For those of you who have spent hours watching cat videos, or simply go ‘awwww’ every time you see a feline friend, The Hollywood Theatre has planned a weekend just for you. Starting Friday, June 21 and going until Saturday, June 22nd, 2013 the theatre will host the Internet Cat Video Fest and give you the chance to hang out with people who love cats just as much as you do.

The Beatles’ album Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band is one of the high points of the Beatles’ career, as well as one of the most influential albums in all of popular music. Composer, producer and Beatles expert Scott Freiman takes music fans young and old on a magical tour through this masterpiece in “Deconstructing Sgt. Pepper,” an in-depth look at the Beatles’ creative process. This two hour presentation will be held at the historic Hollywood Theatre on June 20 at 7pm, tickets are $10.

Bios from some of the artists
Blaise Barshaw is a Portland native who has had an X-acto knife in his hand for the past 25 years. His paper cuts are made from a single piece of paper and are mounted between glass and acrylic panels to enhance the intricate beauty of each individual cut. These two pieces are from his latest series of work, Up From the Depths, and are inspired by the works of 19^th century artist and scientist Ernst Haeckel who studied and recorded microscopic organism skeletons dredged from the deepest ocean floors. I am fascinated by both their symmetrical patterns and ethereal beauty.
Jen Prokopowicz is an artist and animator and has been focused on using paper in her work for the past 6 years or so.  She enjoys getting outside as often as possible for inspiration, and when she’s not working she’s often in the woods.  There she can be relied upon to lag behind her group in order to get a closer look at tiny thing x, y, or z on the ground.  Raised and educated in Pennsylvania, she now lives and works in Portland, OR.
Laura Jean Graham works as a tattooer at Lady Luck Tattoo here in southeast Portland.  She spends her free time painting, cutting paper, and hanging out with her husband and tiny dog.
Laurie Ann Greenberg has been “cutting” for over 3 decades. A hair stylist for the past 30 years she blends her love of fashion, movement and dance into her paper art. Her tools are simple yet tell a story with paper, glue and glitter. These two original paper cuts are from her “Matinee to Midnight Collection”.  The beauty, power, elegance and grace come alive with colorful rich texture. Laurie Ann is originally from Up State, NY and now enjoys her creative life here in the Pacific NW. Her studio and home is located in NE Portland’s Sullivan’s Gulch. www.etsy.com/shop/LaBoutiques
When not culling insects, organs, and non-sequiturs from cookbooks and medical textbooks, mixed media and installation artist Miranda (ok, Mrrranda) L. Tarrow coaxes dodgy wee beasties from creepy curio cabinets, milkweed-choked marshes, and other people’s trash.  Through idle experiments with light boxes and shadow puppets, her cut-paper pieces quickly grew into a meticulously cultivated menagerie, each creature with its own secret history and ambiguous intent.

A graduate of the University of Michigan, Mrrranda has shared her vivid inner life with Ann Arbor, Detroit, and New York City.  Once an inhabitant of Gracie’s Birdcage and one of Launch Pad Gallery’s helpful little hobs, she continues to scrabble at shadows and static in Portland, Oregon.

Portland-based artist, Bijijoo, is a bit of an enigma. And if you’re wondering if Bijijoo is his real name, it’s not. He went to graduate school for math and has a Ph.D in Chemistry. But these days you can find him creating extremely photorealistic artwork, when he’s not occupied with his day job writing patents for a law firm. His interests are diverse to say the least, but there is not such a wide disparity when you see that a variety of his experiences exposed him to different ideas that inspire a great deal of curiosity and creativity. His paintings will be featured at good:a gallery for the month of June, in his solo show Bugs, Holes, Heads and How-Tos. The show highlights a selection of artwork from a variety of Bijijoo’s curious collections, including several dismembered celebrity head still-lifes. Working from photographs, Bijijoo transforms his compositions with oil paints and a bizarre juxtaposition of realism and fantasy. So photorealistic, in fact, that you have to give it a second look. Believe me when I say its worth a second, third, or fourth look. This show you won’t want to miss. The opening reception is Friday June 7th from 7-10pm, at good:a gallery. The show will remain open during the gallery’s weekend hours, and every second thursday for the Mississippi Art Walk, through June 30th. See you there!
