It is now a way of life. News and updates are received through a social timeline allowing you and I to find out what is happening in the lives of friends and family as well as world events all in real time wherever we are. social media has changed the way we use the internet. We receive small chunks of information; easily digestible. But what does this mean for business?

One of the first questions I ask a potential client is: "How much traffic does your website receive and where is it coming from?" Okay that's two questions. The answer is almost always the same: "We don't know / How do I find that out? / Can you actually do that?"
It's distressing to know that so few people pay attention to their website or even know what their website does for them.

There is no doubting we're in the midst of a digital revolution. Perhaps this is the way things were always going to go or perhaps the recent economic downturns have forced businesses to reinvent themselves. Either way, businesses are having to adapt to survive. The internet has created an entire industry that is rapidly changing the way consumers interact with brands. The traditional sales funnel is morphing in to a variety of channels aimed at meeting cinsumers where they are. If your message isn't being 'pushed' to the consumer and 'pulling' them to your website, well, you're left behind.

Facebook has changed the way many people interact with the internet. In fact, many people who didn't interact with the internet have started to as a result of social media. I know that my own mother has started to use Facebook. Which is bizarre as she wouldn't know how to book a flight online or even how to search through Google but engages with friends online quite easily. This rise in popularity has given rise to a new acronym in the online marketing world - SMM (Social media Marketing). So why has social media so important to business?

A little while ago I was chatting to a client about advertising. Specifically, print advertising. He was contemplating running an advertisement in a well known mens publication but was battling to justify the cost - about R40k. His main concern was around tracking how effective the advert would be. Without placing some sort of coupon or QR code or tracking code, the only numbers he could use were the circulation figures given by the publication itself.

The internet is all about communication. It has opened up a variety of channels to get your message out there. We consumer more information more often than ever before. This is why online marketing is evolving at such an enormous pace.

So why do you have a website? Think about it. Most people don't. It seems to usually fall under the business essentials checklist: Logo, Business cards, Website.

All too often a website is just there because "Our clients expect us to have one".
Few people actually take the time to think about their website as the most valuable marketing tool they have available. Over the next few weeks I'm going to write about the reasons you should have a website and more importantly why it should be at the centre of your marketing strategy.
