How would an actor go about incorporating? What are the tax advantages?

Blake is right to ask this question, but I don’t know if there is a “correct” answer. I’m not an artist, but I am an independent contractor. I’ve have friends tell me to incorporate, and I’ve had accountants tell me not to (and others tell me I should). Seems to me it depends on who does your taxes, and how good you are at keeping records (expenses, etc.).

The Late Shift

As a life-long talk show fanatic, I\'ve been watching with interest to see what Letterman, Leno, et.al. would be doing after their strike layoff. We all know that Dave and Craig Ferguson have writers, while Jay, Conan, Kimmell and others don\'t. What difference has it made? From my standpoint, very little. The fact is, these guys are all solid - they write, they do stand-up, they can interview with little or no notes. Dave\'s show is back to normal, and Leno\'s is pretty much based on his personality, which remains. So, who stands out? For my money, it\'s Conan O\'Brien. For whatever reason, his show has been full of energy, and flatly funnier than anyone else\'s. If I were the president of NBC, I\'d feel pretty good about Conan taking over the Tonight Show next year - unless he\'s at his best flying without a net, shooting from the hip without a script. Will he be this good with a bigger budget and bigger staff?

Well, that is a good point. But I believe Conan will be more than replacing the Tonight Show, he will reinvent it, as IMO O'Brien is much more talented than Leno. Conan has a more spontaneous, out-of-nowhere kind of sense of humor, rather than Jay Leno's routine of various hit and miss punchlines.

It is not surprising that Conan is having success. Conan is a writer and has loads of experience writing for SNL so you can see why he is doing well on his own. He is able to test concepts on live tv. He is definately not boring. He is the real deal. The same old canned routines are not going to last. Conan brings genuine energy and talent to the table. I will be watching.

Your sound mixing favorite got snubbed again this year. I guess the Academy wanted to get away from over-produced fantasy and stick with more of reality. It seems like more than ever audiences are looking for better story lines that are set in reality. There is too much over produced content these days. It is refreshing to see that good stories, well executed by excellent performaces made the mark this year. Your guy may be the Susan Lucci of sound mixing. Tough break. There is always next year.

Very, very few true indie films get made, and even fewer get seen. When Tom Cruise and his ilk are at "indie" film festivals, it's hard to see how the real independent artist has a chance.

The reason indie films don't get shown is because they don't have the roduction value of a massive, high powered Hollwyood production. Our generation is used to top quality fare. It may be too bad, but that's the rest of that story.
