The french press is a favored coffee maker by many, but it can be one of the messiest to clean. Although it is recommended that you only lightly clean your press after every use, it’s helpful to wash it in the dishwasher every now and then.

Washing your fresh press in the dishwasher will help you remove the grimy buildup that is caused by the coffee oils over time. It is hard to get rid of these oils by just rinsing your press, so the force of the dishwasher is helpful in removing the buildup and getting your french press back to a sparkly clean state.

Usually all of the components of a french press are dishwasher safe, but make sure to take the pieces apart before you put them in.

Can I Avoid Sludge (grid) in My French Press?

Spoiler: The sludge that you see at the bottom of your french press coffee is common and totally expected. But sometimes, people try to avoid this. If you’re trying to avoid sludge in your french press, read our article about how.

More

The french press is known for its robust, bold flavor. Part of the way we get this great flavor from using a french press is through the sludge created by the hot water, coffee grounds, and natural coffee oils.

Because we use a plunger and filter method for a french press, the sludge is left behind at the bottom of your cup. This sludge actually contains natural coffee oils that add nutrients and flavor to your coffee.

But if you’re wanting to avoid sludge in your french press coffee, there are a few ways to do it.

Use the Right Grind

It is important that you use a coarse, consistent grind. If you’re seeing too much sludge in your coffee, it could be that your grounds are too fine, or you’re coffee grinder isn’t consistent. Try coarsening up your grind or investing in a more consistent burr grinder.

Blade grinders are inexpensive, but they produce grounds that aren’t level with one another. A burr grinder, like the Baratza Encore or the Lido 3 Hand Grinder, is designed to consistently grind coffee so that you’ll have grounds of the same consistency every time.

A Second Filter Basket

A standard french press comes with one filter, but a french press like the Espro Press or Frieling French Press comes with an extra filter basket. This double filter system helps prevent the grounds from getting through, and the basket catches the sludge.

If you decide that you want to try your french press without the sludge, try these steps that we listed above. If you want to purchase one of our Espro Press french presses or a burr coffee grinder, check out our store.

But if you’ve never done it before, how do you know the best way to clean your french press?

More

You’re now a french press coffee user. You’ve found your perfect french press, your trusted coffee grinder, and your favorite coffee beans.

You’ve been using your french press every morning and it’s changed the way you enjoy coffee. But you’ve started to notice some grimy substances along the lining of your french press and aren’t sure the best way to clean your french press without ruining it?

Daily Vs. Deep

You'll want to lightly clean your french press after every use using either warm water, a little soap, baking soda, or vinegar. After multiple uses, or when your press starts to look dirty or grimy, you can deep clean by taking it apart and cleaning every piece.

Using Soap and Warm Water (after each use)

You can use just warm water or warm water and soap every day as long as you're not using a large amount, and you're using very gently dish soap.

Over time, soap can wear and tear on your french press, so it is important to use a gentle soap and to not use too much every time you want to wash your press.

The pros of using soap are that it's easy and gently on the press, and the cons are that it doesn't always remove the grime build up.

Deep Clean by Espro

Espro makes a cleaning powder product called Deep Clean. This powder is used every couple of uses, or as you see grime build up on your french press, to deep clean your french press filters.

It's easy to use and only $19.99. Shop Espro Deep Clean here ».

Baking Soda

Baking soda is a great way to clean your french press. Just add water to the baking soda and scrub lightly.

Again, you don’t want to do this every time you use your coffee maker. If you make coffee with your french press every day, try using baking soda just every few weeks to remove grime and add some sparkle.

The pros are that baking soda is inexpensive and odorless, but the cons are that it takes a little bit more time and effort to use.

Vinegar

Vinegar is a natural, safe disinfectant. Mixed with warm water, it’s a great tool for deep cleaning surfaces. You can use white vinegar or apple cider vinegar, but apple cider has a slightly less intense odor.

The pros of vinegar are that it's inexpensive and powerful, but the cons are that the smell is hard to get rid of sometimes.

Cleaning your french press really is a simple process, regardless of which method you choose! Try any of the above ways of cleaning, or purchase the Espro Deep Clean for your filters to get a shiny, good-as-new french press coffee maker.

Sometimes French Press coffee makers are just too big. If you live alone, you may find that you waste coffee because you’re only drinking enough for one person, and a lot of coffee makers come in larger sizes.

We put together a list of the 4 best french presses for a single person so you won’t waste your time or money.

Frieling French Press Coffee Maker (8, 17 or 23 oz.)

Frieling’s beautiful stainless steel french presses are perfect for single person coffee makers.

Their design is a favorite among our entire staff and is offered in a size as small as 8 oz and as big as 44 oz.

We recommend the 8, 17, or 23 ounce french press for making one to two cups of coffee a day.

Bodum Chambord French Press (17 oz.)

Bodum French Presses are always a favorite among our members, and they offer a 4-cup french press coffee maker for those of you who want to make just a couple of cups in the morning.

The Bodum Chambord also comes in an 8-cup option.

Aeropress Coffee Maker (8 oz.)

The Aeropress is probably the easiest brewer for single users. It is small and compact, so as well as being good for making a small amount of coffee, it’s also great for travel!

An Aeropress can brew up to 8 oz of coffee, which can be used as a concentrate and stretched with water or milk.

Clever Dripper (16 oz.)

The Clever Dripper is a pourover style cone dripper that is fundamentally different than a french press.

This can be confusing when you're trying to decide what to buy, and you might be asking yourself about what sizes a french press comes in?
More

If you're shopping online for a french press coffee maker, you'll find a variety of different sizes and measurements for each brand of french press. But what sizes do french press coffee makers come in, anyway? Although some companies may sell extra small or extra large french presses, for the most part the sizes are usually the same. Companies usually offer these sizes:

-3 cups (0.35 liters)

-4 cups (0.5 liters)

-8 cups (1 liter)

-12 cups (1.5 liters)

It is important to remember when purchasing a french press that companies measure cups that are smaller than a mug you might use to drink from. Almost all companies count a "cup" as 4 oz instead of 8. This means that when you're drinking coffee out of your favorite mug, you're probably drinking about 2 cups of coffee according to coffee companies. So when you're thinking about what sizes a french press coffee maker comes in, remember this important detail!

If you're shopping for a french press coffee maker, you can find a variety of sizes and prices here.

When you purchase a french press from us, you'll also receive a free wooden stirrer and one year of insurance for accidental breaks.

Did you know that your french press coffee maker can make more than just hot coffee? If you’re tired of hot coffee, maybe it’s time to try cold brew.

Cold brew is a smooth, satisfying version of iced coffee (can be served hot as well), and it's simple to learn how to make cold brew in your french press coffee maker.

Start with 1 cup of coarsely ground coffee and 5 cups of water (in volume not weight). NOTE: To make Cold Brew Coffee Concentrate use 1:3 ratio.

Pour ground coffee into your 8-cup (34 oz.) French Press

Pour in cold (room temperature) water

Use a spoon to help soak the coffee and water, but don’t stir

Place the french press plunger on top and let coffee sit for 12-24 hours

Once the time has passed, press the plunger down to the bottom

Pour your coffee over ice and enjoy alone or with your favorite types of milk and sweeteners!

We hope these instructions help you feel comfortable enough to try making your first cup of cold brew in your french press coffee maker.

If you don’t get it exactly right the first time, try altering the amount of coffee you use and how long you let the coffee brew. Keep trying until you find your personal favorite.
