Some Very Knotty Designs!

2016-09-08T00:04:00.002-03:00

Hi Everyone,

I had these images saved for a post on rope designs this summer - however, since summer slipped by so fast, I'm squeezing them in now - some of them were just too creative to ignore!

Amazing what one can come up with using rope and adding a few knots!

Enjoy!

Hay Fever - The Weekend Home of Jeffrey Bilhuber

2016-09-05T21:04:00.003-03:00

I just love it when I come upon an interior designer's own home. And this is the case with this 1668, 3 storey, 30 room residence in Locust Valley, NY. The first cornerstone for the house was laid just 40 years after the British bought Manhattan from the Native Americans. That's a lot of history!

Named after the previous owners, the Hay family, it is now the weekend home of Jeffrey Bilhuber and his young son, Christoph.

Full of antiques, art, heirlooms, gorgeous fabrics, wallpapers and good old fashioned personality, it's a delight to peek into each room.

Enjoy!

Entrance hall with antique map and lamps.

One of the home's six fireplaces.

Quadrille's re-issue of historical wallpaper, Climbing Hydrangea, first seen in Gone With the Wind!

Hallway bar cart.

Living room walls in Benjamin Moore's 'Chic Lime'

Notice the native art prints above sofa.

Jeffrey loves his antlers which add to the history of the home.

More antlers and native rug.

Porch dining room with pink cast iron chairs.

Painted pine floors in upstairs hallway.

Jeffrey's master bedroom.

Ladies' guest room.

What a cosy nook for 8 year old Christoph.

Child size wicker sofa in Christoph's room.

And what a fun spot for Christoph and friends in the attic!

Pink Persuasion

2016-09-04T22:11:00.000-03:00

Hi Everyone!

I hope you've had some time to enjoy the end of summer, as I have.

Our granddaughter went home this past week and the house certainly seems quiet since she left........we had a wonderful time with her, but August flew by far too quickly.

The home I'm featuring today is in this month's issue of House Beautiful.......which is still on the shelves as far as I know.....it is here anyway, if you still want to pick up a copy.

I was thrilled to find another beautiful home with pink interiors. The lady of this 19th century townhouse loves the color pink, but as the owner of a local art gallery, previously believed she needed more neutral colors (mostly black, white and gray) to complement the art in her home.

Until, that is, interior designer Suellen Gregory stepped in. Noticing the homeowner's penchant for pink in her clothing and accessories, Suellen urged her to try it out.

And so began a total makeover the whole family loves! And why wouldn't they?

Good morning everyone.......

Just wanted to let you know that I've decided to take a couple of weeks off to spend with our granddaughter while she's here.

Summer is winding down and she'll be back at home soon and back to the school grind.

Hope you all enjoy the dog days of summer! See you soon!

Kay

Blue Calico by Burleigh

2016-08-14T22:34:00.002-03:00

Good morning everyone!

Hope you've all had a restful weekend and are ready for the week ahead.

We had a busy weekend and enjoyed the downpour of rain, which was very badly needed here. We had just enough to make everything green and gorgeous looking again, as our lawns were beginning to look a bit pale.

I think I have run out of moodboards for now. I hope you enjoyed them as much as I enjoyed the research and putting them together. They may come back another time, but for now I'm on to other things.

I found this article in the current issue of Victoria magazine last week about these lovely blue calico ceramic dishes that are produced by Burleigh in England.

Burleigh is the last pottery plant in England that still employs the 200 year old skill of applying the pattern by rubbing patterned tissue paper onto the bisque, firing it and then adding glaze and firing it again, which ensures the pattern will never fade or wear off......click here to see how the process takes place. I found it really interesting and it's worth the peek.

I am embarrassed to admit I had never heard of blue calico, Burleigh, or this process before last week and I have to tell you, I am completely smitten with it all.

This calico print is also available in red and pink!!

You must check out Burleigh's website and look at all the other colors and patterns including a blue chintz that looks pretty special, too.

And don't forget to check out Victoria magazine here. I always find something gorgeous and interesting in this magazine.....

Enjoy and have a fabulous day!

Loving the Art of Allison Cosmos

2016-08-09T22:49:00.002-03:00

Hi Everyone!

Hope you're all having a great week so far.

We are beginning to feel a touch of autumn weather, believe it or not! Our weather really only warmed up in July and already we are winding down for the cooler temps. Also, I was out doing errands today and Thanksgiving decor is on display at Homesense and the summer items are all gone! It's only August!

In late June I featured a home decorated by Summer Thornton (here). In describing the chinoiserie panels as seen below, I referred to them as framed wallpaper.

A few days ago, I received a lovely note from the artist, Allison Cosmos, letting me know that they were actually handpainted canvases.

I was more than happy to have this brought to my attention and I updated that post with the correct information and the link to Allison's site.

Naturally, I went directly to Allison's site to look at more of her art and discovered she had also provided some of the artwork for Megan Winter's home, which I featured yesterday.

So, I wanted to share her versatile work with you and she generously shares how she came up with the chinoiserie triptych shown below.

Remember this beautiful foyer?

The finished canvases are 100" high with the middle canvas 36" wide

and the two narrower panels are 18" wide.

A close up detail she used as a sample for the designer and

homeowner. She used matte acrylic paint on the 12" x 16" canvas to reflect

the look of wallpaper.

A closer look at the crane. Allison was inspired by the artwork

of John James Audubon.

And the same for this shorebird which appears in the triptych,

also inspired by John James Audubon.

Her detail is exquisite.

To see more of this triptych and other work of Allison's, click here.

Below is the Sumi-e Japanese artwork commissioned by Megan Winters for their home office.

These 8" x 12" canvases were later matted and framed

by Megan for the office.

What a beautiful mix of art and decor.

A vignette from Megan's living room.

The diptych as it was painted together so that the strokes flowed together.

A close up of the textural detail on above canvases.

Another sample of Allison's creative work is this handpainted (not stencilled)

damask door that was commissioned by designer Marjorie Skouras for her own home.

This is just a sampling of Allison's work, so you must check out her site to see more........painted floors, chinoiserie wall murals, children's wall murals and decoratively painted furniture.

Enjoy!

Megan Winters Interiors II

2016-08-08T21:10:00.000-03:00

Last week I introduced you to some colorful rooms by Megan Winters here.

Today, I wanted to share Megan's own home with you. Some of the rooms I posted last week were from this home, but I wanted you to see the whole house in context.

As you enter the foyer, you will see a lot of black and white. Upon entering the living room, gilt accents appear in the mainly black and white interior in the form of artwork, mirror/picture frames, antlers, lamps, etc.

Bright color doesn't really appear until you reach the black, white and hot pink den.

And then it really stands out in the private rooms - the bedrooms.

All in all, a most striking home with such high contrast colors with a splash of gold and the bright tones strewn throughout.

Allison Cosmos artwork.

Love the two-tone settees in the dining room.

Just a touch of red here to accent the black and white.

Family room.

I love this black, white and hot pink room.

Notice the Hermes throws on the chairs.

Megan loves Hermes as you will see.

Gorgeous bedroom!

Daughter's room?

So pretty!

Here are more Hermes pieces in their signature orange.

Moodboard Monday - Hen Party

2016-08-07T22:40:00.001-03:00

Good morning, Everyone!

I am hoping this week will not be as busy as last week.....I did well to get my posts up.

I went to Halifax, NS, last week to pick up our granddaughter who will be working in Charlottetown for the rest of the summer and, of course, staying with us. She just returned from two weeks in Basel, Switzerland, where she was part of the Canadian Highland Dancing contingent for the Basel International Tattoo, so she has had a very busy summer. She also danced in the Halifax Tattoo during the first week of July, so she's been going pretty much nonstop.

While she is here, I hope to spend some time with her taking in a few events here on the island......

She will be celebrating her 17th birthday here this week, so her parents and younger brother were over on the weekend and we had a celebratory dinner out on the weekend.......after spending the day at Basin Head beach, which was recently named one of the world's 10 best beaches!! It has singing sands.......if you haven't heard of it, you must google it.

So much about what is going on here. I hope you have all had a great week, too! I'm going to try and watch some of the Olympics this week, as well.

Now, back to the business of blogging.

Nearly every week, I think that Moodboard Monday will soon be coming to an end. And then I find a new moodboard and get inspired all over again.

This week's Hen Party was a bit tricky at times, but I think I found a few different things and naturally had to throw in a few roosters (they couldn't be avoided) - so I hope you enjoy!

Have a great day!

Megan Winters Interiors

2016-08-01T22:37:00.000-03:00

Megan Winters is a rising star and influence in the world of interiors.

After having built her high end printing business to the point the company needed more space and warehouses, Megan took it upon herself to design and decorate the new spaces.

Before long, she was decorating for family and friends and in 2009 established her own interior design business.

Her use of color saturated rooms is notable, but many of her rooms are black and white with gilt accents.......and all her rooms are very striking!

I'm featuring some of her more colorful rooms today from some of the many projects she has completed........

Enjoy!

A Blooming Cottage

2016-07-26T21:46:00.003-03:00

This floral themed and feminine cottage was designed for a Michigan couple by now retired interior designer, Patricia Woods.

The lady of the house has a decidedly green thumb and loved the idea of florals and animal themes throughout.

It definitely has an indoor garden feel and the summery colors of green, pink and yellow with touches of blue are a perfect complement to the garden theme.

A majolica collection on display.

The painted wood screen on the dining room

wall has images of majolica and teapots.

The garden colored study shows more of the owner's majolica collection, floral plates,

topiaries and the fabric has rabbits and cranes moving about.

The bed is scrumptious!

Patricia Woods loves to use vintage quilts as upholstery fabric and these

garden colors are sublime in the bedroom.

Notice this shirred vanity skirt with tassel trim......just charming!

And the use of vases of fresh florals throughout is the icing on the cake!
