Choosing a Cigar Cabinet Humidor

Let’s say you’re beyond being a “newbie” cigar aficionado. You’ve tried many a cigar, have developed your own palate preferences and your now ready to start collecting mass volumes of cigars for aging and good times! You probably have a desktop cigar humidor (or two, or three) by now and need more space for your current collection and even more for those that you want to purchase.

Enter the cigar cabinet humidor. These types of cigar humidors are mid level humidors between the smaller desktop cigar humidors and their bigger brother, the large commercial style towers. The later generally are overkill for the personal or home collector. There are many different styles, some look like mini cigar towers, some have lots of glass, some none. Some have electrical outlets built in to them and some don’t. Some of the newer ones are totally electric and all you have to do is flip the switch. So which one to look for?

Depends on your tastes, your mate’s tastes and preferences, your wallet and what you want that cigar cabinet humidor to do.
Some cigar cabinet humidors are made to blend in with the current furniture scheme in your home. These are typically called end table cigar humidors, which look just like an end table you might find at the local furniture store. But inside these are lined in kiln-dried Spanish cedar, generally with movable or removable cedar shelves, outlet for your electronic humidifier and some come with a drawer that is slotted and lined with Spanish cedar. This allows for the humidity from your humidifier to humidify the drawer section as well as the bottom compartment. If you’re married, these generally will have the highest acceptance rate from your spouse as it doesn’t look like a cigar humidor, it looks just like a piece of furniture.

If you’re looking for a cigar cabinet humidor to store cigars for long term aging, then you will want to consider one without any glass, as ones with glass tend to be prone to colder winter conditions, knocking down the humidity levels somewhat. This can be countered with a little more work in the winter time. For more consistent internal humidity readings, non-glass versions are best.

Want to show off your cigar collection a little? Then one with a glass door makes for an impressive display in any room in your home or office. Again, a little more work may be required during the winter months, but for many, that’s an acceptable trade off.

Want to show off a lot? Take a look at the new line of Electronic Cigar Cabinet Humidors. These generally have a glass front door, but with a commercial grade self-sealing door, creating a secure seal to protect your cigars. These have an interior light to display your cigars, digital control dials that control both the interior humidity and interior temperature and a built in humidification device. Pretty much have to flip and switch and add your cigars. Makes for a very impressive display.

As you can see, there are quite a few variables in choosing a cigar cabinet humidor. Hopefully this guide will help you with your decision!

Cold Weather Got Your Humidor Down?

Winter time is cold time. Cold time is tough time on cigar humidors!

During winter, cold air knocks down the internal humidity reading of cigar humidors. Some, glass tops come to mind, more than others. So what to do? You just need to work a little harder to maintain proper humidity levels inside your humidor.

If you have a humidor with a passive humidity device, usually the humidifiers that come standard with the humidors, you will have to refill those more often and you can help out the passive device with a couple of other products. One being the Boveda Humidity Packs, they come in various Relative Humidity (RH) settings and you just toss them into your humidor for a additional boost of humidity. Be sure to consult the chart to determine how many you will need for your size humidor. Another solution would be the Cigar Caddy Crystal Gels Just open the top and place in your humidor for a additional boost of humidity. When the gels shrink by half, add some distilled water to re-generate them and watch them grow! When the weather warms up and your humidity readings begin to normalize, you can take out these wintertime helpers.

If you have a electronic humidification device, such as the Hydra or Hydra Commercial Grade Humidification systems, you should be turning the setting up. You may need to increase the setting from the factory set 70RH to 75RH or so to get proper humidification levels. Play around with the settings until you get the internal readings you need for your cigars.
