Our brothers and sisters in sunny Queensland, the Historic Racing Car Club of Queensland, recently held their Autumn Historics at Morgan Park for a record entry list of historic racers.

The event included the second round of the Group A & C Heritage Touring Cars national championship, along with bumper fields for Group N, Group S/T, regularity and more.

HRCC Autumn Historics, Morgan Park, Qld

Fine autumn weather prevailed for the HRCC Autumn Historics race meeting at the Queensland rural Morgan Park circuit on 27/28^th April.

With a record entry list of 190 competitors it was a fantastic weekend of historic racing.  Featuring the second round of the Group A & C Heritage Touring Cars national championship, there were 28 drivers competing for Lloyd Bax, John French and Glenn Seton trophies.

The attendance of Colin Bond as Driving Standards Officer was also welcomed.

The other Touring Cars, Group N, were also out in big numbers with 43 entries and as usual provided some exciting entertainment down through the field.  The program included 37 races and while Historic Touring Cars, Group S/T and Regularity formed a large part of the weekend, all other 5^th category entries were catered for.

We spent a tremendous long weekend at Sydney Motorsport Park last November, and packed it with non-stop historic racing for our biannual Tasman Revival.

A big thanks to everyone who attended our Marulan Time Trials and Come and Try Day over the weekend! We had a great day and appreciate the support.

Our next big historic racing meet is at Sydney Motorsport Park at the end of June, and there’s plenty going on to keep you entertained in the interim, with two events coming up that we’d particularly like to bring to your attention.

Up first is a club plate run on Sunday the 5th of May. Participants should assemble at the big truck parking area on the old Pacific Highway just north of the Berowa railway station. For UBD map holders itʼs around P8 on map 94; for Sydways users try E4 on map 176. Please arrive at 9:30am for a 10:00am start.

Then at the end of May Garry Simkin has organised one of the great drivers to attend and talk to us during our May club social meeting – John Harvey, who drove on the dirt in midgets during the sixties, raced Minis and a Twin Cam Brabham, which would be re-engined with a Repco, raced a McLaren Sports car and stomped around in various touring cars. An illustrious career that should be celebrated. This should be a very interesting evening with all areas of motorsport covered. Please attend.

The Australian Grand Prix is a smörgåsbord of everything motorsport and car culture, featuring something with wheels and a perpetually-exploding form of propulsion to entertain just about anyone.

This year the event featured plenty to keep fans of historic motorsport entertained, with the annual historic demonstration fully stocked and a new addition in the form of the Total Oil International Sports Cars race.

The Total Oil International Sports Cars event featured monstrous historic machines from the golden era of sports car racing, such as an 8.8 litre March 717, Porsche’s 935, 936 and 956, and an 8800cc McLaren M8F.

The soggy Saturday that overwhelmed Albert Park and saw the Formula One qualifying delayed meant that race one for the International Sports Cars was cancelled, but the cars took to the track on Sunday and put on a stunning show for spectators.

19-year-old Michael Lyons took victory in the race in the aforementioned March, followed by Alex Davison in a 936 and Russell Kempnich in a 956C. Aussie racing legend Rusty French was fifth in his Porsche 935.

Now that you’ve had a few weeks to rest up from our recent Historic Summer at Wakefield Park, you may be getting the itch to head out to the track again to hone your lines. And we have the perfect opportunity for you! We are continuing our one-day meetings at the Marulan Driver Training Centre in association with the Peugeot Club and are heading out there for a meeting on Saturday the 20th of April, 2013.

The meeting is open to beginners, experienced racers and anyone in-between, but priority will be given to those with the lesser experience. Instructors will be available. The tight circuit is very good for learning lines and smoothness and offers challenges to experienced drivers.
