Many career planning books concentrate on the easier questions,,numbers 2 and 3. However, I will concentrate on the first question — ‘Who am I?’ — with Sections B and C of this book serving to back up this fundamental aspect. This is because I believe that once you can answer

‘Who am I?’, the answers to the other two questions become much clearer.

The confidence (confidence is a crucially important characteristic for everyone) gained by going through the analysis phase answering ‘Who am I?’ allows the exploration phase (Where am I going?) and the consolidation phase (How am I going to get there?) to happen naturally.

Other books, such as ‘The Career Repair Kit’ (publication September 2010) can help you with the more logical process of finding a job. This book helps you balance the logical process of finding a job with the emotional need to find something that gives you energy, something that you really love doing.

Rather than say anymore if you have 15 minutes free why don’t you take part in an exercise that will help you clarify this important first step?

Get a large sheet of paper…or stick 4 pieces of A4 paper together…and tune into this demonstration of how to look at yourself and complete the ‘Good at/Enjoy doing Grid’…

Once you have gone through it…think about your own examples in each of the 4 quadrants…what talents (or understrengths!) go where?

Consider the words and phrases you have put in each quadrant… if each phrase was in every quadrant…why specifically is it in the ‘Good at/Enjoy doing’ one?

What is it about that talent in terms of how you use it ….and the context within which you use it?

This way you will identify what are your unique talents….

The key is to see the themes that emerge in terms of …the talents you are using…how you use them… and in which situations… where you are energized and feel positive about yourself.
