In the past, most budget all-in-one PCs (20 inches or smaller) have come with an Intel Atom processor--a low-powered netbook favorite. So it's interesting to see HP use a faster 1.5GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 CPU for the MS214 ($600 as of December 8, 2009).The move pays off for the system's general performance, as its WorldBench 6 score of 59 is among the highest of any all-in-one desktop of this size and price.

Only two other sub 20-inch all-in-ones that have also ditched Atom beat the MS214: The $650, 20-inch MSI Wind Top AE2010 (with a 1.5GHz Athlon X2 dual-core 3250e) scored 60; and Dell's $944 Studio One 19 (with a 2.5GHz Pentium dual-core E5200) is way out in front with a WorldBench 6 score of 93. But as good as the 19-inch Dell is, $900 will now also get your the 23-inch Acer Aspire Z5610 all-in-one; it scored 101 in WorldBench.

Integrated graphics don't do much to assist the MS214 with games--it reached a wimpy (and unplayable) 11 frames per second in our Unreal Tournament 3 benchmark (even at a high-quality resolution of 1024 by 768). No surprise there, though, that's pretty much standard for all-in-ones at this price.

Two gigabytes of DDR2 memory are double what you'd typically find on an all-in-one system of this size (or smaller). So is the system's included storage capacity of 300GB (where typically we used to see 160GB). Integrated wireless-N connectivity is an excellent touch for those seeking speedy file transfers, as is the system's included gigabit LAN connectivity. You also get a DVD writer, and you can rip off the MS214's back panel and upgrade the system's hard drive and memory should you so desire--a tricky process, but HP does spell it out in the online documentation. It's rare to see a company outright supporting the direct tweaking of an all-in-one system, given the complexity involved in doing so. For that, I applaud HP.

Although the MS214's 18.5-inch (1366-by-768 resolution) screen doesn't do 1080p, the matte panel offers excellent contrasts without any of the unfortunate glare found on glossy-based systems. Picture saturation is as impressive as it is colorful, adding a rich vibrancy to images and movies that does much to make up for a drab exterior.

One of the biggest drawbacks of the MS214, however, is that, unlike its TouchSmart brethren, it is not equipped for multitouch. The lack of a touchscreen is a notable omission given that its 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium operating system begs to be touched, and less expensive all-in-one PCs often include at least single-touch functionality. And although the MS214's included speakers don't sound that bad given their small, laptop-quality size, the volume itself tends to run a bit lower than what you might otherwise expect to hear (get ready to turn it up to 11).

Instead of mindless bloatware, the collection of preinstalled HP software actually adds a bit of useful functionality. For example, the software dashboard is a great tool for inexperienced users to get a basic, graphics-heavy handle on what exactly their PC is doing in terms of storage capacity, security features, and other important tidbits. A number of MediaSmart programs for viewing movies and pictures are fun additions as well, but they'll likely frustrate you by forcing you to think about how much better it would be to manipulate your media by jabbing and swiping your finger around the screen. Bummer.

Another way HP shaved cost from MS214 was to cut back on connectivity. Two of the six USB ports will likely be taken up by the generic mouse and keyboard that HP's shoved in the box alongside the rig. That leaves you with a very low number of single-connection offerings for additional devices, as the system has no alternative connection standard, be it FireWire, eSATA, DisplayPort, or HDMI.

HP's MS214 is a big, fast (for its price) all-in-one system that's really rivaled only by the MSI and Dell machines mentioned earlier. So if you're looking to balance budget and speed, you'll find lots of appeal in the MS214.

How to Install HP Pavilion RAM And Save Money

So you bought a new Memory for your HP Pavilion Laptop. The next thing to do is go to a computer technician and pay them to install your new laptop OR you could try this instructional guide instead.

For those of you who cannot watch the video, here is the text summary:

James begins by showing a turned off HP Pavilion Laptop. He then flips over the laptop to show the bottom side of the laptop.

James starts by removing the battery first. He shows how to remove the battery by pushing the battery latch.

After removing the battery, he then explains where the RAM Expansion cover is located, it is at the center and not at the right left side which is where the Hardisk is located. He also mentions other HP Pavilion Entertainment PC parts like the wireless card, BIOS battery and the CD/DVD Drive.

He unscrews the screws to remove the cover of the RAM Expansion.

He proceeds to remove by pulling the connector away from the RAM. He loosens both sides of the connector to release the first RAM. After the RAM is removed, RAM Expansion slot connector is about 30 degree angle. He mentions to be careful not to touch the gold pins.

After removing the first RAM. The second RAM is showed. Again he lifts the RAM Expansion slot connector by 30 degree angle and proceeds to loosen both sides of the connector to release the second RAM.

That's how you remove the RAM.

To install the RAM, install the RAM expansion module into the connector at about 30 degree angle until it's fully inserted. Then press both down at both sides of the module until it latches. James mention the RAM's notch. The notch on the RAM and the connector should be aligned.

To install the second RAM follow the same steps. James put's the cover back on and he then proceeds by screwing the RAM Expansion cover. Note: Don't forget to put the battery back.

He access the BIOS( Basic Input and Output system). You can access this Setup Utility by pressing F10 when the HP logo appears. Note: On other versions you might press F2 to access the BIOS. If you have a Bios password, enter it.

In the BIOS Main page, you will see the Total Memory where you will see the RAM installed without booting the OS.

I'm excited to share with you the review on the new HP Pavilion Entertainment Dv7 series. One of the best things about the DV7 is it's Fast Core i7 processor; generous RAM and hard drive; 17.3-inch screen. You can imagine your laptop as a great entertainment.

The not so good about it is that it lacks 1080p or Blu-ray limits home theater appeal; gaming performance is middling. So when you are a gamer this will really bug you.

This holiday season, the field of high-end laptops was redefined by the release of Intel's Core i7 processor, which offers improved next-generation multicore performance. While some of the initial Core i7 machines were quite expensive, the technology has already trickled down to more affordable laptops such as the HP dv7-3085dx. Is it worth your while to consider? That depends on whether you want a machine that's fast or a machine that's fast with games.

At $1,299, the dv7 remains relatively slim for a gaming laptop, but with a GeForce 230M GPU, it's not really an enthusiast machine. Instead, consider its greatest assets to be the Core i7, a massive 17.3-inch screen, and higher-end Altec Lansing speakers, making this a compelling desktop home theater.

The package sounds great, especially since, other than the GPU, it has the same specs as the HP Envy 15-1050nr, which costs $700 more. On the other hand, some unfortunate cutbacks were made on this model: there's no Blu-ray (even while the much cheaper, but slower, dv7-3065dx includes it), and the very large screen isn't 1080p, although it comes close at 1,600x900 pixels.

This laptop represents a $300 price bump up from other high-end retail machines like the Sony Vaio FW560F/T, but the addition of a Core i7, solid gaming graphics, a fast hard drive, and plenty of RAM could make this a contender.

The design of this HP Pavilion dv7 is familiar to us; we've also reviewed a lower-spec midrange model in a nearly identical chassis, the HP Pavilion dv7-3065dx. Clad in a very glossy espresso finish with chrome pattern flourishes on the outer lid and inner palm rest area, the design of the Pavilion dv7 leans more toward multimedia sleek than gamer clunky. The slightly rounded edges and chrome highlights lend a nice formal look, but the fingerprints will mount up quickly.

The keyboard and adjoining number pad that span the width of the laptop's interior use glossy-topped tapered keys. While we're not a fan of shiny surfaces on our keyboards, the responsiveness and decent key spacing on this model made up for it. The touch pad wasn't our favorite, as HP tends to top their high-end models with smooth mirrored touch pads that, while looking stark, are prone to smudging and have poor traction. It didn't ruin our experience, but this is a laptop that cries for a mouse.

Above the keyboard is a set of touch-sensitive media keys, controlling volume, basic play, fast forward and rewind, and a Wi-Fi on/off toggle. The touch controls worked better than many, and were easy to locate.

The glossy 16.9 ratio 17.3-inch LED screen on the HP dv7-3085dx has a native resolution of 1,600x900 pixels, which is better than 720p but not quite 1080p "full HD" resolution. While this machine doesn't have a Blu-ray playing drive, it would have been nice to get fuller resolution for HD playback on a screen this size. In its existing max-resolution settings, images were large and clear but suffered from a slight lack of crispness. Side viewing angles were decent, but the tremendous glossy-screened surface area created many opportunities for glare.

On the audio front, the built-in multispeaker Altec Lansing array, with SRS surround effects, worked well and was one of the better laptop audio systems we've heard. Overall, the HP dv7-3085dx is a compelling audio/visual hardware setup, especially for the price, but, again, we really wish this had 1080p. And it's positively baffling that the cheaper $729 dv7-3065dx includes a Blu-ray drive, while this $1,299 model doesn't.

The 6GB of DDR3 RAM and large 500GB 7,200rpm hard drive are extra bonuses that are nice adds for the serious computer user, and beat the included specs in the lower-cost Sony and Asus high-end retail configs. The dv7 also has a nice array of ports, with nothing really left to be desired except for the oddly eliminated Bluetooth. Ports are arrayed mainly on the left side of the laptop, with a few ports stuck in near the right-side DVD drive; the back is port-free, which on a laptop this wide feels a little silly.

In the laptop CPU pecking order, the Core i7 is at the top of the list performance-wise, and in this regard the dv7-3085dx is a big winner. Equipped with its 1.6GHz Core i7 processor plus a good amount of speedy RAM and a 7,200rpm hard drive, the HP Pavilion dv7-3085dx was our fastest-performing laptop in the high-end range in terms of handling multimedia like Photoshop and iTunes, as well as engaging in multitasking.

That's great news for someone looking for a speedster laptop, but the gaming benchmark scores tell a different story. Because of its above-mainstream but below-enthusiast GeForce 230M GPU, its framerates playing Unreal Tourament III were the lowest among all four high-end retail laptops in our Holiday 2009 roundup. That's not to say the dv7-3085dx is bad at gaming by any means: UT3 ran at 55fps in 1,440x900, and Street Fighter 4 achieved 60fps at 1,600x900 resolution (using SF4's built-in benchmark, with all settings set to high but no antialiasing). The dv7-3085dx should be good enough for plenty of games, but it's not a screamer.

Design

When HP was designing the dm3-1011tu, it's obvious the company had one goal in mind — to make an ultra portable as sleek as possible. Weighing in at 1.9kg and less than 1 inch thin with the lid closed, the dm3-1011tu is well suited if you're after an ultra portable notebook that has style to boot.

The 13.3-inch glossy widescreen LED supports a maximum resolution of 1366x768. The hinge of the screen, as well as the overall build quality of the notebook, is solid — a good sign for an ultra portable notebook.

The keyboard of the dm3-1011tu looks very similar to that found on Apple's range of Mac Books, where the keys are embedded into the casing of the notebook. Due to the size of the notebook, HP has dropped the in-built numpad, and the size of the up and down arrow keys has been split in half.

The mouse buttons aren't as soft to the touch as we would have liked, and does feel a tad sticky when in use. The multi-touch trackpad, coated in a fingerprint attracting glossy silver, can be frustrating to get used to if you aren't too familiar with the finger gestures to scroll and re-size windows. But to save your sanity, there's always the tried and true method of using your index fingers.

Features

The 32-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium Edition is the operating system of choice for the dm3-1011tu. HP has strangely decided to install 4GB of DDR3, meaning that 1GB will go to waste, as only 3GB will be detected.

In keeping with the ultra portable angle, an Intel Core 2 Duo Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) SU7300 processor running at 1.3GHz is installed, while video processing is handled by Intel's GMA 4500MHD integrated graphics.

Due to space restrictions an optical drive is missing, but there are four USB ports should you feel the need to invest in an external optical drive. Other connectivity options come in the form of a multi-card reader, VGA connector, a HDMI connector, a 10/100Mb Ethernet port and Intel 5300 802.11n wireless LAN.

Unfortunately, HP's pre-installed trialware version of Norton Internet Security loves constantly letting you know that it's looking for a special place on the 320GB hard drive. Another annoying piece of software that's managed to find itself onto the dm3-1011tu is HP's Media Dock which sits on your Windows desktop. It functions similar to the media hotkeys found on many other notebooks and gives you quick access to your media, as well as HP's Advisor if you need help with configuring your system.

Performance

The battery lasted for just over a respectable three hours and 42 minutes while playing our XviD encoded test video on the Maximum Performance profile with brightness and volume pushed to the limit.

Running 3DMark06 on default settings resulted in a paltry score of just 792, which was really no surprise on a notebook such as this. The combination of the ULV processor and the integrated graphics restrict what you can do, but it's the price you pay for portability. PCMark05 sadly refused to run.

With a feature set that is aimed at maximizing battery life and portability, the dm3-1011tu is a stylish and competent ultraportable for those constantly on the go. While it's not going to set the world on fire with its feature set, it's perfect for those that can't get enough of the brushed aluminum look.

Review: HP Pavilion Elite e9250 from Hardware Geeks By Michael

Last week HP Loaned me their Elite e9250 Pavilion desktop which features a Intel Core i5-750 processor, 6 Gigs of memory, NVIDIA GeForce GT 2200 1GB, and of course Windows 7 64-bit.

I only had about a week with the system and since that normally isn’t enough time to fully gauge how well a system can perform, I decided to make it my main machine for the time I had it so that I could spend as much time on it as I could.

The e9250 has a similar design to previous HP Pavilion desktops with minor differences. For example it has the 15 in 1 memory card reader at the top of the system like previous Pavilions. But now it has an HDD and Wi-Fi indicator to the right of the memory card slots and to the left of the slots are also two USB ports.

While HP Pavilions in the past have had two USB ports on the front of the case, they typically were hidden behind a door. This was cool but if you owned a flip camera or any bulky device, that door got in the way when connecting to the USB ports. This made the USB ports unusable unless you used some sort of USB cable extender. So moving the USB ports up top is a big plus for me.

There is also an expansion bay for an HP Pocket Media drive. Which will come in Handy when using the Easy Backup button. But any external or internal HDD will work with the HP Easy Backup.

The first thing I did was uninstall all the preloaded software with the exception of Norton 2010 which I like. I then installed the day to day software I typically use. For those curious I use AIM, Live Messenger, FileZilla, Office 2007, Adobe Air (FedEx Desktop and Twitterific), and Dropbox.

After all that was installed, the system handled itself as if there was nothing installed. In the past I would recommend reformatting the drive and do a clean install of the OS but HP and other OEMS have cut back on the crapware they install on their systems and I no longer think that is necessary.

Excel, Power Point, Outlook and Word all loaded quickly. I was able to multi task without any noticeable system slowdown, which is crucial if you are a heavy multi-tasker.
The system handled all of my day to day apps easily. I wouldn’t have expected anything less than what I got. But what I really wanted to test was how well it was to game on the system.

So I installed the four games I tend to play the most. Crysis, Flight Simulator X, The Sims 3 and WoW. Out of those four games the most resource intensive one is Crysis followed by Flight Simulator.

It handled Cysis beautifully and a lot of credit for that goes to the GeForce GT 2200. The graphics were amazing and while I am not a huge NVIDIA Fan I have to give them props because the GT2200 satisfied my craving for amazing gaming! (Yes I was trying to rhyme)

Playing Crysis with all its settings high is no easy feat. The system also handled Flight Simulator, the Sims 3 and WoW beautifully.

If you are a huge Sims fan, when playing the Sims 3 on this system I noticed no lag. If you played the sims you may have noticed when moving your character around a room with a lot of items in it, the system can begin to lag. I never experienced that with the e9250.

I wanted to run some PC Mark and 3D Mark test on the system but both kept giving me scores that did not seem accurate, so I didn’t want to post them. I suspect that I have some driver issue on the system that was causing the odd results. If I am able to fix the problem before I send the system back to HP I will update this post with the results.

Overall HP has given us a great desktop, but I for one would like one without the expansion bay for the Pocket Media Drive.

But if you are on the market for a new system the e9250 is one I think you should definitely look into as I think it is perfect for the gamer in all of us. The e9259 has a medium form factor which would make it a great system for someone in a small apartment or a college student in a dorm. It would also make a great day to day family computer as well.

The $680 Pavilion P6230y is another midrange HP desktop PC that looks good on paper, but can't keep up with the competition in price and performance. It can certainly handle its own in day-to-day use, but the competing Asus Essentio CG5270-BP004 makes this Pavilion look slow and overpriced.

Not a whole lot has changed on the P6230y since we reviewed its cheaper sibling, the p6110y. Most of the desktops that take a turn through our labs have a similar black, glossy case; but HP adds flashy accents like a soft-blue LED-lit power button and a sliding panel on the face of the system that conceals the media card reader and front USB 2.0 and audio ports. Aesthetically speaking, we're confident that this system will fit anywhere without causing a stir.

The most glaring difference in a side-by-side comparison with the Asus Essentio CG5270-BP004 is the HP's diminutive quad-core AMD chip, which is left in the dust in performance and power efficiency tests by the Asus's quad-core Intel CPU, even despite a slightly faster clock speed. For $30 less than the HP, Asus offers more storage room to offset the lack of built-in wireless, which can be easily had thanks to the Asus' ample expansion space.

Since the Asus actually costs less than the HP, the Pavilion P6230y essentially offers less computer for more money than the competition. Thankfully, HP is more generous with its port offerings than its computing power. You get two USB ports on the front of the tower, with six more ports around the back, along with 7.1 analog audio, coaxial digital audio, FireWire, VGA, DVI, Ethernet, and a built-in wireless networking card. Neither system has an eSATA port nor do we suspect that most users would miss it. However, you can definitely find it on other PCs in this price range.

Before you make a buying decision in favor of HP, consider that the P2630y comes in second to the Asus in almost every test except for the Cinebench tests that give credit to the highest clock speeds. The only system that gives Asus a run is the ZT Affinity 7334Ma, but keep in mind that the extra processor speed will cost you $120 more than the HP and $150 more than the Asus.

Upgraders still intent on buying this PC for whatever reason will find ample room inside the tower for future upgrades. You get a free 16x PCI Express graphics slot, three 1x PCI Express slots, and room for one more hard drive if you can get past the awkwardly placed cage that stands vertically against the back wall of the interior. Also, keep in mind that if you plan to upgrade memory down the line, you'll need to discard the existing RAM since all four slots are currently occupied.

The HP Pavilion P6230y fares well against the competition in the energy cost required to keep it running for a year. Coming in at just a few cents more than $27, HP manages to keep costs low, although the P5230y doesn't have much hardware inside to threaten your monthly energy bill. With a video chip integrated into the motherboard that handles all standard desktop applications and a newer AMD chip, we're not surprised that HP trends toward the more efficient end of the power draw spectrum.

We used the Asus system as this HP's primary competition because their prices are identical and they have similar features sets. We'd say Asus won the hardware match-up; however, service and support is a different story. HP's support offerings, on par with Dell or Gateway, give you one year of parts and labor warranty protection, as well 24-7 toll-free phone support. We also appreciate its vast array of support help online, including live support chat. At least for now, HP has the upper hand in customer service.

Specifications: For the sake of appealing to the mass market, most laptops in the market today have safe design and very similar features. The HP Pavilion DV6-1260SE 15.6-inch entertainment laptop plan to change all that as it is meant to cater for the more adventurous laptop user, whether in terms of design of function.

This model has a 2.3GHz AMD Turion processor, 4GB of RAM and a huge 500GB hard drive. For graphics, it is powered by the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 graphics card. Its 15.6-inch display has a 1366 x 768 resolution that is great for viewing HD videos and playing games.

Design: The HP Pavilion DV6-1260SE 15.6-inch entertainment laptop is mostly white in color, decorated with bold blue wavy patterns. HP Pavilion DM1 gets reviewed: decent battery but cramped keyboard

HP’s Pavilion DM1 is still yet to show up for pre-order on the company’s US site (though the support pages are full of information) but that hasn’t stopped Netbooked from grabbing one of the 11.6-inch ultraportables for review. They reckon the DM1 “fares decently” among its peers, though they’re not impressed by the amount of screen flex on show (you can press the trackpad buttons by pushing down on the edge of the lid when closed).

Similarly, the keyboard is more cramped than on other 11.6-inch machines, with Netbooked blaming the wasted space either side. That leaves you with smaller-than-normal function keys, while the trackpad is also cramped and lacks multitouch support.

On the positive side, it runs at 1,366 x 768 resolution, can handle 1080p Full HD video playback and manages to squeeze in a 6-cell battery with no protrusions. That battery is good for around 4.5hrs normal use, too. What we still don’t know is how much HP USA will be charging for the Pavilion DM1; HP Japan are asking the equivalent of around $686.

HP Pavilion DM1 dual-core netbook reviewed

Somewhere in the space between Atom netbooks and full-blown laptops, there’s a space for the HP Pavilion DM1. With an Intel SU2300 dual core CPU under the hood, this ultrathin is powerful enough to compete with chunkier notebooks while thin and light enough to feel like a netbook.

Netbooked has gotten their hands on one, and bottom line is that the DM1 is a decent machine and competitive with other 11.6” models available like the Acer Aspire 1410 and Lenovo U150.

Out-of-the-box, the dual-core SU2300 was able to handle 720p video on YouTube, though 1080p playback was only possible with an upgrade to Flash Player 10.1.

Battery life from the 6-cell lithium ion powerpack was decent at about 4 hours and 20 minutes under normal use and 3 hours and 13 minutes watching a looped 1080p video.

In the review, the DM1 loses points for its keyboard. While offering a solid feel and good tactile response, the overall size is more what you’d expect to find on a 10” netbook. Hey, I generally love the keyboards on HP’s netbooks, but the extra width on its deck feels like a missed opportunity for something a bit larger.

Netbooked also had a couple of issues with the DM1’s touchpad. Apart from stiff, noisy buttons, it also has no support for gestures. That could be a major disappointment for some users, since plenty of smaller, less expensive models can handle multi-touch.
