24 hour opening during Summer vacation 2012 at Central Library

For the first time the Central Library will continue to open 24 hours a day throughout the summer vacataion.

There are a few times when we will need to close, some of these have already been planned so click here for more details.

The Library’s lunchtime training sessions for the Summer term have arrived! The sessions are primarily aimed at undergraduates but taught postgraduates may also find them useful. The sessions are delivered in the Central Library, South Kensington campus.

Humanities students may find the following sessions useful:

Google Scholar: Google Scholar is a service which uses the Google search engine, but searches only scholarly resources. This session will cover search tips, what Google Scholar can do for you, and the advantages and disadvantages of using Google Scholar. Thursday 21 June 2012 12.00 – 13.00

PubMed: This is the most comprehensive source for biomedical articles. This session is for students who need to find information in medicine and related subjects. Friday 1 June 2012 12.00 -13.00

Scifinder Scholar: SciFinder Scholar is a key chemistry resource and also covers biochemistry, biology, pharmacology, medicine, and related disciplines. Monday 11 June 2012 12.00 -13.00

Web of Science: This multidisciplinary database covers a wide range of subjects including science, engineering, humanities, medicine and social sciences. It also includes cited references for all articles. Tuesday 29 May 2012 12.00 – 13.00

Academic Writing: Learn techniques for improving your academic writing skills. You will learn how to understand essay questions, look at different academic writing formats and gain some tips to help in those all important exams. ThuWednesday 6 June 2012 12.00 – 13.00

Intelligent use of the Internet: Learn which sources on the Internet to trust. We all use the internet but we don’t always know how reliable it is. This session will show you how to decide whether the information you find on the internet is valuable research or just plain rubbish! Wednesday 20 June 2012 12.00 – 13.00

Presentation Skills: Get general advice and tips on preparing a presentation, including how to plan a presentation, and what to do when you are a presenter. Tuesday 19 June 2012 12.00 – 13.00

Reading & Note Taking: Learn techniques for improving your reading and note taking skills. Tuesday 12 June 2012 12.00 – 13.00

All sessions are in Training room 1 or 2 on Level 1 of the Central Library unless otherwise stated when you book via the Library website.

Daily newspapers now on Level 4 of Central Library

From Monday 14 May the daily newspapers delivered to the Central Library at South Kensington will be displayed on level 4 in the journals collection.

The current copy of the following titles is available:

Daily Telegraph
Guardian
Independent
Times

along with the Financial Times for which we keep a back run of the last year only, available on Stack 16. For electronic access to the FT please use Library Search fron the Library homepage.

New books at the Central Library in April-May 2012

There is a list of Humanities books, which have been purchased to support courses, and an additional list of recreational materials which includes fiction, general non-fiction, films on DVD and music CDs.

Fair access to study spaces

The summer term is one of the busiest times in the Central Library and study spaces are at a premium, so please don’t use personal belongings to reserve desks or PCs.

To help equitable access to desk space, our library attendants will clear unattended items to storage areas on each floor.

Level 1 next to printer-copiers
Level 2 next to printer-copiers
Level 4 next to printer-copiers
Level 5 next to drinks fountain

Remember to take all possessions with you when you leave the library.

Left items may be disposed of under the terms of our lost property guidelines.

Translatio: International Federation of Translators Newsletter

Imperial open access publication fund

The Imperial open access publication fund is being launched this month to support researchers who would like to publish their research in open access publications. The fund is open to academic and postdoctoral staff employed at Imperial College London and will pay for open access publication costs for journal articles in open access journals or subscription journals that offer an open access option (hybrid journals).

BFI National Library move planned for Summer 2012

The BFI National Library is planning to move from its current location in Stephen Street to a purpose-built space at the BFI Southbank this May-June. Additional plans once the move is completed include a Saturday service and longer weekday opening hours – both of which will be welcome news to regular visitors.
