3. Turn the guitar over and check its heel. There should be no cracks or gaps between the guitar’s heel and neck.

4. Check the guitar’s string height by pressing down on the first, second, and third fret. You should be able to do so with minimal effort. Come to the 12th fret and press down. The distance from the top of fret to the bottom of the string should be no more than three times. If it is five times, the guitar may have a warped neck or too high of a bridge.

A. Guitar Chords A, B, C, D, E, F and G.

B. Guitar Chords Sharp or Flat : In between above mentioned Guitar Chords there are Sharp and Flat Guitar Notes are available hence Sharp Guitar Chords and Flat Guitar Chords are situated in between these. Sharp Guitar Chords have suffix ‘#’ and Flat Chords includes suffix ‘b’. e.g. A# or Bb, C# or Db, D# or Eb, F# or Gb, G# or Ab.

Understand suffix used with the F chord:

Hope you already know the meaning of suffix with the chord name, I am just briefing them below,

‘m’ in F Chord: Here ‘m’ represents ‘Minor’ so this is an F Minor chord, general behavior of Minor chord is they gives Sad Felling when played and also there is a different formula used to build Major chords and Minor chords.

Maj7 in F chord: Here ‘maj’ represents ‘major’, generally we don’t use any suffix for major chords but here we will be discussing Fmaj7 chord that is why I have used ‘maj’ suffix with F7 chord.

Sus4 in F chord: Here ‘sus’ represents ‘suspended’ and ‘4’ represents its build. Suspended chords are very popular and frequently played in pop music. ‘4’ in sus4 represents that we are going to replace 3^rd Guitar Note with the 4^th Guitar Note of the scale.

There is one more variation of suspended chord which is sus2 chord (suspended 2 chord), sus2 chord is derived by replacing 3^rd Guitar chord Note with the 2^nd chord Note.

‘5’ in F Chord: Here ‘5’ represents the ‘Power chord’. F5 chord is also known as F Power Chord.

F Chord Guitar Variations:

1. F Chord Guitar with complete barre:

This is the first F chord we are going to learn and this is the correct and complete version of F chord Guitar.

How to Play F Chord with complete Barre:

To play this variation of F chord first of all we should know How to put Bar on Guitar. We are using Index finger to put bar on the required fret.

If you are playing bar chord for the first time or if you are facing any trouble while playing it, I have just brief 2 points to help you to get correct bar position.

Points to remember on How to put bar on Guitar:

1. Instead of using fleshy part of index finger we should use press the string using left side of the index finger which is hard enough to put the bar.

2. We should try to place bar just before and near to the fret separator so that there should not be Buzz or muted sound. This is the best place as it locks all the string with the fret just next to index finger.

Put your ring finger on the 5^th string 3^rd fret, put smaller finger on the 4^th string 3^rd fret and your middle finger on 3^rd string 2^nd fret and place bar on the 1^st fret to play F chord with complete bar on Guitar. You need to put bar starts from 1^st string till 6^th string.

2. F Chord Guitar with half barre:

Well this is the alternate pattern to pick standard F chord shape; this is actually derived for beginners. This F chord pattern can also be considered as Open F chord.

How to Play F Chord with half Barre:

Position of 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd finger will be same but the only difference is that you don’t need to put a complete bar using index finger. In this F chord patter your index finger place bar on 1^st and 2^nd strings only.

Put your ring finger on the 5^th string 3^rd fret, put smaller finger on the 4^th string 3^rd fret and your middle finger on 3^rd string 2^nd fret and place bar on 1^st and 2^nd string on 1^st fret to play F chord to play this F chord Guitar variation.

3. F7 Chord Guitar:

This is the 3^rd F chord Guitar variation and again comes with the bar. To play F7 chord you just need to shift your smaller finger from 4^th string 3^rd fret to 2^nd string 4^th fret rest is same as F chord complete bar pattern.

How to Play F7 Chord:

Put your ring finger on the 5^th string 3^rd fret, put smaller finger on the 2^nd string 4^th fret and your middle finger on 3^rd string 2^nd fret and place bar on 1^st and 2^nd string on 1^st fret to play F chord to play this F7 chord Guitar variation.

4. Fm Chord Guitar:

Both standard F major chord and Fm chord (F minor chord) are the most famous chords in F chord group. The only difference in between these two chords is F major chords gives happy feeling when played and Fm chord gives Sad feeling when played.

Only difference in their pattern is you just need to remove your middle finger from F major chord to play Fm chord on Guitar.

How to Play Fm Chord:

Put your ring finger on the 5^th string 3^rd fret, put smaller finger on the 4^th string 3^rd fret and place bar on the 1^st fret to play this Fm chord Guitar variation. You need to put bar starts from 1^st string till 6^th string.

5. Fm7 Chord Guitar:

Fm7 Chord is F minor 7 chord, this Fm7 chord pattern is quite similar to the F7 chord. In Fm7 chord you don’t need to put your middle finger on the fretboard. Rest is same as F7 chord.

How to Play Fm7 Chord:

Put your ring finger on the 5^th string 3^rd fret, put smaller finger on the 2^nd string 4^th fret and place bar on 1^st and 2^nd string on 1^st fret to play F chord to play this F7 chord Guitar variation.

6. Fmaj7 Chord Guitar:

Fmaj7 chord sound little different among all other F chord guitar variation and actually gives happy feeling when played when you will play all these chords one by one you will also realize the same. While playing Fmaj 7 chord you need to mute 5^th string from your index finger.

How to Play Fmaj7 Chord:

Put your ring finger on the 3^rd string 2^nd fret, put smaller finger on 4^th string 3^rd fret, put middle finger on 2^nd string 1^st fret and put index finger on 6^th string 1^st fret to play Fmaj7 chord.

7. Fsus4 Chord Guitar:

Fsus4 chord in basically F suspended 4 chord. This is again bar shape F chord.

How to Play Fsus4 Chord:

Put your ring finger on the 4^th string 3^rd fret, put smaller finger on 3^rd string 3^rd fret and put a bar on 1^st fret with the help of index finger to play Fsus4 chord.

8. F7sus4 Chord Guitar:

F7sus4 chord build consists of both F7 chord and Fsus4 chord characteristics.

How to Play F7sus4 Chord:

Put your ring finger on the 4^th string 3^rd fret, put smaller finger on 2^nd string 3^rd fret and put a bar on 1^st fret with the help of index finger to play F7sus4 chord.

9. F5 Chord or F Power Chord:

F5 Chord is the last F chord pattern we are going to discuss in this post. F5 chord is also known as F Power chord.

F5 chord can be played based on your interest and the requirement of song and feel. You can play F5 chord or F power chord by just focusing on low three strings on guitar.

How to Play F5 Chord:

To get this F chord position you need to put your index finger on the 6^th string 1^st fret, put your ring finger on 5^th string 3^rd fret and your pinky finger on the 4^th string 3^rd fret to play F5 chord on Guitar.

Remember to mute higher 3 strings i.e. G string, B string and higher E string (treble E string) to correctly play F5 Chord.

In this post we are going to learn 10 different variations of G Chord on Guitar, which includes G Chord, Standard G Chord, G7 Chord, Gm Chord, Gm7 Chord, Gmaj7 Chord, Gsus4 Chord, G7sus4 Chord, Gsus2 Chord and G5 Chord. This post on G chord is going to be interesting as we are going to learn G chord with 7, major chord, minor chord, major 7 chord, minor 7 chord, suspended 4 ‘sus4’, suspended 2 ‘sus2’, G7 with sus4 chord, G chord with sus2 chord and G power chord so almost all type of G chords.

Every Chord on Guitar is having different set of position to play and different positions are called by different names depending on the selection of different Notes on the Guitar. Well the main part to play any chord is to play the Root Note and rests of the Notes are selected as per the requirement.

Let me quickly go through the suffix used in the G Chord name,

Gm Chord – Here, ‘m’ represents the Minor, this is called as G Minor Chord.

Gmaj7 Chord – Here, ‘maj’ represents G major 7 Chord, generally we don’t use anything at the time of signifying Major Chord. E.g. G Chord is always a G Major Chord unlike G minor chord. For every minor chord we have to use suffix ‘m’. Gm Chord is always G minor Chord. But I think we can use ‘maj’ at the time of Gmaj7 Chord.

Gsus Chord – Here, ‘sus’ represents Suspended, Gsus4 Chord is known as G suspended 4 Chord. We will discuss suspended naming convention and what 2 and 4 represents in sus Chords. E.g. ‘sus2’ and ‘sus4’ we will see at the time of discussing Gsus4 Chord.

G5 Chord – Here, 5 represents Power Chord, G5 Chord is also known as G Power Chord.

G Chord Variations:

1. G Chord:

This is the simplest pattern of G Chord and most of us start playing G chord from this pattern only.

How to play G Chord:

There are 2 ways to position your finger in the G chord pattern.

A. Put your middle finger on the 5^th string 3^rd fret and Index finger on the 5^th string 2^nd fret and place your ring finger on the 1^st string 3^rd fret to play G chord.

B. Put your ring finger on the 5^th string 3^rd fret and middle finger on the 5^th string 2^nd fret and place our smaller (4^th) finger on the 1^st string 3^rd fret to play G chord. Initially this pattern will take time as it needs lot of stretch between the ring finger and the smaller finger. Generally this position is derived by Barre chord pattern and is useful as your index finger is free to pick other notes which are useful in case of finger picking in between the chords.

Actually the second pattern allows you to move freely and pick other chords like G7 Chord, C Chord and other chords discussed in this post.

Well I am following the first pattern as I have used it from the beginning and now habitual of picking G chord like this and feel like there is no harm in picking G chord this way. But yes as and when required picking G chord using second pattern.

2. Standard G Chord:

This is a standard G chord and I believe most of you are already aware of the pattern.

How to play G Chord:

Put your ring finger on 2^nd string 3^rd fret, smaller finger on 1^st string 3^rd fret, middle finger on 6^th string 3^rd fret and your index finger on 5^th string 3nd fret to play G Chord on Guitar.

3. G7 Chord:

G7 Chord is also very often used chord, this chord could add spice to user chord progression. G chord other than first two G chord pattern which we have already discussed are played as per the requirement and feel of the song you are playing.

As all of these chords sound different from each other but yes all these different G Chord patterns have that feeling of G Chord.

How to play G7 Chord:

Put your index finger on 1^st string 1^st fret, middle finger on 5^th string 2^nd fret and ring finger on 6^th string 3^rd fret to play G7 chord on Guitar.

Remember that strings 2^nd, 3^rd and 4^th will be played open. Once you grab the G7 chord position correctly check all the string one by one by plucking them individually.

4. Gm Chord (G Minor Chord):

Well, Gm chord (G Minor Chord) is a bar chord with Barre at 3^rd fret. This one also sound nice and will always have Sad feeling as this is a G Minor Chord.

How to play Gm Chord:

Put your ring finger on 5^th string 5^th fret, put smaller finger on 4^th string 5^th fret and then put bar at 3^rd fret using your Index finger to play Gm Chord on Guitar. There is no recommendation on the sequence of placing bar and fingers on specified Notes on Guitar.

Placing bar in the beginning or at the end (after placing ring and smaller finger), whichever suits you. You can pick this G7 chord position like the way you want.

5. Gm7 Chord (G minor 7 chord):

Gm7 Chord is basically G minor 7 Chord. Let’s quickly check the Gm7 chord position.

How to play Gm7 Chord:

Put your ring finger on 5^th string 5^th fret, put smaller finger on 2^nd string 6^th fret and then put bar at 3^rd fret using your Index finger to play Gm7 Chord. You may find little trouble playing this one but keep practicing and patience is the key of success.

6. Gmaj7 Chord (G major 7 chord):

Once you get the pattern and play Gmaj7 chord you will feel that this chord gives a happy feeling as it belongs to G chord family with major behavior.

How to play Gmaj7 Chord:

Put your index finger on 1^st string 1^st fret, put middle finger on the 2^nd string 2^nd fret, put ring finger on the 3^rd string 3^rd fret and put your smaller finger on the 4^th string 4^th fret to play Gmaj7 Chord.

Remember not to play 5^th and 6^th string with this pattern as Gmaj7 chord is not allowing both these strings.

Try to start strumming on 1^st, 2^nd, 3^rd and 4^th strings only.

7. Gsus4 Chord (G suspended 4 chord):

Gsus4 Chord is G Suspended 4 Chord. Suspended chord is majorly used in Pop music.

Basically any major chord is a combination of Root Note, 3^rd Note and the 5^th Note. In order to play sus2 chord you need to replace the middle 3^rd note with the 2^nd Note. However to play sus4 chord you need to replace the 3^rd note with the 4^th Note.

Let’s take up an example of C Chord and try to find the Csus4 Chord quickly. First write down the Note series starting from C i.e. C D E F G A B C.

Root note is C, 4^th Note is F and 5^th Note is G. So Csus4 should consist of C, F and G Notes.

Now coming to Gsus4 chord, let’s check out the pattern of Gsus4 Chord.

How to play Gsus4 Chord:

Put your ring finger on the 6^th string 3^rd fret, put smaller finger on the 1^st string 3^rd fret and your index finger on the 2^nd string 1^st fret to play Gsus4 Chord. Also you need to make sure to mute 5^th string from your ring finger as 5^th string is mute and 3^rd and 4^th string will be played open in Gsus4 chord.

8. G7sus4 Chord (G7 suspended 4 chord):

G7sus4 Chord is also one of the interesting chord in G chord family. I will suggest you to at least try to play all of the chords we are discussing in this post and feel the difference of their sound.

How to play G7sus4 Chord:

Put your ring finger on the 6^th string 3^rd fret, put smaller finger on 4^th string 3^rd fret and your index finger on the 2^nd string 1^st fret to play G7sus4 Chord.

You need to remember to mute 5^th string from your ring finger which is placed just next to 5^th string and mute 1^st string from your index finger which is placed on 2^nd string. This is required as G7sus4 chord is played with 5^th and 1^st strings muted.

9. Gsus2 Chord (G suspended 2 chord):

Gsus2 chord is known as G suspended 2 chord.

How to play Gsus2 Chord:

Put your middle finger on 6^th string 3^rd fret, put ring finger on 2^nd string 3^rd fret and your smaller finger on 1^st string 3^rd fret to play Gsus2 chord.

10. G5 Chord (G Power chord):

G5 Chord is the last G chord pattern we are going to discuss in this post. G5 chord is also known as G Power chord.

How to play G5 Chord or G Power Chord:

G5 chord can be played based on your interest and the requirement of song and feel. You can play G5 chord or G power chord by just focusing on low three strings on guitar. To get this G chord position you need to put your index finger on the third fret sixth string your ring finger on the fifth fret fifth string and your pinky finger on the fifth fret forth string.

Remember to mute higher 3 strings i.e. G string, B string and higher E string (treble E string) to correctly play G5 Chord.

Generally people are playing only one pattern of C chord on Guitar which is the most popular and very easy to play on Guitar. But there are other C Chord Guitar positions also available which are best suitable at many other places and also sound well in different scales.

You may have faced incidents when in any chord progression you know that this is C Chord but that sounds little different from the standard C Chord on Guitar you know. At least that’s irritated me multiple times in past especially in the case of B chord or G chord. But we should understand that there are multiple ways or chord positions to play any of the Guitar Chords. C Chord | Guitar Chords Variations:

1. C Chord | Guitar Chords variation Standard:

Let’s first discuss the Standard and most popular C Chord Guitar variation.

C Chord Guitar Finger Position:

Place your Index finger on 2^nd string 1^st fret, your middle finger on 4^th string 2^nd fret and your Ring finger on 5^th string 3^rd fret to play this C Chord Guitar variation.

How to play C Chord Guitar variation:

1. Once you grab the C Chord position on Guitar fretboard, first quickly pluck and check if all strings are sounding clear and clean.

2. Start with slow motion down strum and up strum, then strum for 4-5 times and release you finger from the fretboard.

3. Again try to grab the position and repeat from point 1.

If in case you are facing issue in stretching your finger while playing C Chord then you should learn to twist or roll your wrist to little left and try to get the shape on fretboard. Also you can try some good finger stretching exercises.

These exercises on daily basis will help you to get and play more difficult chord position easily on Guitar whether its C chord or F chord. As there are different type chords you are going to learn next in future such as C Power chord, sus2 chord, sus4 chord (Suspended chords), C7 chord and C9 chord etc. So only these finger picking and stretching exercises are going to help you.

Here is another C Chord guitar variation with a little add-on. Why this is with G bass is because we are addition G note on Low G bass string (6^th string) to play C Chord on Guitar.

This C Chord Guitar variation sound little more melodious, deep and give a G chord touch on the bass string. Personally I like this one.

C Chord Guitar Finger Position:

Place your Index finger on 2^nd string 1^st fret, your middle finger on 4^th string 2^nd fret, your Ring finger on 6^th string 3^rd fret and your smaller finger on the 5^th string 3^rd fret to play this C Chord Guitar variation.

This position looks like F chord shape and little starchy and i believe that practicing this C Chord pattern you will start playing this one correctly. Just one tip to keep doing Guitar finger stretching exercises on a daily basis, these exercises not only help you to get the shape correctly but also helps you to remember all Notes and play different Notes from different finger quickly and correctly.

How to play C Chord Guitar variation:

1. Once you grab this C Chord shape on Guitar fretboard, first pluck all string one after another to check if all strings are sounding clear and clean.

2. Strum the C Chord for 4-5 times and release you finger from the fretboard.

3. Again try to grab the correct C chord position and repeat from point 1.

This way you are releasing and forming C Chord shape frequently which will help your fingers habitual of getting into this C Chord shape quickly, correctly and easily in a couple of days.

3. C Chord | Guitar variation C add 9 Chord:

Next C Chord Guitar variation is C add 9 Chord. Shape of this C Chord Guitar variation is like G Chord on Guitar.

This is a very helpful C Chord most of the times when you need to play G chord, D chord and C Chord very frequently. Most likely you just need to keep last 2 fingers steady while switching in between G chord and C chord and D Chord Guitar shapes.

This is one of the popular shapes of C Chord Guitar Chords variation and hence is important as well as easy to learn.

C Chord Guitar Finger Position:

Place your Index finger on 4^th string 2^nd fret, your middle finger on 5^th string 3^rd fret, your Ring finger on 2^nd string 3^rd fret and your smaller finger on the 1^st string 3^rd fret to play this C Chord Guitar Chords variation.

How to play C Chord Guitar variation:

1. Firstly try to place your ring finger and smaller finger on the 1^st and 2^nd string on 3^rd fret and then place your index and middle finger on the concerned strings to get the C chord Gutar variation. Once you grab this C Chord shape on Guitar fretboard, first pluck all string one after another to check if all strings are sounding clear and nice.

2. Strum the C Chord for 4-5 times and release you finger from the fretboard.

3. Again try to grab the position and repeat from point 1.

4. C Chord Guitar variation C5 Chord or C Power Chord:

This C chord Guitar variation is also popular in Power Chord, we will discuss this C Power chord shape. Basically there are 6 different shapes to play C Chord as Power Chord but we will discuss only one as other are at higher Note and are not so popular among C Chord family.

C5 Chord name itself confirms that it’s a C Power Chord, here C represents C Chord and 5 represent the Power Chord. E.g. A Power Chord is A5 Chord, B Power Chord is B5 Chord, G Power Chord is G5 Chord and so C Power Chord is termed as C Power Chord.

C Chord Guitar Finger Position:

While playing C Power Chord and any other Power Chord your middle finger always sits ideal.

Place your Index finger on 5^th string 3^nd fret, your Ring finger on 4^th string 5^th fret and your smaller finger on the 3^rd string 5^th fret to play this C Chord Guitar variation.

How to play C Chord Guitar variation:

1. To play C5 Chord or C Power Chord always remember to mute 1^st, 2^nd and 6^th Strings mute. Now there is a small trick to play C5 chord or C Power Chord, If you have already gone through power Chord training then you know how to mute first two strings with the help of Index finger but to mute 6^th string on Guitar you need to pick 5^th string from a little lower part of your index finger is that it just reaches and touches the 6^th string to mute it.

2. Once you grab this C5 Chord or power chord shape on Guitar fretboard, first pluck all string one after another to check if all 1^st 2^nd and 6^th strings are sounding mute and 5^th 4^th and 3^rd strings are sounding clear and nice. Also try to strum a lower part or try to skip the 1^st and 2^nd strings while strumming to play C 5 Chord or C Power Chord.

5. C Chord Guitar variation C Chord Bar Shape:

C Chord as a C Bar chord is another C Chord Guitar Variation that we are going to discuss. There are multiple shapes and positions to play the C Chord as C Bar Chord but here we are going to discuss the only one shape. Reason behind this is that you can play this shape in lower frets and so easy to play. And YES this is the correct C bar chord shape so you can starts from this one.

Bar is actually called as Barre, but in this post I am calling it Bar to just simply represent the shape pattern and if in case you have heard this name first time so it will be easy to remember.

Bar Chords are gives chord sound more quality and also gives more control to the Guitarist on the sound it generates. E.g. Muting and buzzing effects.

C Chord Guitar Finger Position:

Put Bar on the 3^rd Fret from your Index finger, Place your Middle finger on 4^th string 5^nd fret, your Ring finger on 3^rd string 5^th fret and your smaller finger on the 2^nd string 5^th fret to play this C Chord Guitar variation.

How to play C Chord Guitar variation:

Only putting Bar is the little tricky part, Once you grab this C Chord bar Guitar shape and place your Index finger on Guitar fretboard, first pluck all string one after another to check strings are sounding clear and nice without any mute. Let’s discuss how to put Barre correctly.

6. C Chord Guitar variation C7 Chord:

C7 chord is quite similar to standard C major chords per pattern. It has the same three notes as a C major chord i.e. C Note, E Note, and G Note and in addition of this C7 chord has one extra note and that is A# Note.

As C7 chord is a different from C major Chord so it sound bit different. But there are places when you can use C7 chord as a alternative of C major chord but every time this is not going to happen. So be careful and inventive.

How to play C Chord Guitar variation:

Place your index finger on 2^nd string 1^st fret, middle finger on 4^th string 2^nd fret, ring finger on 5^th string 3^rd fret and smaller finger on 3^rd string 3^rd fret to play C7 Chord.

1. First of all place your left hand thumb at the down side of the back of fretboard and then put your index finger on the fret to place bar so that it can reach to the last thick string, this will form C Chord position.

2. Put little pressure on the entire strings and place bar just besides (left) the fret separator.

3. Now twist your finger a bit to the left side and then apply small pressure again.

4. This twist or roll is required since your finger front is always soft and so you cannot put bar from the fleshy part of the finger. Finger side is harder than the finger front and hence we always putting bar from the side of finger.

5. After following above given procedure make sure that your index finger is positioned at just left side of the Fret separator now.

6. Pluck all strings one by one and check if they are sounding okay.

Remember, you don’t need to overlap the fret wire (Fret separators). Index finger should be placed near fret separator to close all loops correctly.

You must be thinking if Power Chord is playing with three strings or only two strings and if you start from fifth string then what to do with the sixth string. So guys it’s very simple just mute the sixth one. To do this when you are placing and pressing fifth string just press the string from the lower part of your Index finger so that it just touches sixth string on guitar to mute it.

First let’s look at what is a Power Chord and the formation of Power Chord,

Guitar Chords | What is a Power Chord on Guitar?

Power Chord is generally known as Two Note Chord, first Note is the Root Note which decides the name of the Power Chord and Second Note is the Fifth Note in the Scale. Due to this 5^th Note Power Chord is symbolized as ‘5’. E.g. B Power chord is B5 & C power Chord is C5. In B5, B tells us the name of the Power Chord and 5 tells us that this is a Power Chord.

Guitar Chords | Power Chord Naming Convention

We can also called Power Chord as Three Note Chord which includes Root Note as the first Note and this Root Note will decides the Name of the Power Chord, Second Note is the Fifth Note in the Scale however the Third Note is the same Note but 1 Octave Higher.

Let’s take an example of A Power Chord,

Since we are discussing A Power Chord so Root Note should be A Note only, you can grab it quickly by Index finger on 12^th Fret or you can also play it open in open case you don’t need to touch any string, the Next Note is 5^th Note which is E Note in case of A Root Note Now you can place your ring finger on E Note on one string higher (Suppose you place index finger on 5^th string then you will place Ring finger on 4^th string).

Now what about 3^rd Note, A Note is the Root Note so the third Note will always be the same A Note but will be played 1 Octave Higher which will always have a higher pitch then the First Note.

Playing the 3^rd Note in Power Chord is our choice, taste and need of Chord as both the 2 Note and 3 Note sounds little different.

Good thing about this lesson is we will discuss the position first and then move this position to other frets to get new chord pattern. You don’t need to change the shape of your finger in Power Chord while switching from One Chord to another Chord on Guitar and this will make it easier to play power chord on Guitar.

Now, let’s check out other Power chords available with the same pattern,

1. How to Play A Power Chord or A5 Chord on Guitar:

The first Power chord on the fretboard is A Power Chord. A power chord is also known as A5 Chord on Guitar. There is no need to put index finger anywhere as Guitar Nut is already available to place the bar (barre). Since the 5^th string is also known as A string so to find the A Note in this string is just to play it open.

Let’s quickly review A Power Chord position,

Place your Ring finger on the forth string 2^nd fret and smaller finger on the 3^rd string 2^nd fret. You just need to remember to mute 2^nd and 1^st string.

2. How to Play A# (A sharp) or Bb (B Flat) Power Chord on Guitar:

Let’s quickly review A# (A Sharp) or Bb (B Flat) Power Chord position,

To play A# power chord on guitar, place your Index finger on the 5^th string 1^st fret, your Ring finger on the 4^th string 3^rd fret and your pinky (smaller) finger on the 3^rd string 3^rd fret.

Keep this position and pluck each string one by one to make sure that all 3 power chord strings i.e. fifth string, forth string and third strings should sound nice and clear. Also, sixth string, second string and first string are muted by your index finger.

Trick to mute the 6^th string along with 2^nd and 3^rd string is that you need to press the 5^th string only from the little lower part of your index finger so that it just reaches and touch the 6^th string to mute and to mute higher string you touch those softly with the help of index finger only.

In other words, Just try to acquire bar type share with you index finger and softly touches all the strings to mute except 5^th string (Only string to play in 1^st fret).

B Power Chord or B5 Chord is our third power chord on fretboard in this sequence.

Place your index finger on 5^th string 11^th fret which is the Root note of G# (G Sharp) power chord or Ab (A Flat) Power Chord on guitar fretboard, place your Ring finger on 4^th string 13^th fret and your smaller finger on 3^rd string 13^th fret to play G# (G Sharp) Power Chord or Ab (A Flat) Power chord on Guitar correctly.

You have noticed that all sharp and flat chords are either subsequent or preceding alphabet name. However, for G# power chord it Ab (A Flat) power chord. The reason behind this is these chords are cyclic as per naming convention and Guitar note theory. Hence after G we again are going to pick A as our next Note or Chord on Guitar.

Important point to remember is Flat chord follows the preceding Chord and Sharp chord follows the subsequent Chord while being called or at the time of nomenclature. In other words the Sharp chord (# chord) takes us one fret higher on the fretboard and Flat Chord (b Chord) takes us one fret lower on the fretboard on Guitar.

13. How to play A Power Chord or A5 Chord Second Position on Guitar:

Well, we have completed all 12 Chords and Notes. So now all those chords are going to repeat them and give us their second position on Guitar. You will see that all second position chords will have same shape as the first one but here for A Power Chord the shape is little different since if you will check the first shape (1^st chord we discussed in the Post) then you realize that we are finding root notes on A string so for A chord A string need to be played as open and hence we have not placed index finger on any note on Guitar.

And here the second A note on A string we have found on 12^th Fret and hence we are going to place index finger on Root Note this time.

Point to consider here is as we are moving towards the right side of the guitar neck you will realize that the Pitch of the chords and notes are becoming high with every fret move.

To play A Power chord or A5 Chord on Guitar you will grab 5^th string on 12^th fret by your Index finger as this is the position of A Note on Guitar fretboard, grab 4^th string on 14^th fret from your Ring finger and place your smaller finger on the 3^rd string 14^th fret.

How to Practice and Play A Power chord or A5 Chord Second Position:

Follow the same procedure as mentioned in previously explained Chords. Only suggestion is to take upmost care on the ring finger and smaller finger position as you need to press the string little harder to play chords on higher Frets.

14. How to play A# (A Sharp) or Bb (B Flat) Power Chord Second Position on Guitar:

Let’s review A# or Bb Power chord second position on Guitar,

To play A# (A Sharp) Power Chord or Bb (B Flat) Power chord second position on Guitar you need to grab 5^th string on 13^th fret by your Index finger as this is the position of A# Note on Guitar fretboard, grab 4^th string on 15^th fret from your Ring finger and place your smaller finger on the 3^rd string 15^th fret.

Since these Second Position Chords are played on higher frets hence they have higher pitch and are rarely used.

Point to remember, A# Power Chord we played by picking A# note on 1^st fret and now acquiring same shape on higher fret will sound same but their Pitch will always differ.

Pitch goes higher with every move towards right side. In other terms if we are playing any chord on 1^st fret and playing same chord on 13^th fret then the Pitch of chord played on 13^th fret is always higher than the chord played on 1^st fret and important part is their sound will always be same.

15. How to play B Power Chord or B5 Chord Second Position on Guitar:

To play B Power chord or B5 Chord second position on Guitar you need to grab 5^th string on 14^th fret by your Index finger as this is the position of B Note on Guitar fretboard, grab 4^th string on 16^th fret from your Ring finger and place your smaller finger on the 3^rd string 16^th fret.

To play next chord i.e. C Power Chord or C5 Chord second position the root note is at 5^th String and 15^th Fret. Hold the same shape on same strings as B Power chord and move one fret towards right side to play C power chord on Guitar. Since there is no sharp and flat chord available in between B chord and C Chord on Guitar that is the reason they are sitting beside each other.

Playing at higher frets of Guitar is actually difficult, we generally ignoring playing chords on higher notes of Guitar.

In this lesson we are going to learn about all Power chords, different positions and how to play different Power chords on guitar. We will learn all chords mentioned below,

The best thing about Power Chords is their Resonating effect which personally I like the most.

So, the thing with power chords on guitar is really interesting is that there is only one shape and we need to just shift the fret to play the other power chord. However hold the shape is based on our interest and requirement.

And it is really important to realize that these power chords has three guitar notes which are the thickest three strings and other three strings are dead (muted). The position of power chord on guitar looks like a bar chord from distance. However we are just muting first three high strings with the help of our index finger. In the bar chord we are pressing all string at one fret by our index finger unlike in power chord we are just pressing the lowest E string with the index finger and just touching other five string so as to mute all of them.

Now the cool thing about power chords is only one shape just move around so even you don’t need to change the shape of the chord throughout the song. In other words we don’t need to learn too many power chord shapes to play any song. For example pick G5 power chord or G power chord then if you will move same pattern to one fret towards right side on the fretboard this G5 power chord will become G# Power Chord and then A power Chord and so on.

There are so many songs used these power chords and you can also play and fit these anywhere.

Now let’s play our first Power chord on guitar and that is,

G Power Chord (G5 Power Chord):

This shape of G power chord is also known as G5 Power chord. The important thing to understand in Power chord is to pick the Root note from your index finger, in other words power chords on guitar starts from the Root note only. If you will look at the G chord representation in below figure so you will realize that the chord shape starts from the G note on sixth string third fret, basically sixth string on third fret position is actually G note so this G power chord need to starts from this place only.

Understanding notes on guitar strings at different position is also important so if you want to learn the easy and absolutely correct technique to get the notes name you can check out lesson ‘Guitar Chords and Position Technique’.

This lesson is very Important in terms of understanding Guitar related existing theories as this lesson explains you about different notes available and their sequence and their position on each string, how different Chords are form by keeping same pattern and by just changing fret position. This lesson will clear all your doubts.

To play G power chord on guitar you need to place your index finger on the sixth string third fret at the same time try to just touch all other strings in the third fret, your middle finger reaching up on the fifth string fifth fret and your pinky finger on the forth string fifth string.

Try to lock your middle finger and pinky finger with each other in the same position, this will help you further to move on to other frets keeping same finger shape to play other power chords on Guitar.

This G power chord position seems to be same as bar chord position only difference is that in bar chord you will put barre (bar) correctly on the fret however while playing power chord you will use index finger to pick only one note and mute all other strings on same fret (not to press down any other string).

At the time of placing your middle finger after placing your index finger you probable will find it little stretchy and difficult hopefully your are doing finger stretch exercises as a part of your exercises you are doing every day. If so you don’t feel too much trouble to acquire this position of Power chords on guitar.

Now after getting required pattern before start of strumming just play each string individually to make sure that all three thick strings are sounding nice and other three treble strings are muted.

Now, let’s check out other Power chords available with the same pattern,

1. F Power Chord on Guitar:

The first Power chord on the fretboard is F Power Chord and to acquire its pattern or chord shape we need to place index finger on the F note on sixth string. Now, the position of F note on sixth or low E string (thickest string) is at first fret. Let’s quickly review F Power Chord position,

To play F power chord on Guitar, place your first (Index) finger on the sixth or low E string first fret, your Ring finger on fifth string third fret and your pinky (forth) finger on the fourth string third fret. Keep this position and pluck each string one by one, make sure all string (E, A & D) sixth string, fifth string and forth string sound should be clean and clear and all other three treble strings are muted by you index finger.

Also don’t try to mute only these three strings, actually you need to mute all string except low E string with the help of you index finger. Since you have already placed your fingers on fifth and fourth strings on higher fret (third fret) so in that case it doesn’t matter whether you are muting only three strings on first fret or all strings. Only thing matters is first three low string (String E, A and D) should sound clearly and other three are muted.

2. F# (F sharp) Power Chord or Gb (G Flat) Power Chord:

This is the second power chord on guitar fretboard which is F# (F sharp) Power Chord and also known as Gb (G flat) Power Chord to play on Guitar. F# power chord name itself justifies its position we need to place our Index finger on the F# or Gb note on sixth string which is at second fret.

Place your index finger on sixth string second fret which is the root note of F# or Gb chord on guitar, place you ring finger on fifth string forth fret and your pinky finger on forth string forth fret. Also, before start playing F# or Gb power chord make sure all three low string sound nice and clear and strings one to three are muted then after play F# power chord.

You do not need to try to place your middle finger on the fifth string forth fret as there is no need of Middle finger in Power chords.

G Power chord is the third power chord in this sequence. To play G power chord we need to pick the G note on sixth string, this is the first mandatory and required qualifying step to proceed, the another condition is the pattern we need to keep the pattern static while moving around the guitar neck from one fret to other to play different chords.

As we have discussed earlier while reviewing G# (G sharp) power chord or Ab Power chord (A flat power chord) that there is no Sharp (#) and Flat (b) between B Note and C Note & E Note and F Note and chords. So, after acquiring this position on guitar when you move one Fret towards right side same shape becomes F Power Chord.

13. F Power Chord on Guitar (Second Position):

This is the second position of F Power chord on Guitar fretboard, as we have already moved 12 frets towards right side and this is the nature of Guitar music theory that there are 12 notes available and then after they will repeat themselves. So after E Power chord again F Power Chord comes.

Place your index finger on sixth string thirteenth fret which is the root note of E power chord on guitar fretboard, place your Ring finger on fifth string fifteenth fret and your Pinky finger on forth string fifteenth fret to play F power chord second position on Guitar correctly.

Also, the F power chord we play by picking F note on First fret and same shape here on thirteenth fret will sound same but their Pitch will differ.

Remember, Pitch tends to go higher with every fret towards Right side. In other words if we are playing any chord on first fret and playing same chord on thirteenth fret then the Pitch of chord on thirteenth fret is always higher than the chord on first fret, however their sound will always be same.

Now these chords will start repeating themselves as if you will keep same shape as F Power Chord and move to the next right fret then you will get second position for F# (F sharp) power chord or Eb (E Flat) Power Chord.

14. F# (F Sharp) or Gb (G Flat) Power Chord on Guitar (Second Position):

This F# Power Chord or Gb Power Chord second position is not the popular position as this chord is lying at high fret position. But for practice purpose you can try to play this one. You may face difficulty while playing F# Chord shape in this position as your Ring finger and Pinky finger will be at higher end of Fretboard and you need to press them a lot to sound fifth and fourth string clean and clear.

So, if you find it difficult to play any second position of power chord on Guitar mentioned in this post then don’t worry they are not so important. I have illustrated them just to share the actual position.

That’s it.

To pick F# (F Sharp) Power Chord or Gb (G Flat) Power Chord second position the root note is at sixth String and fourteenth Fret. Hold the same shape on same strings and frets are fourteen and sixteenth to play F# power chord or Gb Power Chord on Guitar.

In this lesson I am going to explain you different variations to play G major chord on Guitar also why each of these G major chords are extremely important and in what scenario you will use each one of these G chords on guitar.

It's kind of this problem and I ran into when i was starting to play guitar and still due to a situation where you're looking at a song and check maybe the chord sheet or something like that and you see the tabs maybe and it called for G chord and you're like but wait that's not the G chord that I know. Is there more than one G chord to play on Guitar?

Well the answer is YES there are more than one G chord which can play on guitar.

Then again the question is if there are more than one G chord then how do I know which one to use?

Now first let me say this G chord is a G chord and is actually a G chord it may sound differently but YES it a G chord only.

All of these G chord variations on Guitar I am going to teach you in this lesson and they will suffice, however each one of these G chords has little different new answers to that actually make it excel in certain situations and that is what I am going to share with you in these G chord Variations on Guitar lesson.

so without any further delay let's dive into the after shapes so I am going to name these shaped these artificial names these are just names that i want to share with you that may help you remember each of these different fingering patterns so the first the shape you chord that I am going to show you is what i like to call the open G Chord

1. Open G Chord on Guitar:

For this G chord particular shape your pinky is going to hit the high string on the third fret, your ring finger the B string on the third fret your middle finger will reach up and grab the third fret of the lowest ring and your index finger it will grab the second fret of the fifth string and now strum to play this pattern of G chord on Guitar.

That's a actual shape for Open G chord on Guitar.

2. Modified Open G Chord:

There's a quick modification in actual G chord shape, which I want to show. To get this modified new G chord shape you’ll make the angle with your middle finger so as to mute fifth string and lift up your index finger to make G chord more useful.

This pattern of G chord is actually sounds nice and is been followed as per the requirement. Also in this pattern your index finger is free to pick any note on the left side and even you can switch and play a lot of famous melodies in between strumming.

3. Finger Picking G chord pattern on Guitar:

let's move on to the next shape of G chord on guitar, I like to call the finger picking G Chord so this will have your pinky finger again on the third fret of the high E string your ring finger this time will shoot up to the low E string third fret and your middle finger at the second fret of the A string. This is what I would like to call the finger picking G Chord on Guitar.

This G chord pattern is my favorite as this G chord shape allows your pinky finger and my index finger to move and find melody notes on the High E, B and even the G string; basically this G chord pattern on guitar gives us flexibility to switch from the strumming to finger picking smoothly.

That's pretty common G chord pattern on Guitar, when that's usually what folks learned there's a couple variations of every G chord but I am not going to get into every variation of every G chord here I am just going to share with you the different G chord positions which i like to use the most and again the reasons why they exist and the forth G chord shape I want to share with you is probably the least favorite of all new and beginner Guitarist that is Barre G chord but it actually has some really powerful uses.

4. Barre (Bar) G Chord on Guitar:

One of the strong reason why Bar G chord is so powerful is just as it gives you control to sustain the string sound and the muting effect to mute all strings at once in a controlled fashion while strumming G chord with bar on Guitar.

Let’s move on to the position of bar G chord shape where you're index finger bars everything from the low string all the way to the high E string on and the third fret, your ring finger will grab the fifth fret of the A string pinky finger on the fifth fret of the D string and middle finger and the fourth fret of the G string and that's going to be your bar G chord.

5. Alternative 1 of Bar G chord on Guitar:

If you find difficult to play this bar shape G chord don't worry, you can still reach the benefits of this particular G chord on guitar.

For this new G chord shape you just need not to put a complete bar on the third fret however you can suffice the requirement by putting small bar on just first string and the second string with your index finger, your middle finger on the forth fret third string and your ring finger on the fifth fret forth string. It’s a three finger picking pattern of G chord in G bar Chord fret position.

You can also take advantage of Bar G chord bar muting effect by just playing four high strings while strumming on guitar.

6. Alternative 2 of Bar G chord on Guitar:

To play this pattern of G chord you need to follow F chord pattern starting from third fret.

Your index finger put half bar on string one and two on third fret, your middle finger on third string forth fret, your ring finger on fifth string fifth fret and your pinky finger on forth string fifth fret. Hold this position and strum to play G chord correctly on Guitar.

7. Power E Chord on Guitar:

Let’s check out Power G chord on guitar, well based on your interest, resonating effect and requirement you can play that what we call the power chord version of G chord by just focusing on low three strings on guitar. To get this G chord position you need to put your index finger on the third fret sixth string your ring finger on the fifth fret fifth string and your pinky finger on the fifth fret forth string.

8. Bar G Chord Position 2 on Guitar:

This is another position and least famous G chord where you can play bar G chord on Guitar; this G chord is positioned on high frets on Guitar and has high pitch.

To pick this pattern your index finger need to place complete bar on the eleventh fret, your middle finger on twelfth fret forth string, ring finger on twelfth fret third string and pinky on twelfth fret second string.

Bm or B Minor Chord:

Let’s quickly cover the Bm (B minor) different Chord available patterns one by one.

1. The Easiest Bm (B Minor) Chord Technique:

The first Bm (B minor) chord I am going to show you, is the simplest and the useful Bm (B minor) chord pattern even if you play the more complicated once.

This one is the easiest one and there is no doubt that this is the Bm ( B Minor ) Chord which you can play anywhere and will sound like a Bm (B Minor) Chord. Let’s move on to the next pattern.

2. Let’s Play Bm (B Minor) Chord without Bar (Barre):

To play this Bm (B minor) chord pattern on guitar, You need to add just one more finger to the above discussed Bm (B minor) chord pattern.

Now this Bm chord becomes the four finger chord.

Place you 4 fingers, index finger on the first string second fret, middle finger on the second string third fret, ring finger on the forth string fourth fret and pinky finger on the third string forth fret and strum first five strings (Just leave sixth string) to play Bm( B Minor ) Chord on Guitar.

In this pattern your ring finger and pinky finger will be closer and just next to each other.

To do the practice I will recommend to place your finger on the pattern and strum slowly 5 times the off your finger from the strings shake your hand and again try to place your finger correctly and start strumming slowly and immediately.

3. The Complete Bm (B Minor) Chord (With Bar):

Now coming to the third form of Bm ( B minor ) chord, this one is the most useful among all three Bm chord patterns.

This one is a bar (Barre) Bm chord, you need to place bar (all the way across on the neck of the second fret of guitar then you put down the other three fingers) from your index finger on the second fret of guitar, your middle finger on the second string third fret, your ring finger on the forth string forth fret and your pinky finger on the third string forth fret to play this pattern of Bm (B minor) chord.

Putting Bar (Barre) correctly on Guitar (B Chord or B7 Guitar Chord):

Well please follow the procedure given below,

1. first of all place your left hand thumb at the down side of the back of fretboard and then put your index finger on the fret so that it can reach to the last thick string.

2. Put little pressure on the entire strings and place bar just besides (left) the fret separator.

3. Now twist your finger a bit to the left side and then apply small pressure again.

5. After following above given procedure make sure that your index finger is positioned at just left side of the Fret separator now.

6. Pluck all strings one by one and check if they are sounding okay.

Remember, you don’t need to overlap the fret wire (Fret separators). Index finger should be placed near fret separator to close all loops correctly.

Initially you will face trouble but keep practicing putting bar (Barre) will help you to place and play it correctly after couple of days. As required finger muscle strength will also improve by the time with practicing it.

B Chord in Guitar:

There are multiple patterns available to play B chord on Guitar.

1. B Chord with A major chord pattern with bar (Barre).

2. B Chord with E major chord Pattern with bar (Barre).

3. B7 Guitar Chord pattern on Guitar for beginners.

Playing B chord on Guitar in an A major guitar chord formation you will be playing the chord in lower frets and to play B chord in an E major chord formation you will be playing the chord in higher frets. So sound of both of them is same however their pitch will differ.

Here B chord with A major formation will have lower pitch and B chord with E major formation will have higher pitch.

1. A Major Pattern of B Chord on Guitar

This B chord pattern will be done by putting Bar on second fret by your index finger and rest of the finger will be forming A major chord pattern in terms of picking strings (middle finger on forth string forth fret, Ring finger on third string forth fret and pinky finger on second string forth fret).

B chord formation is shown in the image below,

Remember, not to strum sixth string in this B chord pattern. You try to strum string 5^th to string 1^st and vice versa only.

2. B Chord with E Major Chord Pattern of Guitar

This B chord pattern will be formed by putting Bar on seventh fret by your index finger and rest of the finger will be forming E major chord pattern in terms of picking strings (middle finger on third string eighth fret, Ring finger on fifth string ninth fret and pinky finger on forth string ninth fret).

3. B7 Guitar Chord for Beginners

This one is for beginners as this pattern holds all root notes to make it B chord so there should not be any problem in playing B7 guitar chord instead for B chord for beginners (But not always, once you gain experience then shift to correct B chord pattern).

You can try this chord to replace B chord (if you find those difficult to correctly play) but this is for fresh beginners only. Remember, not to play sixth string while strumming on B7 Guitar Chord.

Sometimes we need to specifically used B7 guitar chord based on song requirement since both B chord and B7 guitar chords are finally different B chords Right!!!

We can say for beginners B7 guitar chord is an good alternative of B chord wherever suitable however for a expert Guitarist B7 guitar chord is actually a completely different chord of B chord family.
