A 24-hour news cycle and thousands of global television and radio networks, coupled with an immense array of online resources, have challenged our long-held perceptions of information management. Rather than merely possessing data, we must also learn the skills necessary to acquire, collate, and evaluate information for any situation. This new type of literacy also requires competency with communication
technologies, including computers and mobile devices that can help in our day-to-day decisionmaking. National Information Literacy Awareness Month highlights the need for all Americans to be adept in the skills necessary to effectively navigate the Information Age.

Though we may know how to find the information we need, we must also know how to evaluate it. Over the past decade, we have seen a crisis of authenticity emerge. We now live in a world where anyone can publish an opinion or perspective, whether true or not, and have that opinion amplified within the information marketplace. At the same time, Americans have unprecedented access to the diverse and independent sources of information, as well as institutions such as libraries and universities, that can help separate truth from fiction and signal from noise.

Our Nation's educators and institutions of learning must be aware of -- and adjust to -- these new realities. In addition to the basic skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic, it is equally important that our students are given the tools required to take advantage of the information available to them. The ability to seek, find, and decipher information can be applied to countless life decisions, whether financial, medical, educational, or technical.

This month, we dedicate ourselves to increasing information literacy awareness so that all citizens understand its vital importance. An informed and educated citizenry is essential to the functioning of our modern democratic society, and I encourage educational and community institutions across the country to help Americans find and evaluate the information they seek, in all its forms.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim October 2009 as National Information Literacy Awareness Month. I call upon the people of the United States to recognize the important role information plays in our daily lives, and appreciate the need for a greater understanding of its impact.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this first day of October, in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-fourth.

BARACK OBAMA
# # #

TED Prize launch: the incredible El Sistema music program is coming to the US!

El Sistema is a "visionary global movement that transforms the lives of children through music. These verifications are also known as CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Turing Test To Tell Computers and Humans Apart).

A Carnegie Mellon University scientist, Luis von Ahn, calculated that people waste close to 500,000 hours every day typing these characters. Luis von Ahn consequently developed reCAPTCHA which connects all of this immense brain power to help digitize old books and he and his colleagues reported in Science that “over the last year Web users have transcribed enough text to fill up more than 17,600 books, with better than 99 percent accuracy.”

To read/listen to the story visit http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=93605988.

To learn more about reCAPTCHA visit http://www.captcha.net/.

Introduction to Music Course - featuring the Florida Orchestra

Coming Fall 2008! High quality digital images—large sized JPEG files—can be projected either in the ARTstor online environment or in a variety of offline environments such as OIV, PowerPoint and Keynote. Users can download a full image at 1024 pixels on the long side or pan and zoom to needed details and download the saved detail at 1024 as well.

ARTstor users can also use the Offline Image Viewer (OIV) presentation tool to create digital slide show presentations. OIV enables side-by-side comparisons, zooming and panning on-the-fly, and the ability to customize text on each presentation slide. Users can download images at up to 3200 pixels for offline presentations by using OIV.

Integrating ARTstor with Courseware

Instructors can share ARTstor content with students through campus courseware systems, such as BlackBoard, WebCT, Sakai, or Moodle. You can upload images, provide URLs to link students to individual images or entire image groups, or share OIV presentation files. Our courseware guide explains how ARTstor content can be shared through courseware systems.
Learn more

Export image citations to citation management software

Citation management software is used to manage citations and create bibliographies. You can create image lists in ARTstor and export the image citations directly to RefWorks, EndNote, ProCite, or Reference Manager. You may also share lists of ARTstor images with others by printing, emailing, or downloading the citation list.
Learn more

Interactive features of ARTstor

ARTstor contains many interactive features that allow instructors and students to communicate within the ARTstor environment. Instructors may share image groups with students by creating password-protected (shared) folders. Students can unlock an instructor's shared folder to view the instructor's image groups, analyze images and metadata, study, and annotate images.

Instructors can also create student work folders associated with instructor shared folders. Student work folders give students a place to create image groups, add comments to images, and share this work with the instructor. Learn more

Oxford Art and Music Online have been redesigned.

The Oxford Art and Music Online databases have been redesigned. Guided tours can be found at:

Oxford Music Online
Oxford Art Online

Celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month at the Library!

Jazz Listening Session: 11:30am - 12:30pm
Jeff Donovick, piano; Don Davis, harmonica: 12:30-1:00pm
SPC Big Band: 1:15-2:00pm

'Cosmic Quandaries' at the Palladium Theatre this Wednesday!

Join Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson - world renowned astrophysicist, bestselling author, and host of the groundbreaking PBS series NOVA scienceNOW for a journey across the universe as he reveals its cosmic wonders, curiosities and uncertainties in front of a live audience at The Palladium Theatre in St. Petersburg.

WEDU welcomes Dr. deGrasse Tyson, Nova scienceNOW senior executive producer, Paula S.
