In 1988/89 I made an inventory of my books (2000) with a Windows 2 programme. It could only digest 1000. So I had to separate it into 2 sets.
Later on, in 1994/5 I developed with Paradox a more sophisticated approach. Search on author, title, epoch, year, country, language, subject etc became possible. Citations could be inserted in articles and references simplified. I am still very proud of my development skills, but the 4000 books and documents I have to record at this point of time cannot find their place in my primitive Paradox records.
That is why I am looking for advice. I tried programmes designed for videoshops. No way.
I assume that libraries all over the world have good programmes to make their books etc. accessible. Are they 'on the market'?
Please, tell me about predesigned programmes for categorizing books and documents.
You will help me so much!

    Donna Leon, living and writing since 25 years in Venice, Italy, is one of them. Her Venice crime series is famous. You not only feel soon at home with the Brunetti family, but you'll miss them every time you finish another Donna Leon.

    There is one condition for your pleasure and satisfaction: You'll have to agree with (or be sympathetic to) Leon's comments on Italian and European mores, that are often sharp and liberal-leaning.

    I read her autobiographical essays called "Sans Brunetti" in French.  A first edition in Italian is being offered on Amazon.com. An edition of the English (American) written original text at Amazon.com has been added in spring 2008.

6/2: Vandaag verder gelezen in: Jeffrey Eugenides: Middlesex. Het gaat eigenlijk weinig over sex. 't Is een heel goed geschreven historische familieroman. Prima research, ongelooflijk beeldende details. Maar ik weet nog niet wat de tragische geslachtsvergissing met de hele uitkomst te maken heeft. Aanbevolen als kijk op de twintigste-eeuwe geschiedenis!
 
16/2: Maar, wat kan die man (eerst: vrouw) uitweiden! Bij mij roept hij herinneringen op aan de sfeer van de jaren '40 tot en met '70. Het midden van de 20ste eeuw zal misschien ooit bekend staan als "The Breaking of Families".
 
Verward in de nieuwe tijd, konden langdurige (steeds langduriger) huwelijken het niet houden. James-Stewart illusies over een volkomen nieuw leven voor jongeren, mits na breuk met clan, deden de rest. Individualisme leek op zijn hoogtepunt, maar eigenlijk was het een groot conformisme.
 
Door zijn speciale geschiedenis van identiteitsverwisseling, ontsnapt Eugenides (wat een naam voor een pseudo-hermafrodiet!) daaraan.  En toch blijken liefde en zorg voor elkaar, met zijn nieuwe Japanse vriendin, een oplossing te bieden.
 
Een oplossing die niets anders is dan de terugkeer naar familiaal leven.
