Last Friday evening, Cheryl and I attended a Sheryl Crow concert at Musikfest on the South Side of Bethlehem just to the side of the blast furnaces at the old Bethlehem Steel plant.

Although it’s not necessarily my favorite genre of music, I thought the concert was quite good. This in particular because with free tickets and free parking, the only money spent was for two bottled waters. ;) The seats could have been a little more comfortable, but the weather was very nice, if not just a tick on the humid side. Considering up until a few hours before the concert was to begin they were calling for severe thunderstorms, no complaints in that regard. Something you don’t always see or expect at a concert, the show started almost exactly at 8:30PM as scheduled.

As I mentioned in my post last week, I’m slowly working on ‘gutting’ the site and trimming all the fat from the edges. I have made some progress even though you probably haven’t noticed much outside of a couple of new slideshow images. I’ve been working on the About pages as well as adding a new Guns, Firearms & the Second Amendment section to my site. I’d also like to update a few of the Guides I have posted and perhaps get back to writing some more ‘how-to’ articles in the future. I’ve been lacking lately with my photography motivation as other interests had pushed it to a side a bit this summer. I have been somewhat busy with retouching and post processing for some clients, but getting out and actually taking pictures has been missing and I really do intend to get back into it soon. As I’ve got involved in shooting guns over the last year or so, I’ve met some people who have mentioned wanting to have some nice photos of their firearms. I’ve been thinking about building some custom mounts and settings to do that as well, although It has gotten as far as the ‘ideas’ tab in Remember The Milk and not quite to the ‘To-Do’ list with a due date. With an interest in both photography and firearms, I suppose I’ll have to be a bit more careful of just using the term ‘shooting’ by itself or it could be interpreted incorrectly.

I’ll try and post some ‘real’ content in the near future. Perhaps a short review of the Sheryl Crow concert we’re going to at Musikfest this Friday evening.

My original intent for Hustedia.com and the other sites took a back seat to other opportunities that materialized at the time. I have now decided to vastly reduce the scope of my plans and this site will serve solely as my personal hub for my blog and other interests. Although it won’t be what I had originally planned, at least now it will once again have a central purpose.

Stay tuned…

I just wanted to give a brief ‘review’ of my experience with the new Google+ service that was launched within the last 48 hours. I apologize to those of you who haven’t been able to gain access yet, but I assure you things will improve very quickly as there are numerous ways people are discovering to invite people into the service.

The whole purpose behind Google+ is to improve the experience of ‘sharing’ information. Or at least, to improve it in the ways in which Google believes it is now dysfunctional. To me, it seems like a much more organized and ‘clean’ Facebook – without the mass of people.

For my taste, I like it. Although I am an admitted Google “Fan Boy”, I really had low expectations of whatever ‘social’ product Google was rumored to be working on. They haven’t exactly been setting the world on fire with their recent new product and service releases, Hello Wave and Buzz! However, I’m pleasantly surprised at how well Google is tying all your information together. Most people do not even realize all the services available to them on Google, such as Google Profiles, or don’t see the need to utilize them because they are already on Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, etc. I’ve always liked the different options Google offered, but it was extremely difficult to navigate the landscape to discover and organize your information in one need place. iGoogle wasn’t really the platform for that and the dashboard felt entirely too utilitarian. Profiles did begin to pull stuff together in some ways, and appears to be one of the first steps which has led to the Google+ service.

Let me briefly explain a few of the key components of Google+:

Circles – “Browse your circles to see what all the different people in your life are sharing with you.” Circles is basically ‘groups’, where you can add people into your specific circle such as friends, acquaintances, or family. There is also a ‘following’ circle which allows you to follow people who might be interesting to you, but are not part of the circles you want to share your information with. You can also create your own custom circle and call it whatever you like. (Watch the video here)

Hangouts – “Start a hangoutanytime, from anywhere. Up to ten people can stop in and chat.” It’s pretty self explanatory, but it’s a group chat function that allows you to chat in real time video. (Watch the video here)

Sparks – “Use Sparks to get a constant feed of stuff you’re really into, and share it with friends.” (Watch the video here)

Streams – Streams is very much like your News Feed in Facebook. You can have it show everything coming through from all sources, or you can filter it to just show certain circles such as just Friends, or just Family. The “Incoming” stream shows posts that were shared with you by people who aren’t in your circles.

What Google+ is really doing is bringing everything together from as many sources as possible while providing that information in the most organized and relevant to you way. It’s not an easy task to accomplish, and it’s way to early to say if Google is getting this right or not. However, for me personally, I really am enjoying the experience as I like the interface and the organization methods.

‘But wait, there’s more’. Picasa, Google’s image sharing service, is now offering more options thanks to Google+. All users of Picasa, whether they are using Google+ or not, can upload to their accounts with less orry about going over their storage limits. To quote from a Lifehacker article:

A new photo-tagging feature lets your Google+ friends tag your public photos.While Picasa Web Albums offers 1GB of free storage for photos and videos, files under certain size limits won’t count towards this free storage limit. If you’re a Google+ user, photos up to 2048 x 2048 pixels and videos up to 15 minutes won’t eat up your storage space. For non-Google+ users, the photo size limit is smaller: 800 x 800 pixels (videos are also under 15 minutes).

If you reach your storage limit and upload images larger than these dimensions to Picasa Web Albums, however, Google will automatically resize them for you so they won’t count towards your free storage limit—so it’s like getting unlimited storage after all.

I talk a great deal (too much, some would say) about the link economy as the essential architecture of media on the net. Now we are launching an ambitious research project at CUNY’s Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism to bring facts and modeling to the discussion. The goals:

•	to learn how to optimize the value of links—on both sides of a click;
•	to explore a framework to enable content- and audience-creators to negotiate a mutually advantageous exchange of value—that is, a content marketplace appropriate for the net;
•	to investigate alternative methods of content distribution and value exchange—asking whether it’s best for readers to come to content or whether there are alternative ways for content to travel to readers; and
•	to investigate the link’s impact on the economics of the larger news ecosystem—e.g., how it can make news more efficient (this is where I say, “Do what you do best and link to the rest”).

To begin the discussion and the research, here is my treatise on the link economy. We’ll take this to media companies, aggregators, and others asking for data on their links and we’ll then use this to recruit researchers to analyze that data, test assumptions, and make recommendations.

The hypothesis

There are two creations of value in media online: the creation of content and the creation of a public—an audience*—for that content. Online, content with no links to it has no value because it has no audience. It gains value as it gains links. Thus something of worth is created on each side of a click.

That’s the start of the treatise; the entire text is below.

The treatise continues to list questions about each side of the click, from the perspective of the link creator and the link recipient. Then it looks at an alternative view: rather than making readers travel to content via links, content (with branding, ads and revenue, analytics, and links attached) travels to readers. That leads to much larger questions about where the value in media really resides today: in the content or in the relationships and information about them that media create.

I’m eager to get your feedback and ideas about how to pursue this. If you have data about how various kinds of links perform, we’ll be eager to work together. If you are an analyst researcher who can help, please step forward. I’ll continue to keep you informed on this work……
