'Women are into fashion, men are into style, style is forever'

Domenico Dolce

While the women's wardrobe has its classics - lasting styles often reinterpreted and frequently updated - there are arguably more of these in the men's wardrobe. In part this is because womenswear is more a product of fashion, which can be defined as frequent change for its own sake. Menswear, on the other hand, is also a product of fashion but this tends to be apparent only in the details, in a ponderous, evolutionary advancement rather than in sweeping statements. Men's styles are variations on a recognizable, well-known theme, rather than a new score altogether.

(...) these items have formed what might be called menswear's canon. They created the benchmarks for all subsequent versions of their kind. This in not to say they cannot be improved on; creative and inventive designers have made the most of the latest technologies to devise men's clothing and accessories that are, in some regard, superior to the originals - perhaps in ease of wear, lightness, durability, utility and sometimes quality, if rarely in terms of sheer style.

Josh Sims. Icons of Men's Style

Šķiet, ka vismaz pāris reizes nedēļā man mugurā ir tieši šada kombinācija.
___
If the sky is overcast, if it snows, if there's that half melted brown stuff on the streets and winter is here for real, that means I have to curl my hair and wear colors!
Tā, es esmu atpakaļ!
Divas lietas:
___
I'm back!
I just wanted to say few things:
First, it's so weird that colleges and friends are going south (to central Europe mountains) to ski, but we still haven't had our first real snow.
Second, I feel like a Nordic patriot wearing all these Scandinavian high street brands.

I have a short attention span. I’m like a matchstick.
It applies to everything. To my eating habits (I’m on and off vegetarian. At the moment I'm 'on'.). Education (it took all my stubbornness to get my BA and I’m still haven’t got my Master’s). Interests (I wish I’ve persisted on – dancing, playing piano, arts school, swimming, French, Japanese, writing, yoga). Religious believes. Friendships. Relationships. Aesthetic, sartorial inclinations. Sometimes it’s good when bad habits are concerned. Sometimes not so good when it applies to everything else.
There are only few things consistent in my life at the moment – my work (I’m with the company for 7 years now and I still can’t believe that!) and my living conditions (it’ll be soon 9 years I’m renting my current flat).
I feel I’m falling out of blogging. I’m still interested in reading blogs. In consuming imaginary or written stimuli. But I feel I’m not interested in posting myself anymore. I feel I have nothing new to say, nothing new to share. I run out of subjects. I run out of my wardrobe. OK, I’m not but by now you’ve seen my whole wardrobe and I’m not sure you’re interested in the second round. Maybe I’m wrong. It often feels that personal style blogs are all about new things, new purchases, new hunts. But what happens if you start a fast? What happens when you understand that your wardrobe is complete? When you know that there’s no need for another silk shirt or perfect trench coat because you already have them. Do I need to shop just for the sake of shopping? Or for the sake of blogging? Do I still need to participate in the rat race?
I won’t give you the answers. And I won’t stop posting. I just felt I owed you an explanation why there are fewer blog posts as of late. Why you get less and less comments on your blogs. I feel confused and lost. I feel I’ve run out of words. I feel I just want to stand by. Actually it’s how I feel about my life at the moment – I want to be by my sel. I may want the action but I don’t want to participate. My current feelings may or may not be affected by winter. But I have to be honest about this too – winter brings out the worst in me.

new year, new resolutions

1. Pierakstit pilnīgi visus pirkumus.
Pagājušo gad es nolēmu tērēt mazāk. Kā jūs domājat kā man veicās? Nekā! Tad, nu, es nolēmu, ka pilnīgi visu pirkumu piefiksēšana varētu palīdzētu man labāk pārraudzīt savus izdevumus. Un palīdzētu pārējo lēmumu realizēšanā.

Un ja man izdosies 1. punkts, iespējams man iekrāsies naudiņa arī kādam tālākam ceļojumam!

3. Būt vēl uzticīgākai Latvijas precei!
Ja iespējams ārzemju firmu produkcijas vietā izvēlēties mūsu pašu ražojumus - Munio sveces, Madaras, Pien SPA, Elier vai vecā, labā Dzintara kosmētiku.

source

Redzēsim kā man ies.
___
As every year this started with few resolutions. I tried to be as real as possible with my resolutions. Although I'm usually very practical about everything I do.

So, what do we have for this year?
1. To write down my every single purchase.
Last year I wanted to cut down my shopping habits. As you can guess I wasn't very good with that. So, I think writing down every single cent I've spent could help.
2. To travel.
I want to visit Budapest, Visby or any of the Mediterranean countries. And maybe if I'm very good with my first resolution I can go even farther!
3. To be even more loyal to Latvian products.
If there are locally produced alternatives for anything always choose Latvian. For example, Munio candles, Madara, Pien SPA, Elier or Dzintars cosmetics.
4. To grow up and adopt a puppy.
It's time to grow up and go from being auntie to my parents dogs to being a responsible adult myself! I'm considering dachshund, Jack Russell or wippet.

Will see how it goes. But usually if I've set my mind on something it happens!

toast with humus & sprouts

Reserved hat/ COS peacoat/ thrifted scarf, cashmere sweater/ Mango flares/ Ecco shoes

___
Hello on this side! How was your New Year's parties? What are your New Year's resolutions?
To be totally honest I couldn't wait for the new year and to be more precise for January 2. I wanted it all over and fast! I hate the stress about the year that has suddenly disappeared, about the resolutions that must be made, about parties that need to be attended. Maybe I'm weird but I prefer personal or spontaneous celebrations not global holidays.
But, of course, there were many good things about these holidays - possibility to spend more time with my family and friends, more leisure time, I'm so happy about friend's second son who was born on December 24, to go totally crazy in anticipation about the puppy we'll have in our extended family in 2 weeks (if you follow me on twitter you already know that!), about all the presents, about the perfect Austra's concert just before amazing New Year's fireworks, about all the smiley, happy people on the crazy city streets in the first minutes of the New Year and about the possibility to wear my weekend uniform almost all the time. The uniform consists of COS peacoat (the best buy from my recent visit to Hamburg a month ago), cashmere/ merino wool/ cable knit sweater, flares/ skinnies, my leather Converse or similar shoes. I couldn't be happier!

cūkas šnukurs

this year in no particular order via my phone

___
Time is so relative. It can be linear, it can be spiral, it can even be cycle! You can express it in numbers, in feelings or like in this project - in colors. But one thing is clear - this year has come to the end. And this has been an amazing year! I hope you feel the same! And I wish next year would be even better, even more creative, even more joyful and colorful!

pelēkie zirņi ar speķi

2009./2010. gada ziema / Winter of 2009/2010, Jūrmala

Christmas must be white! For the last few years we've had loads of snow for Christmas, this year all you need to shovel the snow is a scraper. But still when I woke up this morning and saw that everything is white I finally felt like Christmas. I hope you have found your Christmas spirit too!
I wanted to thank you for reading my blog, for all the comments, for inspiration and ideas you give me!
___
I'll generalize - all northerners (from the 55th northern parallel up) want to live in open, lights spaces with large windows. And, yes, advisably there should be a balcony or terrace too. OK, at least it's my dream! There's no place for Spanish or Greek architecture with those small, hatch like windows. We want to enjoy light with gusto! In summer we want our rooms to welcome and absorb as much light and sun as possible and it doesn't matter that it's light outside even when we sleep as we've adjusted to that. In winter we want to lure the light in and then trap it.

___
Every year in the end of November or beginning of December I buy next year's planner. I've tried to use Winnie-The-Pooh planner with quotes from the book and with all the characters on every page of the planner. But I guess it was too cute and too impractical for me. I've tried to use corporate daily planner with my name embossed on the cover but it was too stiff for me, besides planner was too large and heavy for carrying around. So, this year as for the last couple of years I bought Molesikne weekly planner. It's compact, small and very handy. This year I got their limited edition Peanut planner. Perfect!
But as my birthday falls in the planner buying period of the year I occasionally get planners as gifts too. So this year I got Whimiscal Agnesiga planner and Taschen Simple Diary Second Edition as gifts from my dear friends.
Agnese Kleina planner is handy planner filled with interviews with Latvian designers and lots and lots of cuteness.
But it helps to make our daily life seem more interesting. I have their first edition but haven't filled everything in yet. Sometimes it's actually more interesting just to read it and ask yourself all the weird - philosophical questions.

So, where you'll be writing down your next year's plans, doctor appointments, meetings, engagements and dreams?

curry

Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré man ir jaunums, esmu to izmēģinājusi tikai pāris reizes, bet varu teikt, ka patīk.
Serge Lutens Tubereuse Criminelle.
Dr. Wolff's Acne Attack. Augļskābes, pienskābes savu laik man vislabāk palīdzēja tikt galā ar pumpām, tad, nu, no tā laika manā arsenālā ir saglabājies šis līdzeklis. Iznīcina pumpas & jebkuras to paliekas. Vēl man reizēm patīk uz sejas uzziest visparastāko bezgaršu jogurtu - vislabākais pienskābju skaistumkopšanas līdzeklis!
Bioderma Hydrabio maska. The best ever!

___
I'm getting obsessed not only about cozying up my home but also about skin care during winter. Actually, I'm obsessed about that all the time but it gets a lot worse in winter. Winter also is usually the time I'm starting to look for my signature scent. I found one 2 winters ago but now it's discontinued! How awful is that?!? But let's not dwell on bad things, let's talk about my favorite skin care products and recent aqcuisitions.
It turns out I'm not alone with the weirdest skin out there, there are at least two of us! My skin is so unbelievably dry that it's oily! Does it makes sense? Actually it does. But the first time my facialist suggested that I thought she's crazy! I was in shock for a moment as for 29 years I was convinced I have problematic and on good days combined skin. But it turns out my skin is dry as desert! It sucks in every drop of moisture as a vacuum cleaner! So, now I moisture like crazy! I use any tools - creams, masks, thermal water. Just give it to me!
So, now about my miracle products.
Bioderma H2O. I love it! I use it as a make up remover, as a cleanser and as a toner. It does everything! It's absolutely miracle water.
Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré is my newest acquisition, for now I've used it just a few times but I love it already. It's very gentle and very moisturizing. Winter will show if it's really as goos as people claim it to be. Will see!
Serge Lutens Tubereuse Criminelle. My newest signature perfume. Opening is almost disgusting - it smells like detergent, like medicine, like hospital equipment. But dry down is the best ever - tuberose, jasmine, hyacinth. Absolute perfection. I feel very feminine wearing it.
Dr. Wolff's Acne Attack. During those long years when I was fighting my acne my best buddies were AHA and lactic acid products. I've kept this cream for emergency situations - it gets rid of pimples and scaring like an eraser. Magic! BTW, sometimes I also use yogurt masks (just take the plainest yogurt you can find) as it's the lactic acid in it's purest form.
Bioderma Hydrabio Mask. The best ever! I suggest to do as it's said in the instruction and use it daily in the beginning, you'll see the difference! It's amazing!
Nuxe Nirvanesque eye cream. There's a life long fight with my under eye circles. I know it's genetics but I still hope there's the one product out there that would erase those stupid circles FOREVER and with the first try. Sometimes I'm naive, I know. This Nuxe cream isn't magic wand but it moistures, brightens and relaxes eye area perfectly.
That's it for now.

menu

Rīt ir mana dzimšanas diena & es atļāvos nedaudz pasapņot par to, ko es gribētu saņemt dāvanās. Polli collar. I've ordered custom made collar from a friend but while she hasn't finished it yet, this would do the job too.
Taschen guide books. They're so beautiful & so handy! Mmm... and so cute!
___
I had 2 choices with this dress - either to give it away or wear it as it sat in my wardrobe without wear for much too long. I chose latter. Because it's not so often you can find things in this perfect shade of eggplant & I really love draping on the dress. The lack of sun & light really affects how I dress, I've gone to the dark side. But on the other hand when else could I wear all my black, navy and brown clothes? In summer? No way!

stuffed peppers

Mango coat/ Cubus shirt/ thrifted cashmere sweater/ Killah jeans/ booties from Antwerp
___
For those who know me the title of this post sounds weird as they know that I don't eat bell peppers. But, hey, I can sacrifice for the blog! Besides pants look so like red bell peppers, don't they? Actually there are a lot more stuff I don't eat. Do you want a list? OK, here it is - I don't eat meat, fish (but that's natural as I'm vegetarian again for 6 months now, I sometimes cheat with seafood though), bell peppers, sweet corn you get in jars, strawberries, honey, aubergines (with very, very, very few exceptions), if I can I avoid squash and zucchini (of course, it depends how they're prepared). I sometimes wander how on earth do I get proper meals, but I guess I somehow manage.

Parisian Chic. A Style Guide by Ines de la Fressange. Aci jau iemetu un padomus palasījos. Bet galvenais šis būs ļoti labs ceļvedis nākamajam Parīzes braucienam.

Just Kids. Patti Smith. Šo grāmatu gribēju nopirkt jau sen atpakaļ, bet kkā nesanāca. Tagad nevaru sagaidīt kad to varēšu izlasīt!

The Philosophy of Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol. Un kāpēc gan ne? Varētu taču būt interesanti.

Great House. Nicole Krauss. Man ļoti patika viņas iepriekšējā grāmata - The History of Love, tāpēc vienkārši nevarēju paiet garām.

Everything Is Illuminated. Jonathan Safran Foer. Es šo grāmatu jau esmu izslasījusi, bet tā ir viena no tām grāmatām, kuras man gribēsies izlasīt atkal & tā kā izlasītā grāmata nebija manējā, tad vajadzēja iegādāt. Un filma arī bija laba.

Middlesex. Jeffrey Eugenides. Šī grāmata man bija elektroniskā formātā, bet kkā nelasījās, varbūt šis palīdzēs.

Un kādi ir jūsu ieziemošanās paradumi?

Sveicu visus Latvijas 93. dzimšanas dienā! Sarkanbaltsarkanas bučas!
___
I think I'm starting to prepare for hibernation - I'm obsessed with cozying up my flat, and I'm buying candles and books. If pimping up my home, and making everything even more comfy is an annual phenomenon then buying books in bulks is something new!

Unknown fact about me - in my childhood I spent a lot of time with my parents and grandma in their respective work places. So, I grew up between library (where my mom worked), botanical garden (where my dad worked) & Faculty of Biology of the University of Latvia (where my grandparents worked). So, I guess that has left mark of a kind. Or not. But the thing is - I can't imagine my life without books and reading.

So, what do we have here? What I'll be reading this winter? Also as you can see all books are in English as with few exceptions I prefer to read in English.

Parisian Chic. A Style Guide by Ines de la Fressange. I actually already read through it. I'm not sure if I learned something but I know for sure it'll be very useful for my next trip to Paris to use it as guidebook.

Just Kids. Patti Smith. I have wanted to read this book for a very long time now but somehow didn't manage to pick it up. Now I can't wait to read it!

The Philosophy of Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol. Why not? Could be interesting!

Great House. Nicole Krauss. I loved The History of Love very much, so, I just couldn't pass this book.

Everything Is Illuminated. Jonathan Safran Foer. I actually have read this book already but copy wasn't mine, but as this is one of the books I plan to reread someday I needed to have a copy of mine. Film was good too.

Middlesex. Jeffrey Eugenides. I have an electronic version of this book but somehow I couldn't read it. Maybe this helps.
I heard on the news that it's forecasted snow today, I'm not very excited about that to tell you the truth. Lately the most popular topic is weather we'll have another very cold and snowy winter or not. Judging from the fact that wild boars and people don't accumulate fat (don't laugh it's true!) it seems this winter will be the mild one.
___
One of the few reasons I like late fall and winter is the possibility, no, scratch that, the need to wear coats. Coat is our protective layer against the cold but it also protects us from outer intrusion in our personal layers. Coat is like an onionskin that protects inner more colorful layers and the heart of the onion. Coat usually is also the most expensive from all the clothes we own not only because it needs to be made from higher quality, thicker, more enduring materials, have to be better cut but also because for at least 4 months our coat is our business card. So, the process of choosing and buying a coat can be very complicated. I'd even compare buying a coat to buying a car. You just can't do that on a whim! For me coat also symbolizes peace - look at those pure, clean lines, to that simplicity and elegance. It's harmony embodied in the garment.

P.S. Sveicu visus Lāčplēša dienā! Patriotisms all the way!
They just need to be disguised as classic, black pencil skirts and nobody will raise an eyebrow.

the little things that count

Helmut Lang camel coat (thrifted)/ J.Crew sweater (thrifted)/ thrifted shirt, skirt/ Wolford tights/ Zara boots
Perfectly cut camel coat. Matching shades of green in sweater, shirt and skirt. Peak of silk skirt below the thick camel coat. These are the little things that combined together make a perfect outfit. Like in a choir where individualities dissolve and forme something bigger and more beautiful.

pretty tighs

Wolford, Falke, Calzedonia tights, Sockbox socks

___
One of the easiest way how to spice up any outfit, how to make it more interesting and how to add some print is by wearing interesting tights. But the problem is that I'm very conservative in the tight department as I'm either black, opaque tights or bare legs kind of girl. OK, it's not as bad but it's close - I wear only dark colors, except cobalt blue tights I love to death. I'm very peculiar and reserved concerning lace or fishnet. And definitely no leggings. I hate leggings! So, what choices do we have? I'd say pretty decent judging from the collage. My favorite pair, of course, is Calzedonia tights with that perfect leopard flowing into polka dots print. Actually, it's my tight dream come true!
