Film director Spike Lee and actress Jada Pinkett Smith have said they will not attend next month's Oscars ceremony because of the mostly white nominees.

Among those overlooked were the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton for best picture and Will Smith for best actor in NFL film Concussion.His wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, said in a video message on Facebook that "begging for acknowledgement, or even asking, diminishes dignity and diminishes power."

Twitter network down for many users after technical fault

Social network Twitter went offline for many users on Tuesday, with web visitors being greeted by an error page.

Some mobile users were also unable to read or post tweets to the network, which has more than 300 million active members.Twitter chose to communicate the problem via a tweet, in which the firm said it was aware of the problem.

Some users took to Facebook to complain.

A spokesman for Twitter said that a tweet from the company's @support account read: "Some users are currently experiencing problems accessing Twitter. We are aware of the issue and are working towards a resolution."

When we interact with computers today, we type into keyboards or press on screens. But the earliest programmers in the 1800s had to use much more rudimentary methods to control their “calculating machines”.

At the time, the British inventor Charles Babbage turned to a technology used in the textile industry – punched cards – to inspire his ground-breaking design for an “analytical engine”.In the video above, Tilly Blyth of the Science Museum in London explains exactly how the cards would have worked.

The corruption scandal plaguing athletics is worse than the one faced by football, says four-time Olympic gold medallist Michael Johnson.

Three senior IAAF officials were banned for life for alleged doping breaches.

And Russia is currently banned from all athletics competitions following accusations of widespread doping.

Asked how the scandal facing athletics compared to that of Fifa, Johnson told the BBC: "If you think about the victims, it is absolutely worse."Fifa, the body that governs world football, is also in crisis following a series of damaging corruption claims.

Its president, Sepp Blatter, has been banned for eight years for breaching ethics rules.

In an interview with Mishal Husain, Johnson said that those athletes cheated out of medals by dopers "never had the opportunity to stand on the podium - and they should have".

However, he stopped short of backing an Olympic ban for Russian athletes later this year.

"Do you ban an entire country that ostensibly could include clean athletes, from participating in Rio?" asked the American, who still holds the world and Olympic records for the 400m.

Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale has suffered his third calf muscle injury of the season.

Bale, 26, limped off shortly before half-time during Real's 5-1 La Liga win at home to Sporting Gijon on Sunday.

The Wales international, who has scored 13 goals in Spain this season, is reportedly set to be out for three weeks. "He has been diagnosed with a soleus (calf) muscle injury in his right leg," Real said on their website.

"His recovery will continue to be assessed."

Reports in Spain suggest Real are hoping to have Bale back for the last-16 Champions League tie against Roma on 17 February.

Bale has missed eight games over two separate spells this season because of calf injuries.

He was criticised in the Spanish media after suffering a recurrence of the original while playing for Wales against Andorra in October.

Since returning to fitness at the beginning of November, he has scored 11 goals in as many games for Real.

Former England defender Ashley Cole has agreed terms with Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy after leaving Roma.

Cole, 35, is free to join former England team-mate Steven Gerrard after his contract with the Italian club was terminated by mutual consent. The ex-Chelsea and Arsenal left-back joined the Serie A side in July 2014 and made 16 appearances.

Capped 107 times, Cole has won three Premier Leagues, seven FA Cups, one Champions League and one Europa League.

Roma sacked manager Rudi Garcia on 13 January after a poor run of just one win since the beginning of November.

Roboticists in Germany have taught a drone how to land itself on a moving automobile.

The researchers from the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) have demonstrated their aircraft safely landing on a car fitted with a net travelling at up to 75 km/h (47mph).

They suggest the technology could be adapted to let unmanned aircraft be built without wheels to let them stay airborne for longer periods of time.

Fortunately, sexism isn't an issue I've encountered within athletics. I'm aware that female sportspeople are sometimes objectified but I think the same thing happens to men - who hasn't swooned over Roger Federer or Anthony Joshua? (Sorry, Anthony!).

I'd rather earn respect and admiration for my physical achievements than my looks. When I'm training and competing, I am far more concerned with my performance than whether I might look stereotypically feminine or otherwise.

I think commitment, skill and ability are some of the most attractive traits in a partner. A guy is more likely to win me over with intelligent conversation and perfect grammar than with overstated confidence and good looks.

Priyanka Chopra’s international series, Quantico will return after a mid-season break of three months. It will start airing from March 6. The pretty actress herself had posted this news on her Instagram profile. Quantico had ended on the point where Alex Parrish, Priyanka Chopra’s character, thinks she find the man who trapped her in the bomb conspiracy, in Elias Harper, her attorney and also her batchmate from Quantico. However, he reveals he had been pressurised to so by some unknown person, and before they could make him reveal who was it, he commits suicide. Moments later, another bomb detonates at their FBI head quarters. On this interesting note, the show took and break.

Now that it will return on March 6, we will finally have the answers to who was trying to trap Alex, and the real motives in doing so? And how much can you trust each of her batchmates, when everyone has something shady to hide about their past.

After Theri, Vijay kicks off the shoot for his 60th film!

Ilayathalapathy Vijay is all set to make 2016 a memorable year for him. The actor has been super busy shooting for his upcoming film Theri and posted pics on Twitter every other day. And it looks like he won’t be stopping anytime soon. The Theri team had just wrapped up the shoot for the film on 17 January in Leh-Ladakh. After a grueling 7 month shoot came to an end, everyone expected the mass hero to take some time off. But the Ilayathalapathy had other plans. In an amazing display of dedication and professionalism, Vijay has begun shooting for his next film in Chennai just a day after wrapping up Theri. There were unconfirmed reports that the star will be working with director SJ Suryah next. However, he has currently started working with director Bharathan, with whom he has already done Azhagiya Tamil Magan. The film kicked off with a low profile pooja ceremony in Chennai. The director Bharathan and music director Santosh Narayanan were present at the pooja. Other than the Ilayathalapathy, the rest of the cast is yet to be finalized. Vijaya productions will be producing this as of yet untitled film.

Looks like Vijay fans will have a lot to look forward to this year as their favorite star is lining up film after film. Stay tuned for more updates on this new project.
