Howth Coast Guard were tasked last night at 21.12 to search Howth Harbour for a UK based 22ft yacht. HM Coastguard in the UK were concerned for it as they had no contact from it recently and it was completing a round Ireland trip. Last contact was in Carlingford Lough and it was heading South. Many of the CG teams on the East coast were asked for assistance.

The harbour area was searched but nothing was found. MRCC Dublin were informed and the team stood down.

Incident 22/08

At 22.30 last night MRCC tasked Howth CG to a 999 report of a boat drifting on the South side of Howth hill at Red Rock. Volunteers went to the scene and saw a small boat which appeared to be anchored just off the shore East of the Martello tower at Sutton. This was an unusual place to moor especially as there were Easterly winds and a rolling sea. Contact could not be made with the boat from shore but it was confirmed it was anchored and the team stood by for 30 minutes to monitor the drift if any. They were happy it was not moving and also that this boat matched the description of the vessel the team were looking for earlier. The team stood down at 00.10 and returned to base.

At 08.00 this morning a volunteer went down to the scene and made contact with the person on board and confirmed all was ok. Dublin MRCC spoke to the sailor by phone, took details of intentions and informed the UK Coastguard that the vessel had been found and that all was well.

Incident 23/08

As one of the volunteers was leaving the station in Howth last night after the search he noticed a fire aboard a trawler in the servicing area behind the West pier. It was on a vessel being decommissioned and broken up. A 999 call was made to Dublin Fire Brigade and within minutes two fire tenders arrived and dealt with what was in itself a bad fire but could have been alot worse as the yard has many boats undergoing refitting and servicing.

Howth CG were tasked at 11.12 this morning to a 999 report of a small inflatable dinghy with one person on board being swept out to sea at Portmarnock beach. Howth ILB was also tasked and was on the way to assist. Four volunteers quickly went to the beach. On arrival at the beach the team contacted the 999 caller and found that one male was on board the small dinghy. Howth ILB reacted quickly and recovered the male quite a long way offshore avoiding what could have become a more serious incident. On recovery the male was found to be in a small inflatable beach dinghy, to have only one oar, no lifejacket and was a bad swimmer. The inflatable boat was totally unsuitable for the sea and should not have been used for this purpose. Thankfully the fast response of Howth ILB, the good weather and the calm sea conditions meant a good outcome for the casualty. Howth were stood down at 11.40.

On Friday night at 2235 Howth CG were tasked by MRCC Dublin following a report of somebody in the water shouting for help, at the wooden bridge in Clontarf. A member of the team went to the bridge and found a group of youths there. Two of them were very wet and had been in the water. Two passers by explained that the youths had tried to get across the estuary from the sea scout den and had got into difficulty. They had thrown a life buoy to them and pulled them out. It was obvious that alcohol was a factor in their decision to try and cross the estuary. A Garda patrol car arrived and the youths quickly dispersed.

The team was stood down at 2255.

Due to a backoffice software update we have been unable to update our callout log recently. Apologies so here are the the two we missed.

At 16.22 on Sunday 25th while attending the Blessing of the Boats Ceremony at Clontarf Yacht Club Howth Coast Guard were tasked to the Bull wall where MRCC Dublin had received a 999 call of a kitesurfer in trouble. The team went to the scene along with two ribs with CG personnel on board. They found a kitesurfer who had lost his board and had been blown across the rocky breakwater at the end of the wall. The team stood by until the kitesurfer had recovered himself to the steps on the wall.

Incident 17/08

At 23.55 on Sunday 25th Howth were tasked to Donabate beach to investigate unusual lights off the shore called in by a member of the public. A working vessel was moored two miles off shore but could not be contacted by Dublin Coast Guard radio. The volunteer observed the vessel but did not think that there was any cause for concern. Howth were stood down at 00.33.
