The Szekler-brothers!

There are two players at SAPA Fehérvár AV19's EBEL team, who are called the "Szekler-brothers"! They are probably the two most talented current hockey players who were born in our little hometown of Csikszereda. Some of you probably already know who they are, but if you don't, just read on to get to know these guys!

The EBEL (Erste Bank Eishockey Liga) is Austria's best league and one of Europe's best leagues. This is where SAPA Fehérvár AV19 is also playing, this is their 5th season there now. It's a very tough league and for the first time, SAPA has a very good chance to qualify in the semifinals which will be a historical moment for the Hungarian hockey. Their whole team is a great one, with unbelievably talented players (for example their goalie played 17 games in the NHL) but there are two players who are very close to the hearts of the Csikszereda fans: Mihály Árpád and Sofron István

Mihály Árpád or "Pire" as he is called, was born in Csikszereda and after playing with the Romanian national team in a tournament (in 1997) in New Jersey, he was told that he is welcome in the USA with a 3 year scholarship if he wants to continue his career there. Pire accepted this challenge and next year he moved to America with no money and his parents remaining home in Csikszereda. He then went on and played 10 years in the USA and he got up to the AHL, the last bump before getting in the NHL. He never made it in the NHL, but he learned a lot there and he still calls America as his first home.

In 2007 it was time to change, and he got an offer in Italy, in Bolzano. He played there for a season and won the Italian championship with this team. HSC's current main sponsor, Csató Kovács Imre was the one who then brought him back to his hometown, to play at HC Csikszereda. This team was the winner of the first edition of MOL Liga back in 2008-2009 with Mihály Árpád on board.

It was clear that Árpi was an excellent player and this is why in the next season SAPA Fehérvár transferred him. This is his 3rd season at the Hungarian team, and because one of his (and Csató Imre's) big dreams was to play in the national team of Hungary, he got his Hungarian citizenship (he now has triple citizenship, Romanian-American-Hungarian) and he can now play in the national team if he is wanted there, which let's face it, it's almost a sure thing! (the ceremony was on ice before an EBEL game in Székesfehérvár, video below)

Sofron István or "Sofi" is another important player at SAPA. So important in fact, that he is the first Hungarian player (in EBEL) that ended up in first place in the regular season at the goal scoring statistics! Sofi is just 23 years old, and he is thought to be one of the most talented players in Hungary. What is he got to do with Csikszereda you might ask... Well, his father was born here (and played at Sport Club Csikszererda), and Sofi even lived in Csikszereda until he was 3 years old! Their family moved to Hungary, and this is where he grew up to be an excellent hockey player. They still come back to Csikszereda regularly and Sofron refers to Csikszereda as to his first home!

These two are the "Szekler-brothers" at SAPA Fehérvár, they live together (as you could see in Sofron István's interview video) and they even give interviews together nowadays, not just because they are both from Csikszereda but because in the recent Playoff game they both scored two goals! The 4th edition of the MOL Liga just ended, tonight DAB.Docler won the MOL Liga for the first time in their history! Last season and a season before that they were beaten in the finals, but this year the glory is theirs!

Player interview [Albin Podstavek]

Ever since Albin was transferred to HSC Csikszereda, I wanted to make an interview with him and now, finally it is done. He gave the interview exclusively for our blog, and this is his first interview since he got here. Albin is a kind person, and he happily answered to my questions, I hope you will enjoy reading it. Read on for the whole interview + bonus Podstavek goal on video!

Did you know something about HSC Csikszereda before getting here?

Yeah, I heard about the teams in Csikszereda before, some of my friends such as Strapko and Stefanka played here, so I knew how things work around here.

How do you like it here, do you want to stay in the next season too?

I am very pleased here, we are treated well. I have no worries, everything is managed here unlike in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, they don't look after us like they do here! And the next season? In hockey you never know, one season you are here, the next you are somewhere else, but If I will get a good offer I won't hesitate to stay in Csikszereda! The only thing is that I miss my fiancee.

Who are your best friends in the team?
I am in Csikszereda since the end of November so I couldn't really make best friends, but the guys are very cool here and we understand each other very well

Did you like the MOL Liga? How do you see it? (players, game quality etc.)

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the league and the players. There are skilled players; in my opinion they play a bit rough, hard but all in all they play fairly.

How can you compare the MOL Liga with the Slovak Extraliga?

It's hard to compare them... As you know 3 years ago Nitra lost a game to Csikszereda (I think it was HC Csikszereda), and this shows that they had professional players but you can not compare the level/quality of the two leagues just by playing one game.

Why do you think HSC Csikszereda lost the semifinals?

We had many chances in the semifinals but unfortunately we couldn't score... this is sports, besides physical fitness and good physique you also need a bit of luck.

Do you think HSC Csikszereda can win the Romanian Championship (LNH)?

Undoubtedly HSC Csikszereda can win the LNH and we will do our best to win it!

How do you like the city of Csikszereda? The fans?

It's a smaller town but it is very nice this time around; people are very friendly and helpful! The fans are also great and hopefully we can win the Romanian Championship for them!

You were loved by the fans since the beginning, do you have something to say for the end of this interview?

I am pleased to hear that fans like me, you know this is very important for players, and especially for foreigners like me. I am very grateful for their support and I believe we will celebrate the final victory in the Romanian Championship together with them in the end of the season!

WATN? part 4 (Salló Alpár & Péter Balázs)

The last episode in our WATN? series features two players from Csikszereda who are playing in the DEL (Deutsche Nachwuchs Liga) the German Development League. Krefelder EV 1981 is the junior team of Krefeld Penguine, a team which is playing in the highest German league the DEL! I introduce to you Salló Alpár & Péter Balázs! Also if you didn't read the first two parts:

Alpár is the older one, he is 17 years old and he is in the U18 team of Krefelder EV 1981. This team is playing in the DNL (Deutsche Nachwuchs Liga) and they are currently 4th out of 10 teams; while Balázs (15 years old) is playing in the U16 team and playing in the Schüler-Bundesliga (Student league) and they are currently 2nd in this league! These junior teams are affiliated with Krefeld Penguine, the DEL team currently 11th out of 14 teams.

Both of them played in HSC Csikszereda's junior teams and Alpár was also recently part of the champion U20 roster! (their career stats below)

The youngest of them, Balázs tells us a little about their life and how they got there:

"We both started playing hockey at the age of 5; and later we both wanted to play on a higher level. The national teams coach Kereszte Ottó gave us a few advice and pointed us to Krefeld. Alpár came out here two months earlier for the summer preparations and he quickly integrated into his team. I came out here in August after my birthday and before the actual practices began, we had a week of camp and there I got to meet everybody."

"In the DNL there are a bunch of professional players from the DEL and the national team, Krefeld is a top team here, they are currently 4th in the league.

My team (U16) is in the 2nd place in the Schüler-Bundesliga and we have a real chance to be the Deutscher Meister (the German champions). We have great scoring forwards, maybe the defensive plays are not the best in the league. Both junior leagues are tougher than at home, the plays here are more faster and tougher. I have never played against teams like this at home. The junior leagues of Germany are well known in this region of Europe."

"We do not have that much free time, we are both attending in German schools and the classes are up to 3PM. We get home, eat our lunch, rest a bit and then we prepare for practice. One training consists in a "dry practice" and a practice on ice, 4 hours in total. Then we get home at around 9PM, eat, speak with the family and then we go to bed. The only free time we have is when the practice starts earlier, then we can go out in the city afterwards."

"The team has his own building where the foreign players live, two levels. Each player has his own room with separate bathrooms and one common kitchen on each level. We can furnish our rooms however we want it, so it is more cozy."

"The club owns 3 ice rinks, the main ice rink is a state of the art rink with room for 9000 spectators and two practice rinks. Even the practice rink where we usually play has a capacity of 4000 places and it is very modern!"

"Every weekend we get to go to a DEL game in the main rink where we watch the players and sometimes even analyse their plays."

"We also have house-rules at the club, and if you do not follow them you are fined! For instance if your mobile phone rings during the practice or you are late from the practices. We also have dress- codes which say that when we travel with the team somewhere, we always have to wear the Krefeld shirts or else we get fined"

"This is where we both want to continue our carriers, we think that this is already a high level for us, and we want to play in the DEL!"

HSC's last chance---(LNH explained)

HSC players have a huge unwanted vacation at the moment, they will have their next official game 3 weeks from now (on the 6th of March)! I think now is time to see how the Romanian Championship (LNH) looks like, what happened and what is next. Read on for more info about the LNH!

I will try to run you through the whole LNH season, and believe me, you have to really pay attention just to understand what happened here.:) Ok, so let's begin:

Phase 1:

The first part of the LNH was called the regular season, and 6 teams started back in September (HSC II, Steaua Rangers II, Progym Gheorgheni, Dunarea Galati, Sportul Studentesc and Platina Chisinau). After a short while, Platina was eliminated from the competition, you can read about that HERE; that leaves us with 5 teams to work with. In the end, in December the regular season ended and the winner was HSC II. The standings after the regular season:

Phase 2:

The next "phase" of the LNH was the qualification round. Take out HSC II and Steaua Rangers II, and you are left with 3 teams (Dunarea Galati, Progym Gheorgheni and Sportul Studentesc). Out of these 3, only 2 went on into LNH's next phase, and they decided this with a couple of games. The qualification round's standings:

Phase 3:

And now we arrive at the present situation, where we have two teams qualified from the qualification round, and two from the MOL Liga: Steaua Rangers and Corona Brasov (because they were behind HSC in the standings of MOL Liga). Let's call this "phase" the SuperLiga (as a reference from last season). Now these 4 teams will play with each other 4 times, and after this the semifinals of the LNH will start! Currently the LNH "SuperLiga" looks like this:

The semifinals will start 3 weeks from now, on the 6th of March, and this is when HSC will debut in the LNH with their first team. This means that whoever will be 3rd in the "SuperLiga" will play with HSC in the semifinals!

There are many games in these next 3 weeks, and although anything can happen, I think we will see the same semifinals as last year: HSC Csikszereda vs. Dunarea Galati and Corona Brasov vs. Steaua Rangers. Either way we are looking at it, HSC will play a very small number of games until the season ends: -If they win the semifinals in 3 games and the finals in 4, then they have only 7 games left in this season!- This being the most optimistic scenario of course

Hopefully HSC will have between 7 and 12 games left in this season; and of course HSC's goal is to win the LNH, their only real goal left...

Oh, and don't forget that the Guessing Game is still running and will end only when the LNH ends. So you will be able to play in at least 7 more games hopefully.

Final rehearsal

Team Romania finished 3rd in the last preparation tournament before the World Cup in April! The EIHC Cup held in Ukraine was a good and, dare I say, successful practice for Romania. Read on for the results and more!

As I mentioned in the preview of this tournament, Romania traveled to Kiev for this preparation tournament with a few important players left at home. Unfortunately because of the weather in Romania two young players (Nicusor Lusneac and Leonard Pascaru) from Steaua Rangers could not make it in time, so they did not travel with the team. Basically Team Romania had 20 players at Tom Skinner's disposal.

On the first day Romania played against the home team, Ukraine. In the EIHC Cup held in Csikszereda in December, Ukraine won with 6-2. This time, they won with 7-0, Romania kept up only in the first period, after that everything fell apart.

The next day, everybody thought it will be even worse, because the opponent was Italy, a much better team then Ukraine, at least on paper. Even so, Romania did a good job keeping up against them! 2 minutes before the end it was 3-3 but then Italy scored one and won it. It's important to mention that on this game the goalie for team Romania was HSC's Ruczuj Gellért who had his first game at the senior national team (made 44 saves)!

On the last day, the opponent was Lithuania, a team which will be Romania's opponent in the World Cup this year! So it was important not just because of that 3rd place in this tournament. The game was a good one, team Romania shot more on goal and almost 1 minute before the end it was 3-2 for them, but Lithuania managed to score and brought the game into overtime. Fortunately not even 2 minutes in, Szöcs scored and won the game for Romania!

All in all, I think it was a successful preparation tournament for team Romania, and that 3rd place is totally merited for them. Antal Zsombor (3+2) and Szöcs Szabolcs (2+2) were the two best players for Romania in this tournament, congratulations for them!

HSC's next game is weeks away from now (on the 6th of March) in the LNH semifinals! Until then we have another EIHC Cup, a preparation tournament for the National team in Kiev (Ukraine)! 3 tough opponents are awaiting team Romania out of which one will be their opponent in the WC in April. Read on for the rosters and the schedule!

This time around there is another competition break in hockey which means that there are preparation tournaments for National teams. Romania is invited to Ukraine where they will be facing two "A" league teams (Italy and Ukraine) and one from Romania's WC group, Lithuania!

Let's begin with the rosters. Team Romania is going to this tournament with a few changes in the roster since the last EIHC Cup held in Csikszereda. There are a few key players that were not called in, but instead the staff will try out new players in the senior team. Lörincz Levente (Corona Brasov), Leonard Pascaru, Alexandru Munteanu (both from Steaua Rangers) and Ruczuj Gellért (HSC Csikszereda) are all going to play their first game in the senior national team.

What really happened then?!

As much as I hate reading about losing the semifinal to Miskolc, just as every curious fan would, I started searching for answers, for explanations, what really went wrong? Because I saw what I saw in these games, but I was wondering what the managers, the leaders of HSC thought went and try to draw a conclusion. Read on to find out what did I found out!

I didn't have to search for long, I found two interesting articles one on szekelyhon.ro and one on erdely.ma (which has an audio interview with the clubs president Horváth László). Both articles had short or long interviews with the president and I will try to sum up what he said were the problems at the team. I will take the interview from the erdely.ma article which had that audio file. You can go and check it out.

For the start the president said that they are very sad for this unwanted loss, and they would like to thank the fans who stood besides the team from the beginning until the end! Then they go on with the interview and we get to the first interesting statement:

"It is true that Miskolc "learned" our plays during these games and they had players who's job was to stop Novak from doing anything, and they succeeded"

Ok so what he is essentially saying is that Miskolc analyzed HSC's plays and they played an "anti-HSC" game with success. Ok so I guess 1-0 for Miskolc on the coach side?

So then we go on, and because Miskolc neutralized HSC's first line so well, the others should have taken over, which they did, they had great scoring chances but they somehow couldn't score. And I agree here with him, it's a known fact that this season HSC had a lot of problems scoring despite the enormous shots on goal attempts. Also Hurtaj got injured after 3 games and that was a huge loss, because "One big reason HSC got in the finals last year was because Hurtaj was in the squad!"

Next up, Horváth was asked if he thought it was to late bringing Giblak right before the playoffs. "I admit and I take full responsibility on this one, I made a mistake when we brought the new coach this late! We tried working with "our" coaches, and it worked, but it wasn't enough"

And now we got to the most important part, for me at least: "The harmony in the team is not perfect, the team spirit is not perfect and we think we should change this" Wait a minute now! Didn't coach Nagy Béla say the following words on the 1st of February right before leaving to Miskolc with a 2-0 lead that "The mood in the squad is great, everything is order now"? Or was it? Or it was?

"There are some players who's mentality is far from a professional players mentality! This financially centered world we are living in isn't helping either, they shouldn't talk about match premiums in the lockers every time. There are types of players at the club, who are constantly talking/thinking about the match premiums, before/during and after the games which is very unpleasant" OK, so there are problems in the roster, nothing is that perfect as they said before. And I don't get the players either, I mean players at HSC have the biggest salary in the entire MOL Liga; They had financial problems? They didn't get the salaries on time? I don't think so...

Then the president said that now they have time to analyze and draw some conclusions because HSC's next game will be on the 6th of March (I will get to this later in another post) so we can say that they have to much time on their hands.

Also the National team will have a preparation tournament in Kiev from 9 till 12 of February, and the president said that there were a lot of talks (and long fights) with the National team to not take all the players before the MOL Finals so that they can prepare (the original agreement was that HSC sends 8 players to this tournament), but now that they are out, they let those who were held back, so now 10 players are travelling with the National team. (More on this later in another post!)

At the end Horváth also mentioned that after Franzen's departure, they tried finding some coaches from Sweden, because this was the line that the club was on for a while now, and they found some but when it came to finalizing the talks, they all backed out from it! He said that he could imagine a scenario where these coaches were calling Franzen to ask him about the club, and he said all sorts of negative words so that they would back out of the deal.

So after reading and hearing all these words, I can say that we, and other fans were given a fairly nice picture of the team during this season, but inside this whole machinery was already slowly rotting, from the beginning of the season, and if you ask me it all began with Charles Franzen's departure.

I am not trying to trow mud on somebody or anything with this post, I was just thinking about this and I though I would share it with you. And I am also interested in other opinions so if you have one, feel free to comment below.

HSC Csikszereda ended his journey in the 2011-2012 MOL Liga season on the 3rd place and while HSC fans will be mad/sad for a few days now, I just wanted to let you guys know that the blog (www.hsccsikszereda.com) is still going to be here and get you the news, facts, interviews and game reviews just like before! (By the way, this is the new logo for the blog, and the new header is also up, how do you like it?)

There is still one objective for HSC Csikszereda, and that is winning the LNH (Romanian Championship)! Besides this, there are the National team related news and much more coming up in the upcoming days.

It's hard to see your favorite team loosing something, but everybody has to understand that this is sports, and life goes on! I just hope that you will return here to read the latest news, play the guessing game and other stuff regardless of what happened with the team.

So ends HSC's quest in the present season of MOL Liga, Miskolc qualified in the semifinals after 3 consecutive winning games! HSC couldn't score for the past 120 minutes, and this is not how you win a game. Read on for the game review!

The referee was the same Krcselic Vedran from Croatia as in the first two games. Becze returned in the squad, Biró is still injured. Hurtaj got injured during first period, so he didn't finish the game. Around 1500 fans came to see the game, and they probably left home pretty sadly...

So the game began, I watched it pretty nervously! HSC wanted to show who is boss from the first minutes and they assaulted Budai's net while Miskolc was dangerous only on counter attacks. This period was surprisingly fair, only one penalty was given to Nagy from Miskolc; a 2 minute powerplay which was again treated by superficiality by the home team. Very tense first period, but no goals after 20 minutes.

The second period came, and it also ended just the way it started, with 0-0! HSC was shorthanded two times in this period, fortunately Miskolc couldn't score either in these situations. I noticed some huge holes in the defense in both sides, there were some one-on-one situations but neither team scored. Half a minute before the end of the second period Becze saw himself alone with the goalie, but his shot flew above the crossbar.

Third period, again no goals... The players got very tired towards the end, and that showed in the quality of this game. Miskolc had an enormous occasion, but Kozuch saved unbelievably. One thing is for sure, Kozuch saved HSC's ass a few times in this game, he should be the MVP of this one. The period ended, and the 3 periods ended with a 0-0 on the scoreboard, incredible...

Then came the overtime, in which after an immense mistake by Kósa Miskolc scored by Dubek's goal and won the game....

This is it, you can not win a semifinal match-up without scoring one single goal in two consecutive games....You can not loose a semifinal match-up after having 2-0 in general and winning one game with 7-1... This is just sad, but this is the truth... Miskolc was better in these last 3 games, and the final result is a MOL Liga final for them! Congratulations Miskolc, for qualifying in the finals, HSC is now left with one objective, winning the LNH (Romanian Championship) which is going to be very hard if I come to think about... Sad day for HSC fans, I'm eager to see what will be the consequences after this lost semifinal
