We're packed to the gills with activities today at the Art Center. Come down to make a Valentine's Day treat, or create your own Mandala. Make some paper flowers from recycled materials with the artists of G.E.E.E. Hang out for our exhibition openings and find out more about Someone Else's Dream, The Tree that is all trees, or our resident squirrels.

A glimpse into the life of an Art Center and all we do here in Hyde Park. Second Sunday goes until 4pm and the exhibition openings run 3pm-5pm. Get on down here already!

The Memory of Me Workshop

Our Youth Art Board and students from other area high schools got the great opportunity to work with artist Bibiana Suarez and learn more about her exhibition Memoria (Memory). Bibiana led the students through a conversation about her work and ways of developing symbols and identity. She also talked with the group about the notion of gameplay aesthetics, how she incorporates the idea of gameplaying in her artwork and how it contributes to the broader dialogue her images explore.

Afterwards we created our own sets of memory cards, using found images, popular culture icons, and of course our own imaginations! A fantastic day overall. Thanks to all our participants and of course, Bibiana!

Wanna make a Trade?

G.E.E.E. is growing! If you've stopped by their post-retail trading outpost on our second floor you've seen the amazing work and maybe you've even participated in the project and come away with some yummy tomatoes. Well, now they've set up a second post in our Front entryway. This site is a strict trading post, with no cash being accepted. However you are welcome to bring objects (maybe that tacky sweater you're looking to regift?) and trade them for other items of similar value. Swing on down to the Art Center and make a trade!

Classes Begin!

First day of classes are today, but it's never too late to register. We'll be working to fill classes all throughout the week and look forward to a new term getting off the ground for 2012. Check out the full listing of classes here.

Make that resolution to get out and take a class in something new a reality!

New Year's Resolutions

What's that? You say the new year hasn't started yet? Well, why wait to start your resolutions? Beginning now and carrying into 2012, we'll be posting at least one new blog a week to keep folks apprised of the Art Center's activities and opportunities, as well as just generally interesting stuff going on in the Chicago Art scene.

We start, or rather end off 2011 with a note about some cool opportunities available for teens here at the Art Center.

The Youth Art Board is our on-site teen group that participate in Art Center public programming, provides a teen voice for the Art Center's projects, and curates an annual exhibition in the space. Members get a $50 monthly honorarium for attending meetings and participating, and have the opportunity to even take classes at the Art Center. The I Heart Art program is a great chance to develop as an individual artist and create your own project, utilizing art center resources and studios. IHA participants get a $50 supply budget to make their projects happen, and get to work with a professional practicing artist to make their project a reality. Apply for the program here.
