Greetings from down under.

A somewhat belated but happy new year to you all! Our new year was spent enjoying the fireworks off Sydney Harbour Bridge - a sight never to be forgotten. We reached Canberra in early January and were amazed at how green and bright the city looked, courtesy of the wettest summer they've had for some time. We have been blamed for bringing the weather with us but we think the daily sunshine is perfect and aren't sure quite what the locals are moaning about!

Our base for the year is a beautiful house not far from Lake Burley Griffin so we are making the most of the extensive network of bicycle paths and walks on our doorstep. We cannot get used to the wild kangaroos grazing on the verges and the cockatoos in our trees. Amazing!

Tony has settled in to his post well, running a very busy practice in the centre of Canberra. Our remit to ' take the practice to the next level ' would appear to be a more demanding challenge than expected but we will do our best in our time here. I am due to step alongside Tony in early April to try to speed up the process. My five shoulder repairs appear to have been a great success, helped along by daily sunbathing and swimming so I aim to pick up the drill again soon!

We hope to start seeing more of Australia and New Zealand once we get the practice on an even keel, taking weekends away as much as possible. We have managed one trip to the southern coast of New South Wales to a lovely town called Kiama where we were hosted by a great dentist we've met..........another Tony!

We are missing all our team and patients back in Stratford but are delighted with the way Rob has slotted into the practice. He certainly seems to be very popular with everyone and his experience and skills are a welcome addition to the practice. We will certainly want to keep him in our team when we return and we would be incredibly grateful for any help you can give us to establish a list of patients for Rob. Please do refer anyone you think would appreciate all that we offer at Stratford Dental.

We will send regular updates from Oz and will be back for three weeks in July to celebrate Tony's 50th and our Silver Wedding Anniversary so hope to see some of you at the practice then!

Good Dental Hygiene Essential in Fight Against Heart Disease
Research suggests link between oral health and heart health

Sacramento, Calif. — As part of February's American Heart Month, and in an effort to increase oral health awareness, the California Dental Association is encouraging you to practice good oral hygiene habits to help keep your mouth and heart healthy.

Studies have demonstrated an association between periodontal diseases and cardiovascular disease and stroke. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, people with gum disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease than those without. While several theories exist to explain the link, it is believed that oral bacteria can affect the heart by attaching to fatty plaques in the coronary arteries, contributing to clot formation.

"Prevention is the key to a healthy mouth," said CDA President Dan Davidson, DMD. "Beyond the connection to your heart and overall health, good oral hygiene and regular dental care is essential in preventing dental pain and reducing the risk of cavities and more serious dental problems from developing."

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Americans suffer more than 2 million heart attacks and strokes each year and cardiovascular disease – including heart disease and stroke – is the leading cause of death in the United States. Heart disease kills roughly the same number of people in the nation each year as cancer, lower respiratory diseases (including pneumonia), and accidents combined.

To keep your teeth and gums healthy and to help reduce the risk of heart disease, CDA suggests a regular routine of brushing with a fluoride toothpaste for two minutes at least twice a day. Replace your toothbrush every three to four months and be sure to floss regularly, exercise and eat a healthy diet. In addition, visit your CDA member dentist for a check-up twice a year.

Julie joined the practice in 2009 and has become an invaluable member of the clinical team. Having graduated as a Dental Therapist in 2003, Julie has developed a calm and gentle approach to her work and she is extremely popular with her patients. Her skills mean that Julie is ideally placed to provide dental care to our younger patients and as a dental therapist she is able to place fillings and carry out extractions under the prescription of the dentists, in addition to her work as a hygienist.

Michelle graduated in Texas in 2003 and moved to the UK in 2005. She is an extremely sought after and gentle hygienist, working not only with us at Stratford Dental, but also in a private practice in Warwick.

Michelle has two children, an emergency room nurse and an IT whizz.

Michelle prides herself on not "nagging" patients, she concentrates on gently removing what she calls the "barnacles" attached to peoples roots, restoring their gums back to great health.

Michelle works with us on Thursdays and even Saturdays, so if you need hygienist care out of normal hours, just give us a call!
