Recently we delivered another off grid Hot tub and Sauna Shepherd's hut.

The lights are run off of a 12v battery charged with a solar panel, while both the hot tub and the sauna are heated by wood fires.

The roof also incorporates a glass panel above the hot tub.

The Shepherd's hut is sat on a recently landscaped area which will look wonderful once the ground cover has regrown.

Customer Built Decking May - 2021

Below is one of out 16ft x 7ft "River Severn" Shepherd Huts next to purpose built decking that the customer installed.

The Shepherds hut has a double opening door, 4 opening windows, beds at each end and a wood burning stove. Lights and USB- Double Sockets are all on 230v mains.

The main Paint colour is Cuprinol Garden Shades Willow

We think they did made a great area around the Shepherds Hut.

February's update:

more pieces of Sapele were added to the sides of the boat to build up what will become the finished gunwale.

Things have a habit of being put inside the boat when there is 'nowhere else' for them,

Then the decks are fitted with a piece of marine plywood which will form part of the finished deck.

Strips of cedar will be added to this to make this stronger and add to the finished shape of the boat.

January

All of the ribs were fitted end of November and into December. Then the ribs were cut back to accommodate added strengthening pieces (the inwales) and then the outwales were added too. These and the top piece that is yet to be fitted make up the gunwales.

Then the decks start to take shape and we are fast approaching the stage where we really need to pick what will power it.

The boat was turned over sometime between July and November. A lot of things were done and few photos were taken,

before being trimmed to the final shape.

Epoxy and fiberglass matting was used on the inside after a lot of sanding. the edges were trimmed to get the right shape where required and then strips of Sapele were made.

Then we have November:

Ribs of Sapele being fitted.

The ribs are left to rest before being glued and fixed in.

The other side will done the same way before the next stage of fitting out. Eventually we have to decide what will power the launch as this changes how the later stage of the fit out goes.

Railway Carriage Delivery

The Railway carriage based hut is ready for delivery.

We had to wait for the ground around where the carriage was going to be prepared and then for it to dry out.

Bluebell the shepherd's hut: now fully finished

Lavender and Lovage have sent us several pictures of the current look inside and outside Their hut Bluebell.

We think they have finished it off beautifully and have added some extra pieces that make more use of the space and theme.

The shutters have been done in Cream

The inside is finished, and the Railway Carriage is ready to be loaded for a socially distanced delivery.

We will be loading this one up in the next day or so and then delivering it to its final view.

An August Site Build - Bluebell The Shepherds hut

Earlier this month we were hosted by Lavender and Lovage while building their Shepherd's Hut: Bluebell in their garden.

What follows is mostly photos of the various stages of the build.

Day zero:

A loaded, ready to go trailer with a rolling chassis, the roof sheets and the first layer of cedar painted ready in 'sweet blueberry'.

Day one on site:

In the background you can see the low carport which is the main reason that this Shepherd's hut needed to be constructed on site.

This is around the middle of day one, the rolling chassis was brought through to the garden, then the walls were put up, roof trusses set and once then corners were set with the first couple of boards. We are ready to put on the roof sheets while also putting up the first layer of cedar boards.

The windows are in at this point, door frame is ready and the stable door was then fitted before the end of day 1. The idea is to get the Shepherd's hut watertight as soon as possible.

Day two on site:

The second layer of boards went up during our second day on site. The window trims, and other details are also being fitted. As you can see the last of the pre painted boards ran out, and we were dodging the wet and windy weather so painting had to be halted.

Inside was mostly clad by the end of play on day 2. The engineered wood floor is almost finished. First fix wiring was also in.

Looking like a Shepherd's hut now. Still some trim and lots of finishing off inside to do.

Day Three:

Day three was busy. So busy that we're pretty sure we forgot to take pictures. These are two that we were sent from our host: Lavender and Lovage

Day Four on site:
a couple of days later we returned to finish off.

Shutters were added.

The kitchenette was put in.

it has a small on demand water heater, and is fed from the mains water outside.

A small drawer for utensils, and an oak draining board /flip/ chopping board

The bed is in a small alcove and is hinged so that access underneath is easy if required. It can also be lifted up at the back to use as a sofa once the mattresses are in.

A small alcove around the bed area, shelves, decorative hearts and all of the electrics are done.

It is now up to Lavender and Lovage to paint the inside of Bluebell exactly how they want and add their own finishing touches.

A quick visit to replace a glass pane

The shepherd's hut that we were building in situ this year was just down the road from a hut we delivered several years ago.

They got in touch while we were down there and asked if we could replace a broken pane of glass and fit a couple of extra shelves. Which are great reasons to go and see a past hut.

The custom built welsh dresser doesn't look any different from the day it was delivered.

The Shepherd's hut is mostly used as a weekend getaway for a family member who works in London during the week.

Last week we did our final day onsite for this Shepherd's hut. Despite the lock down and its effects on our supplies, the customer and ourselves are happy with the end result.

we find it best to deliver our Shepherd's huts whole when we can. It means that we are not on-site for very long and our customers can enjoy their hut in peace sooner. However when we do need to build onsite we strive to deliver the same quality of finish.

After several sanding and filling sessions to get the shape of the boat right it was time to undercoat the boat. which lead to some more sanding and filling and undercoat before the boat was ready for painting.

Sky blue was the colour of choice.

A roller made for a cleaner finish.

The next major stage will be to turn the boat over and tidy up the edges by trimming the fibreglass cloth and then begins fitting out.

A few days ago we took out the Mini Boat to float it.

Quite a simple plan, put a person in it, if it doesn't sink and they can paddle it about then everything is good.

So on a late but still sunny evening we floated the boat. A boat that we still haven't named.

We were able to steer it, keep it reasonably straight when paddling, and didn't fall in.

These are all great things when paddling a boat.

After getting used to paddling it, and before it went dark on us, we tried a small electric outboard.

The battery helped as ballast for the front.

The next plans are:

to try and get it to sail with a simple rig.
to make another version of this kit with the changes we made as we went along
to build the other kit we have cut out in the meantime
to finish the other boat that has been a long project.

Railway Carriage inside painting

The partition wall is in, separating an area off for a walk in cupboard which will be fitted with shelves.

We've also put in most of the light fittings and switches. There are still wall lights to fit.

We are playing with the idea to put a sliding door on the partition wall as this should suit the space and the theme better.

The upper parts of the walls and ceiling, all of the Tongue and Grooving, has been painted in Cream, the lower sections of the walls have been scumbled.

The white space is approximately where a multi-fuel stove will be going.

Window in the cupboard area, still to be framed out.

The space in the corner will be fitted out with a kitchenette and then a bench-bed (couchette) will be under the nearest window on the left.

Getting close to the flooring stage, we try to avoid this while still painting as the floor comes pre-lacquered and thus pretty much ready to go.

More detailing and panelling has been added to the outside of the Railway Carriage.

It seems that the ends are staying cream,

A second layer of relief has been added to the wooden strips. We've also put bolts into the runner to add more detail.

We are waiting on more materials to be able to get on with the outside now. A decorative connecting door will be added to the other end we think.

We've also confirmed on the paint that will be going on the inside so we will be able to get onto that next week.

Once the internal walls are painted the rest of the fitting out will speed along, if we have no more delays due to material shortages anyway.

Mini Boat 11th post

The seat is in.

It still needs a couple of coats of varnish.

We think it is set to the right height, but until it is in the water who knows?

Next is to make the oar locks, a set of oars and to start thinking about a sail...

Progress is being made.

The sides are mid Brunswick Green, and for now the ends are cream.

The reddish wood will have at least another coat and will not be as orange.

We are now waiting on more paint. Another issue that we are coming across again and again due to the social distancing rules and other measures is that many places are not able to produce as much, and those able to supply it are selling out quickly.

Everyone needs paint. And when the colour bought doesn't match expectation it can get quite frustrating. It will be a simple fix once the wood stain arrives though.

Yet to panel out the other side.

Stared to line out the inside. the Plywood lower sections will be done in scumble. The rest of the wood is yet to be decided upon.

Mini Boat - tenth post.

The floors and other pieces are now in.

Still playing with the idea of being able to sail this boat.

Much of the woodwork has now had several coats.

With the weather still on our side we have had a chance to get the undercoat on the railway hut.

it is looking huge again.

The railway wagon will be finished in green and detailed in cream.

Building in situ part 2

This time we have pictures on site.

This is how we left the outside on the first day. The hut was watertight, first layer of cedar on.
Doors and windows fitted.

This is mostly how the inside was left after the first day. The first fix of the wiring was done on the second day.

The end window and second layer of the cedar now fitted. The hut is coming together now.
There would be more done if we were staying in the area, however we cannot at this time.

The outside is mostly done. There are a couple of pieces to tidy up on the outside and the inside is ready to be lined out.

We think there will be one more day on site.

Mini boat - Ninth Post

The mini boat is coming along nicely.

After faring the hull, it is now ready for the undercoat primer

We are planning to pick out some of the Sapele afterwards.

Then after leaving the undercoat to dry for more than a day we are ready for the first coat of green.

The first coat is done and is now being left to harden,

Blue/grey undercoat and the top coat of white.

The inside finished with the sapele ready for a protective coat.

The seats and floors are all cut, waiting to go in after the painting is all done.

Building Shepherds huts in situ.

We always prefer to deliver the shepherd's huts complete, however this is not always possible.

Sometimes when there isn't access to the proposed site for a customers Shepherd's hut we have to build our own kit for construction on site.

In this case we access what we think are the best sized pieces for getting through to the site and try to have the sections as complete as possible.

We have a dry build at part of the shepherd's hut, allowing us to hang the doors and windows, which then need to be removed leaving just the frames and the screw holes ready for an easier fit on site.

It will usually take us 2 to 3 days when we have to build on site if we have good weather conditions. However it can take longer depending on what is required inside of the hut.

We failed to take pictures during the actual build on site of the first day of this hut, we were too busy getting it done.

More trellis projects

We have done two further trellis projects in the last couple of weeks,

The first is shown just below, and included toppers and curved ends to show where the gate was and to break up the shape of the walls.

The second was was more of the same style we installed in a previous post, for the back garden of that same house which is in the pictures below.

The railway carriage roof

After planking the roof of the railway carriage with cedar strips we had to leave it a couple of days to allow the wood settle.

We then spread out the EPDM sheet over the roof and let it sit for a day so to help remove many of the folds and creases.

We are lucky that the weather has been so good these past few days. The heat first helped remove a lot of the creases in the rubber sheet.

However, we had to make sure that when it came down to the gluing process we did this in the morning or evening when the roof would be cooler,
as the glue that is used can set too fast if it is too warm.

With relative ease, and the help of a soft brush, we first stuck one half of the sheet down, and then the other and then left it a couple of days under cover to fully go off.

Folding and then trapping the sheet down the sides of the barge boards helps seal the roof and prevents water from finding a way in.

The next stages are to fit a facia that will trap the roof sheet and then decorate the ends of the carriage.

The walls are ready for the primer when it gets here and the inside is ready for wiring before we line out the walls.

This is one of the projects that we have been managing to get along with while observing both social distancing and lock down rules.
