האבולוציה של המחאה – ממאהל למעגל

זה היה צפוי. הנה הגיע הפיגוע שמאיים לגרור את ישראל חזרה לסדר היום המוכר והמדמם. האם זה הולך להסתיר ולסתור את המחאה החברתית שצמחה לה כאן? זאת נקודת מבחן אמיתית לעומק ולרצינות של מארגני המאבק, וליכולת שלהם לקרוא נכון את רחשי הציבור.

המחאה הזאת התחילה מצויין מבחינה תקשורתית. האוהלים, השדרה, הפגנות הענק, שלמה ארצי: כל אלה הצליחו למשוך את תשומת הלב של התקשורת, שמצידה משכה את האזרחים ותרמה להצלחת המאבק. עכשיו, חייבים למצוא דרך להמשיך את המאבק הזה בצורה חכמה, סולידית ושקולה, אשר תבטא את המורכבות שבה אנו חיים בארץ הזאת. מחד, השכול, הטרור, אובדן החיים. מאידך העוני, הפערים החברתיים והפגיעה המתמדת בזכות של אנשים שעובדים קשה לחיות בכבוד מעמל כפיהם.

המצב מחייב שינוי גישה. במציאות הקשה שלנו אין יותר מקום לגימיקים. האוהלים מיצו את עצמם. צריך למצוא דרך חדשה שתגרום לכולם להמשיך להיות מעורבים, לקחת חלק ולא להרפות עד שיושגו הישגים משמעותיים. אבל מה היא הדרך? כיצד ממשיכים להכתיב את סדר היום? כיצד לא מאפשרים לממשלה ומקבלי ההחלטות להתחמק באלגנטיות מהאחריות הכבדה שלהם?

התשובה לכך היא מורכבת מאוד ופשוטה כאחד. כולם ביחד! חייבים למצוא שיטה שתאפשר לכל אזרח שרוצה בכך להיות מעורב, להביע את דעתו, לקחת חלק ולהשפיע. ה"פטנט" המתאים ביותר, שהתגלה במלוא גדולתו במאבק הזה הוא המעגלים. אותם מעגלי הקשבה, הפשוטים לתפעול, אך העמוקים מאוד במהותם – הם המפתח למהלך הגדול הבא של המאבק הזה.

מהו מעגל הקשבה? זהו מעגל של אנשים, שלא מכירים בהכרח זה את זה, אשר מסכימים על דבר אחד בסיסי: לכל אחד במעגל יש זכות שווה להשמיע את קולו ולקבל את מקסימום ההקשבה של כולם. לא חייבים להסכים, לא חייבים להגיע לקונצנזוס, אבל במעגל יש פוטנציאל להבין את הדיעות השונות שלנו ולראות שלמרות השוני יש בינינו הרבה דברים משותפים ומאחדים. בצורה העגולה הזאת ניתן לברר לעומק מהם הדברים החשובים לנו באמת? מהם הכאבים המשותפים לנו? מהם החלומות שלנו? והכי חשוב – מהם הרעיונות הפרקטיים שיש לנו על מנת להגיע לפתרונות אמיתיים.

בשבועות האחרונים הפעלתי בשדרות רוטשילד בתל אביב, יחד עם חברי האבּ תל אביב (החממה ליזמות חברתית) מעגלי הקשבה כאלה. הלוגיסטיקה היתה פשוטה. שמנו מספר שולחנות עגולים בשדרה, סביבם שמנו ארגזים כתחליף לכסאות. על כל שולחן פיזרנו דפים וכלי כתיבה – והצבנו מנחה מנוסה ליד כל שולחן. מהר מאוד השולחנות התמלאו באזרחים, עוברי אורח, אשר השתוקקו להשמיע את קולם וגם להקשיב לאחרים. האפקט היה עצום. אנשים ממש התרגשו מהחיבור הספונטני, ורבים מהם אמרו שבשבילם זהו שיא המאבק – היכולת לשבת עם זר ולהרגיש שאנחנו ביחד.

הנסיון הזה בשדרות רוטשילד הוביל למסקנה הבאה: אנחנו חייבים ליצור מצב שהמשך המאבק יהיה סביב שולחנות עגולים, ויזמין את כלל הציבור להביע את דעתו ולקחת חלק בעיצוב הפתרון. לפיכך, אני מציע בזאת לראשי המאבק להקדיש מוצאי שבת לאירוע 1000 השולחנות העגולים. נציב בכיכר מרכזית בארץ 1000 שולחנות עגולים. נגייס 1000 המנחים בארץ למשימה (יש אלפי אנשים המנוסים בהובלת דיון שישמחו להתנדב), ונציב ליד כל שולחן מנחה. נזמין את האזרחים לאירוע מסוג אחר. לדיון יוזמן כל מי שרוצה. חייבים להיות בו אנשים מכל המגזרים, הדתות, המעמדות, המינים והתרבויות.

במקום שלטים, דיעות ומגאפונים נזמין לבירור וחשיבה: מהו צדק חברתי? מה חשוב לנו לשנות בשיטה ובחברה בארץ הזאת? ועוד שאלות שיכולות להיות מנוסחות יחד עם ועדות המומחים. בכל שולחן יהיה לפ-טופ, עליו יסוכמו עיקרי הדברים שנאמרו בדיון. הלפ-טופ ישדר בזמן אמיתי את המידע למחשב מרכזי, אשר סביבו יעמדו טובי העורכים ואנשי המילה הכתובה. משימתם תהיה לקרוא את שלל הדיעות והרעיונות ולתקין מהם מסמך דינאמי, אשר ישקף בכל נקודת זמן את דעת הציבור. המסמך יכתב באונליין ויהיה השיקוף המדויק והמעשי ביותר למה ש"העם רוצה".

החשיבות של האירוע הנ"ל היא עצומה. זוהי התשובה האמיתית של העם לפעולה האוטומטית של הממשלה למנות ועדות. זוהי הצהרה על סוג חדש של דמוקרטיה שמתפתח כאן מתוך המאבק: דמוקרטיה השתתפותית, בה לכל אזרת יש זכות לקחת חלק, להביע את דעתו ולהשפיע על ההחלטות המתגבשות. זה הרבה מעבר לדמוקרטיה האנמית שהיתה כאן פעם, בה האזרחים הצביעו ברגליים וברובם לא מימשו את זכותם להצביע. וגם אם כן הצביעו לא היתה לכך הרבה השפעה בגלל שיטת הממשל בישראל.

תארו לעצמכם שכיכר העיר האתונאית חוזרת לעצמה. כל מנהיג שירצה לעשות שינויים בתחומו יצטרך קודם להזמין את התושבים לשולחנות עגולים. הממשלה כבר לא תוכל להתעלם מהציבור ולהניח הנחות ביחס למה "הציבור רוצה". יש עכשיו למנהיגים דרך להידבר עם העם ולקבל פידבק מיידי.

השיטה הנ"ל היא ההתפתחות הטבעית של המאבק הזה. הדבר החזק ביותר, שנוצר במאבק, ואסור לנו להפסיד אותו זה הביחד, הסולידריות, הזכות להשמיע ולהישמע. אימוץ המהלך המוצע כאן ימסור מסר אחד חשוב ומרכזי. אנחנו כאן להמשיך את המאבק, בדרך אחראית, שפויה, אך חזקה ומעמיקה. הדמוקרטיה הישראלית מתפתחת והיא תחזור להיות גאווה לכולנו.

אז הנה אני זורק את הכפפה: במוצאי שבת, ה-27/8, או בשבת שאחרי זה, אירוע המעגלים הגדול. נתחיל מתל אביב, בירת המאבק החברתי (וגם הסושי – וזה בסדר גמור!) – ובשבועות הבאים נרחיב את זה לכל הארץ. נציב 1000 שולחנות עגולים ברחבת מוזיאון תל אביב. נגייס 1000 מנחים בעלי נסיון בהובלת דיון. נקיים דיונים מכובדים סביב השולחנות. נסכם את עיקרי התשובות שיעלו בלפ-טופים בכל שולחן. נשדר את המידע למחשב המרכזי. נבקש מצוות עורכים זריזים לעבד את החומרים ולהפיק מסמך מסכם. נקרין לכולם את המסמך ונבקש את ההסכמה של השולחנות לתוכן. נפעיל מערכת הצבעה אלקטרונית באמצעות סמארטפונים. חגיגה דמוקרטית עם תוצרים אמיתיים וברי תוקף.

נוכיח שההישג הגדול ביותר של המאבק הוא שינוי התפיסה הדמוקרטית בישראל – מדמוקרטיה פוליטית-מפלגתית לדמוקרטיה השתתפותית שהמנהיגים שלה הם הציבור הרחב, והמשרתים שלה הם הנבחרים.

כולם ביחד - כשיטה

בטח שמתם לב לאופי הויראלי המדבק של המאבק. זה התחיל בתוניסיה, המשיך למצרים, משם לבחריין, תימן וסוריה, בדרך התחילו תנועות מחאה בספרד, ביוון - ובשלב מסויים זה נחת בתל אביב. עכשיו, בעודי כותב פוסט זה המחאה מתפשטת לאנגליה (בסגנון חוליגני) ומי יודע לאן זה יתפשט משם? ארה"ב? סין? אולי אפריקה כיבשת שלמה? אולי כדור הארץ?

המנגנון הויראלי שעומד מאחורי ההתפשטות של המחאה הוא אותו מנגנון שגורם לנו לפהק כשאנחנו רואים מישהו אחר מפהק. מדובר בתכונה אנושית הטבועה עמוק במערכת ההפעלה שלנו. אם מישהו מפהק, כנראה שיש לו סיבה טובה לכך (מחסור בחמצן?) , ולכן גם אנחנו צריכים לפהק כאקט של זהירות. כך גם במחאה. הרי המצוקה וחוסר הצדק החברתי היו שם הרבה קודם. אז למה דווקא עכשיו? כי גם אחרים עושים את זה, וזה נותן לנו לגיטימציה למה שהרגשנו כל הזמן אבל לא ידענו מה לעשות עם זה.

למה זה חשוב? כי ככה קורים שינויים היסטוריים באופן שאינו נכפה מלמעלה אלא בהתארגנות עצמית. אלה שינויים שאף אחד לא מהנדס אותם ואף אחד לא יכול לדעת מתי הם יתחילו ולאן הם יתפתחו. ממש כמו שריפה שמתחילה מנרגילה שלא כובתה כראוי. ואם ככה קורים שינויים היסטוריים, אז לאף אחד אין מונופול על השינוי חוץ מאשר לכולם ביחד.

כדי שה-"כולם ביחד" יעבוד בצורה ויראלית צריך מישהו שידליק את הגפרור. בתוניסיה היה איש אחד ששרף את עצמו, שיצר שרשרת שלא תאומן. אצלנו היו כמה חבר'ה שהחליטו לשים אוהלים בשדרה, ולא היה להם מושג לאן זה יוביל. צריך אנשים שיתחילו דברים. קוראים להם: יזמים. היזמים האלה אינם יודעים האם יצליחו, כמה גדול יהיה המהלך שייזמו. גם לא אכפת להם. הם פועלים מתוך הקשבה לקול הפנימי ולא מתוך שיקולי רייטינג. הם אלה שמתחילים את המהפכות שמשנות את העולם שלנו.

מיהם היזמים האלה? איך הם נראים? האם הם דומים למנהיגים הכריזמטיים של פעם? אלה שאלות רטוריות בלבד. כולם רואים כי אלה אנשים מן השורה, ללא כל הכשרה פורמלית להיות מנהיגים, עם אותנטיות מנצחת ותמימות שובת לב. בעידן שאליו אנו נכנסים כל אחד מאיתנו הוא יזם ומנהיג פוטנציאלי של מהלך שינוי כזה או אחר. צריך רק להקשיב ללב, לחשוב על הזולת ולרצות עולם טוב יותר. השאר כבר לא בידי אף אחד. פעם זה מצליח - והמון פעמים אחרות זה לא. הפוטנציאל נמצא אצל כל אחד.

על בסיס ההבנות האלה יש לבנות שיטת משטר חדשה: כזאת שתעודד את הפרט ליזום ולהציע שינויים, כזאת שתקשיב באופן מובנה ומסודר לרחשי לב ההמון, כזאת שתדע לא להיבהל משינויים מתבקשים אלא להוביל אותם. המנהיגים הנדרשים שונים בתכלית מאלה שאנחנו ממליכים כיום: דרושים מנהיגים עם כריזמה חדשה שאינה דמגוגית, שהמומחיות שלהם היא לא לייצר הופעות מלוטשות בטלויזיה אלא לייצר עבודת צוות, שמובילה לעבודת קהילה, שמובילה להקשבה ויצירה מלמטה. כל זה מוביל להגדרה מחודשת של הדמוקרטיה, נושא ששווה לכתוב עליו פוסט נפרד.

ועד שנקים שיטת משטר חדשה אפשר להקים ארגונים חדשים, שונים, שמתבססים על הקהילה ועל חוכמת הביחד. ההאבּ מנסה להיות ארגון כזה: חממה להולדת ארגונים מסוג חדש, ארגונים שמקשיבים לסביבה, מייצרים פתרונות חדשניים, בונים מודלים כלכליים חדשים. ביחד.

ההישג הראשון של המחאה כבר כאן

המחאה החברתית בישראל ממשיכה לצבור תאוצה ומתרחבת. מסתובבת באויר תחושה של "משהו חדש נולד" אבל עוד לא ברור מה זה ולאן זה מוביל. רשימת הדרישות של מובילי המאבק אינה חדה וברורה. ברור שכולם רוצים להוריד את יוקר המחייה ובכלל זה את מחירי הדיור - אבל לכולם יש תחושה שזה לא בדיוק הענין המרכזי. מאחורי זה יש משהו עמוק יותר, חזק יותר, שעליו אין מחלוקת וכולם (כמעט) מאוחדים סביבו.

בשולחנות העגולים שפתח ההאבּ בשדרות רוטשילד שמענו מהציבור באופן ברור מהו הדבר שהכי מרגש אותם ומשמעותי עבורם. המילה הכי חזקה שחזרה בדברי כולם היתה: בּיחד. התחושה הזאת אינה צריכה הסברים, אותיות קטנות או מספרים. זוהי תחושה חמה, מאחדת ומנחמת. תחושה שלמרות הכל יש כאן מרקם חברתי שכולל ערבות הדדית, חברות ואכפתיות.

הביחד הזה, המתהווה מעצמו, מתבסס על צורך בסיסי שהיה קיים כאן כל הזמן - הצורך להיות מחובר ולהרגיש שייך. זה בדיוק מה שהיה חסר כאן. זמן רב מידי הלכנו לאיבוד ואיפשרנו לממשלות ולגורמים אינטרסנטים אחרים להשכיח מאיתנו את הצורך הזה להתחבר. הלחץ הכלכלי, הגורם לרובנו לחיות במחסור או באוברדראפט, יצר מצב (טבעי) בו כל אחד מאיתנו ניסה להישרד - ובתוך כך לדאוג קודם כל לעצמו ולמשפחתו עד שלא נשארה יותר אנרגיה "לבזבז" על הזולת. לא יצאנו למאבקים ציבוריים כי לא היה לנו כוח. הישרדות זה מתיש - אבל יותר מכך, זה מבודד, מנכר, מרחיק ומונע סולידריות.

והנה, הוצת הגפרור, באדיבותן הרבה של דפני, סתיו וחבריהן. והאש הטובה הזאת הוציאה רבים מאיתנו לרחובות. אין תשובה אחת על מה? אין תשובה אחת עד מתי? אין תשובה אחת בכלל. כי הרעיון היחיד שאפשר להסכים עליו בקונצנזוס כמעט מלא הוא הביחד. ומוטב שלא נחפש תשובות ברורות ונשמור את הביחד הזה. אנחנו צריכים עוד מזה, כי זה הדבק המאחה, המבריא והבונה מחדש של החברה בישראל.

הביחד שנולד מחדש במחאה הזאת הוא התשתית עליו ניתן יהיה לבנות את האותיות הקטנות, את ההסדרים והשיטות שיבטיחו קצת פחות אינטרסנטיות צרה, קצת יותר טובת הכלל, קצת פחות נוחות אישית לטובת קצת יותר הסתכלות ימינה ושמאלה לראות מי צריך סיוע ואיך ניתן לסייע. לא צריך לחכות לממשלה ולבעלי ההון שיסכימו לשנות את השיטה. אנחנו כאן כבר משנים את השיטה - בואו נמשיך!

מהי חדשנות חברתית - what is Social Innovation

מאז שהקמנו את ההאבּ הדגשנו כל הזמן שמדובר במרחב ליזמות חברתית. לעיתים אף הוספנו "חברתית-סביבתית" עד שהבנו שאין בזה כל צורך וכולם מבינים את הקשר בין החברה לסביבה בהקשרים של יזמות. בהמשך אמרו לנו שההגדרה של יזמות חברתית עלולה להדיר מההאב אנשים שרואים בעצמם יזמים, אבל לא בהכרח חברתיים, למרות שאנו לא מתכוונים להדיר אותם כלל (נוכחות של כל מיני יזמים בהאבּ מעוררת דיאלוג ומוסיפה צבע ועניין). אז החלפנו את המושג יזמות חברתית למושג היותר מעורפל "יזמות לעולם טוב יותר" או "יזמות לקיימות". העניין, כמובן, אינו במילים ובהגדרות. השאלה המרכזית היא למה אנחנו מתכוונים באמת כאשר אנחנו אומרים יזמות חברתית?

קיימות הגדרות רבות למושג יזמות חברתית. אנחנו מעדיפים להשתמש בהגדרות העוסקות ב"חדשנות חברתית" - Social Innovation. המושג חדשנות מכיל בתוכו גם את מרכיב היזמות וגם את מרכיב התרומה של משהו חדש לעולם. במובן זה, הענין שלנו אינו בעוד עמותה שמחלקת מזון לעניים. עם כל החשיבות של עמותות מעין אלה, הן אינן מחדשות דבר ולעיתים אף גורמות (בלי כוונה) להנצחת מעמדו של הנזקק ולא להעצמתו. אנו מתרכזים בהבנת המושג "חדשנות חברתית", אשר מרמז כי כמו ביזמות כללית, כך ביזמות חברתית, יש מקום לחדשנות, חשיבה אחרת, מחוץ לקופסה, על בעיות "ישנות", "כרוניות", שמטרידות את כולנו, אך לא נמצא להן פתרון. בדרך כלל מדובר בבעיות המחייבות שינוי ממעלה שניה (שינוי פרדיגמטי) ולא שינוי ממעלה ראשונה ("עוד מאותו דבר") [המושגים מהספר שינוי].

ההגדרה למושג "חדשנות חברתית" היא "חשיבה רעננה שנותנת מענה לבעיות/פערים חברתיים" (Lyons, 2007: 4), או "פיתוח ויישום של רעיונות חדשים (מוצרים, שירותים ומודלים) אשר נותנים מענה לצרכים חברתיים" (Mulgan and colleagues, 2007: 9). חדשנות חברתית זהו תהליך Bottom-Up, מלמטה, ובדרך כלל אינו נובע מתוך הארגונים שהם חלק מהבעיה בעצמם. לכן, מי שרוצה חדשנות חברתית חייב לפתח את השדה החוץ ארגוני, היזמי, ממנו יצמחו הרעיונות ה"אחרים" לחברה טובה יותר.

לפי "קרן Schwab" חדשנות חברתית:

· אינה מילה אחרת לצדקה או נדבנות

· אינה עוסקת בשתדלנות מסיבות חברתיות בלבד. היא חייבת לספק חלופות לביטול שיטות מזיקות.

· אינה מקבילה לאחריות חברתית תאגידית.

· אינה מילה נוספת לארגון פיתוח ללא מטרות רווח.

הדוגמאות המוכרות בעולם ל"חדשנות חברתית" הן כמובן Grameen Bank שהקים זוכה פרס נובל מוחמד יונס, בנק המאפשר לאנשים עניים להגיע לעצמאות כלכלית בזכות הלוואות מיקרו אשראי שמסייעות להם לצאת ממעגל העוני ולהקים עסקים; Big Issue עיתון רחוב שמופץ בלעדית על ידי הומלסים ומייצר להם רווח, התחיל בלונדון והתפשט למדינות נוספות. Linux וכל תנועת ה-Open Source כולל ה-Wikipedia, יוזמות אשר יצרו שינוי תפסיתי ומעשי ביחס לפיתוח תוכנה ופיתוח ידע כנחלת הכלל – ויצרו סטנדרטים חדשים של שיתוף בין עמיתים לצורך השגת מטרות משותפות. מכאן יכלו לצאת יוזמות מעוררות השראה כגון: TED – אתר המוקדש להפצת הידע המתקדם בעולם בפורמט של סרטוני וידאו נגישים בחינם לכלל הציבור בעולם.

בישראל קיימות דוגמאות מעטות כגון: Call יכול - מיזם המספק שירותי אאוטסורסינג לחברות בתחומים בהם קיים קושי לשמר כוח אדם, כגון מוקדים טלפוניים, אשר מעסיק אך ורק אנשים עם מוגבלויות; מרכז "נא לגעת" – מפעילים קבוצת תיאטרון ששחקניה הם חרשים-עוורים, בית קפה שעובדיו חרשים ומסעדה בחושך שעובדיה עוורים; Fooducate – חברה המפתחת אפליקציה ל-IPhone המסוגלת לקרוא את הברקוד של מוצרי מזון בחנות ולספק מידע על ה"אמת" התזונתית של המוצרים. מיזם זה מעודד אנשים למודעות לתזונה נכונה יותר.

כפי שניתן לראות מהדוגמאות, חדשנות חברתית אינה עוסקת אך ורק ביוזמות שנועדו להקל על אוכלוסיות חלשות או במצוקה. חדשנות חברתית נועדה לשנות מהיסוד את האופן בו כולנו חיים. תוצאות החדשנות אמורות להשפיע על כל השכבות וכל גווני האנושות, בכל המיקומים הגיאוגרפיים ובכל הרמות הסוציואקונומיות. כולנו נושמים את אותו אויר מזוהם, רובנו סובלים ממערכות בריאות קורסות, מפתרונות תחבורה לא מספקים, מאלימות גואה, מתזונה לא נכונה ומתרבות הצריכה הבלתי מאוזנת. אנחנו זקוקים לפתרונות חדשים שישנו לכולנו את ה"סיסטם" שבו אנו חיים.

ב"האבּ" אנו מפתחים את סביבת העבודה, הידע והכלים התומכים על מנת לעודד יזמים עם רעיונות של חדשנות חברתית להוציא אל הפועל את המיזמים שלהם. דוגמאות למיזמים שכבר נמצאים ופועלים ב"האב":

· www.Ani10.org – אתר אינטרנט חינוכי, המאפשר לתלמידים בכל הגילאים לצפות בשיעורי וידאו במתמטיקה (בעתיד יכנסו עוד מקצועות) – מיזם המחזק תלמידים מתקשים בחינם ובנגישות מלאה.

· 40weeks – מיזם תוכן המאפשר לנשים הרות לקבל אנימצות וסרטוני וידאו ספציפיים ומשתנים בהתאמה לשבוע בו הן נמצאות בהריון. המיזם נקנה בארץ על ידי שירותי בריאות כללית, ונמכר גם במקומות אחרים בעולם.

· Hackathon בית-ג'אלה – מיזם המפגיש בין ישראלים לפלשתינים על מנת לפתח אפליקציות ממוחשבות. המיזם מטפל בנושא הגישור בין שני העמים באופן א-פוליטי ובאמצעות פיתוח הקשרים הכלכליים והיזמות המשותפת.

Lessons from the Northern Ireland Case to the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Driving from the Belfast international airport to the city was a very ordinary experience in a typical grey day. City centers look the same. But it was the accent of the Irish people that felt like something new and exciting is going to happen. I knew very little about the Northern Ireland story till I came here. I knew that the IRA are the "bad guys" and that there are issues around independence there. I saw a few movies with Daniel Day Lewis, and I heard about the Good Friday Agreement, but all of that didn't prepare me to the exciting story I was about to hear.

The group I was traveling with was of Israelis and Palestinians that were in a Peace Building Program. I happened to be a part of the facilitation team. But the main facilitators for this trip were two locals: Suzan and Alistair. They were also our teachers for the basic understanding of the Northern Irish (N.I.) story, mainly in the last 50 years, a period they call "The Troubles".

This is a very complicated country with many sides, stories, parties, enemies, bombs, friendships and betrayals. I had no chance to grasp the whole story and bring it here. But, as a novice, my simple understanding is that there are two main sides: The Protestants and the Catholics. The Protestants are usually pro British. This means that they are supporting N.I. to be part of the United Kingdom. That is why they are often called Unionists or Loyalist. On the other side: the Catholics wish to unite with the south which is the republic of Ireland. This is why they are often called Republicans or Nationalists.

The "troubles" started as the sides could not find a way to settle the opposing interests. The republicans felt they must fight to make to British "occupation" leave and let them unite with the republic of Ireland. The Unionists on the other side felt they must fight in order to stay united with the kingdom of Great Britain. The British felt that they must protect the law and prevent both sides from taking the law to their hands. This mess was a fertile ground for the rise of the paramilitary organizations of both sides. The most known one for people outside N.I. is the IRA which was a Catholic Republican, but there were many other armed groups on both sides, less known but much more cruel.

So here we were, a group of Israelis and Palestinians which is in its own journey to find some sense, listening to this complicated story. At the beginning it felt like this is really a good escape and zoom-out from our own troubles. But it didn't take long until people started to draw parallels from the N.I. case to the Israel-Palestine one.

When we took the political tour in the streets of Belfast, the first stop was at the wall. It was one of walls they call "the peace walls". It was amazing to see that in a city that is supposed to be under peace. The graffiti on the wall was very powerful and colorful. This time we stopped near a wall on the catholic side. There was a lot of support on this side to the Palestinian cause and there were many slogans like "free Palestine" or "end the Israeli occupation". Our group that until this moment was in a good mood immediately divided. All of the Palestinians went to be photographed with the wall in their background whereas the Israelis stood a little embarrassed on the other side. It was a first sign of the tension in this group, but not the last one.

When we drove to the other side of the wall there was the opposite picture. The protestant side of the wall was more pro Israeli. One of the graffiti even said: "Kill all the Muslims" which created a very uneasy feeling among the Palestinians. Our host, Alistair, which is a protestant-unionist felt very bad about this graffiti on "his" side. He made a phone call to some people he knows in the city to have them erase this immediately. He explained that this is not necessarily the way most of the Protestants think, but the impression was already made.

Later we saw many more memorial sites of both sides that were scattered throughout the city. The memorials always "celebrate" the blood, show pictures of the victims and of the warriors / terrorists (depends who you were asking). Although there is a "peace agreement" since 1998 it feels like the wounds are still very fresh and there is a motivation on both sides to keep it that way. This made me think that probably this is a human need that cannot be changed: the suffering and the pain cannot be erased. The history cannot be wiped away in order to make peace. On the contrary – it plays an important role in allowing the sides to voice their story freely. But, there is a lack of will at the moment, on both sides to acknowledge the fact that the other side has also suffered. And this is the missing bit. This issue of acknowledging the pain and the suffering of the other side was also a central issue in our group. Each side is so busy with its own trauma and lacks the mental space to see and feel the trauma of the other.

While we were starting our second day of this trip the news about the murder of a family in Itamar settlement in the west bank were streaming. This has given rise to the tension in the group again. That morning's program was about the personal story of two Irish ex-combatants from negating sides: Jerry the Nationalist and Alistair the Unionist. The question they tried to address through their life story was: Can enemies be friends? Their stories were amazing. Both of them killed other people and were arrested. They found each other thanks to a group of ex-prisoners that was formed to reach more understanding between the communities. Their body language to each other was of both love and hate. They appreciated each other and at the same time teased each other constantly. It felt like they can burst in a fight in any moment, but they didn't. It was a very interesting parallel process in the room that day.

Highlights from Jerry's story:

The lies in the press have pushed me to join the paramilitary forces much more than the violence of the police. I joined when I was 16 years old.
I knew that joining the armed group will lead to my death or to prison, and I didn't care. I just wanted to kill as many people as I could before I was to be killed.
I thought that if I'll be able to kill many people in one occasion it will change the political situation. The thought of killing civilians, children and women did not stop me.

I was imprisoned twice but that didn't change me. It was only after the peace agreement was made that I started my transformation.
I joined an ex-fighters community group and started to sit with the enemy. This is where I met Alistair.
It wasn't easy to sit with the enemy. I felt like I was betraying myself and my friends who died.
At a certain point in this process I started to feel the pain of the other side and the price of my violence felt very heavy on me. This feeling has frightened me because I was suggesting that maybe I was wrong and my struggle was in vain?
I keep thinking that I wasn't wrong in my political views but I regret the violence.

My main transformation was not in re-humanizing my enemy after so many years of seeing them as not human. It was mainly in re-humanizing myself!

Highlights from Alistair's story:

I was not exposed to hatred at home. I have learned this from the environment, politicians, leaders, media
In all of my years in prison I never met the politicians who spread the hatred. I only met the fighters.
When I was 14 my best friend was killed. This is when I started to seek revenge.
At the age of 14 I joined the UVF, a paramilitary Unionist-Loyalist Protestant group.
At the age of 17 I was imprisoned until I was 30.
I never had any contacts with people from the other side. Everyone that was different than me was the enemy.
I always thought that god was at our side. It helped me justify my violence. It was only in prison that I started to realize that god doesn't support any killings.
In prison I gradually started to see the pain of our enemies. When Bobby Sands (A known Catholic Leader) died from at the hunger strike I identified with him although he was the enemy. I admired his courage to go with his belief until he killed himself and I doubted if I would have had the same courage. He was so human in my eyes.
That was a turning point for me – I promised to be loyal to myself as a human being.
I started to see how useless this whole strategy of violence was. I understood that my role had to change.
It was much easier to be violent than to work for peace. It was much easier to meet the enemy in the battlefield than to meet myself in the closet.
If the young Alistair would meet the experienced Alistair he would probably shoot him dead.
I am still experiencing violent thoughts in me and it is a continuous self work. Remarks:

* Till today, after the peace agreement, and while being friends, they still experience fear in visiting the other side.

* Some people in their own communities see them as traitors and oppose their friendship

* Both of them do not completely agree with the political peace agreement but they believe it is a useful tool to stop violence and open a space for building a better future.

It was fascinating to listen to the personal stories, but this has reminded us that everyone in this room had their own stories of fear, trauma and discrimination. The polite atmosphere to each other was very fragile. There were conversations taken in small groups of each side that were not shared with the whole group. That had led to more tension. It took only one word by one of the Israeli participants to blow the meeting. The Israeli called a friend of one of the Palestinian participants a Terrorist. The Palestinians were offended and reacted by leaving the room. It felt so similar to the Belfast story. It took 20 minutes and they were back. Now there was much more truth and less politeness in the room. Although unpleasant – almost everybody appreciated it.

We spoke about the need to be able to sit in one room and have one conversation although we not agree with each other and hold different truths at the same time. We realized that it might be a key to any progress in our process – both in this group and in our region.

A few people were crying in the room. An Israeli moved his seat and placed it beside a Palestinian colleague as a good will gesture. Another one brought some tissue to his friend. We were starting to notice the little gestures that made a difference. It allowed the atmosphere to change and invited more personal stories of trauma and suffering, but this time with a true and compassionate listening.

One of the important findings of all sides was that they fear each other. The Palestinians could not understand why Israelis would be afraid of them and for the Israelis it was hard to acknowledge the fear of the Palestinians. The realization was that the amount of fear is not necessarily connected to the facts and figures. When people fear – they fear – and that is what matters when it comes to their behavior. We realized how useless it was to compare the statistics of sufferings: fear is fear and it has no metrics.

The feeling at the end of this trip was very complex. It felt more harmonious than in the beginning but we all knew that there was a very thin line between the harmony and another possible explosion.

It was felt that a few participants were ready to open up and move a bit beyond their previous "downloaded" opinions. But it was also frustrating to see others (from both sides) stick to their old habits of blaming the other. I had to accept the fact that this is a long process with very little short term fruits.

There was a feeling in the room that we are too "small" to change the overall strategic picture. But it was so clear that in order to create a significant change you can start with a small gesture the makes a difference.

It was interesting to see the important contribution of the feminine voice from both sides. Some women's ability to be connected to their feelings and to speak straight from their heart had a very important and needed impact on the group.

It was evident again that when you convene the two sides together it is crucial to build a safe space and to facilitate it in a way that is both challenging but also keeping the respect and dignity of everyone as much as possible.

The idea of learning from another "case" like Northern Ireland proved itself to be very useful and valid. It was a great opportunity to see a real picture of another conflict, without any attempts to add optimistic or pessimistic colors to it.

I am grateful for the opportunity to travel with the group, witness the personal and group learning processes and absorb so much.

Noise

This week at the Hub's weekly reflection circle there was an interesting theme: Noise.

As we were sitting in the circle and checking-in we realized that nobody has prepared a topic for discussion. That immediately lead to Silence as everyone was expecting someone else to speak.

The silence became heavy very fast and someone started talking, just to break it.

She was talking too long and not making any point.

I was pointing out that it may be that breaking the silence with "noise" has a purpose. That we are making a lot of noises (doing doing doing) in our lives to protect us from something. What is the role of this noise?

The group suggested a few possible roles:

It is distracting, cuts the line of thought and hence protecting us from reaching our goals.
It saves us from the silence, gives a sense of security, protects from anxiety
A sense of control. If I speak I am in control. If I listen I can be surprised.
takes away our attention from what is really important
helps us Not to do our duties
Isolates us from ourselves moving our focus to the outside

And why do we need this role?

Because there are voices inside ourselves that we don't want to hear.

In some of us there is a voice of judgement and criticism that we would like to avoid.

A Voice that was implanted in us in our early days by a meaningful authority.

A Voice that says: You are not good enough!

An inner voice that is an inner noise.

So we spend a lot of time in our lives to avoid the inner noise by making external noises.

And hence we run and try to juggle with many balls in the air, but never get satisfied because the inner noise is still there.

So what can we do? Confront the inner voice/noise. See where it came from. have a conversation with the meaningful authority about it. Actively take our freedom and self esteem back.

also, identify when we are making external noises and distinguish it from what we really need to do.

My First TED Experience Part 2 - Danny Gal

So what in effect is TED, and what’s the purpose of this whole enterprise? This I learned from Bruno Giussani, the director of TED Europe. TED’s goal is to spread good ideas freely around the world. Once upon a time, the kind of exposure to lectures, such as those at TED, were the domain of the few who had the money and the status to be invited to such events. With the aid of TED, the world’s best lectures are distributed in the video form on their website. Everyone is welcome to view and be inspired. From there on, the responsibility is turned over to the viewer.

As I was pondering TED’s social message, of breaking down barriers between people and knowledge, the M.C. and producer, Liat Aaronson, took the stage, and instead of announcing the next lecturer, she told her own story. In India, after the TED conference, Liat took the bus to a monastery for a retreat. On the way, and completely by coincidence, she sat next to Hanan, a Palestinian living in London, who had also participated in TED. All the way to the retreat and back they were busily involved in a political debate (as usual), however at some point they realized the futility of the argument. Both of them, fascinated by the possibilities of a TED conference, decided to put their arguments aside and initiate a joint Israeli-Palestinian TED conference: TEDxHolyland.

By that stage, I was flooded with emotion. Those who know me, are aware that bridging the gap between Israelis and Palestinians runs in my blood. For the last 7 years I have devoted myself to building an international organization, the Center for Emerging Futures, which brings together Israelis, Palestinians and foreigners, not for the purpose of peace, but for the purpose of constructing practical ventures and partnerships for the good of society and the environment. I felt that I must participate in the TEDxHolyland venture. What’s nice about the conference is, that without any trouble, I approached Liat and Hanan during the first break, and offered them my help, which was welcomed. If anything is possible, and that was my feeling at the moment, then why can’t we solve the world’s most difficult problems? The lecture by Pablos Holman, from Intellectual Ventures Lab, nicely demonstrated this. Pablos, a “super hacker”, a member of an almost make-believe inventor’s laboratory (I couldn’t figure out where the lab is located, but I suspect that it’s not on the face of the earth) spoke about a solution for eradicating malaria from the world with laser cannons, a solution for stopping hurricanes by penetrating cooling pipes deep into the ocean to cool the waters from which the next hurricane will erupt, etc. The main idea: The world needs the refreshing thinking of these hackers, for whom there is no possibility of “impossible“.

At the end of the lecture the M.C. turned to Pablos and said she was aware that he is also a great salsa dancer. She asked if he would dance for us today. Pablos was taken aback, saying that he would be happy to dance at the party that evening. The M.C. insisted, inviting him to dance here and now. Pablos, was by now embarrassed. Realizing that he had no choice, he opened his arms and invited the M.C. to dance. However, she told him to turn around – and there she stood, in a salsa dress, an energy bomb in the form of a salsa dancer, especially in his honor. Needless to say that after the event I vowed to myself (again) that I have to learn salsa. As mentioned before: There’s no such thing as impossible!

Another break filled with new introductions. There’s a sense of roulette during the breaks. Who am I going to meet this time? Wow, I’m speaking to Piven, whose work I really admire. Later with Tal, a promising startup entrepreneur, who is developing the next generation of social networking. Then with Adi, one of the founders of the Vertigo Dance Company. It was a win-win situation.

The next lecture wasn’t really a lecture at all. Although the speaker, Shimon Schocken, is a prominent professor of computer science, this time he spoke about his love of mountain bikes, and especially of the youth group he leads on spectacular, scenic bike rides around Israel. What’s so special about this group is that its participants are young offenders from a penitentiary institution somewhere in the country. Shimon undertook the unbelievable: to take these youths outside of the prison walls and prove to them that it’s possible to overcome difficulties, and not just through violence. The pictures which accompanied the lecture are worth a thousand words, and illustrate the beauty and the difficulties intertwined. Shimon told about a boy who faced some difficulties during one of the rides, and went berserk. No amount of reasoning persuaded him to calm down. The language of logic doesn’t work here. The boy didn’t calm down until Shimon pulled a chocolate bar from his pocket, approached the boy carefully, touched his shoulder and offered him the chocolate. The boy relaxed. At that moment he had received love and contact as he had never received before during his life.

By the next lecture, my brain was sending overload distress signals. Thus, I could only listen with limited attention, but with much wonder and amazement, to the lectures by Isaac Berzin about algae energy production, Ehud Shapiro about uncovering the “lineage trees” in human cells, and Oded Vardi about cultural differences between us and the Americans. The first two deserve deeper investigation. The third was a sort of interesting comic relief. The lecture by Haim Shafir, a game inventor (he invented TAKI) stirred me up, and reminded me again about how much more our joint creativity is worth, compared to individual creativity.

With the last of my intellectual and emotional powers, I listened to the lectures by conductor Itay Talgam, and the choreographer Noa Wertheim. Itay Talgam used his wide knowledge-base of the world of conducting, to show clips of of conductors displaying various leadership styles: from the dictator-type conductor through the conductor who didn’t hesitate to abandon his orchestra, being fully conscious that the performance would be of a lower quality without him. The highlight of Itay’s lecture dealt with Leonard Bernstein’s style. According to Talgam, who was a student of and an assistant to the legendary maestro, the ultimate leadership is that which doesn’t try to control, but doesn’t abandon either. It is the leadership which has presence, and causes each one of those being led to surpass himself and, in essence, become a leader for the moment. How do you achieve this? Please contact Bernstein.

Finally, the charming Noa Wertheim who hadn’t slept for two weeks before the lecture because she was so nervous. On stage it was obvious that she was nervous, but the compassion and sensitivity she displayed captured the audience’s hearts. One of her messages was being grounded, which allows one to overcome gravity. It was wonderful seeing the Vertigo dancers floating on the stage after Noa explained the source of the inspiration for the dance. Anyway, after a conference so full of text, the Vertigo dancers said it all without words.

My First TED Experience – Danny Gal

I was invited to TEDx Tel Aviv and didn’t know what to expect. What an eye-opener it was! What could be so surprising at a conference hosting prominent speakers and an audience who came mostly to mingle and in part to listen to the content?

Everything was different and unique. The venue that was chosen for the conference was the “Na Lagaat” [Please Touch] Theatre, the only theatre in the world in which the actors are deaf-blind. The theatre site is a renovated building in the Jaffa port, headed by theatre innovator Adina Tal, one of the most interesting leaders and social entrepreneurs I have ever met. What fun and how meaningful it was to request a latte in sign language from the deaf waiters.

As I drank my coffee, a woman whom I didn’t know came up to me smiling and asked how I was doing. I smiled back, and strained my brain trying to remember where I knew her from. It quickly became apparent that I didn’t know her at all, and yet, she had approached me because that’s what they do here. We quickly found that we had a lot in common, and the conversation flowed. I realized that I didn’t have to be shy here, that it would be an utter waste of time talking to people whom I already know, although much safer and more comfortable.

I started approaching people who looked available, and thus I ended up speaking with the CEO of a large cellular company, with a world renowned Israeli artist, whose work I admire, with a conductor and a lecturer on leadership, with the founder of a well known dance troupe, and with many interesting and colorful people who are less well known. Suddenly it seemed a pity that we were invited into the auditorium for the official program to begin.

I went in and sat next to one of my new acquaintances from the talks in the lobby. The theatre was attractive and elaborate; the stage was designed like the living-room in someone’s home, with a comfortable armchair, a large wooden globe and a warm rug. I felt as though someone had put a lot of thought and effort into the design, right down to the smallest details. The lights were dimmed, the sound was huge and impressive, and the hosts of the event, who were also the organizers and producers, took the stage. Beautiful people with sparkling eyes, a lot of excitement and a sense that something very big was about to happen here.

The event was broadcast live over the Internet to many locations in Israel and abroad, so those of us in the auditorium sensed that we were in a place that is affecting the world and being affected. A thrilling sense of power and meaning.

The first speech was by the principal of the Bialik-Rogozin School, Karen Tal. The school is an educational campus serving the children of Tel Aviv’s foreign workers, and other children from disadvantaged families. The school, which was in danger of closing down 5 years ago, now attains success rates above the national matriculation average, and the successes are not only seen through the grades, but rather in the commitment and love that the children receive from the staff. The story illustrates the importance of trustworthy and enthusiastic leadership, against all odds. At the end of the lecture, and coming as a complete surprise, the children’s’ choir came onstage, singing two songs in sharp, clear voices that didn’t leave a dry eye in the audience.

The next presentation was by Shimon Steinberg, an internationally renowned entomologist, who developed a method for biological pest control. The method distinguishes between “bad” bugs which are harmful to plants and destroy crops, and “beneficial” bugs which kill the bad guys without damaging the plants. It was amazing to see how the “beneficial” bugs ruthlessly exterminated the bad guys, and all this naturally and without chemicals.

This story made me think: What are the “bad bugs” in my life? (fears? Emails? Schedules which are too tight?) And how can I eliminate them by means of “beneficial bugs”? I was left pondering this question while in the background I listened to more brilliant lectures about image processing (Ariel Shamir), the psychology behind auctions (Yair Tauman) – and then…

Then a grand woman, Hedy Schleifer, took the stage to talk about “The Power of Human Relationships”. From the moment she got on stage it was clear that standing before us was an enlightened woman, connected to herself and to her emotions. As if with the wave of a magic wand, she transformed the space between her and us (the audience in the auditorium and the audiences around the world) so it became uncontaminated and more connected. She reminded us to take responsibility for our lives, our loves and in paying attention to others. It sounded so simple that I believed her, and as soon as I started listening to her (and not just hearing her) the “bad bugs” started dying inside of me. Thank you, Hedy.

It was an editorial feat by the organizers to put Asaf Avidan, the singer, right after Hedi. I never knew him before, I saw a youth of about 23 taking the stage in his undershirt, with his guitar, what could possibly be? As soon as the man opened his mouth – the sound that came out was unbelievable: clear, high, penetrating, true, real and brave. This is a man who is not afraid of himself, and therefore he is not afraid to be himself. While listening to him, more “bad bugs died. Tomorrow I’m buying a CD. Real psychological extermination.
