Mehr als ein Jahr ist seit dem letzten Eintrag hier vergangen, und aus der angekündigten »Zeitreise« durch 10 Jahre persönlichenr Internethistorie ist leider (vorerst) nichts geworden.

Kürzlich habe ich entdeckt, dass von meiner »Blogging Class« — meinem Seminar im Sommersemester 2006 — zumindest noch eine früheren Studentin eine fleißige Bloggerin geworden ist. Und das sollte eigentlich Motivation und Inspiration genug sein, mich meinem Blog wieder aktiv zuzuwenden. Vielleicht ein guter Vorsatz für's neue Jahr?

Update: Gerade sehe ich, dass auch bei Herrn Moosemann offenbar noch einiges passiert. Schön.

Gerade fällt mir ein, dass ich im August 1996 — also vor genau 10 Jahren — mit meiner ersten selbstgebastelten Website »so richtig« online ging, also über den Status einer Baustelle hinaus und mit halbwegs ordentlicher URL.

Eigentlich wäre dies ein guter Anlass, mal in die Tiefen meiner Festplatten und Datenträger zu schauen, um einige Zeugnisse des eigenen digitalen Werkelns auszukramen und zu kommentieren, also so eine Art perönliche Zeitreise durch die letzten 10 Jahre des Internets zu initiieren. Demnächst mehr hier auf diesem Blog.

Vor einigen Wochen angekündigt, und nun gerade noch so im Juli geschafft. Die neue ZUSAS-Website ist online. D.h., so komplett neu ist das alles nun auch wieder nicht, lediglich das neue Logo wurde integriert, das Farbschema etwas aufgefrischt, Texte aktualisiert und Grafiken ausgetauscht. Insgesamt war also doch einiges zu tun, auch wennn es hinterher kaum auffällt.

Endlich wurde auch eine Suchfunktion integriert, um die Inhalte der ZUSAS-Seiten besser durchstöbern zu können. Die Suche funktioniert auf Basis der Atrise Everyfind Software. Diese ist zwar nicht ganz so toll wie Google, ansonsten aber durchaus effizient und einfach, vor allem dann, wenn man mal keine Datenbank und CMS zur Verfügung hat und das Projekt eher überschaubar ist.

Es tut sich was am Zentrum für USA-Studien (ZUSAS). Mit Prof. Dr. Hans-Jürgen Grabbe hat das ZUSAS nun wieder einen Direktor, und etliche Veränderungen stehen für die kommenden Wochen und Monate ins Haus, und zwar durchaus zum Positiven. Damit einhergehend gibt es auch ein paar Änderungen im optischen Erscheinungsbild des ZUSAS. Den Anfang macht ein neues Logo, die neue Website folgt in Kürze.

Das nächste große Ereignis am ZUSAS wird die Wittenberg Summer School sein, die am 31. Juli 2006 beginnt. Hierfür — ganz frisch aus meinem Computer — das Poster:

For those who have seen the documentary Startup.com, some background information on the two protagonists, their former company GovWorks.com, and what they are doing nowadays can be found on their old Public Data Systems Web site written by Tom Herman in a rather personal style. The other hero, Kaleil Tuzman, obviously tried to sell his »success story.«

The two work togther on a new project now, and the idea behind their latest venture, JumpTV, at least sounds highly interesting again.

Kaum besser als das ZDF ist die FIFA™^®© mit Ihrem Kartenmaterial zur WM™^®© (Landkarten, nicht Tickets). Auf deren offiziellen Website jedenfalls sind die deutschen Spielorte recht, nun ja, großzügig eingezeichnet. Da hierfür vermutlich Hauptsponsor Yahoo verantwortlich ist, war offenbar ~~eine unterbezahlte Hilfskraft~~ ein Praktikant in Sunnyvale geographisch etwas überfordert. Vielleicht gibts bei Yahoo aber auch nur ein Verbot zur Benutzung von Google Earth.

Although the article does not cover the most recent developments, especially the Tunis Summit, Kenneth Neil Cukier's »Who Will Control the Internet« for Foreign Affairs (Nov./Dec. 2005) is still worth reading.

And I'm wondering, is it just me who believes to have discovered a certain reference to one of Seinfeld's most famous lines in this article? Not that there is anything wrong with that ...

As for those in my class who have not seen this Internet archive yet: the Wayback Machine stores old versions of all Web sites once available on the World Wide Web (more or less) and has proofed to be a good tool for doing research on the younger history of the Internet and all kind of Web related issues.

Two examples:
The White House (1997)
University of Halle (1997)

(I really appreciate the usability of Web pages in the »good old days« again, by the way)
