Comments: “Michelin” is a French tire company based in Clermont-Ferrand. The Michelin Man, “Bibendum” was created by Marius Rossillon (O’Galop) in 1898 and has changed in morphology over the years from the original jolly, chubby man wearing glasses to the much slimmer version of today, who has also given up smoking his cigars!

The white figure is screwed on the black base and marked “Made in the USA”.

She rose to fame during the silent film era, her most famous role was opposite “John Gilbert” in the film “The Merry Widow” in 1925 directed by “Erich von Stroheim”.

The image on this beautiful tin is signed by the artist “Henry Clive” (1882-1960) and shows her dressed as Santa Claus. This “Canco” tin is one of the more unusual versions.

Comments: “Uhlan” comes from the Tartar for “brave warrior”, they were originally Polish light cavalry officers, however they later served in the Austrian and Prussian armies. They typically wore a square topped hat; “czapka”, and a double breasted jacket; “kurta”, with a coloured panel at the front. The British equivalent would have been the lancers.
This ceramic piece in the form of a saluting soldier guarding a basket, was designed to hold non safety matches which would have been ignited by striking on the rough sides of the figure.

Comments: This box of commemorative soaps was produced in 1937 for the coronation of “King George VI” by “Joshua Margerison & Co. Ltd”. The soaps were produced in the form of an oversized coin with a milled edge in grey, ivory and rose colours. The front has an embossed image of the King and Queen in profile and states “H.M. King George VI and H.M. Queen Elizabeth” around the circumference. The back has a crown above a shield like device that incorporates the date 1937, a Tudor Rose, two thistles and some shamrock, below which it says “Joshua Margerison & Co. Ltd Preston”. The box is in excellent condition except the gold label has a little discolouration. The soaps are in very good condition, unbroken with just a little chipping on edges.
An unusual collectible that has survived unused and intact for over 70 years, which is even more surprising when you consider that for six years during “WWII” soap was in short supply as it was rationed!

Comments: “Hakoah Wein” was a Jewish sports club based in Vienna prior to WWII. It was best known for their football team and it produced several Olympic athletes. It was founded by two Austrian Zionists “Fritz Löhrner” and “Ignaz Körner” in 1909, following the doctrine of “Muscular Judaism” proposed by “Max Nordau”. “Hakoah” comes from the Hebrew for “the strength”. Following the anschluss in Austria the club was closed down by the Nazis in 1938.
I purchased this rare medal in Vienna just before the “Hakoah” sports club complex was formally re-opened on the 11th March 2008 in Vienna, seventy years since it was confiscated by the Nazis!

Comments: This large pin was produced for the “Panama Pacific International Exposition” by “Walter N. Brunt” of Mission Street, San Francisco in 1915.
This Californian world’s fair was designed to celebrate the building of the Panama Canal and it was built on a 635 acre site along the northern shore, between Van Ness and the Presidio. It opened on the 20th February 1915 and closed on the 4th December 1915. The “Tower of Jewels” was the 435 feet tall centrepiece and it was decorated with over 100,000 Novagems; small cut glass coloured gems, which sparkled during the day and were floodlit at night.
The very successful exposition allowed the city to show how well it had recovered since the devastating 1906 earthquake and fire.
Because of the nature of the image this may have been produced for the closing day of the fair?
