When the inshore water temperature hits 68 degrees, the locals flock to the beaches and passes to try their luck at catching pompano. The Pompano are related to Permit and are considered a delicacy to most anglers. Pompano seem to congregate in the winter following the sand fleas into the passes and onto the beaches. One of my personal favorite ways to catch pompano is throwing Pompano Jigs.

One of the most popular and successful jigs is the goofy jig. The jigs action and color sets it apart from the others. The jig imitates a sand flea as it pumps and berries its self into the sand. You fish them by popping the jig off the bottom then letting them sink back and TOUCH the bottom again. The pompano will hit on the fall or after the jig hits the sand. Try HFDepots Pompano Orange and Pompano Sun Yellow for best results in most water colors because the fish can see them best . A teaser can also be added to the top to imitate a egg sack which will trigger more aggressive bites. Also try adding Pro-cure scent because pompano have an excellent sense of smell. Old school anglers will even tip the jig with a piece of shrimp or sand flea. Sand fleas can be found by digging in the wash line on the beach.

When your ready to head out to try your luck, look for passes, sand bars, drop offs holes etc. Pompano will sit and feed in places where the sand is swept away bringing food by their faces. Also, along the beaches on the second sandbar or the drop off in between the beach and first sand bar. Pompano can be found from North Carolina to Mississippi. South Florida in the winter and spring has the largest concentration of Pompano that I have found. Some of my favorite passes to fish are Midnight Pass near Sarasota and the Cut at St. George Island. The best thing about catching pompano is it can be done from the beach without a boat.

Health Benefits Of Fishing

Fishing has always been a great sport, means of income for some and a passionate past time for many seeking that huge catch. Not surprisingly, most people fish just for the love of it. What a lot of people do not realize is that fishing is the sport that gives back in more than one way. Not only does it provide food for many people across the globe, but it is a great means of physical activity. It may be improper to talk about fishing without recognizing the health benefits it has to offer.

An average person may think of fishing as what it entails; sitting in a boat or on the bank waiting for the fish to hit. Contrary to this idea, there is much more to fishing which makes every catch worth it. When you engage in fishing, you will subconsciously tap into the health benefits that it has to offer. So why not burn some calories while doing something fun.

Despite your level of experience, many different types of fishing like kayak fishing, wade fishing and offshore fishing leave you physically and mentally engaged in the activity. A lot of great fish are caught by other means of fishing other than by boat. This could be by hiking into remote place, through saltmarsh or any other type of environments. One of these methods is by actually getting into the water and wade fishing. Undoubtedly, wade fishing has appeared to be the best option for anglers who wants to get close to the fish they seek. It takes a bit of courage to wade in water as high up to your waist, but you stand a chance to catch fish you will be proud of. The wade fishing engages your body and mind entirely in the fish catching exercise.

When you take a look at kayak fishing and the benefits associated with it, you may be tempted to undermine the usual fishing from a boat. The wider fishing kayak gives up speed for stability, as an efficient fishing machine, you can get to every inshore spot with it. Ever imagined fishing without noise? A scenario where it is just you and nature, you can the fish very close to you without any noise scaring the fish away. In fact, Kayak fishing offers you a whole lot of health benefits while increasing your chances of a higher catch.

Engaging in the fishing makes you keep fit and healthy at no small measure. Thinking of starting out fishing, there are significant health benefits that await you, and for those that are already into fishing, you are currelty reaping these benefits.

The key to a happy heart is through fishing. You can take this literallary and physically. Exercise that raises the heart rate can be beneficial to great heart health. Most anglers achieve this by walking around their favorite fishing spot casting, kayaking around the marsh or bay, or even wade fishing. This is all done to achieve one of the greatest feelings of catching that monster fish. These activities are guaranteed to keep your heart rate up, while burning calories doing what you love. Often times this may be the only time people get out and become active. Burning calories fishing is better than sitting on your couch watching television. Plus you can always land dinner to take home.

Stress is unfortunately something that everyone struggles with. It often can result in other issues if it gets the best you. This is why we highly recommend fishing as the ultimate stress reliever. Some of the best stress therapy is achieved by going out and throwing a line in the water. Being outdoors allows for people to clear their mind and take in all that nature has to offer. Unplugging from the digital world and keying into the natural scenery creates a feeling of excitement and brings a sense of calmness to any angler. Many anglers use recreational sport fishing as a means of therapy to help reduce the need of medication for mood and attitude adjustments. There definitely is some truth behind your doctor prescribing a day of fishing.

Fishing is a natural meditative activity that opens your eye to the natural surroundings. Whatsoever be the reason why a fisherman fishes, be it for the money, fun, get together or hang out with friends; the supreme sense of calmness and relaxation that comes with fishing is excellent. The therapeutic exercise is apt for persons with issues of trauma. Fishing requires you to input your undivided attention to get over the exciting challenges of fishing, locating a fish, developing and applying strategy, choosing the right fly, and accurately presenting the fish with the lure are all products of a calculative mental activity. These mental activities brighten your mental capability and offer you an escape route from anxiety, stress and even depression.

FISHING AS AN EXERCISE ALTERNATIVE

Not surprisingly, some people still think that fishing is not an exercise, perhaps this is why they have been neglecting this fun filled activity. Of course, you may not burn tons of calories while sitting on your kayak or wading in a stream, but to an extent, you get a workout without going to the gym. Wade fishing burns as much as twice the calories burn over an hour period. Fishing is a great exercise that you may not know; you build your balance while resisting the water currents and overcoming the slippery rocks. We are by no means telling you to neglect the gym, but if you are thinking about laying around the house or getting out there to fish, then by all means go fishing!

Phosphorus and calcium are necessary minerals that boost the body’s immune system and stand against disease. While these metals perform this function, vitamin D controls their absorption. Vitamin D is absorbed from the sun when you are outdoors fishing. The more time you spend under the sun, the more vitamin D is absorbed which raises your vitamin D level and overall helping to improve your immune health.

FISHING TO LOSE WEIGHT

The average American person is overweight. Unfortunately obesity is a problem in the united states and does not appear to be going away any time soon. With access to fast food and unhealthy food choices we have to come up with ways to manage weight gain. So what is our best way to lose weight? FISHING! Being outdoors and fishing makes you active while burning some calories, which in return increases your metabolism. Several options like kayak fishing and wade fishing will burn more calories than other. The resistance of walking through the water serves as a great way to increase your heart rate. So if you love fishing and are looking for a great means of losing weight, pick up kayak fishing today and reduce those calories.

FISHING TO IMPROVE MOBILITY, STRENGTH AND FLEXIBILITY

Kayak fishing is an activity that can greatly improve your strength, flexibility, and even aerobic fitness. While kayaking under the sun improves your vitamin D production, your arms, muscles, shoulders are greatly improved due to paddling. This is a full upper body workout. From your biceps, triceps, chest and core. This intense workout will only improve your strength and flexibility. Kayak fishing and wade fishing are quickly becoming mainstream. People are choosing to partake in these activities for exercise rather than fish from a motorized boat.

We are by no means re-inventing the wheel here. We are just informing you of the healthy benefits fishing has to offer. If you want to drop a few pounds and become an overall healthy person. Monitor your diet and take up fishing. So get out there and fish, feel the nature and get a workout to keep healthy and fit.

The most effective way of locating birds in the morning is the owl hoot. A lot of times a hot bird will gobble on the roost without a locator call. Any decent owl call will work, even using your mouth. When a bird gobbles on the roost move towards him with the cover of darkness. You want to get close but not too close. Stay out of sight of the bird and set up silent. Just before fly down time I like to let out one soft tree yelp. No other calling is needed until he flies down. If he gobbles at the tree yelp I shut up. A tree yelp is a very soft 5-7 note yelp where he can barely hear you.

After he hits the ground I call again. This time, a louder yelp (kee-kee) in early season or even a cut at a hot bird. If he responds again I shut up. From here on out it's all about keeping him on line. He will only gobble if you entice him or if he is unsure of where you are. Simple clucks, purrs, or whines will seal the deal 99% of the time.

Less is more when it comes to calling.

Afternoon Birds- If i am unsuccessful in the morning, or I get to the woods late I have a tactic that has proven to be effective over the years. On windy days I use a box call, on most days i cycle through my different tone mouth calls. I walk, and walk, and walk, I have walked over 12 miles in one day looking for a bird that is hot enough to work. I let out three yelps every couple hundred yards. If i get a gobble, I yelp again. If he answers I set up because he is coming. After this point I make sure there are no fences or creeks in the turkeys path to me. Again with the calling, less is more. Personally i don't use decoys in woods. It only gives a reason for the bird to spook. I like to get in a thick patch and scratch with my hands to close the gap if need be.

Strut Zones-When a bird is patterned during the season they will have specific area they like to go after the hens leave them late morning. A lot of times you can see a figure 8 pattern on the ground with some feathers around and scratch marks. They like swamps, ridges, and even small openings to strut in. When I locate a bird in his strut zone I will come back the next day and set up a few decoys in the area. An Avian-X strutter decoy works well in this situation with a hen or a jake mixed in. Often times calling is not even needed when hunting with decoys.

The demand for fish and seafood for human and animal consumption has led the commercial fishing industries to drastic measures that harm the whole aquatic ecosystem. Unfortunately human intervention to save certain species such as salmon by fish farming and through hatcheries is not the solution as it promotes further imbalance in the marine ecosystem. The alarming rate of the deterioration of the marine ecosystem can lead to near extinction of marine life, especially fishes, small and large and most sea creatures by 2048. It is up to us anglers to do our share in protecting the different bodies of water and the creatures that live in it, improve and restore the balance to save these aquatic resources. Angling and the environment are intrinsically linked. Love and respect for the ecosystem and the environment where fishes thrive are characteristics of anglers whether this is marine environment or inland waters.

Our waters are quite fragile and detrimentally impacted by different human activities from agricultural, industrial and fishing industry practices that proved harmful to the balance of marine and fresh water ecosystems. Here are major issues that should be watched and merit our full awareness:

Over Fishing - the system of catching fish faster than they can reproduce is harmful in two ways. Large fish such as tuna and snappers are affected by overfishing as these are caught even before they have the chance to grow to full maturity and are able to spawn or reproduce. Smaller fishes, big fishes’ prey are also targeted as these are considered delicacies, mackerel, anchovies, shrimp and squid. This created a disruption in the marine food chain.

By Catch - the use of gillnets and bottom trawling in fishing practices catches other marine life such as turtles, birds and other aquatic creatures that become collateral damages in catching fish. Bottom trawling even goes as far destroying the natural sea floor habitat, destroying coral in the process of catching fish. Broad sweeping methods of catching fish causes damage to marine life as these also catch sharks, dolphins and turtles among other marine creatures. It is estimated that for every pound of shrimp caught from a broad sweep is equivalent to 6 pounds of collateral damage from catching other species. Different species of sharks are in danger of extinction partly because of broad sweep methods.

Inshore fishing on a budget

Fishing is one of the most expensive hobbies one can have. It doesn’t matter what kind you do, you will still need fishing equipment and gear. Not every angler is made of money. A lot of us have normal jobs, families and other things that require our money on a monthly basis. We are going to show you how you can go fishing for $100 dollars and have gear and equipement that your friends will still respect.

Obviously one of the most costly expense of fishing is your boat. Boats vary from 1K dollars to upwards of millions. We are going to assume that you already have a boat or are going fishing on friends for this blog.

The first thing you will need to get is a rod and reel. Let's take a closer look at the best available saltwater reel that you can get at a bargan and still leave enough for the rest of your budget. All of my saltwater reels have always been Penn. They have been trusted over time and always withstand the elements during my saltwater fishing trips.

Now that you have a reel you need a rod to put it on. There are many custom rods on the market that are top of the line and will cost a pretty penny. One rod that I have used all my life and will continue to use no matter how much money I make is the Shakespeare Ugly Stik Intercoastal Spinning Rod. This rod will cost you $39.96 at any local Walmart. This will keep you within your budget and allow you to have a sweet setup. At this point, you have spent about 2/3 off your budget. Now its time to get fishing line and lures to ensure you catch the fish you are looking for.

Now you have to figure our what kind of line to put on your new real. I typically use braid on my saltwater rod, but I feel this will put us over our alotted budget. So for the purpose of this article we will use the next best thing, clear blue monofilament. Since we are doing inshore fishing we will get 12lb or higher. I personally buy all my fishing line for Vicious Fishing. They are leading the way with some of their braids and they make a damn good monofilament.

20lb. Vicious Fishing Clear Blue Ultimate Mono (330 yd. Spool)for $4.99 is the best deal for your money. This line will allow for you to handle any vicious bite you get, but will always deliver in those special moments. This gives you more security in your gear and allows for you to land more fish.

Now the most important thing of all. The lures that will actually catch the fish. Since we have about 15 dollars left on our budget I will be recommending two different lures that are guaranteed to catch you any inshore fish. The first you will need jig heads for. Our guys at C & B Jigs make a great jig head. Their 1/2oz. Minnow Jig Head in Rootbeer Flake paint is eactly what you need. A pack of 10 will cost you $8.59. With these you will use the Gulp Shrimp in root beer gold. These cost about $6.99 a pack. The Trout, flounder and reds love these. This will bring your total buget to about 100.57 without tax.

The last lure that I have had my most success on is the Vudu Mambo Mullet. These lures come pre weighted and are sure to clean house on the reds and trout. They are 4 inches and weigh 1/2oz. The most successful color I have found is Silver Flakes/ Black Flakes. They are made to last a hit. They are very durable and create a vibraiting sound in the water from its tail movement. One of these will cost you $8.49. This allows for you to stay under your $100 dollar budget and let you have one of the best new lures on the market. The only down fall is you only have one lure so do not get it cut off, hung or spooled by a big fish. Then you will be borrowing lures from your buddy.

Running short on money this month and want to still go fishing. No worries! Getting out on the boat with the right gear is possible with only a benjamin is your pocket. Plus this guarentees you a lure that is known to catch fish. Unfortunaly, catching fish is something that requires a little skill like knowing where the fish are and how to fish for them. Get out there and start fishing!

Snook or Linesiders are one of my favorite inshore fish to target in South Florida. The Gulf snook extends from New Port Richey to the Keys and the Atlantic snook range is from Daytona Beach to the keys. However, with the warmer winters snook have been found all the way up to Jacksonville here on the east coast of Florida. Snook are known for the excellent table fare as well as screaming drags and violent head shakes.

The first step when it comes to catching large mature snook is understanding their habits. In the winter the snook move back into rivers, creeks, and canals where the water stays warmer and more temperate. Snook are able to survive in freshwater and have been known to live in ponds year round. Freshwater springs in some rivers release the same temperature water year round and makes these creeks a great place for wintertime snook. As the water begins to warm and the rains comec the snook begin to push out from the back waters and head to the ocean. They move down the rivers and onto the flats towards the inlets and beaches. During the spring snook can be caught all over the flats. Look for deep holes and channels next to good flats with sources of food. Shrimp, mullet, pilchards, pinfish, and threadfins are all great sources of food for all sized snook. During the summer months the snook spawn around the inlets and offshore. Concentrate on jetties, bridges, piers, beaches, mains inlets and channels, and offshore wrecks. When the water begins to cool in the fall the snook make their way back into the creeks, canals, and backwaters to survive the winter.

Once you have information on where the snook like to live and you locate them, it's time to pick the right bait. For larger snook my favorite bait is large mullet. The bigger the better. a 40 inch snook has a mouth with a 6 inch diameter and can eat very large baits. a 2 lb mullet is a easy treat for a hungry snook. Free lined mullet work very well with a small nose hook over deep holes and inlets. If free lining does not work try a live bait on a Carolina rig on the bottom. I have even caught snook on dead bait on the bottom also. Snook have been caught on many different baits in many different locations. Shrimp, ladyfish, mullet, white bait, threadfins, pinfish, whole squid, all of these baits will work at certain times. The key is to figure out what the snook are feeding on in that area and use it for bait. A live whole mullet free lined on the surface will guarantee you snook if they are in the area. Shrimp is a great bait for winter time or even to entice the larger fish when the shrimp are in.

If live bait is difficult to come by artificial can work well also. As for artificial baits to use for snook I would suggest a D.O.A. Shrimp in root beer, gold, or other natural colors for clear water. Topwater lures such as Heddon Super Spook, or a Bomber Badonkadonk work very well. I use natural mullet colors along with chartreuse depending on the amount of sunlight. For targeting deeper snook there are some great swimbaits, large buck tail jigs, and some hard baits like Cotten Cordells Redfins and Bomber Long A’s. Throwing any of these lures in the surf, inlets, or around bridges in the summer time will produce Snook.

Concentrate on the lunar feeding times when snook fishing as from my experience they seem to follow them accordingly. During the summer months snook feed aggressively at night and for those of you who are night owls this can produce some epic snook fishing. The larger snook seem to feed on larger baits and feed less often than smaller snook.

For tackle I like to use 30-50 lb braid with a 40-60 lb mono leader in structure and 20 lb braid with 20 lb fluro on the flats and mangroves. Snook have sharp gill plates that will cut light line and they have been known to run into structure and break your line. When handling large snook do not hold them by the lower jaw like a largemouth bass. The weight of the fish will detach the spine and kill the fish. Snook are a great sport fish to catch and tons of fun. With the FWC regulations there is an abundance of these giants and we hope this article will help you catch one.

Crappie fishing is utterly one of the most popular types of fishing done on the lake which is fun, productive, and every angler can attest to the excitement that follows every catch. Crappie fishing offers anglers of all skill levels the opportunity to enjoy fishing and often times catch enough fish for dinner. Every angler can do crappie fishing but those who know the nature, habit, and activities of the crappies have an edge and can enjoy a productive and less stressful fishing.

The crappie is related to the Sunfish and is found in freshwater bodies like the lakes, ponds, rivers and reservoirs in North America. The fascinating thing about the crappie is that it provides all year round fishing opportunities for anglers who love to eat what they catch. Also, anglers who fish for crappie often catch many crappies at one time because travel in schools and are never alone. The average lifespan of a crappie is about 12 years when in captivity and 10 years in the wild.

Crappie fish species come in two types. White crappie ( Pomoxis annularis) and the black crappie ( Pomoxis nigromaculatus). Both can have a variation in color due to their age and habitat. The white crappie and black crappie can grow up to 19 and 20 inches in length respectively while weighing up to five pounds. Crappie is a favorite game fish for anglers. They spend their day in deeper water and only move at dawn or dusk to feed. Although anglers can embark on crappie fishing and return productive all through the year. Spring appears to be the best time to fish and catch crappies because it is their spawning period. Northern anglers can find these fishes in large concentrations in shallow water bodies during spring because they do not go into hibernation during this time. Once you have located crappies, it is safe to say that crappie fishing requires less skill as compared to other forms of fishing that needs more skill and patience.

Small crappie jigs work best because of their wide variety, versatility and effectiveness. Jigs come in all shapes and sizes. The perfect weight of for crappie jig is about 1/16oz or 1/8oz. To use crappie jigs are correctly, slow in the winter due to the fishes low metabolism or faster in the spring with a pop, crappies can't resist them. Also, pink and white jigs tend to attract more crappies.
Sometimes you need bait to expand your productivity. Although you can catch crappies with just lures, sometimes you just can not beat live bait. Often times this yields better bites and larger fish. One thing to remember when fishing with live bait is the rig you are using is key. A crappie minnow rig should only consist of a hook, sinker and bobber. The hook size will ultimately depend on the size of the minnow/ Smaller minnows generally require hook sizes 6-2 and larger minnows get 1/0 to 2/0. Use an appropriate weight that will keep the bobber about 1/4 of the way above the water. The bobber is just to alert you if a fish is biting. Keep it simple and let the live bait catch the fish.

Vertical Jigging:

This is a useful technique that lets you catch more crappie. Only hang your rod over the boat side or bank of the lake and let the jig drop into the water while hanging below the rod tip. In the beginning you should let this sink to the bottom, reel slowly, let it bounce again and then sit. Do these repeatedly until you get a bite.

Cast and retrieve:

The cast and retrieve technique is perhaps the most dynamic method you can employ in crappie fishing. Cast jigs and crankbaits close to any structure, let it sink to the bottom, then reel slowly and expect a bite. Sunken trees or debris on the bottom often holds crappie. Target these areas over grass or mud bottom.

While crappie fishing is less stressful with the right crappie jigs, tricks and technique, it is also good to understand the effect of temperature changes on crappie fishing. At very low temperatures like 35 degrees, it is very hard to catch the crappie because the water is cold. Crappies go down to the bottom cover and rarely feed. As temperature rise above 50 degrees, crappies begin to become more active, and you can find them at various depths. At about 55 degrees, you will notice more bites because they begin to feed heavily before spawning. With increasing temperature the crappie hang outside the cover and fan out while waiting for the water to get warm. They do this before they get back to the beds. At very hot temperatures like 90 degrees, crappies move out of tributaries and can be found in the shallows on sunken trees or debris.

Crappie fishing is indeed a fun filled activity for both experienced and inexperienced anglers. You can make a great catch without stressing about knowing all the in's and out's of crappie fishing. There are a bunch of anglers who have caught large and unique crappies and you too can be the next in line. You can check the temperature trends and employ these tips to make your crappie fishing enjoyable and not one to forget.

In early 2007, the fisherman in Georgia, Florida and the Carolinas were extremely angry at a federal ban that was imposed on fishing for red snapper. In addition to that federal agencies also proposed to close a huge area to all fishing activities.

This federal program turned a handful of fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico into the lords of the sea, while thousands of other fishermen were left with limited rights to catch only a dozen fish. These lords of the sea were able to earn millions every year without even going fishing and transformed hundreds of other fishermen into modern-day serfs who had to first pay to the lords and get the right to harvest red snapper.

The federal program known as Individual Fishing Quota system, or IFQ, has unfairly concentrated the lion's share of the commercial red snapper harvest to a select few. What the National Marine Fisheries Service did was divide up the Gulf's snapper harvest like a pie, and gave away the largest pieces to the fishermen who landed the most fish in the years that preceded this program.

Through this federal program, a handful of red snapper fishermen received as large as 6% percent of the Gulf's total harvest, while hundreds of other fishermen received shares that were as small as a ten thousandth of a percent and this also limited their right to catch red snapper, bringing it down to a dozen fish a year.

Presently there are over 3 million saltwater fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico, and red snapper is the most popular and sought-after sport fish in the federal waters of the Gulf. Although the red snapper population in the Gulf is healthier than it has ever been in decades, federal fisheries managers have continued to reduce the recreational fishing seasons, which has resulted in a fishing season that spanned 9 days in 2016.

This has raised many eyebrows and catch limits have come into question. The Gulf red snapper fishery up to 3 or 9 miles off the coast are all managed by the state fish agency and the territory of state waters vary. Florida and Texas have jurisdiction out to 9 miles, whereas, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana control out to 3 miles. Up to 200 miles off the coast is officially managed by the federal government through its marine fisheries agency, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

These new rules also caused a major blow to coastal communities, especially those located around the Southeast, including St. Augustine, whose fishermen depend entirely on recreational fishing.

The handful of fishermen who are called the lords of the sea have earned roughly $60 million since 2007, even when their boats never left the port. This money is not something that they from their own labor, instead it was collected from the labor of hundreds of fishermen who had no choice but to give back more than half of the price that their catch had brought them.

THE BEST MAHI MAHI RECIPES ON THE PLANET

One of the best eating fish on the planet is the Mahi-Mahi (Coryphaena hippurus). This is one of the most prized sport fish that anglers are after for its luscious white meat. I am sure you have heard it by other name. Those include mahi, mahi-mahi, Dorado, dolphin, common dolphin or bull. It is known as the dolphin fish because often you will find it swimming next to your boat. I’m sure you are wondering where the name mahi mahi comes from? It is of Hawaiian origin and means “strong strong”.

Mahi Mahi has one of the fastest growth rates of all fish. This keeps the numbers of fish high. On average you will catch fish anywhere from 5lbs to 10lbs but every now and then you will catch a large bull mahi mahi that could be 70+ lbs. They are found throughout tropical waters and often found schooling under debris. They have a unique skin pattern that makes the one of the easiest recognizable and one of the prettiest fish to catch. The mahi mahi often have iridescent blue-green and gold patterns that are unique and used as camouflage in the open water.

The skin color is a good indicator of the freshness of meat. The brighter the colors are on a fillet often the fresher the meat is. When shopping for mahi mahi you will find it being sold in fillets or steaks. The meat of the mahi should be a pink to beige color. Any portions of the fillet or steaks that appear to be darker in color tend to have a stronger fish taste. We suggest to remove these areas and any skin before cooking or grilling.

The texture of cooked mahi is white and with large flakes. It is a pretty firm texture fish, which is why many people like to grill it. It is a rather lean fish that allows it to fit in anyone’s diet. I am such a huge fan of mahi mahi and absolutely love catching them! If you can get them fresh out of the ocean or buy it at the store we recommend you make this your next meal. I have compiled several of my favorite recipes for mahi mahi. You can find one of these on my table weekly.

One of our favorite and easiest recipes is the amazing mahi mahi Tacos. It is something easy to prepare for the average cook. Theses tacos will have your friends and family begging for more. Lets take sometime and go through the directions on how to make this wonderful dish.

                   CHECK OUT VIDEO HERE

First thing to do is to start by preparing the fish. If this is something fresh off the boat like we catch then you will have to fillet out the Mahi. After the Mahi Mahi is filleted proceed by cutting the fish into 1-ounce strips. You may want to weigh your first strip then eyeball the rest. Once you have completely stripped your fillets, it is time to bread them. We recommend you bread with flour, lightly beaten eggs with water and season it with bread crumbs. This can be achieved by covering the Mahi Mahi in flour, placing it in the eggs and covering with breadcrumbs. Now your fish is ready to deep fry. You can pre heat your oil to (375 degrees F). Place your mahi in the oil and leave until it has a light brown coating. Drain the Mahi on a paper towel and season with a pinch of salt.

Now that the fish is ready it is time to prepare the sauces. The pink chili mayonnaise is always a spicy favorite. Let the blender be your friend. Place your chipotles in the blender and blend away. Puree them until they are completely a smooth texture. Add your sour cream, mayonnaise, and adobe sauce and lemon juice. Place the blender on high. Once the texture of the sauce is creamy season it with a little salt and pepper and a pinch of chili powder for some added heat. Always refrigerate this until it is read to be eaten.

The mango-radish salsa is a little trickier to make. Peel your two mangos and dice it into small pieces. Cut up 4 to 5 red radishes and dice them into small pieces. Dice one small red onion as well. Add all these to a large mixing bowl and mix together. Add 1 tablespoon of chili powder, ½ bunch of chopped cilantro, ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil and some salt and pepper. Mix all this together and you are ready to serve. Squeeze your limes over this to give it that little bit of flavor that it needed.

The first thing you will want to do is make the ginger glaze. Mixing the soy sauce, honey, balsamic vinegar, garlic, ginger root and olive oil together in a bowl makes the glaze. Lay the fillets out and remove the skin from one of the sides. Cover lightly with salt and pepper. Place the fillets and glaze in gallon zip block back and place in the refrigerator for an hour to marinate.

After the fillets have been marinated heat some vegetable oil in a frying pan and place the fillets in it. Deep-fry the fillets until they are golden brown and flakey white.

The frying process usually takes 3-5 minutes on each side. They should only require one turn. After the fillets are finished pour the remaining marinade into the pan and heat until it reduces to a glaze consistency. Pour glaze onto fried fish and serve with your favorite rice and vegetables.

Stir in garlic, pepper and red chilionce it is a deep amber color. Remove from the heat then add the fish sauce and water. The glaze is completed and will be added to the fish when it is ready to be cooked.

De-skin the mahi and cut it into strips for cooking. Mix sesame oil and red curry powder together and toss the fish in it. The fish should be cooked in a skillet or on the grill. Our preference would be on the grill! The mahi mahi should take about 3-5 minutes on each side. After it is finished cooking drizzle your caramel sauce that you made earlier. This gives the mahi that excellent flavor that will have all your friends talking about it.

Now that the fish is made we need to create the spicy mayo that will top this dish off. Take your mayonnase and mix in some thai red curry paste. Once this has a good orangish tint it will be ready for bread placement. The last condiment that needs making is mayonnaise mustard. Mix some sirrachi into yellow mustard. Once all this is down the sandwiches will be constructed.

Take a fresh baguette roll and slice in half. Place your mayo on one side and the sriracha mustard on the other. Place your mahi mahi on the side with the mustard. Drizzle some more of your carmel sauce that you prepared earlier. Slice some jalapenos, cucumbers and onions. Place all these on with some spinich and fresh cut carrots. Top it off with a fried egg.

One thing that my girlfriend loves to make on a regular basis are sliders. Sliders fit well into our diet because it is small portioned and less filling then a huge burger. She likes to get creative every now and then by making veil sliders, lamb sliders and even shrimp sliders.

After a long day of work I came home to a new type of slider. This time she out did herself. She found this great recipe on the internet and it has become one of my favorite mahi mahi dishes to make and eat. If a coconut shrimp and a grouper sandwich had a baby, it would be the world famous Coconut crusted mahi mahi sliders.

These are relatively easy to make and take very little prepartion time. Get a large bowl and mix panko breadcrumbs and sweetned shredded coconut together. Cut the mahi into 2 ounce squares and soak it in the eggs. After its good and coated place it in the breadcrumb/coconut mix until the outside is completely coated. Place on a large baking sheet and place in the oven pre heated to 375F. Allow the fish to cook for about 20 minutes until they are golden brown and cooked throughout. While the fish is cooking mix the sirracha, garlic, cumin, lime juice, salt and mayo together. Slice your mango and avocado in small chunks for placement on burgers. Spread the lime mayo mix onto the slider buns. Coat both sides with mayo. Place the mahi mahi square and top with avocado and mango chunks.

People who engage in freshwater fishing stand the chance of seeing and perhaps catching the walleye because it is a freshwater fish belonging to the perch family. Taking a critical study on the lifestyle of the walleye, it is not hard to decipher some features it has. Do you know that the walleye can live up to 20 years? Do you know that the female walleye can lay as much as 600,000 eggs in a year? Sounds intriguing right? That is the walleye for you!

Now, considering all these features, you may want to know the tips and tricks that can make you a better angler and help you catch that trophy walleye. Walleye fishing is fun because the harder it becomes to catch a fish, the more fun the fishing activity becomes. The walleye likes not to be seen when eating. They eat in a dark because they have a very high visual acuity under low illumination levels, meaning they eat when the light passing through the water column is hampered. The walleye hangs out around underwater structures when the sun is out and feed almost throughout the day.

The nature of the walleye makes it relatively hard to fish. It is fun to do because there are several tricks and techniques that can be useful in catching the walleye. Understanding the walleye is the first step to knowing how to catch it, otherwise you will find yourself clueless about walleye fishing. When you follow the tips and techniques that are apt for walleye fishing, you could be a renowned angler.

Tips, Tricks, and Techniques for Catching the Walleye

Below are some helpful tips that will skyrocket as well as make your freshwater and walleye fishing expedition yield results.

Finding the Walleye:

Walleye can travel many miles to meet their needs, but despite this knowing where you can get them is always a secret of making a wonderful catch. It has always seemed that you spend much time locating where the walleye are than the time you use in catching them. The bigger the number of walleyes in a location, the higher your chances of catching them. Walleyes prefer to stay in waters with a temperature of about 22.7°C, and may not go down very deep during spring. During summer, the walleye tend to move deeper in water due to their light-sensitive eyes. To get the best of walleye fishing during this time, you have to fish deeper.

Using Loten Walleye Rig:

Are you looking to score big on your next walleye fishing expedition? Then you wouldn’t go wrong by using by using the loten walleye rig. This fantastic tool allows you to fish deep. The loten walleye rig makes it right to the bottom of the river making sure you do not miss those big walleyes that may be hiding deep under water. This all important rig is named after Greg Loten a renowned professional fishing guide in Ontario. Greg loten has a knack for catching monster walleyes in places not known to naturally harbour big walleyes.

The lotten rig combines features of a Joe and Lindy rig. This rig needs a floating jig head, a trailer hook on 2.5 inches of line, a worm, a small split-shot sinker, slide sinker and syringe. To deploy this rig, you will need to slide the slide sinker with your line then proceed to tie the floating jig. After this, take the jig and slide the worm into the hook. Furthermore, connect the trailer hook to the jig’s hook while allowing the trailer hook to dangle. However, endeavour not to stick the hook in the tail of the bait (worm). Proceed and inject air into the tail of the worm using the clean syringe while deploying your rig under water. Leave for some minutes and watch out for your incredible walleye catch.

Early Spring Techniques:

Another powerful technique to capture the walleye fish is to fish for them during the early spring. This is because, during early spring, walleyes tend to come very close to shore or camp around areas popularly known as wild rice bed or sand bar with a very sandy bottom. Similarly, walleyes would also be found around rocky points and weed areas. For those who are already used to scouting for walleyes, you would agree that location is crucial when fishing for this highly intelligent creatures. Also, walleyes tend to spawn around river current. However, you have to be careful when fishing for them during early spring. Walleyes become aggressive during this period and would hit just about any bait set in place to lure them.

Hence, if you are looking for a catch that would impress you during the day, endeavor to jig in the shallow water. To catch bigger walleyes, try to go a few feet deeper, but then stay in the same area.

I have been an avid waterfowl hunter since I was 15-years-old, mainly shooting Wood Ducks in Georgia swamps. The increased pressure over the last 10 years has ruined many of my favorite hunting holes over time. One species that I never get tired of seeing or hunting is the Canvasback Duck. Once hunted close to extinction because of its feathers and meat, this species has made an incredible comeback due to regulations and research.

There are several places throughout the United States where Canvasbacks winter in large numbers. A few of them are Chesapeake Bay, Lake Catahoula, Lake Seminole, Southern California, Coastal Louisiana, and Choke Canyon Reservoir. My first ever drake Canvasbacks came from Lake Seminole in South Georgia. This lake has large amounts of aquatic vegetation (mostly Hydrilla) that can feed large amounts of diver ducks including Canvasbacks. However, with increased hunting pressure these birds get pushed off the lake and become decoy shy rather quickly. Sometimes it takes different tactics to hunt them. One of the largest wintering grounds for Canvasbacks was Chesapeake Bay. Over the last decade biologists have seen the amount of aquatic vegetation decrease and thus the number of Canvasbacks that winter there has decreased also.

In the 2016-2017 season the majority of Canvasbacks in the Mississippi Flyway moved down to Southern Louisiana in mid to late December. A recent waterfowl survey posted that over 50,000 Canvasbacks were using Catahoula Lake and another 200,000 were using the bays along the Louisiana coast. On a recent trip to Catahoula Lake our group of 4 shot our limits of Canvasbacks every afternoon we hunted. We had around five thousand birds trying to get into our decoy spread one afternoon. It was one of the most epic Canvasback hunts I have ever been on. Catahoula Lake is a public lake with private blinds located throughout. I would suggest going with a guide in order to learn the lake. Birds avoid most of the blinds after they have been using the lake for multiple days along with facing direct shots. New birds will readily decoy into these blinds when they first reach the lake during migration. On a good migration this lake can hold Mallards, Pintail, Widgeon, Canvasbacks, Teal, Ringnecks, Gadwall, and even Snow and Specklebelly Geese. Hunters run most of the puddle ducks off the lake in a few days, but the divers will stick around.

The fiddle crab is one of the best baits to use for sheepshead, redfish, black drum, pompano and permit. Chances are you have seen these little guys crawling around the boat dock or pier. These small crabs get eaten all the time, yet we forget to think of them as good bait.

HOW TO FIND:

Finding thousands of fiddler crabs is a very easy thing to do. I always looked for saltwater marsh lands, beaches, mud banks, under piers, grass flats, rocks or any other structure that provides shelter during high tide and a feeding ground during low tide. Once you find a colony there will be to many crabs to count. The male fiddler crabs have an over sized claw. These are used for fighting, mating, and dancing. Yes, these little crabs love to tango! Once you have found the colony, now you have to catch them!

THE CATCH:

One of the most fun things I remember as a kid is going out and catching a bucket full of fiddler crabs. Their claws were too small to pinch you so it was always a challenge to see who could catch the most.. My dad made it a game for us, but all we were doing was catching him bait for his next huge redfish or monster sheepshead. The three different ways to catch fiddler crabs:

1) HOME INVASION:

How on earth could a home invasion result in me catching a fiddler crab has to be what your asking yourself? Well, these crabs are known to live in shallow dug out holes in the sand or mud near the coastal marsh lands. This makes them easy targets for being dug up. Yes this is a guaranteed way to catch a fiddler crab. When you see one of these little-side stepping ninja dart into its hole, dig about 5 inches down and you should bring up the little fiddler crab. This is an easy way of catching them but could take a while to catch a bucket full of bait.

Like a common childhood game of tag where one must run around and try to catch their friends, you also can run around and try to catch each fiddler crab. This is a very time consuming method that often leads to more frustration than a bucket full of bait.

This is probably my favorite and most effective way of catching these little crabs. I use one of the bowls that the soup comes in from the Chinese restaurant and can catch a whole days worth of bait and do very little work. Get out there at low tide and dig a hole to where you can put the bowl in and have the ground flush with the top. Put some squid in the bottom and leave it for a couple hours. When you return the crabs will have fallen in trying for the bait and will not be able to get out.

4) LAZY MAN TECHNIQUE:

The last way of getting these little crabs is by simply going to your local bait shop and buying them.

THE RIG

I use a very simple rig. It has been proven time after time great for catching sheepshead and redfish. I use:

· Penn Battle II gear ratio 5.3:1 with a max drag of 30lbs on a Blackfin Sandbar series rod.

· 2 oz eggshell weight by C & B Custom Jigs with a 1/0 Swivel.

· I add about 1 and ½ foot Vicious braided line to the other end of the swivel.

· I add a 3/0 Hunting and Fishing Depot Sheepshead Jig to ensure a catch every time.

Now that you know what equipment to use, the next question is how do you rig the fiddler crab? The best way to successfully get a fiddler crab to stay on a hook is by placing the hook between the rear legs or back corner of the shell. Be careful not to crack or cause traumatic damage to the little crab. You want it alive on your hook. You can always add the crab to the back of a jighead. This could give it the appearance of moving across the bottom.

Bringing it all Together

1. Toast 2 English muffins (4 halves)

4. Place poached egg on top of lobster

5. Top with Hollandaise Sauce

Tips: Keep in mind your poached egg will not look great if it’s your first time poaching an egg. Make sure you have 2 extra eggs to practice if you have never done it. At first mine would just breakup into 100 pieces and be a mess. If worst comes to worst, just fry your egg over easy and it will essentially give you the same effect…runny egg yolk mixing into your lobster.

Tips: What most people don’t realize is the best part of a lobster roll is the temperature difference between the warm buttered roll and the cold lobster inside the bun. I don’t like to add lemon directly to the lobster mix but I like to add it on the side because many people like a splash of lemon, plus it looks visually appealing.

Tips: Often times the lobster is just not enough food for a meal. Many people add grilled fish or grilled shrimp. If you already have the grill fired up, you can throw on some corn or asparagus as the side dishes and it also adds great color to the plate.

Rods and Reels:

We had 4 BLACKFIN RODS with Penn speed jigging reels rigged with 60 lb VICIOUS BRAID with a 50 lb mono leader. Captain informed us that we were not after small fish today. That was very obvious by are complete setup. We were after the BULLS.

As we approached the inlet the tide was just slacking off, we zig-zagged the boat across the edge of the channel from 20- 50 feet. Then the captain found them, the fish finder was lit up with arches hovering around a small bit of structure on the edge of the channel. The anchor was set in 20 feet of water allowing the boat to sit right on the edge of the channel so our baits would be down near the structure and edge of the channel. You could see the fish cruising along on the depth finder.

Every fall around the same time the Bull Reds come into spawn. This is a trophy anglers dream to be able to catch such an old fish. The Reds travel in from offshore and meet up to spawn. It is not uncommon to see large schools of fish pushing bait in the inlet or sound at this time. Any angler can go out and catch up to 10 large redfish a day. It is great for the family due to being such easy fishing.

The Strategy:

Before we could get the rods out the captain started breaking blue crabs and throwing them in the water.

“Why are you throwing our bait out?” I asked.

“Chumming” was his answer. The Redfish are very sensitive fish to smell and will follow the scent trail hundreds of yards to a bait. When rigging the crabs he pulled off the claws and legs, then broke off the points for scent. The mullet was cut into half fish sections. This allowed for a scent trail to the bait. The circle hook was placed into the leg joint of the crab. The lines were then dropped/ casted right onto the ledge of the channel.

Five minutes passed, out of the corner of my eye I see a rod tip bounce, as I go to pick it up the captain says not to touch the rod, “let him crush it.” Reds have a large tooth in the back of their throat they use to crunch blue crab shells. 20 seconds pass, 20 seconds, then a slow pull, “She’s on.”

The drag was tightened and the circle hook was allowed to work into its mouth. When using circle hooks it is very important not the set the hook. The fish started taking drag, huge pulls and thrashing. As I grabbed the rod I realized the power of this fish. It was very similar to fighting a grouper. After an intense 4-minute fight I see the fish. A huge redfish almost 4 feet long weighing almost 30 pounds surfaced next to the boat. The circle hook was right in his top lip.

The captain brings the fish onto the boat and we vent him. When fishing for Bull Reds or any large fish in deep water it is important to have a venting tool to release the air pressure in the swim bladder. Without venting the fish may not be able to swim down and will die. The fish was vented properly and released.

In 2 hours we landed 7 fish the largest being 45 inches long!

I knew I was going to be sore the next day. These massive fish put up an incredible fight. I feel blessed to be able to go out and catch these old breeder fish. Without conservation and protection these large breeder redfish would be rare and difficult to catch. However, in any inlet in any southern state these beautiful fish can be caught.

Conclusion:

Take your large rods, a venting tool and a few blue crabs and see if you can catch one. This is a great substitute for arm day in the gym. Great way to pass an afternoon and enjoy a few beers with friends! Email us your best redfish pictures to be featured on all social media. Please comment below or email us any questions you may have.
