<p>There is an African proverb that says it takes a village to raise a child.  The “Village” of New Milford is teaming up to provide lunch and supplemental week-end nutrition to youth in need this summer.</p>
<p>New Milford schools have a 30% free and reduced lunch rate, with another 22% of families slightly over the threshold, but still in need.  Many of these family’s students receive meals during the school year, but not during the summer. This forces already tight food budgets to be stretched further to provide summer meals for their children.  Add to that traditionally declining food pantry donations during the summer and you’ll understand why summer is deemed “the hungriest time of the year.”<br />

The New Milford Mayor’s Office, the New Milford Board of Education and New Milford Public Schools, United Way of Greater New Milford, Loaves and Fishes, New Milford Social Services, New Milford Youth Agency, New Milford Hospital, the Community Culinary School, the New Milford Clergy Association, MVP-SOS, and the Women&#8217;s Club of Greater New Milford are proud to announce the New Milford Summer Lunch Bunch Program.  There are several components to the program including:</p>
<ul>
<li>Beginning Monday, July 2nd and running through Tuesday, August 29th, families in need can pick up bagged lunches for their children every weekday morning from 7:00-9:00 am at the New Milford Public Schools Lillis Administration Building &#8211; 50 East Street, New Milford, CT.</li>
<li>Every Friday, a weekend food pack will be given to families as well as provided to families in need at local daycares and summer camps.​</li>
<li>The New Milford Board of Education will be providing two free family meal opportunities. Watch for additional details.</li>

<p>A steady drizzle failed to dampen the spirits of a single soul on Halloween in downtown New Milford.</p>
<p>And how could it?</p>
<p><a href="https://www.newmilfordspectrum.com/?controllerName=search&amp;action=search&amp;channel=news&amp;search=1&amp;inlineLink=1&amp;query=%22New+Milford+Parks+%26+Recreation%22">New Milford Parks &amp; Recreation</a> again hosted its popular Halloween Trunk or Treat, a trick-or-treating event, Oct. 31 along the Village Green on Main Street.</p>
<p>The event was offered for a third straight year as an alternative to traditional neighborhood trick-or-treating.</p>
<p>Residents were invited to decorate their vehicles and hand out candy to children, and many dozens of area folks responded to the call.</p>
<p>That made it downright easy for thousands of children and their families to stroll Main Street, comparing costumes and exchanging friendly smiles, all the while hauling in the tasty treats.</p>
<p>Those who remembered were thoughtful to donate a bag of candy to Parks &amp; Recreation for redistribution that evening.</p>
<p>Adding color to the two-hour event was the arrival of the &#8220;Thriller&#8221; flash mob on the Green. The mob comprised dozens of teens (and somewhat older) folks dressed as zombies.</p>

<p>&#8220;Municipalities throughout the state and New England may soon come to Sherman as a learning destination when building in their towns. The inspiration could be a &#8220;green&#8221; solution reached recently for creation of a 36-vehicle parking area included in the Sherman Library expansion plans. Civil engineer Paul Szymanski of Arthur H. Howland &amp; Associates PE, which has undertaken the engineering work for the expansion, and Sherman town engineer Joseph Zareki collaborated on the project.</p>
<p>The two men took trips to the University of New Hampshire and the University of Connecticut in Storrs to examine &#8220;porous asphalt&#8221; surfaces used in parking areas at both schools. This porous asphalt is created without the sand component of the more commonly used non-porous asphalt product found in parking lots and roadways, Mr. Szymanski explained. &#8220;Water can filter through it, infiltrating into the ground beneath,&#8221; Mr. Szymanski said. &#8220;It&#8217;s better for the environment&#8221; as there is no standing water/oil build up in the lot for environmentally damaging runoff into culverts.</p>
<p>&#8220;We were trying to find a creative solution for a tight site. They showed us low-impact site development techniques at the two universities,&#8221; he said. Library Building Committee chairman Clay Cope is excited about this aspect of the project. He noted Mr. Szymanski is donating a machine that would vacuums sand and debris from the parking lot so as little sediment as possible would go into catch basins. &#8220;We were thrilled that they could come up with an innovative green solution,&#8221; Mr. Cope said.</p>
<p>A rain garden will be incorporated at the Sherman Library site, a swale with plantings that soak up rainwater as it runs from the parking lot. A grass line swale would also be included, with grass plantings to encourage infiltration of storm water runoff, Mr. Szymanski explained. The grass line swale would also provide a site for snow to be piled as it is plowed off the parking lot. The lot would sit tightly against Saw Mill Road. A sidewalk along the lot would allow for safe pedestrian traffic.</p>
<p>&#8220;We see other towns&#8217; commissions and boards coming to Sherman to see this cutting edge storm water technology,&#8221; Mr. Szymanski said. &#8220;Sherman has made a step toward being a learning site for the region.&#8221;&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;Famous fashion designer Diane Von Furstenberg has won permission to spend eternity at her beloved Cloudwalk Farm estate in Merryall, surrounded by red birches and a nearby stream.  The Zoning Commission on Tuesday night voted unanimously to grant the Belgian-born resident a special permit for a 20-plot family cemetery encircled with a stone meditation garden on a 46.5-acre open property she owns on West Meetinghouse Road. The land is just north of an additional 50 acres where her home is located on abutting Aspetuck Ridge Road. The entire property is known as Cloudwalk Farm.</p>
<p>The less than half-acre garden and cemetery will be on the southern end of the property, hidden by flowering trees and other landscaping. The only access will be from an existing farm road that is also a part of Von Furstenberg&#8217;s private property.  One of the benefits, the commission noted, with this proposal is that it will protect Von Furstenberg&#8217;s property so that it remains in a natural state rather than being developed.</p>
<p>Arthur H. Howland &amp; Associates representative Kathy Castagnetta said the formal layout has been completed for the private cemetery and it will be arranged in a semi-circle with a wall no higher than 2.6 feet with a total circumference of about 70 feet. The area will be landscaped with flowering trees and the garden will include stone seating and a bench.  Castagnetta, a former town Zoning Enforcement officer, said the process all &#8220;went very smoothly.&#8217;  She said private cemeteries are not an anomaly, and for some families are a way to protect their land.  &#8220;The big plus for this property is that it will be kept in its natural state, and that is very appropriate to the area,&#8221; Castagnetta said.</p>
<p>For Von Furstenberg, the property has been a personal treasure and according to news articles dating back to 1993 she has long contemplated the New Milford property as her preferred place of eternal rest.  &#8220;I have lived in New Milford for 35 years and love that place more than anywhere in the world,&#8221; said the world-traveling designer in a recent e-mail from Europe. &#8220;I would like to be there forever, which is why I would like to be buried there.&#8221;&#8221;</p>
