Talk on Charity

Talk given in church 10/18/12:

Good morning brothers and sisters,

I am so grateful for this opportunity to share my thoughts and feelings with you today. I love that in our church we have these opportunities to grow and develop spiritually, that we don't have just one paid preacher or pastor, but that all are given opportunities to serve and contribute that we all might be strengthened and share and learn.

D&C: Let one speak at a time and all listen unto his sayings, that when all have spoken that all may be edified of all, and that every man may have an equal privilege.” Just another testimony that the Lord is the head of this church, and is no respecter of persons, but loves all his children and wants us all to develop and grow. I just love that about the gospel, and I'm grateful for this opportunity to speak today.

I pray that the spirit of the Lord, who is the true teacher, will be here as I share these thoughts with you my brothers and sisters.

The talk I was assigned is from the most recent conference by Elder Hales, entitled, "Being a more Chrsitian Christian."

I'd like to begin with a question: "How can you tell if someone is truly converted to Jesus Christ?"

Marvin J. Ashton asked this same question at a fireside, and for forty-five minutes people gave thoughtful answers which he wrote on the board. He then erased them all, and proceeded to teach this important principle... that the best indicator that we are progressing spiritually and coming unto Christ is the WAY WE TREAT OTHER PEOPLE. Love that! Really simple, but profound.

The defining, crowning characteristic of a true Christian is CHARITY.

What is charity? In the scriptures we learn that Charity is the Pure love of Christ, it's the greatest gift of God, and it endureth forever! And I love the description Moroni gives: " And charity suffereth long, and is kind, and envieth not, and is not puffed up, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, and rejoiceth not in iniquity but rejoiceth in the truth, beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.”

“Perhaps the greatest charity comes when we are kind to each other, when we don’t judge or categorize someone else, when we simply give each other the benefit of the doubt or remain quiet. Charity is accepting someone’s differences, weaknesses, and shortcomings; having patience with someone who has let us down; or resisting the impulse to become offended when someone doesn’t handle something the way we might have hoped. Charity is refusing to take advantage of another’s weakness and being willing to forgive someone who has hurt us. Charity is expecting the best of each other”

Clearly, this principle matters A LOT to Heavenly Father. 2nd Nephi 26:30: “Wherefore, the Lord God hath given a commandment that all men should have charity, which charity is love. And except they should have charity they are nothing." And I LOVE this scripture in 1 Corinithians 13:2. “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.” And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profiteth me nothing.

REALLY? Could that really be true? So if I have faith to move mountains, give my body to be burned, I am NOTHING without Charity? That's EXACTLY what it says. Just shows how important this principle is to Heavenly Father. Without charity, we CANNOT be saved in the kingdom of God.

But the problem is- unfortunately, Charity does not come naturally to any of us!!! Or as Sheri Dew says, "Our charity sometimes faileth." Charity never faileth... but OUR charity does! This is a fallen world and we have a carnal nature. "For the natural man is an enemy to God." But even so, we are called upon to even love our enemies. It's easy to love someone who is loveable, is it not?! The REAL test is to love those who offend or annoy or test our patience in some way. That is when our true character is revealed.

Personal experience I'd like to share: I’d love to say that our home is perfectly peaceful all the time, but um, that’s not the truth. It’s something we struggle with sometimes- we’re working on it. We have a joke when we sing “there is beauty all around when there’s LOVE at HOME, we switch the words to “when there’s no one home” haha! Our kids are all strong willed. They'll be leaders for sure. If I had only known what contention did to a mother, I would have been a much better child.

We know that “contention cometh from the devil, who stirreth up the hearts of the children of men with anger one toward another.” All I want is Peace and Harmony in the home!! Every Christmas, that is what I ask for… peace and harmony. So this issue matters so much to me, that I decided to take it to the Lord. I learned once that when we go to the temple, we should go with a question or concern. The temple is truly a house of revelation. So my question was, HOW can we have peace in our home and in our family? In the temple, I said a prayer and felt prompted to open the scriptures, and turned to 4^th Nephi, looked down at the page, and this is what I read: “And it came to pass in the thirty and sixth year, the people were all converted unto the Lord, upon all the face of the land, both Nephites and Lamanites, and there were no contentions and disputations among them, and every man did deal justly one with another.”

I said to myself- WHOA. This is my answer!! Read on!! I wanted to know how these people managed to have NO contentions and disputations? So I kept reading, and again, the answer was revealed: “And it came to pass that there was no contention in the land, because of the love of God which did dwell in the hearts of the people. 16 And there were no envyings, nor strifes, nor tumults, nor whoredoms, nor lyings, nor murders, nor any manner of lasciviousness; and surely there could not be a happier people among all the people who had been created by the hand of God.”

So that was my answer! That experience taught me- that first of all, the Lord hears and answers our prayers. And that we need to instill the LOVE of God in their hearts., through testimony, through teaching gospel principles so the spirit can speak to them and help change their natures. And mostly, through example- modeling this love.

SO again, we must have Charity and without it we are NOTHING. And the problem is- the natural man is an enemy to God. I'm really big on goal setting- Set a goal, make a commitment, follow through and make it happen! Not going to get angry in traffic, not going to be impatient with my children, not going to be selfish, covetous, or discouraged. Has anyone else tried to go it alone- on your own strength and willpower? How'd that work for you? Didn’t work well for me either!! It's demoralizing isn't it?! The truth is, when it comes to charity, our willpower simply is not enough!

So what can we do?? The Answer is found in the scriptures AGAIN. :) Mormon exhorts us to " pray unto the Father with all the energy of heart, that ye may be filled with this love, which he hath bestowed upon all who are true followers of his Son, Jesus Christ." Looks like our goal setting, our simple willpower will not be enough to change our natures. We must rely upon the strength of the Lord for this GIFT. Again, GIFT! Not something we can aquire on our own!! Given to us by our request. Mormon also admonishes us to "cleave unto charity." In this context "cleave" means to bind one's self to, or be united with, unwaveringly. I testify that as we do so, our natures truly can be changed! He WILL make "weak things become strong unto us" as we put our trust in Him.

I've always loved Stephen R. Covey's analogy of the airplane. Did you know that an Airplane is off course 90% of the time? The pilots have a flight plan... they know exactly where they are going, but during the course of the flight, a variety of factors like... wind, rain, turbulance, air traffic, etc. cause them to slightly deviate from the plan. But they almost always reach their final destination. How can this be? During the flight the pilots receive constant feedback. Based on that feedback, they make adjustments and corrections so that time and time again, they keep returning to the flight plan. The hope lies in the vision- the plan and ability to get back on track. I love that analogy and think it applies here- that when we make mistakes... when our charity faileth, we too can continually repent, make corrections and our vision- as we look to the Savior, we WILL arrive at our final desitation. There is truly HOPE for us through the atonement of Jesus Christ.

Another characteristic of a true Christian is the willingness to "feed his sheep" and to bring others unto Him. And I think the best way we can do that is by developing this kind of LOVE. The Lord said, "As I have loved you, love one another. By this shall men know, ye are my disciples." As we seek to put off the natural man- others will be drawn to us. They will see the joy the gospel brings into our lives, and they will want to experience that joy themselves. Others will notice this change of heart, and those who are searching for Him will see his image engraven upon our countenances as we take upon ourselves His holy name and stand as a witness of Him.

I'd like to end by revisiting my original question... "Have we have truly been converted to Jesus Christ?" Have we experienced this mighty change of heart? Does the way we treat others reflect that? I invite us all to pray to the Father individually and as families for this spiritual gift, that we might more fully converted unto Christ. That we might discover the kind of joy and unity those true Christians felt in 4th Nephi. That we might glorify Him through the way we treat His children.

I’m so grateful for our Savior Jesus Christ- who gave us the ultimate example of Charity- when He gave his life for us. “Truly greater love hath no man than this, than he layeth down his life for his friends”. I testify of Him and of His love in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Back to School

Bittersweet day. Mostly bitter. I'll miss these sweet faces during the day, but I'm glad the school year is starting again. I LOVE the routine and structure the school day brings. The kids are excited to meet new friends here, but there has been a LOT of anxiety lately from Celeste- expressing worry that maybe people won't like her repeatedly throughout the day. She misses her old friends. I really feel for her. It's tough to move. But I know she'll be fine. I told her when she feels that way, to say a prayer in her mind to Heavenly Father, and that He is always there to comfort her.

I also reminded her that when she starts feeling self-conscious, it's time to forget herself, to look around and smile and think about how to help and serve others. Consider their needs and their feelings, and then go to work and do what you can to help them and by so doing, help the Lord. That kind of life brings true peace and joy. Wish I had learned that sooner in life!! It wasn't until college that I really understood that truth. My hope for her, and all my children is that they learn and apply that principle, because only by losing themselves in service to others and to God will they be truly happy.

Love these children. They drive me absolutely crazy sometimes. But I love them just the same.

Sweet Jakey put on his backpack too, and wore it around the house most of the day. He was so bummed to be home alone without them. But he felt better when I reassured him that I needed him around the house- as he is the big man of the house during the day.

These pics make me sad. I know these days will be over all too soon.

Must remember to cherish these moments before they're gone.

Pumpkin Patch!

I've been having this problem lately. I keep getting these strong impressions to BLOG again. But I feel so overwhelmed by the thought since I'm like a year behind, that I always seem to talk my way out of it (it's too late, I have too many other things to do, where do I start? no one reads it anyway, etc). Can anyone relate? This is not just a problem when it comes to blogging, but just life in general. I'll set a goal for myself, and sometimes won't achieve it- and then I get discouraged and talk myself out of even trying. It's demoralizing, isn't it?! But I realized the best thing to do is just START dang it!! Just jump in where I'm at. I was feeling like I'd probably always be behind since I have to back track so much. But I'm going to just jump in and have a fresh start TODAY and when I find time, I'll start catching up on missed posts from the last year. It feels so good to do the thing I had been avoiding. We gotta start somewhere! So here goes!!

We've decided to make every Saturday morning an excuse to go on a family outing. It's healthy to get out of the house, and have some free time together. But it seems it doesn't happen these days unless we schedule it!! I think it's all about scheduling the TIME slot in the week- making that non-negotiable, but leaving the activity open for suggestions. That way there's some flexibility, but there is also consistency. So this Sat, we went to Craven Farm in Snohomish, and had a blast!! We haven't had too many outings with all 6 kids yet. It is still a tough adjustment period right now. I've got to seriously up my game. Is it ever WORK keeping up with all these balls of energy! But we'll get used to it. The kids worked really well together tonight. Daddy assigned everyone a job (tail, ears, etc, and we worked as a team to create this guy. I know we're so weird. But it was a fun!! Hope you're all enjoying this time of year. It's my favorite!

Here we go again!

Ok, these last few months have been an absolute whirlwind for our family!!! Seriously, sometimes I think we should have our own reality show. Let me just say, moving 5 TRUCKS (3.5 worth of business inventory, 1.5 personal) across the country 9 months pregnant with young kids is beyond crazy (and EXPENSIVE)!! I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy! (Don't actually have any enemies, but you know what I mean.) I've pretty much made up my mind, this home will be my final resting place... because I will NEVER do that again. But we made it! And we could not be happier here in our new home. Now that we're finally moved in, and I've decorated this place, I'll post some pics soon. SO grateful everything is coming together. We're settling in here now, and life is beginning to regain some sense of normalcy. We've resumed our family routines (snuggle scriptures, hudson hugs, etc), baby Nate is healthy and happy, the brutal afterbirth pains are gone, Jon starts work soon, we're going to church in our new ward this weekend, and I'm finally blogging again. Life is good!!! Thank you God.

Christmas Joys

Here are a few activities we enjoyed this Christmas.

We have this fun tradition of cutting down our own Christmas tree. My manly man and his little side-kick had the most fun with this...

But as fun as this is, and as delightful as a real Christmas tree smells in the home, we're now reconsidering. This very well might be the last year of this tradition. Here it is FEBRUARY 25th, and we're STILL finding these darn needles around the house!! I'm still finding them in the vacuum, in the heater vents, and some have even gotten stuck in the carpet. Let me tell ya, stepping on those things feels like real needles!

But if we ever do this again, we've definitely found the best tree farm around!! This local tree farm offers free hot chocolate and cookies for the kids, visits from Santa, face-painting, and free homemade ornaments for the kids. A sweet family runs this place, and I want to help support them. Message me if you're local and want more deets for next year!

And our thoughtful aunt Pam has this tradition of sending us homemade ornaments every year! We have them going back to 2004. Each one is such a treasure to our family!

Christmas Morning! Kids got beyond spoiled this year. We got a Wii for the family (I had sworn off video games for the kids- but we finally comprimised that active/fitness games, and music games that involve the entire family would be ok). They also each got 3 presents from Santa. Afterall- if Jesus only got 3, who are we to get more?!

But the best present of all...

As if it's not already a circus around here... meet Barnum and Bailey!! Our new pet guinea pigs. We did tons of research before we decided on a great pet for kids, and I'm so glad we went with guniea pigs! They are the most gentle animals, they make amusing noises, low maintenance, they're soft and cuddly- and they aren't too stinky.

It was too funny, when we went to pick them up, we had to bring all the kids with us, so Jon and I were trying to find a way to pull it off without them knowing. Luckily it was dark, and we had just gotten back from seeing the Christmas lights in the city. I went and picked them up in a box, and we acted like we had to pick something up from a friend. But once we got them in, they started sqeaking and squealing like crazy. And we had to drive 30 minutes to get home! My hubby is hilarious- so fun to watch him try to keep the kids from finding out... each time they would squeak, he would pretend to sneeze, or sing, and crank up the Christmas music even louder. And they had no clue. Too fun!!

What a blessed Christmas. Hope yours was just as special!! Nothing like experiencing this beautiful season than through the eyes of a child. Childlike awe and wonder is so inspiring!

Ok, so I know it's past V-Day, but I'm still trying to play catch up! Had to get a few pics on here from halloween, so the kids will remember the fun we had.

We're all about themes for halloween. Jon and I like to participate- it makes our family feel unified- and it's just so dang fun! Love this tradition! But someday (SOON I think) the kids will probably start being embarrassed by their dorky parents, and won't be too thrilled with this tradition. They'll probably want to do their own thing soon, and that's ok. But they're loving it now! So I'm going to enjoy this as long as possible before that day comes.

We decided to go as Packers fans this year. Kind of lame, I know, haha. It was all I could put together though. I was newly pregnant at the time, sick and exhausted. So I almost bagged it completely this year. But I'm glad we made it happen. And it was pretty cheap, since there were tons of Brett Farve jerseys at Goodwill. ;) So here we are as Packers Fans... and one cute, cuddly, football.

Traditions

One of our favorite traditions is camping together. We love going during General Conference (a church conference that happens twice a year), so we can cuddle up in the camper, learn, and be together without the usual distractions. And somehow despite the cramped quarters, the kids get along better when camping than they do at home. (Maybe that's why I'm such a fan!)

So here are a couple Hudson camping traditions...

So if you want to try this with your kids, all you'll need is a couple liters of pop (diet is best so you don't get sticky!), a couple packs of mint mentos, and I highly recommend buying a geyser tube for maximum effect. Here's a cheap one on amazon.

Stay at Home Mom?

I admit, sometimes staying at home feels a bit less than glamorous. Especially those days when I don't make it to the shower after a workout, I have spit up stains on my shirt, no make-up, my hair in a bun, and on my knees scrubbling the spilled oatmeal on the floor. Or when caring for sick kids, leaves me exhausted and somehow a little puke ends up in my hair! It's true- motherhood is no easy task, and can leave us moms feeling a little frumpy at times! But the TRUTH is,

Motherhood is near to divinity. "It is the highest, holiest service to be assumed by mankind. It places her who honors its holy calling and service next to the angels." First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

So I've never liked the term "stay at home mom". That just sounds so... blah, don't you think?! No, we're NOT stay at home moms.

We're "DOMESTIC GODDESSES!"

I'm all for anything that helps us feel like the queens we are. So I have this thing for aprons. They're pretty and feminine, and I love the way they make me feel. They make me feel a little less stay at home mom-ish, and a little more domestic goddess-like. :) I have tons of them, mostly all from the same company. I love these and wanted to share them with you if you ever feel this way too...

Here are my little domestic goddesses in training. (If that's what they choose to do of course.) ;)

And here's one of my favorite recipes EVER I'd love to share with you. It's called Taco Lasagna. Don't remember where I got this recipe, but our family has enjoyed it for years!! It's easy, nutritious, and kid-friendly.

Taco Lasagna:

Ingredients:

1 pound ground beef
1/2 cup chopped green pepper
1/2 cup chopped onion
2/3 cup water
1 envelope taco seasoning
1 can (15 ounces) black beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (14-1/2 ounces) Mexican diced tomatoes, undrained
6 flour tortillas (8 inches)
1 can (16 ounces) refried beans
3 cups shredded Mexican cheese blend (I always go a little generous on cheese) mmm :)

Directions:

In a large skillet, cook the beef, green pepper and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Add water and taco seasoning; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 2 minutes. Stir in black beans and tomatoes. Simmer, uncovered, for 10 minutes.

Place two tortillas in a greased 13-in. x 9-in. baking dish. Spread with half of the refried beans and beef mixture; sprinkle with 1 cup cheese. Repeat layers. Top with remaining tortillas and cheese.
Cover and bake at 350° for 25-30 minutes or until heated through and cheese is melted.

Yep, I think it's true. The way to a man's heart is definitely through his stomach!

Well... HELLO there!!!

Wow, it's been SO long!!! Well, what can I say about this extended absence? Basically, it's been a brutal few months! I don't think I broke the news on this blog yet, but... I'm pregnant with #6! That means 6 KIDS AGES 8 AND UNDER. I know... crazy, huh?! I'm still trying to process that news myself! But we're so grateful and excited!! Couldn't be happier to welcome another little one into our lives.

So yes, to put it bluntly, I got knocked up... but this pregnancy has knocked me DOWN, big time! So much for my goal to be more consistent on this blog, haha! It's been humbling really. During the first trimester, I felt like I had seriously been hit by a truck most days with extreme fatigue, and morning sickness. It was all I could do to drag myself out of bed some days, let alone clothe, feed, teach, read to, play with, make dinner for, clean up after, the kids. So blogging has been put on the back burner for a while, along with cleaning the shower, and dusting the furniture, etc. But I'm feeling SO much better now that we're into the 2nd trimester. I really feel like myself again! So I'm relieved, and grateful for my patient and understanding hubby, who chipped in when he could, and never once told me to get off my plump prego butt and mop the floor.

So now that I'm back to blogging, I have some SERIOUS catching up to do! I can't wait to read all your posts!! Feels so good to be back!!

Spinach Lovers!

Here's a tip to get kids to eat veggies- even canned spinach, (bleh). At dinnertime from the time they're really young, instead of saying, "If you eat all your spaghetti, you can have some ice cream" (or whatever), you say... "If you eat all your spaghetti, you can have some... spinach!!" :D Works every time! A little reverse psychology there, he he. Hey, at least my degree was good for something!

Watermelon Frenzy!

Oh man, this little guy sure keeps me on my toes! Went upstairs for a minute, and came down to this. He was having the time of his life with this watermelon! He kept saying, "uh-oh" and just laughed and laughed. I couldn't help but laugh too. And then needless to say- it was bathtime!! He was such a sticky mess!

High on Health!

As you know, (and probably sick of hearing about) I have had amazing results with a nutritional cleanse product called Isagenix. Wait- don't stop reading if you're skeptical. I was too! A Declining State of Health

Recently, I was invited to speak at a symposium at Harvard University’s Medical School, where I discussed various topics related to the current state of health in the U.S. and the factors behind the recent rise in various lifestyle diseases. Specifically, the purpose of that presentation – and of this information – was to point out several different problems contributing to the poor state of health.

After spending approximately 10 years researching and investigating the questions pertaining to our declining health, I have pinpointed seven problem areas that can be addressed to allow each of us to restore our health and enjoy a revitalized sense of wellness.

The Seven Problems

(1) Poor Immune Function

Today, approximately 50 percent of people will contract some form of cancer in their lives. This number is a significant jump from just 50 years ago, when only 1 in 12 was at risk of developing the disease. Considering all of the money, research and focus we've dedicated to solving the cancer problem, you'd think the numbers should improve, not worsen. So what's the problem? Poor immune function!

Most people overlook the crucial role our immune system plays in warding off disease and maintaining our health. If someone we know is diagnosed with cancer, we often ascribe its onset to "bad luck" or being a product of "bad genes." While genetics certainly do play a part in the formation of disease, the research shows that living a healthy lifestyle drastically reduces one's risk. How? It typically improves the function of the immune system.

Every minute of every day, the body's immune components work non-stop to halt the formation of dysfunctional cells, infections by viruses or bacteria, or the exposure of chemical impurities. There are many things that contribute to a poorly functioning immune system (many of them outlined in the other"problems" listed in this brochure), but the fact remains that if you have an active, optimally-functioning immune system, your risk of becoming a statistic to modern diseases will be slashed considerably.

(2) Nutrient-Depleted Soils

Researchers at UCLA in 2007 began to investigate why certain women were showing high rates of anemia despite their regular consumption of spinach – normally a food high in iron. The researchers had obtained a sample of spinach from this particular area grown in 1953 and they compared it to a current sample. The results were alarming – it would take about 43 bowls of the modern spinach to equal one bowl of the spinach from 1953 to obtain the same iron content.

The fact is that modern farming methods have in many ways led to the depletion of our soils. For instance, the development and widespread use of pesticides and herbicides seems great at first glance – they easily kill unwanted pests and allow for more produce, right? While that is true to some degree, these chemicals also destroy the complex ecosystem of bacteria and other microorganisms that reside in the topsoil. This ecosystem aids in the conversion of inorganic material into organic material (such as minerals) that the plant can then take up and utilize. Of course, these are the nutrients that should normally be stored in the resulting fruits and vegetables. Today, sadly, their levels have dropped dramatically.

(3) Nutrient-Deficient Food

Not surprisingly, nutrient-depleted fruits, vegetables, grains and other foods are the prime reason our food supply is deficient in the nutrients we each need to function properly. Experts estimate that there are about 90 nutrients – including 60 minerals – that our bodies need to perform their various tasks.

On top of the nutrient-depleted soils, other factors have made our foods void of nutrition. One simply has to enter one of the thousands of grocery stores that dot our landscape to see that the majority of available foods are highly processed, are high in simple carbohydrates, sugars, unhealthy fats, synthetic chemicals and flavorings, and are low in natural ingredients (whole grains, nuts, real juice or sugars and so on).

The end result? A poorly functioning immune system, obesity and an increased risk of disease.

(4) Environmental Chemical Impurities

This one is particularly scary. Mounds of data demonstrate that our environment – the air we breathe, the water we drink, our soils, the inside of our homes and offices, and even the foods we eat – are filled with thousands of different chemicals. Hundreds of new ones are introduced every year, and their safety – not to mention the endless potential combination's of chemicals – are rarely tested.

Inside the body, synthetic chemicals can wreak havoc on our immune system (and virtually every other body system), create oxidative damage, encourage an inflammatory state, negatively affect our mental abilities, and much more.

(5) The Obesity Epidemic

This one is huge (no pun intended). Despite repeated warnings by experts and government agencies, our collective waistline continues to expand. Levels of overweight and obese individuals are at an all-time high, and the upward trend is linked directly with other lifestyle diseases. In fact, the surgeon general has declared obesity as the leading cause of preventable death – even ahead of tobacco use.

(6) Most Supplements Are Lacking

After reading the preceding material, you may be asking why nutritional supplements can’t be a part of the solution. They can be. The problem is that most supplement lines – even those that are high-quality and that contain the necessary 90 nutrients our bodies need – often are lacking in a few key areas.

First, they aren’t organic. By that, I mean that the ingredients aren’t extracted from plant sources, which means they probably are not water soluble and therefore much less available to the body. Mint Brownies

Made a yummy treat for Book Club tonight and thought I'd share with you:

Mint Brownies!

2/3 cup butter
3 squares unsweetened baking chocolate
2 cups brown sugar
3 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/4 cup flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt

Melt butter and chocolate in microwave. Remove from heat and stir in wet ingredients. Mix together dry ingredients and add to mixture. Bake 350 for 25-30 min. in greased 13X9 pan. Cool completely.

Mint Frosting:

2 cups powdered sugar

1/4 cup butter

2 Tbsp milk

1/2 tsp. peppermine extract

green food coloring

Cream together until smooth. Spread evenly over cooled brownies.

Glaze:

2 squares unsweetened baking chocolate

2 tbsp. butter

Melt in microwave. Drizzle over brownies.

Gotta make it fun and pretty!

Add mini chocolate chips- and wallah! Best with vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!!!

The kids were happy to have the leftovers. I don't bake much anymore now that I'm not addicted to this stuff- but I still do this once in a while! No complaints around here. :)

Europe (finally!)

I'm usually not one to focus on the negative. I think there is great power in positive thinking and looking for the good. But I just have to point out something-

We all couldn't help but notice how many things went wrong on this trip. It was almost comical- it was seriously one thing after the next!! At the time it wasn't exactly laughable though.

So here are just a FEW of the things that went wrong on this trip:

My passport disaster
Crazy layovers – some 6, 7, 10, 12 hours long
3 girls were lost in Europe after 2nd leg of trip – and no one knew where they were for a few days.
12 people lost luggage – and many didn't get it returned for a few days.
Flu outbreak
No restaurants or places to eat at Sophia hotel
Rehearsal schedule changes without being notified
Separate Cold/cough outbreak
No toilet paper/soap or SEATS
Multiple attempts of theft/pick pockets
Many thefts- including a stolen bag, IPhone, camera, and wallet
Due to time constraints the Maestro cut most of the 2nd Act at the last minute
My friend Chelsea had pinched nerve in her arm- caused her severe pain – she went to 3 different hospitals – no one spoke English
Starting time mix-up for 1st Magic Flute – first scheduled at 7:00 – then 7:30 – but actually 8:00 and only supposed to go until 9:00!!
After everyone spent months memorizing spoken lines, they cut over half of them
Broadway stage unsafe – huge cavern (originally pit) under flimsy wooden floor – we were supposed to have 40 people jumping up and down on it! Had to restage
No A/C for Broadway actors – they were all sweating horribly
Nails/staples on stage – there were at least 100 nails on the stage
No time (or place) for Master Classes
Changed venues/itinerary/times without telling us
Forced to rehearse in courtyard (90 degrees) because rooms inadequate/small with no A/C
Inadequate rehearsal facilities- in a TINY room (dressing/practice room) with piano and 40 people in 90 degrees
The worst thing- Conductor demanded to switch Tamino and Sarastro in intermission at 2nd performance!!
Staff refused to stop smoking in Opera House
No blackouts/curtains for performance as rehearsed
No rehearsal with orchestra/conductor for final cast at Opera House
Papageno swallowed bug during Opera performance – lodged in throat – couldn’t sing for few measures
Mom had to step in and sight read for Chealsea during the 1st performance of Magic Flute

And that wasn't even half of it!

But um, other than that, the trip was awesome! We all survived! And grew closer to each other through it all. We even thought of making t-shirts for everyone that said, "I survived Varna International - and still had a blast!" Seriously- if we could do this and still put on a great show- we can do anything.

I missed my family so much though. The kids were so sweet. They threw a big party for me when I got home! They even decorated the living room...

And there were lots of hugs and loves when I got back and I couldn't get enough. There's no place like home.

Baptism Day!

Isn't this the sweetest picture? I just love this one so much. This was Celeste on her baby blessing day. She was so innocent then.

Well, our little Celeste was baptized this Saturday, and now she's perfectly innocent once again. If you're wondering- this is what we believe about baptism. What a journey she has ahead of her. My mom gave a talk on the Holy Spirit, our family sang a quartet, and Celeste even she sang a solo called "My Heavenly Father Loves Me." We videotaped it at home- so I'll upload that on here soon. It was sweet. So are some pics of her special day:

Notice Daddy's tie- it has pictures of Celeste as a baby all over it. It was fitting for the occasion. :)

We took about 10 picture attempts of the whole family, but NONE of them worked out. Believe it or not, THIS is the best one we got, haha!

After the baptism, all the people who were in attendance wrote little notes for her to save in her scrapbook as a keepsake. We were grateful to all the people who came to support her.

Celeste, we're so proud of you for making this important step in your life. You've chosen to take upon yourself the name of Christ and try to be like Him. His love truly shines through your bright eyes and sweet smile!

This was Jon's favorite book as a child. His mom used to read it to him over and over, and it became really special to him. So just recently, I walked in and he was reading it to our own children! He ordered it so he could share it with them. It was a sweet moment so I had to capture it.

Can't believe our sweet Celeste turned 8 last week!! She's always had such a great smile and endearing personality...

This contagious smile has brightened our lives from the time she was a baby! Wherever we went, people would say, "That is the HAPPIEST baby I have ever seen!!"

And then she turned 2, and developed a bit of a 'tude... ;)

She definitely has some serious spunk! She's a strong person and she can assert herself with the best of them. And so smart!

And for as young as she is, she has gotten around a lot! She was born in Texas...

Travelled across country in a motorhome- twice! And visited 34 states!

(And thoroughly enjoyed it!)

And she's lived in 3 different states already. We can't wait to see where life will take her next!!

She had a friend pool party last week, and had a blast. Twelve giggly girls makes for one fun (and noisy) birthday bash!

Happy Birthday to our beautiful Celeste! You have such a bright future ahead!

FHE Lesson- Baptism

We try to hold a family home evening every monday night- it's a night designated in our church for families to draw closer together.  I've decided to start sharing fhe ideas on this blog- feel free to steal any ideas you like! Some are my own, others are borrowed from church magazines and church Family Home Evening manuals.

Family Home Evening usually consists of a prayer, song, lesson, activity, and a treat- (saved for the end- a great way to bribe kids to cooperate!) Unfortunately, many of these nights don't always go as planned- and turn out something like this!

But every once in a while we get it right. And this was one of those special nights. Celeste is turning 8 this week, so she'll be baptized soon!  In our church we believe children are born innocent and have no need for baptism until the age of accountability. So for FHE, we wanted to make sure she felt prepared and ready for this important step in her life. We wanted to make sure she understood the covenants she would be making with the Lord. We started out with a song: "When I am Baptized" and a prayer.  It's so important to emphasize the need to pray for the spirit to be with us. With all these young crazy kids, we need all the help we can get!

Then Celeste read a couple scriptures about baptism. We always try to incorporate scriptures in family home evening.  The word of God will touch the hearts of our children more than anything else. Then we watched this beautiful video on baptism that helped the kids quiet down and bring a spirit of reverence. Music is also a powerful tool to teach and testify spiritual truth.

For the lesson, I held up 2 pennies, one shiny and new, and one dirty and tarnished. Each kid got a tarnished penny and I explained that although we come to this life clean and pure, we make mistakes along the way.  But through the blessing of baptism, we can be washed clean of our sins through the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
Then they each dropped their pennies in this solution- 1/4 cup vinegar, 1 teaspoon salt, and the tarnish disappeared. The pennies were shiny and new again. Love object lessons!  It captures kids' attention and helps them understand and remember important principles.
(Oh- one tip- don't spill vinegar on carpet.)

Then Celeste had a chance to answer some possible interview questions about baptism, and then she got to practice what it will be like to be baptized. Daddy didn't say the actual sacred prayer of course, but they just went through the motions:

And lastly, for a special baptism tradtion- when the kids turn 8, they get to choose a temple from our temple book- and it gets framed and put up in their rooms. Celeste chose the St. Louis Missouri Temple.

And for refreshments, we had pudding- Celeste's choice in honor of her special day coming up.

Not So Soccer Mom

It seems there has been a lot of talk in recent years about how families are overscheduled- constantly on the run and involved in too many activities. We've made this mistake.

Looks a little like this- Jon gets home from work, we give each other a quick peck- or not- sometimes I'm annoyed that he's late and didn't call, lol. So things are slightly contentious anyway, and since we're late- I'm barking at the kids to hurry and get their stuff and we all scramble out the door and head off in different directions. Jon takes a couple kids to one activity, and I take the other kids to another, and we both pick up nutritionally void fast food- a sorry excuse for dinner on the way home. We finally get home past the kids bedtimes and say a quick family prayer and rush to get everyone in bed- and get up to do it all again. So that might be an extreme example, but it has happened.

But now I refuse to live that way! I'm all about giving my kids opportunities to grow and develop, but it will not come at the expense of our family happiness. I understand the pressure parents feel to keep up- to continually keep kids busy with worthy pursuits. But it comes at a cost. The rushed madness can take away from the peace and stability of home and family life. So I guess that means I'm not a cool soccer mom. But that's ok with me. :) The way I see it, I have one shot to be a parent of young kids- to teach them truth, and instill values in them, and I'm not going to let social pressures or too many extracurricular activities take away those special moments.

I heard once that it's easy to say "NO" to unnessesary activities and other people's expectations, when you have a burning "YES" inside for something more important. And to me, that burning YES is for time together. Alvin Rosenfeld, the author of The Over-Scheduled Child: Avoiding the Hyper-Parenting Trap: said ''Parents rush so much to pay attention to activities that they neglect the relationships. And all the data shows the relationships (with parents and friends) make the difference.'' I like how President Hinckley’s put it in his book “Standing for Something.” even more. He said, Our lives have become intensely fast paced filled with business and a frantic flitting about that was uncharacteristic of earlier ages. We pack our lives with so many activities and pursuits that many of us have lost sight of something that is of critical importance to families… time together.

I'm also a huge advocate of letting kids be kids! Allowing them space and freedom to enjoy their childhood- letting them run, play, explore, and imagine. When they're overscheduled, there's little free time for kids to be kids.

I think it's especially important in the formative years to provide that structure kids need. Family dinner, reading together, bedtime routines, and Sunday worship are important family rituals that provide a wonderful sense of security. As our kids get older, we may be a little more flexible- and keep them busier... so they'll stay out of trouble. But for now, we're really kind of possessive of our time together. :)

In an effort to prevent an overscheduled family life, our current policy is to allow each child 1 activity of their choice a year (besides church activities)- starting in kindergarten. So this year it's t-ball for Benji, piano for Celeste, and ballet for Charity. We do our best to have dinner together first, and then go together to practices and games as a family to show our support for one another. As they get older, they might not want all of us on the sidelines cheering them on, lol, but for now it really seems to mean a lot to them.

Of course, the kids are thrilled to go along to show their support. Or maybe it's cause we stop for ice cream on the way home. Yeah, so getting ice cream after each game might not be the healthiest habit- but at least we're together!

The truth about LOVE

I believe the most important thing parents can do for their children is to love each other and maintain a stable and happy relationship. A strong marriage provides security for children and a model for their own future marriages. To be totally honest, we've had rough times in our marriage- I won't lie. We can both be very ~~stubborn~~ strong-willed. We're continually learning how to better communicate to keep our marriage strong and happy. It takes serious work. But these little ones are worth every effort.

Someone once told Stephen Covey he had fallen out of love with his wife. He said, "The feeling we once had just isn't there anymore- our love is dead. I think our marriage may be over. But you know, we have 3 kids... what do you think we should we do?"

Covey responded, "Love her."

The guy said, "But I just told you, the feeling just isn't there anymore. So now what do you suggest?"

Covey repeated, "LOVE her. Love is a verb. Love the feeling is a fruit of love the verb. Start thinking selflessly- give of yourself, sacrifice for her. Show love."

I think this is such a powerful truth! I know of so many marriages that have been rebuilt by couples choosing to love. Forgiving is a verb. Patience is a verb. We can choose our own response. We can choose to love first- instead of waiting for the other to be loving. We can choose to look for the good in each other. I have not always been good at looking for the good. Jon and I even have a nickname for my feisty side- Nicolette. Lol. But we're both learning that when we wake up each morning and think to ourselves, "What can I do to make my husband's/wife's life easier? What can I do to show him/her love?" It is a much happier way to live than being critical and negative.

Now I should add- I'm not naive enough to think that this is always the solution to every problem or that every marriage can or should survive. I worked as an advocate for domestic violence and sexual assault victims, so I'm well aware that there are situations where marriages have serious problems, and just love and patience will not always solve those problems. There are legitimate reasons for divorce.

But I believe many marriages can be saved if we would choose to be selfless. Love within marriage can be recreated through service, sacrifice, and devotion. We can never go wrong by choosing to love generously, even when we don't feel like it. Charity never faileth. That's the truth.
