multiple internet web browsers.

Today we are having lots of great browsers like Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Opera, Safari etc. to name just a few. Every web browser claims to be the best and they are really some great piece of software.

While Firefox is unbeatable when it comes to flexibility and customization.

Internet Explorer has the distinct advantage of being the default web browser of Windows.

Google Chrome is well regarded for its unmatchable brute speed.

While Opera is known for innovating ideas.

So, if so many choices for web browsers are available, Why you should stick for only one. Why not choose a few of them, and use them for different purposes.

For instance, I use Google Chrome for most of my casual browsing, just roaming around here and there, testing new stuff. I use Chrome for it, because at this time I want to quickly browser through the new websites. Chrome is really fast when serving new sites, which have not been visited by you earlier. This is the time, when my computer is most vulnerable.

I use Firefox for the serious stuff related to my blogging. Blogging requires me to have lot of flexibility in my web browser and Firefox is just ideal for that.

And I use Internet Explorer 8, as the browser for accessing my Finance related websites and banks. I use IE, with very tighten security, as I do not need a very rich and entertaining experience, while using my banks’ websites. Security is the prime concern in my mind at that time. And as soon as I am finished with the task, I close IE8, and open the other browser, as per the task I have to do.

And, I feel secured at times with this policy of using multiple internet browsers for ensuring Internet security.

When ever your INTERNET speed is slow you would call your INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER (ISP): He will ask you to get connected to his server to check your speed. For sure it will show you the accurate speed, but you are sure that the speed is slow. In this Session I will teach you how to check your INTERNET SPEED USING THIRD PARTY SERVER.

Be sure to inform you ISP (Internet Service Provider) that you don’t want to connect through there server. Be very precise and tell them that you want to connect through a third party server.

The best third party server, which I have ever come across, is speedtest.net. Just type in speedtest.net in you web browser and a screen will appear as shown bellow.

As I live in India it is showing me the city where I live in India. If you are in other country it will show your country map with your city. Just click on your city. You will get a screen as the bellow picture.

Here you can see that my download speed is 0.54MB, to know you internet speed you need to multiply it with 8. 1 Mb is = 1024 kb so we need to multiply it with 0.54*1024, So its 552.96KBPS. Hence my internet seed is 432KBPS. At times there would be a variation of 15 to 20 %., depending on the traffic.

How to Use a (Television Vision)TV as a Computer Monitor.

The worlds of computers and televisions are integration, so it makes sense to try to run your computer using your television (TV) as a monitor. Most standard definition televisions (Old Televisions) are not going to give you the visual quality of a computer monitor, but can be a suitable alternative or extra monitor. Scalable high definition Televisions may actually provide an even better alternative to your computer monitor. Connecting your computer to your TV requires knowing what your computer is capable of running for video.

We need to Identify our TV’s input connections. Most TVs now days have three basic types of inputs.

Coaxial cable input, the same as your cable box or satellite.
RCA composite input (the yellow, red and white inputs).
S – Video Connector.
Newer televisions might have Component Video, DVI, VGA or HDMI inputs but the ones listed above are more common.

We need to Identify our computer’s outputs.

Now days computer manufacturers are adding TV compatible outputs on their products so it’s easy to have a pc to tv connection when you plug it up. The S-video in particular seems to be popping up on more and more computers, so a PC to TV S video connector might be what you need. You can even buy S-video cables in a store or online. Mostly we will find VGA output that is the regular monitor pulg up to (see more later on VGA cables). The newer multimedia computers will probably have all high definition outputs that connect directly to your HDTV, but for now we will deal with what most people have for both computers and televisions.

Connecting your video card to your TV, though, depends on what inputs your television can accept. If it has multiple input ports, remember that there is a hierarchy in terms of signal quality among the three typical types of connections, which, from lowest to highest, is composite, S-Video, then component video. So opt for the highest quality connection supported by both devices. Many older or more basic televisions may only have a coaxial cable connection. In this case, there are video cards with coax outputs and scan converters that will pass the signal through a coaxial cable directly to your television. Oh, and remember that you’ll also need to connect your sound card’s LINE-OUT connector to the TV for sound.

AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port)

You need have the right the right cables to go from the computer to the TV, since there are several types of RCA (1 or multi-port) and S-Video (4-pin and 7-pin) connectors. One product that I found, the Pro S-Video to 3 RCA cable allows you to connect your desktop or laptop computer’s S-Video to your TV. These adapters are compatible with both S-video 4-pin and 7-pin receptacles and also connect your PC’s stereo audio output to the TV. You can get this cable in any computer store.

S-Video Cable

Don’t hurry and buy any video cards or cables. There are certain limitations of using older CRT televisions as computer displays that can easily render the advantages of size and affordability almost completely negligible. Perhaps the greatest constraint is the relatively low resolution of standard, tube-based televisions. Because of their design to accept, good old-fashioned analog television sets generally cannot display resolutions greater than 640×480. That was barely adequate for a 14-inch monitor ten years ago, so just imagine how it might look on a 32-inch TV screen. Have you ever tried to read those unclear disclaimers at the end of a TV commercial? Viewing your computer’s video signal through a CRT television will not yield the detail and clarity that you would normally expect, although for games and video playback it can produce acceptable results.

Never give up on the idea of connecting your computer to a big screen TV because there is a better alternative.

HDTV (High Definition Television) to the Rescue.

With the growing popularity of high definition television, users are presented with a more enticing alternative, one where quality and versatility need not be sacrificed. Even the lower echelons of High Definition televisions offer a multitude of both analog and digital video input connections. And many come equipped with VGA and DVI inputs, allowing for direct connections to your computer’s video output. Video card manufacturers have quickly responded to the demand for Hingh Definition television by including dual DVI outputs to support more than one display, as well as HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) connections for uncompressed digital video and audio transmission.

The only drawback of using high definition television is obviously the cost. Used exclusively as a computer monitor, it is difficult to justify such a discouraging expense. But if you’ve already got a large high definition television and you can’t wait to see what a Windows or Mac display looks like on a 50-inch screen.

.flv (Video) would play only in RealPlayer or VLC (Video Card LAN), so if you have .flv we need to have RealPayer or VLC on our computer to play those files.

.rm (audio) would play only in RealPlayer or VLC (Video Card LAN), so if you have .flv we need to have RealPayer or VLC on our computer to play those files.

.mp3 (audio) is more audible in Winamp.

Different Types of Computer Monitors

There are basically two kinds of computer monitors in the world. Do you know what kind of monitor you are looking at? There are the old fashioned bulky (TV like) monitors and the newer, slim flat panel monitors. Here is a basic description of the differences:

CRT Monitor

CRT Monitor: Cathode Ray Tube: similar to a television in which rays of electrons are beamed onto a phosphorescent screen to produce images. CRT is Often used as a generic term for a computer monitor. That just means that the tube screen is flat instead of curved like a an older TV set screen.

Flat Panel Monitor

Flat Panel Monitor: You could think of them as the final evolution of the old LCD calculator screen that impressed everyone so much back in the 1970’s. There have been lots of amazing technology developments along the way but the basic idea is the same. When computers first came out you didn't have a choice on what kind of monitor you got. You got that bulky CRT that was huge and cumbersome to move if you wanted to switch around your computer desk.

This isn't true anymore; with all the technological advances you have choices now. So let's look at the differences. Of course you have the CRT, but now you have the LCD Monitors available to you. There are huge differences between the LCD and a CRT. LCD's have become quite advanced, and the technology offers you pretty much the same quality of picture as a CRT, but still many people still want the CRT monitor. CRT's of course are bigger and bulkier than an LCD monitor, they also consume more power and you get that annoying screen flicker. But LCD's are more expensive than a CRT. They also have the problem of viewing from angles, and they usually have less accurate color replication.

Each monitor as you can see above has its advantages and disadvantages. We are going to do a closer comparison of the CRT monitor and LCD monitor to hopefully help you out with your purchase.

CRT monitors were the only choice that people had for many years, the CRT stands for Cathode Ray Tube, and it's been in use for over 100 years. It's what is found in most TV's and computer monitors. How it works is it moves an electron beam back and forth across the back of the TV screen or Monitor screen. When it moves across the screen it lights up dots on the inside of the tube, thus it illuminates the active parts of the screen. By doing this several times it will complete the screen image.

LCD monitors stand for Liquid crystal display. This type of technology can also be found in those digital watches and of course computer monitors. LCD's use two sheets of polarizing material with liquid crystal between them, when an electronic current passes through the liquid the crystals will align so that light will not pass through them. With several passes the screen image will be complete.

Pro's and Con's of each monitor. Resolution or how sharp your picture will look is very flexible on a CRT. In fact the newer models offer up to 1600 x 1200 displays. The LCD's resolution is fixed, it can be changed, but if you do so you will notice the performance will drop.

Both of the newer models of both monitors will give you a bright color display that is vibrant. LCD's though fall short in the color range. As far as sharpness of the image, if you are running your LCD at it's normal setting the picture will be perfectly sharp, while the CRT you will notice flaws in.

When viewing a CRT monitor you can look at it from any angle with no problem, however your LCD monitors you will notice the picture will fade or disappear.

As stated before with the CRT you may have that screen flicker, but with today's graphic cards that may be fixed almost completely. LCD's do not have this problem so a screen flickers!

Screen size of a CRT you will find most people buying 17" displays. With this you get around 16.1 inches of true display image. While with a LCD monitor if you buy a 17" screen you will have 17" of true viewing. The physical size of the two monitors is in no way even close. A CRT is heavier and bulky, while a LCD is much less weight and flat.

The big difference though is going to be the price, where the LCD wins in size it will cost you much more in price. CRT's although bulky will be much cheaper to purchase. Here are a few examples. An Acer 15" LCD will run you $195, which is a very good price, now a 17" CRT from Acer is $169. Not much of a difference but a little choice. Another example is Samsung 17" CRT for $125 compared to a Samsung 17" LCD at $480. Now that choice you see a huge difference in the price.

What you need to keep in mind is how much you want to spend and what kind of monitor you like the best. Just use this as a guide for some answers.

CRT vs. LCD - The Pros and Cons of Each

Resolution & Viewing Quality

Resolution on a CRT is flexible and a newer model will provide you with viewing resolutions of up to 1600 by 1200 and higher, whereas on an LCD the resolution is fixed within each monitor (called a native resolution). The resolution on an LCD can be changed, but if you're running it at a resolution other than its native resolution you will notice a drop in performance or quality.

Both types of monitors (newer models) provide bright and vibrant color display. However, LCDs cannot display the maximum color range that a CRT can. In terms of image sharpness, when an LCD is running at its native resolution the picture quality is perfectly sharp. On a CRT the sharpness of the picture can be blemished by soft edges or a flawed focus.

A CRT monitor can be viewed from almost any angle, but with an LCD this is often a problem. When you use an LCD, your view changes as you move different angles and distances away from the monitor. At some odd angles, you may notice the picture fade, and possibly look as if it will disappear from view.

Refresh Rate

Some users of a CRT may notice a bit of an annoying flicker, which is an inherent trait based on a CRTs physical components. Today's graphics cards, however, can provide a high refresh rate signal to the CRT to get rid of this otherwise annoying problem. LCDs are flicker-free and as such the refresh rate isn't an important issue with LCDs.

Dot Pitch

Dot pitch refers to the space between the pixels that make up the images on your screen, and is measured in millimeters. The less space between pixels, the better the image quality. On either type of monitor, smaller dot pitch is better and you're going to want to look at something in the 0.26 mm dot pitch or smaller range.

Screen (viewable) Size

Most people today tend to look at a 17-inch CRT or bigger monitor. When you purchase a 17-inch CRT monitor, you usually get 16.1 inches or a bit more of actual viewing area, depending on the brand and manufacturer of a specific CRT. The difference between the "monitor size" and the "view area" is due to the large bulky frame of a CRT. If you purchase a 17" LCD monitor, you actually get a full 17" viewable area, or very close to a 17".

Physical Size

There is no denying that an LCD wins in terms of its physical size and the space it needs. CRT monitors are big, bulky and heavy. They are not a good choice if you're working with limited desk space, or need to move the monitor around (for some odd reason) between computers. An LCD on the other hand is small, compact and lightweight. LCDs are thin, take up far less space and are easy to move around. An average 17-inch CRT monitor could be upwards of 40 pounds, while a 17&-inch LCD would weigh in at around 15 pounds.

Price

As an individual one-time purchase an LCD monitor is going to be more expensive. Throughout a lifetime, however, LCDs are cheaper as they are known to have a longer lifespan and also a lower power consumption. The cost of both technologies have come down over the past few years, and LCDs are reaching a point where smaller monitors are within many consumers' price range. You will pay more for a 17" LCD compared to a 17" CRT, but since the CRT's actual viewing size is smaller, it does bring the question of price back into proportion. Today, fewer CRT monitors are manufactured as the price on LCDs lowers and they become mainstream.

Hibernate vs Stand By

In Windows XP operating system, there are two different power saving or sleep options available; the Hibernate and Stand By modes. Both of these features provide the system user convenience, not only, by granting less power consumption but by also making the computer swift in recovering previous computer activity.

Stand By mode is the customary type of sleep mode. If you select it, you will reduce the computer’s power consumption to almost zero. The power to the monitor, hard drive, and other peripheral devices is cut, leaving only enough power to maintain the on state of the computerí’ memory ñ which is the RAM. The RAM saves all the data such as applications used, opened files, and ongoing documents.

In Stand By, the computer is in extremely low power mode. This power saving feature is very useful in portable computing devices such as laptops and notebooks. A big drawback however with Stand By is that you risk losing data when the power is cut for some reason. The remedy for that is to save your documents and other data before going on Stand By or opt for the other power saving option ñ the Hibernate mode.

Selecting the Hibernate mode, will save an image of the desktop, with all the open windows, activated applications, and files. The data will be saved on the hard disk then your computer will turn off just as if you have shut it down. No power is used ñ the display, monitor, devices, and RAM are in completely off state. Powering on from Hibernation will recover your last computer activity with all of your windows, applications, and files open.

Stand By mode will restart and recover faster while the more secure Hibernate mode will considerably ‘wake up’ slower. By default, Stand By is readily available to be activated as a button is visible when you try to shut down or restart your computer. Hibernate button is rather hidden. When using the Fast User Switching View in XP, you need to press and hold down the SHIFT key to change the Stand By button to Hibernate.

Summary:

In Stand By mode, the computer will still use power to save data in memory while in Hibernate mode, power is completely shut off but only before saving data in the hard disk.

Hibernate mode will save more power than Stand By mode.

Restarting from Stand By mode is much faster than from Hibernate mode.

When power is lost while in Stand By mode, all data in memory is lost while Hibernate mode,

since it is definitely saved prior to shut down, lost power is inconsequential.

Stand By uses the RAM to save data while Hibernate saves an image into the hard disk.

Hibernate button is not always visible particularly in Fast User Switching view while the

StandBy button is visible by default.

With stand By: Your machine recovers quickly as your data is stored in RAM. The slower part is waking up the peripherals. Although your machine is in "standby" the power has been cut to items such as your hard drive and monitor. You're running your machine in a very low power mode, but it is still on. This mode can be useful if you're on a notebook and need to conserve your battery while you step away.

With Hibernate: The big difference is that your PC has shut down and is not pulling power. Another difference is that your data is saved to your hard disk and not RAM. This makes it a safer, but slower option for shut down and resume.

In Vista:

Both commands provide a easy and quick way to leave your computer in existing last state and come back to work on it at exactly the same state later without waiting too long to system to restore itself. However, fundamentally there are significant different between them that allows users to easily choose whether they should use Standby or Hibernate.

How to Enable and Turn On Hybrid Sleep in Vista:
Click on Start button, then go to Control Panel.

Click on System and Maintenance link, then click on Power Options to run the applet. Under the “Select a power plan” page, and the “Preferred plans” section,

click on Change plan settings under the active selected power plan, i.e. the one which are ticked.

On the “Change settings for the plan” page, click on Change advanced power settings.

On the “Advanced settings” tab of “Power Options”, expand Sleep tree, then expand Allow hybrid sleep subtree.

Depending on your computer power configuration, you will see different options available:

For desktop computer relying on AC power, select On from the drop-down list of “Settings” option.

For notebook and laptop computer or probably those on UPS, there are 2 settings available – “On battery” and “Plugged in”. Select On from the drop-down list as the value for both options.

7. Click on bottom “OK” button when done.
8. Click “Save changes” if the button is not grayed out.

How to Turn On and Enable Hibernate in Windows 7:

1. Open an elevated Command Prompt with administrator rights by typing Cmd in Start Search, and then hit Ctrl + Shift + Enter keyboard shortcut.

Or, select Run as Administrator from the Cmd in search results.

2. Type the following command, and press Enter:

powercfg /hibernate on

Because of some reason Hibernate is still not available, try to disable Hybrid Sleep in Windows 7 with the following steps:

Go to Control Panel -> System and Security -> Power Options.

Click on Change plan settings link of the active power plan.

Click on Change advanced power settings link.

Expand the Sleep tree.

In the drop down box of Allow Hybrid Sleep, select Off as new setting to disable and turn off Hybrid Sleep.

How to Turn Off and Disable Hibernate in Windows 7:

Open an elevated Command Prompt with administrator rights by typing Cmd in Start Search, and then hit Ctrl + Shift + Enter keyboard shortcut.

Or, select Run as Administrator from the Cmd in search results.

Type the following command, and hit Enter:

powercfg /hibernate off

How to enable hibernate in XP

Click on start.

Click on settings.

Click on Control Panel.

Click on power options.

And check the one, which I have circled.

when you turnoff Your computer press and hold shit (This will enable Hibernate) as shown in the below picture.
