The University I attended had an entire floor dedicated to their business department. I remember every time the elevator stopped on the floor I would watch the people getting on and off the elevator thinking about how smart they must be. These would be the CEOs of these large businesses, making tons of money, living the life. At the time I had no inclination that one day I would be a business owner and even so many years ago had the ability to be one of those ‘business elite’. I obtained my social work degree and began working for agency after agency, acquiring certifications, licenses and experience until one day, the circumstances were just right and I began working independently. How hard could it be? I had the knowledge and the client base; I just needed to find a place to hang my hat. That worked for a while. I had little overhead aside from rent and knew how to keep client records. If you asked me how much money I made during that time though, I would have to answer with some vague reply. My business cards? I had a box of 500 that thankfully had my name spelled correctly but did not convey what business I was in and had little more than my phone number on them. As my client base phased out of counseling I realized I had done nothing to secure more clients and since the building my office was in was being sold, I decided to leave the private world and head back into the public world. Thankfully, this move allowed me to connect and eventually collaborate with Hybrid Small Biz. The world of business became less frightening and much more exciting. Exciting? Exactly. Working to create a website that is not only functional and aesthetically pleasing, word dialogue to entice the reader, and develop strong business and financial supports for a small business owner feel like redemption. Business can still be intimidating, but with the right support it has every opportunity to be extremely successful. ~sara How did you get into business?
