Intute have a number of tutorials aimed at guiding students through the best of the internet for their particular subject. The tutorials are interactive and aim to develop internet research skills. Tutorials available are:

Run at the University of the West of England, this MasterClass is a professional development opportunity aimed at all those who wish to develop their skills in communicating science.

Registrations are open for the 2010 MasterClass, to be held in Bristol from Feb 22 – 26.
Topics include:
* The historical and social contexts of science communication
* Relationships between science and the public
* Face-to-face, media and online methods of engaging with the public
* Advice on finding funding for science communication activities

Some of these titles are copies of Recommended Reading books from lists sent to the Library by academic staff.

RSS – or Really Simple Syndication – is a marvellous way to stay up to date with all your favourite websites
If any of your favourite websites publish an RSS feed, you don’t have to keep visiting it to find fresh content – you can just subscribe to the RSS feed and wait for that fresh content to come to you. Look out for these handy symbols, they let you know that RSS is available on the website you are viewing.

The College has prepared a series of guides to help students at undergraduate, Master’s and research level of study. In these guides you will find advice, lessons and tips to help you to enhance your learning skills and get the very best from your degree. The guides explain what to expect from research and study at Imperial, and provide sources of support and guidance.

Come and learn how to find information for your projects at the library’s introductory database sessions. These sessions are primarily aimed at undergraduates. Humanities students may find the sessions on CSA, Web of Knowledge, using the internet and reading and note taking useful:  

All subjects using CSA (Cambridge Scientific Abstracts) .CSA covers major areas of research, including environmental sciences, materials science, biological sciences, engineering and computer science.

All subjects using Web of Science. This multidisciplinary database covers a wide range of subjects including science, engineering, humanities, medicine and social sciences. It also includes cited references for all articles.

Intelligent use of the Internet – learn which sources on the Internet to trust. We all use the internet but we don’t always know how reliable it is. This session will show you how to decide whether the information you find on the internet is valuable research or just plain rubbish!

Cross-search multiple databases using Metalib, the library’s portal This information portal provides access to databases and electronic journals subscribed to by the Library. Many of the resources can be cross-searched, where a single search is carried out on more than one database.

RefWorks – learn how to store your references and create a reference list

Reading & Note Taking – learn techniques for improving your reading and note taking skills All sessions are in Training room 1 on Level 1 of the Central Library.
