Egregiously Overdue Shop Update

We touched down in El-A back in August, and now that we're reasonably settled in (i.e., have discovered where to get spicy thai noodles and stiff Highball cocktails), we figured it was time to start refreshing ye olde nostalgia shoppe. Look out for some soopa secret snaps of the new casa in the coming weeks, too; it's not a gloriously drafty Victorian like we had in Oakland, but it fits all of our books (and, really, what more does one need from a home?).

We haven't been to a Wet Seal since 1990 (the last year, incidentally, that our mother insisted on accompanying us to the mall for our back-to-school wardrobe), so imagine our surprise when we visited WS's virtual storefront upon reading about the infamous spelling gaffe and discovered that the proto-H&M of our youth is now virtually indistinguishable from every major stripper supply boutique on the web. No biggie, really, 'cept that Wet Seal has a 'Homecoming' section that suggests its core demographic is more familiar with babysitters clubs than their gentleman's variant. To prove our point, we've juxtaposed a Wet Seal item with a common (and generally more expensive) stripper costume. See if you can tell the difference! (answers below)

So this is precisely what it looks like: A car with a record player mounted under the dash. They were popular options in the 1950s when clear channel radio stations were still limited and when commuting from your nascent suburban community into the city for work was still new and exciting. The Philips version pictured above-bottom seems to work a bit like a CD player in that it sucks the disc in, but most of the devices required drivers to actually drop the needle on the record. Since we can hardly be trusted to keep control of our cocktail while flipping the record (much less positioning the needle), this seems like a particularly bad idea.

Proto Cindy Sherman

Those of you from the City of Big Shoulders are likely already very familiar with Outsider Artist Lee Godie's unique oeuvre, but we just recently came across it, and had to share. While the resonances with Cindy Sherman are quite pronounced, Godie's technique was worlds away from that of Sherman. Lacking both a camera and a home, the itinerant artist relied throughout the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s on a photo booth at a Chicago Greyhound bus station to make her absurdist self-portraits, and frequently worked upon their surface with ink pens to apply color and other flourishes. And unlike Sherman, whose youth and privilege can be read on the conventionally attractive body that she distorts for many of her portraits, Godie's especially sun-damaged skin bespeaks a certain mystery that no amount of postmodern play or dime-store makeup can negate.

What wonderful stories one can tell with some pocket change.

Feeling Spotty

Recently, a Mark Twain biographer dubbed the noted 19th century humorist "the world's first blogger." According to Robert Hirst, Twain's autobiographical technique was not unlike that of contemporary bloggers, who, Hirst notes, tend to eschew chronology in favor of informal, meandering recollection. Like a fish without a bicycle, Twain was 'a blogger without a web.' Perhaps the same can be said, then, of the women pictured above. Just a bunch of proto fashion bloggers without a cable modem or a scrap of Modcloth. Sounds kinda dreamy, right?

Dear Pop Divas: The Future Called, and It’s Not Gonna Be As Sexy As You Think

We were discussing with some friends the other night whether the 1970s would ever truly make a comeback in the same way that the 1960s, or even the 1990s, have. While the midi skirt will probably never enjoy a proper renaissance, it is clear that one vestige of the decade--Afrofuturism--has made something of a return thanks in large part to hip hop divas like Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and Beyonce's so-called alter ego Sasha Fierce.

Equal parts science-fiction, psychedelic style, and extraterrestrial attitude, Afrofuturism was a politically-inflected movement that explored the past and the future of people of color through art, music, poetry and literature by the likes of George Clinton, Sun Ra and Octavia Butler. More recently, musicians like Kool Keith, Outkast and even Kanye have dabbled in its remnants, as has P. Diddy-bankrolled gender-bender Janelle Monáe (whose album The Archandroid summons the movement in both form and substance).

But Afrofuturism's 21st century resurgence has been most prominently led by pop music's fairer sex, and the revival leaves much to be desired--mostly in the form of politics, sincerity and depth. This is not to say that we are not down with Rihanna's riff on Mad Max, or that Nicki Minja’s rainbow-dipped wig doesn’t have a certain amount of charm. It’s just that, back in the day, Afrofuturism was too freaky, too funked up, and far too far out to ever pass as pop. In dreaming up inter-planetary revelry, the movement's innovators (like its contemporary imitators) had a taste for utopian fantasy, irreverence and play, but their romanticism was never entirely divorced from the harsh realities of the real world, or the fucked up dystopia that it could ultimately fund. Today's future perfect divas don't seem all that interested in exploring whether the future will be just, only that it will be sexy (and that they will be 'the only women in it,' as Rihanna's thoroughly paranoid version suggests). But with large populations of birds inexplicably falling dead from the sky, a perpetual war in the Middle East, and the after-image of 40,000 tons of oil spilling into our rising oceans, we have to wonder just how sexy the future will truly be?
