The St. Pete Times is reporting that Rollin’ Oats Market of St. Petersburg have bought Tampa’s Nature’s Harvest Natural Foods Market. Nature’s Harvest had declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The name will be changed to Rollin’ Oats. Sounds like a horse feed store, but maybe the quality and service will be better. I guess it couldn’t be worse. Nature’s Harvest used to be the only place in town for natural and organic groceries, but as soon as there was competition they went downhill:

From a peak of $6-million in annual business, Nature’s Harvest took a big hit with the arrival of Fresh Market and what’s now a Whole Foods Natural Market within 2 miles. Sales slumped to $3-million in 2007.

I used to shop there quite a bit, but after a while I got tired of bringing a package of fruit or vegetables home before finding out it had mold. Or watching 3 employees standing around while customers were waiting to check out. Or making a special trip just to find out half of the things that you needed were not available.

It’s sad to see a local business fail, but customer service is a necessity. Hopefully this new venture will be more successful.

I should have mentioned this place a long time ago, but I happened to see someone mention it on the web and it reminded me of it. It’s Pinky’s Cafe (3203 W Bay to Bay Blvd) which took over the space of Been There Cafe.

The owner is a chef formerly at Soho Sushi (which moved from Howard Ave. to Kennedy Blvd) and Ceviche. I have only been there for breakfast, but I have heard that people really like their sandwiches. My favorite is the Ultimate Egg Sandwich. It’s a colossal stack of thick toast, runny egg (just right), lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise. The place gets crowded on weekend mornings, so you might want to get there early (or later) than the usual breakfast hour.

The Gasparilla International Film Festival is having a screening of the film Misconceptions on Friday, September 26 at Eckerd College. The event takes place in the Miller Auditorium at 7 p.m. A discussion with Producer/Director Ron Satlof will take place after.

The screening is free. Some information about the film:

The film was shot in and around Pinellas County by Oscar and Emmy- nominated Producer/Director Ron Satlof, a Pinellas resident.

The story centers on a religiously conservative, married southern woman who receives a message from God instructing her to act as a surrogate mother and carry a child for two married gay men who live in Boston - a Jewish doctor and and African-American dance choreographer. All “Hell” breaks loose when the African-American man comes to her home in the deep south to micro-manage her pregnancy, and he won’t leave.

Said director Satlof: “Regardless of where you are on the issue of gay marriage or religion in public life, this story has something for everybody.”

It’s important for a community to preserve its buildings and structures but equally important is remembering the people who helped make the place a neighborhood. One of these people to whom the community owes a debt recently died. She was Jane Liggett, who moved to South Tampa in 1976 to renovate her house.

It wasn’t that long ago when you could walk through Hyde Park and still see dilapidated houses that made you wonder if they were still inhabited. Luckily, many of these homes were brought back from the brink by people who valued the past and could see the potential in the crumbling bones.

My neighbor Marie moved to Hyde Park in 1967 after her husband retired from the military. She loved traditional neighborhoods and wanted to live in a place that had sidewalks and bungalows. Her realtor though she was crazy, but took her to Hyde Park where she has lived ever since. If you really want to get to know Hyde Park sit down with someone like Marie and you will see the neighborhood come alive. She knows all about the residents who have come and gone, the big events and the constantly changing built environment.

With every passing generation it is inevitable that some history will vanish, but it’s important to save what we can. There are treasure troves of memories and experiences that will disappear without an effort to preserve them. It would be nice to have a program to collect the oral histories of our senior residents in Tampa.

It’s a tiny place - probably less than 1,00 square feet - but they have plenty of outdoor seating. And a deck. We’ve been going there for a few years after softball because it’s open late, has reasonable prices, and is conveniently located right off of Howard Avenue. I happened to notice on their specials board that on Wednesdays they have $1 slices and $1 beers. That’s a nice deal.
