Here's what bothers me about a continuous universe, transfinite numbers.

A countable numbers has the quality that it can be completely specified with a finite amount of information in a finite period of time. Uncountable numbers don't have this quality. So pi is a part of a countable set (Computable numbers) because a finite computer program can enumerate its infinite digits, and in enumerating all such finite computer programs, we come to pi. ANY number with a finite definition is countable, by enumerating all such definitions. Yet transfinite number theory states that the vast amount of real numbers, even on a finite interval, are uncountable, which is to say that they have infinite decimal places which are so random that they cannot be expressed (or compressed) into any finite expression, unlike numbers like pi and e which have finite definitions. So in other words it takes an infinite amount of information to precisely specify a given point on a real interval in the majority of cases.

So in using this to describe the universe, you have that classical "God doesn't play dice" view where an omniscient viewer (God) could tell you a particles position on its path at any moment of time. However even if an itsy bitsy particle where moving over an itsy bitsy interval, it would probably (2^aleph vs aleph) take an infinite amount of information to tell you where exactly where it is. Furthermore, in addition to having to know an INFINITE amount of information about a single particle at a moment in time, "God" would also have to know an infinite amount of information infinitely many times a second, just for one particle. What a pain in the ass for God!

I can't say for sure that this is not the case, but something about that deeply hints to me that the universe is discrete, call it a gut feeling.

how many people are asleep at any given moment?

people generally go to sleep when it is dark and wake up when it is light.
at any given moment the sun is setting on the surface of the earth.
now, you could actually set up a large differential equation, using population densities at various points on the globe if you wanted to get really accurate...
...but assume that the population of the earth is spread out evenly over the surface.
also assume that it is the spring or fall equinox, so that the light from the sun is equally distributed between the northern and souther hemisphere. that would mean that the days are 12 hours long planet wide. let's say everyone generally goes to sleep a few hours after sunset, say at around 10pm, and wake up at 6am. at any given moment, it is "10pm" at some place on the planet and "6am" at some other place, so an equal amount of people are falling asleep and waking up at the same time. it is only between the hours of 10pm and 6am over 1/3rd of the surface of the earth at any given moment. so, the average number of people asleep at any given moment is the population of the planet multiplied by the ratio of the average of number of hours people get to the number of hours in a day. you could get a much better idea of how many people were asleep on Jan. 26th at 0700GMT by taking into consideration such things as population densities and sunset times on the globe, however this simple algebraic calculation would give you a yearly average, as the densities and changes in season are smoothed out and rendered irrelevant as the earth spun and traveled in orbit over the course of a year.

I am curious about this as well, I will often have the sensation of "falling" as I am falling asleep and my body suddenly shudders or spasms and I try to "catch" the fall. Mine are very small shudders though. My boyfriend's entire body spasms almost every single time he falls asleep and it makes me wonder if it is neurological in nature. I am a nursing student but have never come across a definitive answer because everyone's experience of this sensation is different.

I have an idea for a very simple experiment. Not sure if it has been done. If everything universe is discrete then there must be also a smallest possible angle.

Experiment: direct a beam of light and rotate it very slowly. Far away measure if light moves in steps. If so and it's impossible to direct light between these steps by adjusting the light emitter angle then this could prove that at least a part of universe is discrete if not all, and maybe even the universe "cell" size could be determined.

BTW, if universe would not be discrete then theoretically any amount of information could be stored between just 2 points (their distance).

Anyway, surely the fact that quantum wave-functions destructively interfere going backwards in time, is only something that causes, somehow, the normal flow of time and does not prevent things like wormholes? The interferance would surely only be local.

Has anyone ever heard of Many Worlds theory? (I.e. all possible solutions of the wavefunction exist, but in different universes- we only consciously experience one of them).

I'm just extremely releived to hear it's a hoax. My son brought it to my attention and as I read it I said, a joke-no wait-a joke-well maybe! The reason being that I've seen bits of creationist "fact" that were every bit as ludicrous as anything in this ( i.e. a land bridge that for some reason ONLY MARSUPIAL mammals used to reach Australia after the great flood) .
