Gruppé entitled Landscape and Marine Painting in Oil and Acrylic. The class, designed for beginning to advanced students, is scheduled for March 23-25, 2012, in the Museum Academy classrooms overlooking Big Spring International Park.

Students will create a new “controlled” impressionistic-styled painting each day during the three-day workshop. Gruppé will provide demonstrations and one-on-one instruction using his special methods of the palette knife and brush and a rapid wet-into-wet approach using tonal color. His grandfather Charles Paul Gruppé (1860-1940) studied and painted in Europe until moving to Rochester, New York. His uncles, sculptor Karl Gruppé (1893-1982) and painter Emile Gruppé (1896-1978), were successful and widely recognized for their work.

Charles Gruppé studied at Yale and Columbia Universities as well as the National University of Mexico. He was commissioned by Yale Divinity School, American President Lines, and Fort Lauderdale National Bank of Florida, just to name a few. Art News from Randy Wells:

I have always had a passion for art. While still in high school, however, I decided to pursue a career in science and continue my art on the side. My formal education includes a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Physics from Point Loma Nazarene University and a Master of Science Degree in Physics from Old Dominion University.

Although my career has grown as a scientist/engineer, I have managed to improve in fine art painting over the years through practice, pouring over hundreds of works by other artists, and studying art books and magazines. I have been part of fine art galleries in Alabama and exhibited in juried art shows in Florida and Alabama. My acrylic paintings have won awards and have appeared in hotels, art museums, magazine covers, corporate lobbies, and homes throughout the country. My work is exhibited continually at the Huntsville Art League Gallery and on my website at http://www.randywellsart.artspan.com/.

I am looking forward to my Limelight solo exhibit at the Huntsville Art League for February in which I will include two new series of paintings: one of Williamsburg, Virginia and the other of Sonoma Valley, California—two places that have special meaning to me and my wife, Cindy. Some of these painting are shown here. The Limelight reception will be held at the Huntsville Art League Gallery at 6:30 pm on Friday, February 3.

The Alabama Clay Conference and Art Folk Gallery in Birmingham, Alabama are excited to announce the formation of the first annual ALABAMA CLAY MARKET, a week-long pottery and sculpture sale, offering the work of some of the state's best ceramic artists. The Clay Market is the first event of the 27th annual ALCC, and opens with a reception on Thursday evening, February 16. The market continues through Saturday, February 25th.

Held at Art Folk Gallery at the Young & Vann Building at 1731 First Avenue North, and in conjunction with the 2012 Alabama Clay Conference (ALCC 27), the Market will bring together the work of approximately 30 Alabama ceramic artists, with styles ranging from folk to modern. Not to be confused with traditional street fairs or craft shows comprised of booths and elaborate displays, this is a frills-free market set-up with artist wares displayed on tables. Modeled after the original 50 Georgia Potters exhibit (a widely popular and very successful venture) the Alabama Clay Market seeks to bring the work of well-known Alabama potters and ceramic artists together and offer the public a wide-variety of choices and prices.

Exhibiting artists in the Market include Larry Allen, Margaret Barber, Dianne Benefield, Scott Bennett, Nada Boner, Susan Bowman, Ryan Carlson, Paveen Chunhaswasdikul, Becky Crisswell, Susan Freeman, Chris Greenman, Lynetter Hesser, Kevin Irwin, Kerry Kennedy, Janice Kluge, Steve Loucks, Jane Marshall, Bertice McPherson, Branan Mercer, Fran Nagy, Tena Payne, Guadalupe Robinson, David Self, Randy Shoults, Adam Snyder, Adam Sterrett, Ursula Vann, Marylin Wilson, and Tony Wright.

Moulton, Alabama – The Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival calls all artists to submit pieces for a juried art exhibition on the theme of roosters. Sponsored by Dr. Don Beach and hosted by the Lawrence County Arts Council, “Rooster Call” is held in conjunction with the eighth annual Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival set for April 13-15, 2012 in Moulton.

The jury panel will select one Best of Show artist, a second place, and a third place. The Best of Show recipient wins a $500 cash prize, a listing in the Rooster Hall of Fame, and the opportunity for the work to be featured in future promotions. Second place and third place will be awarded $300 and $200, respectively. The winning submission will be determined by creative vision, innovation, potential to engage an audience, and overall impression. All artistic mediums will be accepted, and along with roosters, artwork on the theme of hens, chicks and eggs are encouraged.

All artwork submitted will be on exhibit for public viewing at Art Inspirations of the Valley located at 552 Lawrence Street in Moulton from March 1 to April 30, 2012 and will be presented at the Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival on April 13-15, 2012.

“Programs such as the Rooster Call exhibit provide an outlet for bringing established and emerging artists into our community for citizens, regardless of age or background, to experience something a little different,” said Dr. Beach. “Arts and cultural activities play a vital role in communities by enhancing the quality of life for citizens while bringing in visitors who contribute to the local economy, and for this reason, I find it important to support local art and cultural programs and am proud to be a part of the Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival. Whether you have a deep appreciation for art or just simply curious as to the many different ways a rooster can be portrayed artistically, Rooster Call allows people of all ages to experience art in a fun manner.”

The exhibition is open to all emerging and established artists 18 years of age or older residing in the United States. All entries shall be original work produced by the artist within the past two years and may be marketed for sale at prices determined by the artist. The Lawrence County Arts Council will retain a 30% commission fee on any sale of art from the exhibition.

The jurors are Nancy Rhodes Harper and Rickie Higgins. Surrounded by paint and brushes in her father’s sign shop in a small town in the Ozark Mountains, Harper started painting at a very early age. She received a BA degree in Art Education from the University of Central Arkansas and worked in sign painting and as an interior designer while freelancing as an artist. She has studied with many of the finest artists in the world today, Quang Ho, Kim English, Ken Auster, Nancy Chaboun, Karin Jurick, Carol Marine, Anne Blair Brown, Elio Camacho, and The Cumberland Society Painters, and her work is collected in many states across America. She was the first artist named to the Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival’s Rooster Hall of Fame as the winner of 2011 Rooster Call Juried Show. She and her husband reside in Huntsville, Ala.

Creativity, imagination, and passion are present in Higgins’ expansive portfolio. Pieces come together as he is guided to new opportunities through both imagery and medium to create spaces that are skewed vertically yet visibly believable. He paints in his home studio in Decatur, Ala. and his most recent awards include 2011 Panoply Poster Artist, People’s Choice and 3rd place Judge’s Choice in the 2011 Rooster Call Juried Show, 2010 Double Decker Juried Show Best in Show, and Honorable Mention in the 2010 Carnegie Embracing Art Exhibit.

I would like to make you aware of an important Alabama’s arts community meeting in January. This meeting can have a specific impact on the Alabama Alliance for Arts Education’s future funding.

Al Head, executive director of the Alabama State Council on the Arts (ASCA), has asked all ASCA grantees, past, present, and future, to gather on Wednesday, January 11, 1-3 p.m. at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival (Octagon Theater) for a strategy briefing related to the upcoming Legislative Session and arts advocacy in our home districts. If you have ever attended an Alliance workshop or event you benefit from ASCA grants in many ways throughout the year.

Al will cover the importance of communicating with your local legislators about the value of the arts to Alabama’s economy. While arts for arts’ sake and arts education have been mainstays of our “elevator speeches,” it is time to refocus the pitch around the jobs created and sustained by the arts and the economic impact of cultural tourism in Alabama. You will receive specific information about arts advocacy tools at the meeting.

Al refers to Jan. 11 as a “gathering of the troops.” With that in mind, I am personally asking you to attend or send a representative. We hope every Alabama arts entity will play a role in this significant advocacy effort for FY 13. Your local action is vitally important.

Our sincerest thanks,
