I have no idea what, but it will be done. I love the show and I'm ten years too late, but what the hell I'm gonna celebrate it anyway. After that a Hunger Games craft.

I apologize for that lack of posts. Kinda lacking the inspiration and the time to create new fan projects. It's been a very productive summer for me. I got my first illustration jobs, my first real job and I'm also pet sitting on the side. I will get back to updating HunkyDorky because I do miss it. So for now here's some of the things I've been up to.
Would love your vote on these if you have the time.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post them, but I didn't read it in my contract so it should be fine.

Portal Cake for Valentine's Day

I feel so bad for neglecting the blog for so long. I will try my best to post more. I finally have a something new for you all. Well at least to say, it was my idea, that was beautifully executed by my room mate. She made it as a Valentine's gift for her boyfriend. I was going to make a cake for my boyfriend but we had to use both boxes of mix on this sugary splendor. So he will have to wait til some other time. So for your Portal Cake your supplies are as follows:

2 boxes of devil's food cake
9 " round cake pan
2 cans of frosting (used vanilla on the inside and chocolate on the outside)
block of baking chocolate or already grated bites
grater (optional)
whip cream or vanilla frosting
piping bag (we used a plastic bag)
strawberries
white candle(s)

Our cake was 4 layers high.

And finally this cake is NOT a lie!
Hey I just noticed that my X files box set is in the background. I think it just adds that little dorky something. :)

Kermit the Frog Cake

It was my boyfriend's birthday on 11th. He loves the Muppets and he does a wicked Kermit the frog impression. So I made him a Kermit cake. Kermit is constructed from a devil's food cake, cream cheese frosting, food coloring and mini chocolate chips.

I'll like to thank my roommate Kelsey. She's always willing to lead a hand. Speaking of roommates I think all of them deserve a shout out. (Meghan and Kez you guys rock!)We learned the Kermit looks like an ODDISH at this stage of his development.

Soulless Kermit will haunt your dreams!

Chop off Kermit's eye's first, he will be absolutely thrilled! I think we did a pretty fine job. Happy Birthday Justin! If anyone is wondering he loved the cake. :)

Doctor Who Halloween Costumes

Last night was a Halloween filled with Gallifreyan goodness. My friends and I dressed as characters from the popular British Doctor Who Series. (I'm the Dalek) We all love the show so we just had to do it. Sadly, since this is the states very few people knew who we were. However the ones that did, definitely we're filled with fanboy joy. We entered the costume contest with lots of cheers from the audience. However, we didn't win because none of the judges knew who we were supposed to be. Either way it was great fun. I just hope that when everyone went home Halloween night and google searched Doctor Who.

At least I know that you all will appreciate our hard work. The Tardis is now sitting in our living room next to our Tenth Doctor poster.

Edible Snails

A week back was my friend's Nina's birthday. So we made snails. She LOVES snails! The first thing we did was bake a box of brownies. Next we took the brownies and mushed them up with 3/4 can of cream cheese frosting. We shaped them into disks. Put them in the freezer for 15 minutes or leave them in the fridge for a few hours.It was 2 in the morning when we did this. So we ended up making the excess into this.

I know classy right.

The next day we sent it across the hall with our friend to eat in front of his roommates and this is what happened.

We dipped the brownie disks in white chocolate to make the snail shells. We used marshmallow fondant dyed with food coloring to create the bodies.

She really loved the result. Happy Birthday Nina Snail! I would like the thank my friends for all they're help making these sweet little critters.

Circuit Board Cake

Today when I checked my inbox I found this awesome techy cake:

This cake was made by Hunky Dorky reader Kaylen Treu for her father's birthday! He's one lucky nerd Dad! Wait, is that a dad whose a nerd or the father of one? Hmm, I guess in this family it applies both ways.

Here's Kaylen's directions on how she created this computer chip confectionery.

You make your cake, whatever flavor, (this one is excellent: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/One-Bowl-Chocolate-Cake-III/Detail.aspx) and wait until it cools. You have to flip it out onto a cake board. If the top is't flat enough, cut that part off. Frost it with some homemade buttercream icing (good recipe: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Buttercream-Frosting/Detail.aspx). Dye the fondant that dark green color by mixing black and green (use gloves) and save a lump to dye the light green color by using just a little bit of the green. Wilton's icing coloring works well. For the circuitry use Royal Icing (http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Royal-Icing-III/Detail.aspx). It's the stuff you use on a ginger bread house and it doesn't taste all that good but it's just for a little design.

Thanks for sharing Kaylen! I'm sure your dad was thrilled.

Borgship Bownies

First off I would like to apologize for my huge gap of time between posts. I will be posting more often from now on. Anywho, my friend's birthday was recently and he's a trekkie so I wanted to make him Borgship Brownies. This are really simple and tasty.
Here's what you need:
box of brownie mix
can of vanilla or cream cheese frosting
vanilla melting chocolate
mini marshmallows
pretzel sticks

I started with baking a box of brownies and frosting them with cream cheese frosting.

Then melt down some vanilla and drip some pretzel sticks.

Stick on some mini marshmallows.

Place on the chocolate pretzels. And you're done! I googled Borg Brownies before I started and was surprised that I didn't get any matching results. It makes me happy to know that I'm nerdy enough to think of star trek desserts. Hope you like them.

Pokemon Birthday Cake

This cake was created for my friends at college. It's a welcome back to school and a birthday cake for those who had their birthday's during the summer months (which in my circle of friends is a lot). I know that the pokemon chosen seem random. However, they each were chosen because they represent the looks and/or personality of each of my friends.

This is my sister and I's first attempt with fondant, so I think it turned out well. We made our own marshmallow fondant because from what I've read is that it's much cheaper and tastier. It tastes like vanilla marshmallows. To add color we used gel food coloring. Here's the fondant recipe we used. We are very happy with the final result. I just hope I can transport it to school in one piece. The total cost of the cake was around $18 dollars.

Here's the back view
We constructed the figures from a batch of Rice Krispie treats. Each one was covered in colored fondant, we colored it with food color gel (try not to use the liquid food coloring because it will alter the consistency of the fondant and make it too watery).

For the grassy knoll, we use three boxes of cake mix. The buttercream recipe and frosting tip (the ones we used to make the Tribble cupcakes) were used to create the grass. The frosting grass was used to cover our not to perfect fondant cake covering. Still, I think it adds a lot of charm to the pokecake.

More marshmallow fondant was used to add Pokeballs, berries and other details.

After a three hour and 11 minute journey to school with a cake on my lap. (I had my car packed with my school things, so there was not really another option) we finally ate it. Here are some photos of my friends enjoying their pokecake. Happy Birthday to my buddies. I love them.

Okami Latch Hook Rug

This rug was created as a birthday present for my great friend and college room mate who just adores the game. If you haven't heard about it, you should check it out. It's a game with unique style and a lot of charm. The rug is about 21/2' long and 3' wide. I really wanted to make her an Okami carpet for her new room in our on campus apartment and this was the cheapest way I could find. The total cost of the project was around 25 dollars. It really is simple, but time consuming. I rushed to get it done in time for the start of the school year (done in about two weeks), so the process was not as enjoyable as it could have been. I also ran out of orange yarn near the end, so I had to go back to store. I bought the wrong shade of orange and had to go back again. That was fun. Any who...

Here's what I used to make it:

Blank latch hook canvas (purchased at a local craft store for 10 bucks and cut down to the desired size)
Permanent marker(s)
Latch Hook
Scissors
clear thread
Wool 0r Acrylic Yarn of need colors cut down to lengths of 2"
Cardboard for rolling and cutting yarn
Rubber cement
Scotch guard

So to start I drew out on my design onto the canvas using black and red sharpies. Make sure you put it down on a white surface that you can clean. I used my tile floor and cleaned it off with that Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (that thing works wonders). Also leave about an inch boarder from each side to fold under later.

If you are not artistic you could use the grid method to transfer you design.

Now to the latch hooking.
Here's a video on how to do it. I had to have someone show me how to do it. I couldn't figure it out with just the picture directions. So if you need a visual demonstration here you are.

Repeat, A LOT.

Here's a gif of my progress:

I took a picture about every day (missed a coulpe though).
When you are finished latch hooking, you want to flip it over and use the rubber cement to seal up the back as best as you can. Make sure you do this in a well ventilated area.
Fold the bare canvas sides in and sew them down using thread.
Now you even out the yarn in the front using scissors.
Last, spray it with scotch guard to help protect it from getting dirty.

You should be warned that this type of rug is decorative, it will get trashed pretty easily. So treat your new custom rug with great care. If don't want to risk ruining it, you could use it as a wall hanging instead.

Hello Kitty Cookies and then some...

\My sister loves Hello Kitty, so we made some cookies and a cookie cutter. For these I wanted to go for taste over looks. If you want to make them more attractive, you could use royal icing, instead of the canned frosting. They would turn out smoother and more professional looking.
Here's my custom cutter.
If you want to know how to make them, check out this post.

I'm not a fan of the sugar cookie. (I know I'm weird right) So I like to experiment with other types of roll out cookies. For these, I used a peanut butter roll out dough. They tasted great.

So now for decorating your kitties.

Gather some red, yellow and brown M&Ms.

You want to cut the yellow and brown in half.

In these pictures I feel like a candy dealer.
(Which is, when I think about, not really a bad thing.)For the bows pipe on the laces and apply a red M&M to the middle.Add her cute little face with you M&M halves. Just so you know, I really wanted to add whiskers using black shoestring licorice. However, apparently its like the Mewto of the candy world. I looked high and low for them, but the only place I could find them was the internet.

So in the end, I decided that the whiskers were not really needed. I didn't see the point of buying a 9lb bag of a candy that I don't enjoy eating and would peel off the cookie anyway. However, if you can find the elusive devils somewhere or you like them, by all means make your Hello Kitties more recognizable. Happy Dorky Baking.

Also, HunkyDorky reader Rachel Price, sent me these wonderful cookies that she made for her friends. I'm sure she will be worshipped for these amazing dorky cookies. They include PacMan, Inky & Pinky, "Red Velvet Red Ring Of Death" Cookies, Cinnamon Mario Stars, "Play-Doh Maddness" Sugar cookies. Thanks for sharing Rachel! I also like the empty wine bottles in the background. It looks like she had a really good time baking these treats.

Terminator Converse Sneakers

I would like to thank the awesome Geek Crafts once again, for featuring this craft. It is a true honor and they definitely get the HunkyDorky seal of approval.

Well I lied to you, they're not really converse brand. I used knock offs from the department store, since I knew I was going to be doodling on them. Terminator 2 is high up on my list of all time favorite films. I must say that the Third film is on the bottom of said list. I know I've watched it, but all I can remember is that there is a chick terminator in it. (I think that's a bad sign) So with that I had to celebrate it. I put the logos of the two opposing forces from the films on the sides of my shoes. I used the same technique as I did with the x files back pack.

The right shoe has the Resistance symbol, the Red Double Helix.

The left shoe has the Skynet logo.

I tried to make stencils at first, but the designs were too intricate and small for me to cut out. So I drew and painted them on. I just love my new hi tops, I think I'll wear them until Judgment Day. Or until the T-1000 shows up and I chuck them at him in terror.

Tardis Ipod Case

This is what I had to make after watching all of BBC's new Doctor Who series in about two days. I really feel like I missed the boat on this great sci fi series for way too long (I've only saw a few episode before). I just love it. It's really original TV.
Thanks to my Doctor Who over indulgence I was inspired to make a Tardis case for my ipod nano. Now it's nice and safe in the blue box. Firstly I would like to state, I've not sewn since six grade homec class. I wasn't very good at it then either. My mom was a wonderful help with this. I think my inspiration took over my inability. It's a good project for beginners (like me).

My favorite feature of my new Tardis case is this:

The Doctor is In.
It glows inside when my ipod is on! I didn't discover
this until about half way through making it. It made me very happy.

I just love it's quirky homemade charm.

So if your interested in your own, this is how it came to be.

Supplies

blue, black, yellow, white fabric (I used felt that costed 30 cents a piece, I would recommend something of better qualilty now that I made mine)
matching thread
needle
fabric glue
pins
fabric scissors
ruler
cardboard
velcro for fabric
ipod
keychain

I started with a quick sketch.

New I placed my ipod on the felt about 3/4" away from both sides and cut it down.
Then I folded it to create a pocket.

Pin the pouch in place.Sew up the sides and remove the excess with scissors.Now you want to create the front of the Tardis. I measured the center
point and drew out my design using a ball point pen.Cut out the windows and sign.

Glue white felt inside top of the case.

Use dark blue thread to add your window panes to your Tardis.Use felt covered cardboard to create the top and a piece of black felt for the top sign.
When covering the cardboard make sure to leave excess on the bottom to attach it to your case. Now create a strip of yellow for the inner lining of your case.
Add the key chain and the farbic velcro (I had to sew mine on).On a side note my sister made cupcake cakeballs for our friend's birthday party. I thought she did a fine job so I thought I'd post them. If you would like the recipe you can find it here.

Star Trek TNG Communicator Cookies

First off I would like to apologize for not posting for awhile, I've been absolutely obsessed with Doctor Who (David Tennant) episodes so I had to finish them all before doing anything. This is my desktop right now: Also I finished a project for one of my room mates, which I will post once I give it to her. So no more excuses, for some reason all the baking I do seems to be Star Trek related. (The trend isn't going to end soon either.)
Anyway this is just a test. I got some cookie cutter crafting aluminum wire. Which after a long search at my local stores, and some really odd looks from a home depot employee. I had to buy it online, I bought it here. So I made my first cutter. I wanted it to be simple, so I went with the Star Trek insignia from the series. More specifically the communicator from The Next Generation. (I love Data!) So, I didn't buy the entire kit, just the refill. However, if you want to make some cookie cutters and don't feel too confident with it, I would advise you to get the kit.
Here are the cookie cutter crafting directions I used.
So once again this is just a taste of what's to come. I'll be making some more intricate cookies in the near future. Today I felt like chocolate chip, obviously sugar or any roll out cookies would work better with cookie cutters.

So go off and make some great dorky cookies!

How to Make a Serenity Pendent

I am not happy with how this came out, so it took me awhile to post it. I made a pendent from the Serenity's logo from the (oh so awesome) Firefly series.It was going to be a gift for the person who first introduced me the series, however I'm not happy with its quality. So I'll probably just use it as a paper weight.

It you don't know Firefly, it's a western in space! It's sooo cool!
If you would like to make one (that's hopefully prettier than mine),
here are the materials you will need:

Wax paper
polymer clay
shot glass or circle cookie cutter
paper clip
rolling pin
quarter
acrylic paints
red permanent marker
sand paper
gloss
necklace cord

First, you want to knead you clay into the colors that you want.

Then roll them flat and even with a rolling pin.

Now cut out the larger circle with the shot glass.
Mold the second piece around a quarter.
Take another quarter and make an impression into the larger piece
where you would like the other to be. Create a hole for the cord with a paperclip.
Bake it in the oven, according to package directions.

When I removed it from the oven I notice my outside circle was wonky,
so I sanded it down to create a better circle.
Paint the pendent.

Draw on the serenity symbol with your marker.
Add the gloss varnish. Finally, slip it on to the cord.
Your Done!

Graboid Pen & Pencil Holder

This craft/art idea was made because I'll be going back to school in less than a month, so I wanted to create something that would give my dorm room some dorky personality. I enjoy the Tremors movies so I made a Graboid Pencil Holder for my desk (my mom thinks I'm werid). I think a lot of my projects in the near future will be for decorating my new school space.

If you don't know what the heck a Graboid is, please watch the first 3 Tremors films. They are full of fun, cheesy, sci fi movie goodness.

Here's what you will need to make one of your own:

gloves
soup can
aluminum can
scissors
aluminum foil
super sculpey
exactoknife
acrylic paints and painting supplies
reference pictures are always useful
rubbing alcohol (optional)
varnish (optional)

Please before you begin, use a pair of gloves when you are
handling your can, I didn't and this is what happened
I got a booboo!
Someone in my house didn't use the usual can
opener that leaves a smooth edge.
Anyway on to

Step one:

Remove your label from your soup can.

Use your aluminum foil to build up the desire shape. The more foil you
use for this process the less sculpey you will use. The foil is lighter and
less expensive so I tried to build the bulk of my sculpture out of it.

Cut out the four pieces of the head using the aluminum can.
Attach them using sculpey. Start bulding out the form using the foil first and then add clay.

Here's the holder without any detail.
I find rubbing alcohol works well for helping to smooth out the
form when using super sculpey.

Now use the exacto knife or sculpting tools add the details and textures.
Just remember that textures should look like they have a reason for
being on the body of the creature. Now bake it according to the box directions.

Once it is baked, give it a fitting paint job and some varnish.

Here is an image of the finished piece without the writing
instruments stuffed down its gullet.

Edible Golden Stitches

I can not believe it! Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince was released July 15th for our viewing pleasure! Being such a momentously dorky occasion a bake good had to made in its honor. Disappointingly, I did not get to attend the midnight showing. My sister was sick and I could not bear to see it without her.(She's the one who introduced me to the books.) So we went on Wednesday afternoon.

Anyway, filled with fan girl glee we made this:

The Golden Snitch, it's melting in my hand!

So inspired by this we put some of them on sticks
I'm sure that this recipe could be made a lot pretty by someone who has more baking experience. We got our inspiration from something my sister makes often, cake balls. They are delicious and I thought, what can I make that into that is Harry Potter related. Snitches, they would be perfect! The recipe for cake balls is pretty simple, we originally got it from here. It's one of our favorites blogs, her stuff is absolutely incredible. Anyway, lets get down to potion's class, muggle style.

So to start your Snitches you will need:
* 13X9 baked cake from a box cake mix or from scratch any flavor you wish (I would suggest a yellow cake just in case you can't get it to cover completely)
* can cream cheese frosting (or about 2 cups from scratch)
* a package yellow chocolate melting wafers (you can also use white waffers and just add some food coloring.)
* royal icing
* wax paper
*big marshmallows

Now bake a cake:

Crumble it up into a bowl, add the frosting. I ended up only making half the cake (we still have tribble cupcakes in the freezer).

Now we mash it all up using your hands. Wash your hands after (it's going to be squishy).

Take some of the mixture and roll it up into a ball.

Here are mine:
Put them in the fridge for a several hours or 30 minutes in the freezer.

Meanwhile, melt you chocolate in the microwave or double boiler according to the directions on the package.
Remove the balls from the freezer and give them a bath in the chocolate. Put your cake balls on a stick or use a tooth pick. If you can't get it to cover all around use a spoon to drizzle the chocolate.

Good Luck with Dipping!

Now on to the wings.

I cut the wings out of the marshmallows and used the left over pieces to create individual feathers or I drew them on using a black edible marker. Then I attached them to the side of you flightless stitches with some royal icing. Put in fridge to cool again. Lastly remove them one more time and serve!

We wish you all good luck with this project. If you have a vial of Liquid Luck it could come in handy. They taste really good, so they are worth the effort in the end.

Doctor Who: Easy Adipose Paper Craft

Well I enjoy watching Doctor Who from time to time. One of my favorite little critters from the series are the

Adipose.

I did not create the original shape template for this project. I was inspired by this 3D paper craft. So I decided to turn it into something for me and a craft to post on this blog. Hopefully I do not get in trouble for making it.
So if you would like to make it here is what you will need

Template sized at 8.5"x11(I printed mine on glossy paper)
Scissors
glue/scotch tape

Here's the template (click to full size) and make sure you resize it for printing:

That's it. Just cut out the pieces and then put the tabs were they should be, it's quite simple. I really hope someone with loads of printer ink creates an army of these guys. Also,If you are up for some really challenging dorky paper craft projects check out this awesome blog.

Drinks We All Wish Were Real!

Today's post is inspired by Sunday's True Blood bottle cap creation. Of course everyone loves a delicious beverage. Even our fictional friends have some reliable brand names. These are some mouthwatering beverages that I and I think every nerd would love to chug. You should also know that most of these beverages have a real life counterpart that you can buy in energy or alcoholic drink form. Disappointingly, they lack the fun or unsavory side effects.

I am currently the proud owner of six fictional bottle caps (Always looking to add more to my collection if you have any suggestions!). I have ordered my collection in order of personal preference (or the I wish it was real factor)

A the end of my list is...

Slurm Cola

This highly addictive soft drink is from the cult classic animated series Futurama. Which I hear is returning in 2010! This soda pop is created by the Slurm Worms, a race of slug-like aliens. All the galaxy's Slurm is made in a factory on their home world, Wormulon. However, this factory is a just a cover, the true secret of Slurm being a fluid made by the Slurm Queens. Through what I would say is quite a graphic process. It is because of this that Slurm is at the end of my list. However, a drink that tasty is still a little bit tempting. Hey don't judge, I love honey and that's bee spew.

Duff Beer

This next refreshment is a staple in the Simpson household, being Homer's drink of choice. Although it is revealed that regular Duff, Duff Light, and Duff Dry are the all same. Still, no one ever said Homer had a distinguished palette. This is a man who will eat a rotten 10-foot hoagie, 64 slices of American cheese and free sidewalk goo. This beer is only #5 on my list because of its lack of sophistication. However, I can honestly say we could all do with some Duffman commercials.

Romulan Ale

Romulan ale is a intoxicating alcoholic beverage of the Romulans from Star Trek. It has a blue color (it ranges in shades depending on the drinks age). This tantalizing liquid is three on my list for it's ability to be used for medical reasons. It's rarity is also a factor in my choice because of its current illegal status with the Federation. Even the Starfleet replicators have to be programed with the ale's genetic structure first to create it. Even with it being outlawed , almost every Starfleet officer has been shown indulging in it. So if you like some of this blue booze, the only way to find it is on the black market or to make allies with a Romulan fleet of Warbirds. Good Luck with that.

Butterbeer

There is no doubt that most of you muggles have heard of this warming drink from the fictional world of Harry Potter. Which, from the film Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, I would say that it contains alcohol. I for one would be overjoyed to taste the drink that Rowling herself describes as "a little bit like less-sickly butterscotch", if such wonder existed in the world, then my days spent daydreaming of brooms sticks and quidditch would seem possible.

Tru Blood

Okay, so this beverage made to be a blood substitute, wouldn't be that appealing to us mortals. But it would mean that we could socialize with the undead, the sultry, seductive types known as vampires. They could finally come out of their closet or..er..coffin to be politically correct. With the existence of this drink not just vampires would be out in the open, but other species as well. Such as the werewolves and the shifters. However, with all these new introductions into our world, turmoil will likely takeover, leaving us to wonder if it was worth it in the end. Making it number #2 on the list for it's unbelievable (cool) and political consequences.

And the winner...

Wonka's Fizzy Lifting Drinks

My number one fantasy drink can be found in the classic Gene Wilder film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Not the horrifying remake (seriously it gave me nightmares). This fizzing elixir isn't just tasty, but causes you to float. Who doesn't want that? The ability to fly from a simple sip. It would change the society in which we live. We could travel using this soft drink and release much fewer carbon emissions into the atmosphere. We would be transporting, using only our natural gases. It would be a more flatulent world, but a greener one. Hear me scientists, invent Wonka's Fizzy Lifting Drinks and save the polar bears!

FYI, the caps above were created in the same way as Sunday's post, just in case I choose to wear them as jewelry or give them away as presents.

Make a True Blood Bottlecap Necklace

Well, True Blood is on the fantasy side of the blog. However, if it's at all dorky then it's up for grabs. This show is a guilty pleasure of mine. If you haven't seen it, here's a formula review.

Twilight + SEX and adult themes+Harry Potter-wizards =True Blood

The show is based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries novels by Charlaine Harris. It revolves around a synthetic blood drink (True Blood) that is created so vampires no longer have to feed on humans and can go public. It's airs on Sundays on HBO, which means tonight.

So if you wish to create this or any other bottle cap necklace follow this guide. Just so you all know this is the easiest and quickest project I have done so far. It took about 30 minutes and that included a 15 minute baking time and 5-10 minutes trying to find a decent pair of wire cutters.

Supply List:

A bottle cap
2" lenght of wire (I used picture hanging wire)
adhesive that seals well
Jewelry cord, I got mine at a local flea market for $1.00
Polymer clay of any color of your choosing
The true blood image or any other image you want to place on your bottle cap. The image size I used was 1.05" width.
Paint and paint brush (optional)
Gloss for sealing (optional)

Here's the image I used:

But if you have a funky sized bottle cap you can use this image and size it as you wish.

Now you want to create the little loop for you cord to go through. To do this grab your wire and a paintbrush or any object that you can loop around. The wire length should be about 2 inches.

Then you...

twist.

Place the wire into the bottle cap.

Mold you polymer clay until it is soft and fill up the back of your bottle cap.
Now you want to bake your bottle cap face down on parchment paper in the oven according to the directions on the package.
While it baked I took the time to cut out the image and slowly eat some pecan pie (dumb show reference if you don't get it just move on, if you do good for you).
Now remove it from the oven and make sure you wait for it to cool before you touch it, it is metal and it was in the oven.

Since the color of bottle cap was not the one I desired, I painted the edges with red acrylic paint. However, you can be smart and buy a bottle of Coke. If you did just proceed to the next step. If not wait for it dry and then you can go on. Still, you have to admit the paint makes for a good shot for a post about a vampire show.

Glue away, I used puzzle glue, but go ahead and experiment, you might find something better.
Also, I would suggest using a gloss of some kind to make it blend better. I didn't have any so it doesn't look as finished as it could.

Now for the finished product...

Make an Alien Book Hugger

I would like to thank the awesome Geek Crafts for featuring this craft. It is a true honor and they definitely get the hunkydorky seal of approval.

Today's project is a tribute to my love of the Alien films. Which will likely be a recurring theme in this blog. On a personal note, I like to pretend that the 3rd and 4th films don't exist (It makes my life better). So on to the craft, this much nicer species of the alien parasite holds your place in your book. Instead of impregnating you with a murderous newborn, it's much nicer to have around. With this bookmark you can make it as simple or as detailed as you want.

First if you would like to create one here is my pattern:

You are meant to cut the outer and red solid lines and fold on the dotted. However, I didn't find folding to be necessary. Mine is sized about 4"x8", but feel free to adjust it to the size that is right for you.

By the way, this is just the process that I used so you can change it if you would like. A simpler way would be to color it in on a coloring program and print out both sides on a piece of card stock.

Supply list: Facehugger pattern, cereal box, pencil and graphite stick, scissors/xacto knife, glue stick, acrylic paint, color pencils or any other coloring media you want to use.

I used a Special K box for mine.

So first we have to transfer the image onto the cardboard, and this is the simplest and cheapest way that I know how to do it. First you want to flip over the image to the back. Now you want to cover the ghost image with graphite. You can use a pencil for this, but a graphite stick covers quicker. Then you flip you pattern back onto it's front on the cardboard. Make sure you keep it still while you trace over the lines with pencil. Lift up the paper and you should have something like this.

It transferred very well.

Cut the little bugger out.

Flip it over and trace around it. Cut out the other piece.
Don't try to make it perfect this time just fudge it.

Now you want to glue the two halves together. I used puzzle glue because I had it laying around to use on tomorrow's craft, but a regular old glue stick will work just fine. I also sealed the sides to prevent the two pieces peeling apart. After it dries remove the rest of edges with your cutting tools.

You will probably find the the middle section is very weak. I sure did, but don't fear All you have to do is reinforce it. Use some small long rectangular scarp cardboard pieces and paste them to the middle on both sides.

Now we paint, use your creativity! Make it as cute or realistic as you please.

Me I tried to make mine semi-realistic.
