If you've been a cell phone fan for a while, you might remember the days when the Nokia Communicator series was the status symbol of a powerful businessperson. Nokia eventually developed the line into the E series, and its latest flagship model, the Nokia E7, is available now for an unlocked price of $650. The company has done a lot to refine the design, and it's running the revamped Symbian 3 operating system. However, a lot has changed since the days of the Communicator. Does the E7 have the chops to make it in the business world?

The good:

The Nokia E7 boasts a premium design and has a fantastic QWERTY keyboard. The smartphone's 8-megapixel camera takes excellent pictures and video. Battery life is also good.

The bad:

The Symbian platform falls short of the competition, and the phone can be sluggish. The E7 has a lower-resolution display and doesn't have an expansion slot.

The bottom line:

The Nokia E7 has some wonderful qualities, like great hardware and excellent battery life, but ultimately its inferior software trips up this business-oriented smartphone.

Design

The Nokia E7 takes a number of style cues from the Nokia N8, which isn't a bad thing in our view since we loved the N8's hardware. The E7 is made of the same high-quality materials--aluminum body and glass AMOLED display--giving it a very premium feel. It's slightly bigger and heavier than the N8 at 4.87 inches tall by 2.46 inches wide by 0.54 thick and 6.2 ounces, but considering that the E7 also manages to fit in a full QWERTY keyboard, it's actually pretty amazing that it's only 0.03 inch thicker and 0.1 inch longer than the N8.

he E7's glass touch screen measures 4 inches diagonally and has a 640x360-pixel resolution. In general, it's clear and bright and you'll have no problem reading what's on the screen. However, with a lower-resolution screen, you're not going to get the same sharpness or definition as on today's qHD, Super AMOLED, and retina displays. The pixels are more visible on the E7, so images and text don't look quite as smooth.

On the bright side, the touch screen is very responsive. Launching apps only required a single tap, and we were able to navigate through the various screens and menus with no problem. There are three home screens in total, which you can customize with various widgets and shortcuts, and the main menu of apps is presented in a simple grid format.

Of course, as we've stated before in our reviews of the N8 and the Nokia Astound, Symbian 3 brings a one-touch user interface that makes it much easier to navigate these phones than previous versions of the operating system. However, it still feels clunky in some parts compared with platforms like iOS, Android, and Windows Phone, so Symbian certainly isn't leapfrogging the competition.

For text entry, you get an onscreen keyboard, though in portrait mode you only get an alphanumeric keypad. It's not as big of a deal as it was on the Nokia N8, since the E7 offers a full, physical QWERTY keyboard. To access it, you simply push the screen aside. The sliding mechanism is smooth and the hinge feels sturdy. The screen securely locks into place and sits at a slight angle to make it easier to see when using the keyboard.

Nokia did a really nice job with the keyboard. The buttons are a decent size with good spacing and a comfortable layout. The space bar is centrally located and not off to the side as on the Nokia N97 Mini, so in general we were able to type at a good clip with minimal mistakes.

There are a handful of other controls on the smartphone. Just below the display, there's a menu button. The left side features a lock switch and on the right side you'll find the SIM card slot, a volume/zoom key, and a camera button. Like the N8, the E7 doesn't have a user-replaceable battery, so you insert the SIM card on the side. However, we initially had a rather difficult time pulling out the SIM card tray, and after about 20 minutes we finally pried it open with a sharp object. Also, the slider volume controls take a bit of getting used to; we found it easier to use a rocker control to adjust audio while on a call, but this is really a minor issue.

The top of the phone houses the 3.5mm headphone jack, power button, HDMI port, and Micro-USB port. Note that there is no expansion slot on the E7. Last but not least, the 8-megapixel camera and dual LED flash are on the back, and the front-facing VGA camera is located above the display in the upper left corner.

The Nokia E7 comes packaged with an AC adapter, a USB cable, a wired stereo headset, an HDMI cable, a Micro-USB-to-USB adapter, and reference material. The smartphone is available in five colors: dark gray, silver white, green, blue, and orange.

Design and Call Quality

Physically, the LG Optimus C is identical to LG Optimus M ($149, 4 stars). It is made mostly of silver and chrome that really pop. It measures 4.6 by 2.2 by .6 inches (HWD) and weighs a slightly heavy 5.4 ounces. This is the same weight as the Optimus M, but still nearly an ounce heavier than some other Optimus phones. The screen is a 3.2-inch, 320-by-480 pixel capacitive touch screen, which may not be on par with high-end Android devices, but still looks sharp and clear. The on-screen Swype QWERTY keyboard is a bit cramped for typing, but you get used to it quickly and it isn't a deal breaker. There are four physical function keys below the screen that light up whenever the phone is touched.

The LG Optimus C is a tri-band (850/1700/1900 MHz) EVDO Rev. A device with 802.11b/g Wi-Fi. It connected to my WPA2-encrypted Wi-Fi network without a problem. Reception was decent, but I was roaming on MetroPCS's network here in NYC, so I'm not willing to draw a conclusion about native Cricket coverage. Call quality was decent overall. Voices sounded nice and clear in the earpiece, with a slightly hollow quality. On the other end, calls made with the phone were a touch muffled with some background hiss, but still audible. Some background noise came through as well, though I was still able to hear voices above it. Calls sounded very good through an Aliph Jawbone IconBluetooth headset ($99, 4 stars) and voice dialing worked well without training. The speakerphone was also just loud enough to use outdoors. Battery life was average at 5 hours and 49 minutes of talk time.

Cricket's monthly plan for the Optimus C costs $55 for unlimited voice, data, and texting, which is a pretty terrific value for the price.

Apps, Camera, Multimedia, and Conclusion
The Optimus C runs on a 600 MHz Qualcomm MSM7627, ARM11 processor. It runs Android 2.2, "Froyo," which gives it a significant performance boost and expanded feature set over devices still running earlier versions of the OS. There are five customizable home screens you can swipe between, which default to displaying Facebook status updates, text messages, and weather. Though I found all of these quite useful, they are easy to change. LG added one visible feature to Android, the ability to arrange your apps into folders.

Luckily, Cricket leaves the Optimus C mostly free of bloatware. The browser worked well, though the phone's CPU is too slow to support Flash. LG includes official Facebook and Twitter apps, and Google Search is preloaded and set to default on the phone's home screen. You also have access to the Android Market, which is home to more than 100,000 downloadable apps; these should all work well, given the phone's standard resolution and Android 2.2 build.

A microSD card slot is located underneath the battery cover, and the phone comes preloaded with a 2GB card; my 32GB SanDisk card worked fine as well. There's also about 170MB of free internal memory. The music player is stock Android. It was quick and responsive, and displayed album art when it available. Sound quality was excellent over both a pair of wired 3.5mm headphones, as well as Altec Lansing BackbeatBluetooth headphones ($99.99-$129.99, 3.5 stars). Video playback was also solid, and videos played smoothly in full screen, with stereo audio via wired headphones and Bluetooth.

The 3.2-megapixel camera has auto-focus but no LED flash. Photos taken were mostly good, with average detail and fairly balanced lighting. Photos taken indoors didn't look as good as those taken outside, but were still usable. Shutter speeds were average, though the auto-focus added a slight delay. Videos record at 640-by-480-pixels and 18 frames per second in good lighting, and they looked pretty decent. Overall, you wouldn't want to replace a good digital camera with the Optimus C, but it'll do in a pinch.

At the end of the day, the LG Optimus C is just like all the other Optimus phones out there on other carriers, which is a good thing; the Optimus phones are the best entry-level Android devices. Cricket's other Android option, the Huawei Ascend ($139.99, 3 stars), is currently $10 more expensive than the Optimus C, and also far less powerful. We haven't reviewed theBlackBerry Curve 8530 for Cricket, but the version we looked at for MetroPCS ($169.99, 4 stars) is a solid device for users that like to text and e-mail; it has a fantastic QWERTY keyboard and good voice quality. But the Optimus C has a better Web browsing experience, as well as a much better third-party app catalog. The Obama administration is helpfully moving forward on bilateral trade deals with Korea, Colombia and Panama, finally abandoning “don’t ask, don’t tell” as its trade policy. But global trade talks at the Geneva-based World Trade Organization are limping into their 10th year. The WTO’s director general recently likened them to a stuck mule, warning of a “grave risk” of failure. At this point, it is only heads of state and government — leaders, not trade officials — who can get the mule unstuck.

Launched after Sept. 11, 2001, in the capital of Qatar, the Doha Round was supposed to galvanize the global community and promote economic growth, particularly in the developing world. Economists estimate that an ambitious trade deal could increase global gross domestic product by more than $300 billion annually. CEOs and development organizations alike routinely call for completion of the deal. Finance and trade ministers all acknowledge that a successful Doha Round would advance efforts aimed at a global rebalancing that is central to the Group of 20’s recovery and reform agenda. Yet prospects for an agreement are more dismal than ever.

The stalemate results from the stubborn refusal of the major economies — developed and developing — to recognize two game-changing facts.

First, the relative economic weight of the big emerging markets has expanded dramatically. In 2001, China, India and Brazil accounted for only 7.4 percent of global gross domestic product. That figure has doubled, to 15.6 percent, and China is the world’s second-largest national economy. On a per capita basis, they are still developing countries and understandably focused on domestic priorities to better the lives of their people. But their aggregate global footprint demands that they play a leadership role and belies their false solidarity with the rest of the developing world.

Significantly, the share of developing country exports destined for other developing countries now exceeds 50 percent. That share will only increase given that growth rates in emerging economies are more than double those in the developed world. For any trade deal to fulfill the promise of delivering growth, the big emerging economies must open their markets to goods and services and wean their industries from state protection.

Second, the slower recovery in the advanced economies has caused many to question the benefits of globalization, making trade more political than ever. Now it is only government leaders, not ministers, who have the wherewithal to strike a global trade deal. In fact, in early G-20 summits French President Nicolas Sarkozy (the current chair of the G-20) and Britain’s prime minister at the time, Gordon Brown, called for direct leader involvement in the negotiations. Those summits, and all subsequent ones, yielded only the ritualized call for a speedy conclusion but, like the negotiations in Geneva, produced no results.

To be sure, leaders cannot negotiate line-by-line tariff reductions or detailed sector-by-sector liberalization of services. But they can do more than cheer from the sidelines. Just as G-20 leaders reached broad agreement at the Washington, London and Pittsburgh summits on the outlines of global financial reform, leaving the details to ministers and international organizations, they must now dig in on trade. They could, for example, agree that in certain industrial sectors such as chemicals, machinery or electronics, all the major players will agree to the same comprehensive baseline tariff cuts. Similarly on services, they could bind themselves to grant the market access their domestic laws already permit and commit to greater openness in key, economic-driver sectors such as telecommunications, logistics and financial services. Trade ministers, following leader-level agreement, could finish the work on a tightly supervised schedule.

Of course, the United States and Europe would have to confront their farm sectors and eliminate trade-distorting subsidies. Here again, leader involvement is key because of the outsize political influence of agriculture that, in the United States, accounts for less than 2 percent of GDP but about 98 percent of the leverage in negotiations. Competitive farmers and deficit hawks on both sides of the Atlantic should be willing to trade away subsidies for boosting agricultural exports through better market access abroad.

Before the WTO, world trade was governed by the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). Given the length of negotiations, GATT was known pejoratively as the Gentleman’s Agreement to Talk and Talk. But the time for talk is over. Leaders must be prepared to get their hands dirty and pull the stuck mule out of the mud. President Obama, fresh from bilateral trade success, should get to work now with President Sarkozy and other like-minded G-20 leaders so that they may seal a multilateral deal at the summit in France this fall.

Let’s play word association- I say sexy, you say…soccer moms? If that was the first thought that entered your mind, then do I have a vehicle for you. Nissan has introduced the new 2011 Quest with bold styling that sets it apart from the rest of the box-on-wheels crowd. I can’t tell you how many looks I got in the local high school parking lot last weekend. When one speaks of minivans these days, the Honda Odyssey, the Chrysler Town & Country/Dodge Grand Caravan and the Toyota Sienna come to mind. Rarely does the Nissan Quest enter the fray. That’s probably due to the fact that the previous Quests were less than popular with American buyers.

The first- and second-generation Nissan Quest/Mercury Villager were actually distinctively styled and featured innovative features like sliding rear seats, but they were not in the same league as the competition of the time. The third generation (2004-2009) was actually a big improvement, growing in size and was styled in Nissan’s San Diego-based Nissan Design America (NDA) studio to go after an upscale female audience. That minivan gave the 1996 Ford Taurus a run for its money for having the most oval central stack console ever found in an automobile.

The 2011 Nissan Quest, however, represents a departure from the past. Instead of being designed just for the North American market, this Quest is based on the Japan Domestic Market (JDM) Nissan Elgrand. It’s been Americanized in a few areas, most noticeably in growing in width to suit American tastes. But it retains the tall beltline of JDM minivans.

Driving Impressions

So, I jumped into the Nissan Quest, well actually, slid into the cushy leather 8-way power driver’s seat. I engaged the Sport mode, and floored the gas pedal. Oh wait, who am I kidding here, there is no Sport mode on the Nissan Quest. It has a CVT for god’s sake.

What it does have going for it, though, is that workhorse 3.5-liter V6 found in many other Nissan and Infiniti models. In the Quest the V6 is tuned to produce 260 HP at 6,000 RPM and 240 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,400 RPM. So I floored the accelerator and…to my delight, the Quest actually moved! The CVT is actually really smooth and was good at matching engine rpms to the way I stepped on the accelerator. 0 to 60 was…well, let’s just say that there was no problem getting to 60 MPH.

The Quest felt really smooth and solid on the road, with minimal road noise and acceptable wind noise on the freeway. The suspensions is soft, to say the least, and is very capable of glossing over bumps in the road. That being said, I don’t recommend driving the Quest over speed bumps at over 35 MPH. Just trust me on this one. Overall the Quest drove like a…van.

Just like sedans, minivans have grown in size in America. The new Quest drove like the Chevy Astro van that I used to drive for a job in college, and that Astro was no minivan. Parking the Quest was a bit of a challenge in my garage and I had a hard time with tight parking spots at work. The rear view camera is a must (standard on the SV trim and above), since there’s no way you can see behind you in this machine.

Styling

If you’ve decided to shop for a minivan, styling is obviously an important factor for you. Therefore read this section very, very carefully. The new Quest will definitely set you apart from the crowd of minivans in the Safeway parking lot. Not in the same way the lightning bolt beltline on the new Honda Odyssey sets you apart, but the Quest sure looks distinctive next to the other minivans on the market.

As previously mentioned, the 2011 Nissan Quest is based on a JDM minivan, which as a genre manages to look narrow, tall and from the third moon of Saturn. While that design philosophy may be perfect for those tight alleyways in Tokyo, in the US it may backfire on you. Although Nissan increased the JDM Elgrand’s width when making the Quest, the beltline on the Quest is still extremely high compared to competition like the Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey. This means the Quest has a shorter greenhouse and a lot of metal real estate underneath the windows, which makes the Quest look tall.

The rear door and glass of the Quest is almost vertical, another departure from the rest of the minivan crowd. The Quest’s front end also manages to look different from all other minivans out there. I’m not sure how I feel about it, actually. I hope lots of moms and dads will love it, for Nissan’s sake.

Interior Comfort and Ergonomics
The interior of the 2011 Quest is very spacious. There is more head room, leg room, hip room (second row), shoulder room (second row), name-your-own-body-part room than the competition. I had trouble putting my left arm on the door armrest half the time, because there is so much space around me. This is extremely useful when I had to install the child seat and when we had to put our toddler into that child seat.

I also found it quite easy to move between the front row to the second and third row inside the minivan. Not that I had to, it was just a cool thing to do. The seats on the Quest SL are leather and very comfortable. I would totally take this on a road trip to Vegas. Arm rests on the driver and passenger seats as well as the second row captain’s chairs are comfortable and easy to adjust.

The second row seats also fold flat, as does the third row 60/40 split seat. The much-touted permanent rear storage under the floor was actually really handy. It was at a good load height and really spacious. Anything you put in there is hidden out of view too. I only wished Nissan had more cargo netting and dividers there, so things don’t just roll around while driving (a $95 option).

The Quest features useful steering wheel controls for the radio, Bluetooth hands free and cruise control, and for the most part the buttons on the center stack are easy to decipher and use. The only complaint I have is the location of the console-mounted gear shifter. It blocks the driver’s view of the climate controls and audio controls just to the right of the shifter. It’s an annoyance that I could not overcome in the 4 days I had the tester.

The rear entertainment system on the SL features an 11 inch monitor for DVDs, which was great for watching my favorite movie, Airplane! It does not have the optional dual screen set-up found in the Odyssey (dual input only available in the SL model), however, which would be great if you have more than one child.

The power sliding passenger doors and lift gate are awesome, and you wouldn’t understand how awesome these features are unless you have kids or love going grocery shopping. But this is standard on all minivans these days. The Quest does have the optional keyless entry system, which is not available in the Odyssey or the Sienna. This is a great feature, you can just leave your key in your pocket at all times, push a button to unlock and lock your doors, and push the start/stop button to turn on the van.

Value

At $37,440 MSRP, the 2011 Nissan Quest SL with the optional DVD entertainment system is priced at comparable levels to the Odyssey and a bit under the Sienna. All the specs and features are very similar in all three vans. They even have nearly identical HP, torque, and MPG numbers. The Quest gets 19 MPG city and 24 highway, and I averaged just over 19 MPG in combined driving. As far as family transport goes, there really is no other vehicle that offers as much space and convenience than a minivan. No SUV or crossover even comes close. But you have to be mentally prepared to deal with the fact that you’re marginally cooler than a school bus driver. No cool marketing with viral YouTube videos is going to change that.

Like I was saying, there is no better family vehicle than the minivan as far as space and convenience goes. Any rational adult would have no problems choosing a minivan over a station wagon, crossover vehicle, or a SUV. But you have to be mentally prepared. Once you make the move, there is no turning back until your kids go to college. So if you are ready to make that move, your next decision is whether or not you want to blend in. There will be plenty of Town & Countrys, Grand Caravans, Siennas and Odysseys out there. Do you want to be one of them? Or do you want to be slightly different and unique? If you want to retain the last thread of individuality left somewhere inside of you, choose the Quest.

Alienware M14x

The good: The Alienware M14x, Dell's latest Alienware laptop, manages to pack amazing performance into a smaller-than-expected body with plenty of configuration options.

The bad: High-end configurations can be insanely expensive, and Alienware's laptop design is overdue for a refresh.

The bottom line: It's tough to find mobile PC gaming in a package that's neither too big nor too small. The Alienware M14x comes very close, with plenty of component options and a size that's hefty, but not backbreaking.

Typically, the difference between a 14-inch laptop and a 15-inch one is very slight, although we generally prefer the smaller of these two options for the sake of portability. When it comes to chunky gaming laptops, however, the difference can be more pronounced. While we wouldn't consider taking Alienware's 15-inch M15x laptop on the road, the new 14-inch version, unsurprisingly named the M14x, looks and feels a good deal smaller--even if it's still a beast compared with other 14-inch laptops.

For truly portable gaming, you'd want to stick with the popular 11-inch M11x, pretty much the only gaming ultraportable you'll find. But this new in-between size is enticing for those who want to take their games on a family vacation or business trip and still enjoy a reasonable screen size and generous 1,600x900-pixel screen resolution.

All this doesn't come cheap, and our review unit of the M14x costs $2,198, which includes a high-end Intel Core i7 2820QM CPU, an Nvidia GeForce GT555M GPU, 8GB of RAM, and a 750GB hard drive. Fortunately, more realistic configurations start at $1,199.

It's been a few years since Dell gave its Alienware lineup a makeover, and it's starting to show. Like the recent M11x, the new M14x has the same angular, almost automotive design as the 15- and 17-inch models of a few years ago. When we first saw it we thought it was a good step toward a more upscale feel, but since then we've seen a lot of sharp laptop designs that go even further toward a modern, minimalist look.

The M14x has the same automotive-inspired grille along the front edge (which is only for show, not ventilation), a slick edge-to-edge glass overlay on the display, and a matte black chassis (the exterior of our system was a matte red). It's distinctive, to be sure, and will feel comfortable and familiar to longtime Alienware fans, but we're also eager for something new, and hopefully a bit slimmer. At 1.2 thick and 6.5 pounds without A/C adapter, this is still an effort to haul around more than occasionally.

Alienware's FX lighting and settings control system is still here. It lets you set the color for the backlit keyboard and the other light-up parts of the system. Backlit keys can be essential while gaming, as a black-on-black keyboard can be tough to make out in the dark.

The keyboard has a more traditional tapered key design, rather than the wider, flat keys many laptop makers are partial to these days. The company has previously said that these tapered keys provide more space between the individual letters, which is better for first-person shooters, which make heavy use of the WASD keys. We're not sure we have a favorite key design for playing games, but it's an interesting theory.

Alienware has always had excellent touch pads, although much of the rest of the laptop industry is catching up in terms of size. The smooth, matte texture on the touch pad feels great under your fingers, and the two large, distinct mouse buttons are welcome. As with previous Alienware laptops, the touch pad is demarcated by a backlit ring, the color of which is selectable. A few touch-pad options, such as the size of the scroll bar, are controlled by an app called AlienTouch, but we didn't see any multitouch gestures such as two-finger scrolling.

On a 14-inch display, we'd expect to normally find a 1,366x768-pixel resolution, but for this much money, it's only natural to expect more. This model's native resolution is actually 1,600x900 pixels, which is a step up for gaming. We'd be tempted to ask for full 1,920x1,080-pixel resolution, but on a 14-inch screen text could become hard to make out. The built-in Klipsch speakers are as good as any we've heard in a laptop this size, and better than you'd find in many larger laptops.

While the ports and connections on the M14x are mostly standard stuff, we appreciate the triple video-out setup of HDMI, VGA, and Mini DisplayPort. Missing are high-speed data ports such as eSATA and Thunderbolt, but you do get a pair of USB 3.0 connections and optional WiMax.

You also get a potentially useful optional wireless display antenna, bundled with a Vizio-branded receiver, instead of the usual Netgear one (Alienware isn't using the more common Intel Wireless Display version of the technology). With that, you can hypothetically beam the action to a nearby big-screen TV, although we've been unable to make the connection yet, despite plenty of experience with the Intel/Netgear version of the technology. Check back for an update after we try some newer drivers.

The real star of the show is the quad-core Intel Core i7 2820QM processor, which sits at the top of Intel's current laptop lineup. It's a very powerful CPU, making it so that only recent very high-end systems, such as Apple's high-end 15-inch MacBook Pro, are comparable to the M14x in our benchmark tests. That said, it's more CPU than you probably need, and most M14x buyers should be fine taking the CPU down a few levels when selecting system options online to save some money.

The Nvidia GeForce GT555M is also a newer top-of-the-line part, and helped run our Unreal Tournament III test at 1,400x900-pixel resolution at 240.4 frames per second. Playing a more recent game, such as Mafia II, at 1,600x900-pixel resolution with very high graphics settings got us a more realistic number, 34.8fps. Either way, this is a zippy gaming machine and more than enough to handle the latest games (although not at 1,920x1,080 pixels, as the M14x's screen resolution doesn't go that high).

The good: The Samsung Galaxy S 4G has 4G connectivity, a front-facing camera for video calls, and a larger battery. Android 2.2 offers impressive data speeds and good call quality. Other highlights include a rich and vibrant Super AMOLED touch screen and a 5-megapixel camera with 720p HD video recording.

The bad: No camera flash. The Galaxy S 4G has less internal memory than the Vibrant. There was some slight sluggishness with some tasks.

The bottom line: The Samsung Galaxy S 4G is a fantastic Android smartphone for T-Mobile customers, delivering fast data speeds and other improvements, but Vibrant owners should be fine holding off for now.

Though it hasn't even been a year since the Samsung Vibrant was released, a successor has already come along to take its place. The Samsung Galaxy S 4G is nearly identical in design, but don't let its looks fool you, as the new smartphone brings a number of changes under the hood. It ships running Android 2.2.1; there's a front-facing camera for video calls; and, most importantly, you get 4G connectivity, with the capability of hitting theoretical download speeds of 21Mbps. Indeed, we got some impressive and zippy data speeds during our review period, improving the smartphone Web browsing and streaming experience. Throw in the preloaded entertainment extras and you've got one fast and fun device.

If you already own a Vibrant, we wouldn't say this is a necessary upgrade, especially since you're probably still on contract. However, if you're in the market for a new smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S 4G is certainly one of our top picks. T-Mobile has two other great 4G devices, the T-Mobile MyTouch 4G and the T-Mobile G2, and it may come down to personal preference, but the Galaxy S 4G has the potential to be faster and also sports a sharper, richer display. The Samsung Galaxy S 4G is available now for $199.99 with a two-year contract and after a $50 mail-in rebate.

Design
The Samsung Galaxy S 4G isn't remarkably different from the Samsung Vibrant in design. In fact, if you were to put the two side by side, it would be difficult to tell one from the other. They're the same size at 4.82 inches tall by 2.54 inches wide by 0.39 inch thick and 4.16 ounces, and both feature attractive chrome accents and rounded corners and edges.

The Samsung Galaxy S 4G features a new finish on the back that makes it less slippery than its predecessor.

The only noticeable difference is that the Galaxy S 4G has a new "silver reflex" finish on back. It's more of a matte finish, so unlike the Vibrant, the Galaxy S 4G doesn't feel quite as slick or plasticky, which is a good thing. That said, we still prefer the more premium feel of the T-Mobile MyTouch 4G, even though it's slightly heavier and thicker than the Galaxy S 4G.

You still get the 4-inch Super AMOLED touch screen, which is eye-catching and gorgeous. The sharp display makes it easy to read text, but it really shines when you're viewing video or photos, as colors and details really come through on the vibrant screen. The touch screen is also responsive. It registered all our taps, and we were able to smoothly and quickly scroll through the menus and lists. Like the rest of the series, the Galaxy S 4G uses Samsung's TouchWiz user interface, and the smartphone ships with the Swype virtual keyboard.

The Samsung Galaxy S 4G sports the same gorgeous 4-inch Super AMOLED touch screen as the Vibrant.

There are four touch-sensitive buttons--menu, home, back, and search--below the display. On the left side is a volume rocker and on the right is a power/lock button. The top of the device features a 3.5mm headphone jack and a Micro-USB port with a sliding cover, with the camera located on back. There is, however, no flash and no dedicated camera key.

The Samsung Galaxy S 4G comes packaged with an AC adapter, a USB cable, a 16GB microSD card, a wired stereo headset, and reference material.

Features
The Samsung Galaxy S 4G is a quad-band world phone with a speakerphone, conference calling, voice dialing, text and multimedia messaging, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. In addition to cellular calls, you can make calls over a Wi-Fi network (there is no additional charge, but the minutes are deducted from your regular voice plan) and unlike the Samsung Vibrant, the Galaxy S 4G has a front-facing VGA camera so you can make video calls over Wi-Fi or T-Mobile's network using the preinstalled Qik application.

Again, the smartphone ships running Android 2.2.1, so in addition to the standard Google services and support for Microsoft Exchange, POP3 and IMAP accounts, and social network integration, you get the benefits of Froyo, which include the ability to save apps to SD cards, voice dialing over Bluetooth, and Flash Player 10.1 support.

The handset also comes preloaded with a number of entertainment extras. This includes a full copy of "Inception," Slacker Radio, Kindle for Android, and DoubleTwist software with AirSync, which lets you wirelessly sync and back up music, video, and other content from your phone to your PC over a Wi-Fi connection.

T-Mobile TV and Samsung's Media Hub video store are also onboard if you want to watch video on the go. The latter lets you rent or buy movies and TV shows, and Samsung and T-Mobile just announced that purchases can be charged to your monthly phone bill.

Design
The brown mocha frame seems very ordinary from a slight distance, but you can't fully appreciate the design until you put your hands on it. The plastic feels like synthetic leather, while the interior of the laptop is covered in aluminum—a nice play on two of the most commonly used materials in laptop designs. Though the design isn't the caliber of the aluminum-covered Apple 15-inch (Thunderbolt) and Dell XPS 15 (Sandy Bridge) ($1,785 direct, 4 stars), the K53E-B1 is a better looking laptop than the Samsung RF510-S01US ($750 street, 3.5 stars) and Dell Inspiron 15R-1847MRB ($730 list, 3.5 stars). At 5.8 pounds, it's only a few ounces heavier than the Apple 15-inch (5.5 lbs).

The 15.6-inch widescreen is adequately bright, with good viewing angles. Its 1,366-by-768 resolution is boilerplate, although you'll rarely see anything higher at this price. By comparison, the Dell XPS 15 (1,920-by-1,080) and Apple MacBook Pro (1,680-by-1,050) offer high-resolution screens. The full size keyboard is better than some of Asus's other models, namely the Asus N53SV-A1($1,099 list, 4 stars). I didn't detect any flexing in the center of the keyboard, and the chiclet keys were as responsive as those of the Dell XPS 15 and MacBook Pro. The keyboard is accompanied by an adjacent numeric keypad, albeit one with half-size keys. Loud clicking noises from the mouse buttons are my only complaints about this laptop; they can be heard from the other side of the room.

Features
The feature set isn't going to blow you away, but it's adequate for a desktop replacement. It comes with three USB 2.0 ports; the Samsung RF510-S01US and Dell XPS 15 raised the bar with USB 3.0 ports, which transfers data at ten times the speed of USB 2.0. It has a dual layer DVD burner and an HDMI port, in case you want to connect the laptop to an HDTV to watch a Netflix DVD. The 640GB, 5,400rpm hard drive has more than enough storage for the average videophile. Pricier systems like the Dell XPS 15 and Asus N53SV-A1 come with faster spinning 750GB, 7,200rpm drives. There's a standard Webcam for video chatting, along with a media card slot in the front bezel.

Performance
The laptop is equipped with a 2.5GHz Intel Core i5-2520M CPU, a dual-core processor based on Sandy Bridge architecture. Granted it's no match for the quad-core variants found in the Dell XPS 15, Apple 15-inch, and Asus N53SV-A1, but it'll easily blow past any previous-generation Core i5 competitor. Case in point: The K53E-B1 dominated the Samsung RF510-S01US and Dell 15R-1847MRB, which run on previous-gen Core processors, in every single one of our benchmark tests. On our Adobe Photoshop CS5 tests, the K53E-B1 scored 3 hours 51 minutes, its 6GB of DRR3 memory helping it power past the Apple MacBook Pro (3:58) and Dell XPS 15 (4:06). This is a ferocious video and photo editing laptop.

All the Sandy Bridge laptops that have been tested thus far have powerful gaming chips. The K53E-B1 relies on integrated graphics, which, traditionally, have been written off in the gaming industry. But Sandy Bridge brings with it an integrated graphics chip that's many times more powerful (according to 3DMark06 and Crysis tests) than that of its predecessor, so it can handle many 3D games at base settings. If you want to max out every graphics detail, a discrete chip is still the way to go.

There are battery benefits that come with Sandy Bridge, although the K53E-B1's battery score of 6 hours 26 minutes in MobileMark 2007 wouldn't have been possible without a decent size battery (56WH). It's a bigger battery than the one found in the Samsung RF510 (48WH) and Dell Inspiron 15R (48WH), both of which scored 3:28 in the same test. More powerful laptops like the Dell XPS 15 (92WH, 6:58) and MacBook Pro (77.5WH, 6:43) temper their hardcore parts with much bigger batteries, yet their scores were only marginally better than the K53E-B1.

Rest assured the Asus K53E-B1 won't be the last desktop replacement with this kind of power and battery life. You will be seeing many other similar Intel Core processors and integrated graphics based on the Sandy Bridge architecture. Nevertheless, the K53E-B1 is priced accordingly, a solid performer, and beautifully designed. But the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) still rules this category.

2011 Jaguar XJ First Impressions Review – Attitude and Ultra

Let’s say you sell real estate. Upper-end homes. You could not pick a better form of transportation than the new XJ to transport prospective clients. Your choice of car will sell them on you before they even look at that new property. Jaguar has scored a perfect 10 on the cabin of the XJ. Although rated as a 5 passenger sedan, this Jaguar is more amenable with just 4 aboard. The rear seats are as comfortable as the fronts, with plenty of front and rear legroom for those over 6 feet tall. The tailoring of the interior is an alluring sight to behold when you order the $4,000 optional Luxury Package. Heated front and rear seat backs and cushions are resplendent in contrasting stitching and piping. The front buckets add a massage and cooling option to the mix. A dramatic sweep of satin finished Elm veneer embellishes the door panels as well as the entire semi-circle beneath the windshield. The carefully segmented steering wheel is festooned with so many aids and devices that it mimics the helm of a Formula 1 car. One of the most useful buttons activates the heater for the wheel itself. Another operates the convenient radar-regulated cruise control.

Like many luxury sedans with sporting pretensions, the XJ offers sizable paddles to operate its 6-speed automatic transmission. But the Jaguar goes everyone else one step better thanks to better displayed crucial information. When you engage “Manual” shift on the central console gear selector, a large red “S” illuminates on the dash and the left hand instrument face displays an oversize number to inform you which gear you have chosen. This numeral is further emphasized by its inclusion inside a target circle. Jaguar is able to offer this bit of extremely useful wizardry because the XJ does away with conventional gauges in favor of a virtual instrument cluster using LCD illumination on a thin film display panel. Every time you change gear manually, the numerical meatball instantly morphs its display into the next gear selected. It is a bewitchingly effective device that puts to shame all the so-called sports pretenders who bury this crucial information in 5 point type on some obscure spot of the instrument binnacle.

You’ll be using that slick-shifting 6-speed quite often, because the big Jag loves to run like the XK sportscar from which it was derived. Pulsing beneath the long hood is a 5 liter V8 producing 385 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. When you’re cruising along at 65 mph in top gear, the interior of the XJ is as silent as a liturgical service. But if you decide to drop down a gear or two in order to merge or pass, the growl of the potent V8 reminds you that this is a big game cat indeed. Like the refined drivetrain, the suspension is compliant enough to keep all passengers unflustered, but resilient enough to tackle twisty roads when the need arises. Pirelli P Zero rubber handles cornering duty with aplomb. 19 inch diameter wheels carrying 245/45R19 (front) and 275/40R19 (rear) plant lots of sticky rubber on the asphalt.

The beauty of attending the Western Automotive Journalists’ Media Days is that it gives members of the group an opportunity to sample exotic steeds unavailable from press fleets. Case in point: in 27 years of reviewing cars, I have never before had the chance to drive an Alpina tweaked BMW. But here was a splendidly royal metallic blue example of the breed, a 7-Series Bimmer done out in Oyster and Black Nappa Leather to the tune of $127,225. Now the 7 is a brilliant piece of engineering, just the tool for transporting you to a spot of desk thumping at the Bundesministerium. But few would consider this 4,433 pound sedan to be much of a GT runner. The standard V8 engine BMW provides for the 7 makes 400hp that provides adequate, but not scintillating performance. Also available is a monstrous V12, good for 512hp and pitifulfuel miliage. But there is a better compromise in the offing this year. Alpina will massage the twin turbo V8 to produce almost as much output as the V12, but without the big motor’s excessive fuel thirst. In fact, the Alpina B7 produces 500hp and 516 lb.-ft. of torque and still manages to return 14MPG in city driving and 22MPG on the freeway.

Best of all, the Alpina B7 is fully covered by BMW’s 4 year, 50,000 mile warranty, which includes a full maintenance program. So what constitutes an Alpina upgrade? In addition to that rocket booster of a motor, Alpina also revamps the 7’s suspension system with stiffer springs and more dynamic damping control to augment the 7’s effective anti-roll stabilization. The tuner also adds a handsome aerokit which enhances the lines and diminishes the size of the sedan. The Alpina kit is available on the short wheelbase version of the 7 rather than the limousine length stretch 7. The B7 is one of the quickest cars on the road, regardless of size, weight or power. While we had no opportunity to time a 0-60mph run, the Alpina 7 feels every bit as fast as a 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL 550 which packs 518 lb.-ft. of torque. In other words, nothing will run away from this stonking sedan on a freeway or a back road.

But the B7 is very much a velvet hammer, thanks to the extravagant detailing and comfort level of the cabin. Little Alpina niceties abound. The steering wheel hub contains the regal Alpina crest which consists of a vertical crankshaft logo. Matching cloisonné center hubs identify the special Alpina turbine-design road wheels. A discreet plaque located just in front of the power 2-way moonroof alerts you to the fact that this limited edition 7 was specially crafted by Alpina majordomo Burkhard Bovensiepen. No detail is too small to overlook in the transformation of this car. Even the cover of the owner’s manual is redone by Alpina with a delicately pebbled green and purple hide so soft it could double as a lens brush.

Although the hulking B7 looked decidedly out of place in the pits at Laguna Seca Raceway, on track it proved appearances can be misleading. The Alpina was not only one of the fastest cars on the street, but also one of the fastest cars at Laguna Seca’s Media Days. Bear in mind that the car count that day included staunch contenders like the Mercedes Benz gullwing SLS, the Cadillac CTS-V, the Lexus IS-F, the Porsche Spyder Boxster, and the BMW Z4. Normally, you’d think any of these would flat run away from a BMW 7, but not when the 7 has been transformed by Bovensiepen and honed to the kind of bright, sharp edge you need at a knife fight.

Say you’re a C-level executive at a major company and you wanted to spend around $125,000 for a new luxury car, what would you buy? What features or qualities would you want? V8 – check. All-wheel drive – check. High tech features throughout – check. There are less expensive cars to choose from, but the Mercedes-Benz CL550 4Matic Coupe fits the bill on the spec sheet. However, is the CL550 fulfilling from the driver’s seat?

At this price point, we have high expectations for the driving experience and this Mercedes did not disappoint. Handling is great for this large luxury coupe, and it remains planted and flat in the turns. The Direct-Steer rack-and-pinion steering graces the CL with perfect feedback and weight from the driver’s seat with Sport mode engaged, and the Adaptive Damping suspension nicely balances ride comfort and handling poise.

Mercedes extended “adaptive” technology to its Drive-Dynamic front seats, with side bladders that inflate/deflate automatically while cornering. Unfortunately, the system has a hard time keeping up with the car, especially when tackling a series of turns in rapid succession. Luckily, this feature can be turned off, allowing the driver and front seat passenger to better enjoy the massage function, which actually does work well.

Pop the hood of the CL550, and you’ll find an all-new 4.6-liter, direct-injection twin-turbo V-8. Rev the 429-hp engine while parked, and you’ll see the whole car rock back and forth, reminiscent of a muscle car from the 60’s. Being a luxury car, the exhaust sound is unfortunately muted, hiding its 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft torque.

To run Microsoft Windows Disk Cleanup, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup, then follow the instructions. This removes un-needed files. You should aim to have at least 15% free space on each disk drive.
To open Microsoft Windows Disk Defragmenter, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter. The defragmenter needs at least 15% free space on the disc to work properly.
For information about using Disk Defragmenter, on the Action menu in Disk Defragmenter, click Help.

A virus?

Run a full system scan (first make sure your anti-virus software is up to date). If you are using free anti-virus software such as Avast maybe you should buy a better anti-virus program. Personally I use Kaspersky, which does not seem to slow the PC down as much as the others do.

Internet connection too slow?

The giveaway here is that surfing the web, downloading files and emails etc is slow but otherwise your PC is OK. Run a speed test (e.g. speedtest.net) to see what speed you are actually getting (usually a lot less than the advertised speed). If the speed is too slow complain to your provider and/or switch to another provider.

Windows Registry needs cleaning up?

In fact, if you don't clean up the registry regularly there may be 1000s of redundant entries in the registry, but they don't usually have much effect on performance. Ccleaner (piriform.com/ccleaner) is free and does a reasonable job of tidying up the registry. There are a couple of registry cleaners available to buy which are much more thorough, but they are very slow. Over-zealous cleaning of the registry can remove entries that are actually needed, which would cause problems. Personally, I don't think buying a registry cleaner is worth while. Ccleaner is free and perfectly adequate, in my opinion.

Registry cleaners usually include other tools such as removing unwanted files, defragmenting the disk, monitoring which programs and services are being auto-started, monitoring disk space usage, restoring deleted files, etc.

Time for an upgrade?

If none of the tips above help, then maybe it's time for an upgrade. This does not necessarily mean buying a new computer. First check whether the one you have can be upgraded.. Tower PCs are modular, made from standard components and in principle any component can be replaced by a similar but faster one without replacing the whole computer. However replacing the mother board or processor (CPU) is not likely to be cost effective as they are a large percentage of the total cost. Also your choice of motherboards that are compatible with all the other components may be limited. For a laptop, you can usually add memory (RAM) top but replacing other components is not as straightforward as for a tower PC.

Not enough memory?

This is the easiest and usually the most cost-effective upgrade. Many systems are sold with the absolute minimum of RAM (random access memory). If you don't have enough RAM it is usually quite easy to add more. The RAM is on small cards that clip into sockets on the motherboard. (there may also be RAM mounted permanently on the motherboard, and cache memory in the CPU and on the motherboard which cannot be changed) The amount you need depends on what operating system you are running, and what you use your computer for. The official minimum RAM for:

Windows XP -256 MB (not really enough, in my opinion)
Windows Vista home basic - 512 MB (ditto)
Windows Vista - 1 GB
Windows 7 - 1 GB (2 GB for 64 bit processors)
Unix, and derivative such as Ubuntu - depends on version, 128 MB is typical

If you want to keep twelve tabs open in your browser, run email and instant messaging and edit photos, all at the same time, you will need lots of RAM. If you run games the game's own documents should indicate the minimum spec for that game. Remember that Windows Task Manager will indicate how much memory is being used. Another sign of too little memory is a lot of disk access for no obvious reason, due to virtual memory being swapped into and out of the page file. (This is known as 'thrashing'.)

For 32 bit processors the maximum memory is 4 GB less a certain amount reserved for hardware functions and video board memory. This limit is due to the design of the processor. It is not really a Windows limit, although Unix systems can use more than 4 GB if correctly set up. (this means in practise that if you install 3 GB of RAM it can all be used but if you install 4 GB some of the memory will not be usable).

For 64 bit systems the maximum memory is usually only limited by your budget and the number of slots for memory cards.

Find out how much memory is installed already, what type it is, and whether there any empty sockets to add more. If there are no empty slots you can replace a memory card with a larger one e.g. replace 256 MB with 1 GB.
Older PCs may only have two memory sockets and allow only 512 MB or 1 GB per socket. Laptops may have just one memory socket. Therefore you do need to check the PC spec carefully to be sure that you are getting the correct type. A utility such as CPU-Z will analyze your PC in great detail, telling you the type of memory used, how many slots, and much, much more. All PCs now use DDR DIMM (Double Data Rate Dual In-line Memory Module) cards. There are several types in use. The type you need depends on the motherboard:
- DDR memory (184 pin DIMM, speed PC1600, PC2100, PC2700 or PC3200)
- DDR2 memory (240 pin DIMM, speed PC2-3200, 4200, 5300, 6400, 8000, 8500 or 9600)
- DDR3 memory (240 pin DIMM, but not interchangeable with DDR2, speed PC3-6400, 8500, 10600, 12800, or 16000)
- Laptops normally use SODIMM (Small Outline Dual In-line Memory Module) memory cards.

Once you have decided what type of memory is needed, chose the size, and also the speed. Obviously faster memory is better, but a little more expensive. You may see ECC (Error Correcting Code) memory offered for sale, but it is most unlikely that a desktop system will support it.

Buy a well known brand such as Crucial. RAM is not expensive and it's not worth while buying unknown brands to save a couple of $.

To replace RAM for a 'tower' PC:

Remove the computer's power cable. Do not just switch it off and leave the cable attached.

Remove the side cover
Add or replace the memory card
Replace the cover
Replace the power cable and any others you have disconnected. Reboot the PC.
Check that the new RAM is working OK.

RAM replacement for a laptop is similar in principle:

Power off,
close the display
turn laptop over
remove battery
remove the cover over the memory card slot
insert or replace the memory card
replace the memory card cover
replace the battery
power up and reboot.

Processor too slow?

If task manager shows that there is enough memory, but the CPU utilization is too high, you have to reduce the load or get a faster CPU. It may be possible to reduce the load by getting rid of programs that are auto-started when you boot your PC, or removing add-ons such as Google toolbar. These tools may be useful but if too many of them start tasks that are constantly running in the background they will slow your PC down. Unfortunately the anti-virus program must not be turned off, even though it may well be the worst culprit for slowing your PC down. You might also find a virus or Trojan program slowing your PC. Programs such as CCleaner or Ashampoo have tools to help remove unwanted programs.

Personally I find that Internet Explorer is very slow, Mozilla Firefox is quicker, and Google Chrome is faster still, but some applications won't work with Chrome. A few websites such as Microsoft Update will only work with Internet Explorer.

Replacing the microprocessor is beyond the scope of this article. It may well be possible to upgrade the processor without replacing the motherboard, but processors are expensive and need to be chosen and installed very carefully. Replacing a Celeron processor with a compatible Pentium processor should be straightforward but it is relatively expensive.

Replacing the Video card

This is mostly done to run newer games that require more graphics power than your PC has. This might be because it is an older model or the PC was not sold with top end graphics because it was not originally intended for playing games.

You will want a video card with an AGP (Advanced Graphics Processor) interface rather than a PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) interface, even if the current video card uses a PCI slot. If your PC supports PCIe (PCI express) use that instead of AGP. Your PC may have video integrated into the motherboard which cannot be physically removed, but must be bypassed to use the new video card.

If your PC has a 32 bit processor and 4 GB of RAM then memory on the video card will reduce the amount of available RAM by the same amount. This is because addresses must be allocated to the video card memory which then makes part of the RAM non-addressable as there are not enough 32 bit addresses to access 4 GB of RAM plus the video card memory. E.G. if the video card has 64 MB of RAM on it, the maximum amount of usable normal RAM is reduced by 64 MB.

The most difficult part of upgrading a video board is not the physical card replacement.The updates to the driver software and BIOS settings must be done correctly, otherwise your new video board will not work properly.

2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe

Mercedes-Benz unveiled the all new 2012 C63AMG coupe, set to debut at the New York International Auto Show in April.

Similar to the C63 AMG sedan, the C63 AMG coupe features a 6.2-liter, V8, 451-horsepower engine, 443 lb-feet of torque, a 7-speed MCT (Multi-Clutch Transmission) with Controlled Efficiency mode, a 0-60 time of 4.4 seconds, and a limited top speed of 155 mph. An optional AMG Development Package brings the AMG coupe up to 481-horsepower, a 0-60 time of 4.3 seconds and a controlled top speed of 174 mph.

The new coupe variant benefits from all the technology updates that have been adopted on the C63 AMG sedan models. Fuel economy is improved with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT (multi-clutch transmission) 7-speed sports transmission with “Controlled Efficiency” mode as standard and a new power steering pump.

Inside, the C63 Coupe gets the same new dash, steering wheel, and seats as the sedan version. The new dash uses a more horizontal design stretching across the car and integrates the navigation screen for a more cohesive appearance.
