I actually had a friend who told me a lot about how relaxing fishing, and especially fly fishing could be. "Fishing requires such intense concentration and awareness of the environment that when you're out on a stream, you can't think of anything else."

If you haven't noticed, fishing is not on my "Activities" list. I've never been much of a fisherman. Never had enough patience. When I was a kid I had a Scoleciphiobia ( the fear of the worms ).

But now I start realizing that fishing is more than just fish. I think one of the best parts of fly fishing is the sense of escapism. It allows you to get alway from all of the strains in your life and all of the things that consume your life: work, family, relationships, etc. And some of the places look so amazing that it makes you feel blessed just to be alive...

In winter, mountain biking takes a back seat to snow sports in our state, and many bikers put away their "knobby tires " till spring in favor of skis and snowboards.

But the most hard core mountain bikers stay loyal to their sport no matter what...A few, will go even further, by challenging skiers and snowboarders on their own turf, in their own environment. If you've been following my blog for some time, you know that one of my goals on my Bucket List is to ski at all ski areas in Washington state. So far I've visited 7 out of 12 Washington ski areas...

Mt Baker still remains on my list...though, technically, I've skied there twice during the Ski to Sea races 2009/2010

But I would love to come back for some epic powder skiing in its famous side-country, and hopefully summit it this summer...

"South Park" is my favorite show ! It's the smartest show on American TV, and, personally, I think it should be part of the American public education system.

If I want to find out what's going on in this country, all I have to do is to watch a new episode ( that's how I found out Obama won the election in ...)

If you're new to snowshoeing and are ready to buy your first pair, you might get overwhelmed by all the brands, types, and styles. When I got introduced to this popular winter activity 4 years ago, and figured out what had worked for me, I tried to make it easier for my readers to make a choice by writing a short post on how to chose your snowshoes.

During my last snowshoe outing with EverGreen Escapes I used a pair of MSR Evo Snow Shoes

Light, durable, and unisex,they also have good cleats that are equally suited to backcountry travel and groomed trails. Climbing the somewhat steep slopes of the Paradise Valley was easy and enjoyable. But on the way down I really envied skiers and snowboarders blasting past us on their split boards and BC skis.

Recently, I read about one German company that had designed a unique pair of snowshoes that double as a sort of short ski or glider.

While this snowshoes won't exactly tackle the same range of terrain that a pair of big mountain skis would, they will allow you to hike uphill and then glide back down rather than stumbling your way down step by step.

Snowshoeing at Mt Rainier is #1 on the list of "10 Ways To Experience Mt. Rainier This Winter" suggested by the official website for Mt. Rainier travel and vacations. With more than 16 trails of various length and difficulty, it might be a bit overwhelming to decide where to go, especially if you're new to the area ( or snowshoeing in general ).

After my last snowshoe trip , I finally decided to pull the plug on this hobby, sold my snowshoes, and was getting ready to switch to ski touring. Skiing up to Camp Muir and then down to Paradise has been on my Bucket List for a while. But after our "failed" attempt to reach Paradise in December, I was a bit freaked out to drive there and almost gave up to ever see Mt Rainier in winter.

Before, I mentioned that there were a few ways to visit the park...but mostly in summer. If you're visiting our state ( or like me, hate driving ) in winter you're pretty much limited to : driving with a friend, renting a car, or joining EverGreen Escapes on their Full-Day Mt. Rainier Snowshoe Tour

Unlike big tour buses, their small (but luxury ) Mercedes van provides intimate atmosphere and a chance to get to know people you're traveling with. We made our first stop at Kautz Creek trail head to stretch our legs, get a cup of coffee with some pastries, and to snap a "preview of the Mountain".

At Paradise, we strapped on our snowshoes, and after a short briefing were on our way to explore the park's winter trails.

Another thing I loved about the tour was "the freedom to roam". Unlike many "organized trips" I've been on before, the atmosphere during this trip was very casual.

Though, you are expected to stay with the group, you can still keep up your own pace. If during the summer months you would have to stick to the trail, in winter you can chose to use the existing trails, or feel free to forge your own path !

My only concern was about a few people, who might have underestimated "the Mountain". I can't stress enough the importance of being prepared in the outdoors, and especially in the mountains.

Weather in the park is notoriously quick to change, and sudden storms can appear with little or no warning...

Though it was a picture perfect bluebird day, the wind was reaching 25-30 MPH with the temperatures in the low 30's. A couple people were not wearing any headgear, gloves, another person was wearing very light hiking shoes...Our guide mentioned that a week before they had to hike in complete white-out conditions.

Remember, surviving in the mountains is not just challenging, it's also expensive :

I've been a big fan of Columbia sportswear for a long time; comparing to the North Face, Marmot, or Patagonia, Columbia brand is more affordable, yet stylish and offers great quality.

But even being a loyal customer, I took my some time to give Omni Heat a try.

For this winter season I went with Columbia Lhotse Mountain Parka.

The jacket consists of 2 layers : waterproof breathable jacket and interior "puffy" jacket with Omni Heat system.

Last Sunday ( 1/28/12 ) was THE WETTEST day on the mountain for the past 4 years I've been working there. The rain was pouring non stop since morning all the way till 4 pm.

As part of our uniform we are required to wear Outdoor Research jacket/pants/zip up jacket. Within an hour I was soaking wet.

After a short brake, I decide to put on my "puffy" Columbia jacket with Omni Heat system underneath my OR soft shell ( which was still wet and cold ).

For the next 2 hours I felt like I was wrapped in the blanket of surreal warm sunshine, feeling the internal temperature continue to climb....

As I've mentioned above it was the wettest day I've ever skied in my life. And while my OR jacket was soaked through, my Columbia liner got wet in just a few places ( elbows and shoulders ).

But I'm 100% sure that if I'd worn my nylon jacket, I'd have been fine.

Kids these days...Start snowboarding while still wearing diapers, by 9 they rock terrain parks with amazing freesking moves, at 12 they fly kites and rip the waves in stormy North Sea.

But how old a kid should be to fly a paraglider ? They say "start them young". But how young ? 15, 16 ? How about 7-10 ? Too young ?

I think this boy is about that age...:

I already wrote about great heli-skiing opportunities that Troll’s Peninsula in Iceland offers.

But not many people know Iceland as a great surfing destination.

Keep Yourself Warm Between Ski Runs With ...Snuggie

I've never thought I'd actually wear one !
I've always thought that Snuggie was the choice of bored and desperate housewives.

I bought one for my son to wear early in the morning when the car is not yet warmed up. While driving him to school, Snuggie would keep him warm and comfortable to catch a few extra minutes of those sweet dreams.

The last few days the snow was dumping in and around Seattle, and though after two days it stopped in the city, it continued in the mountains.

Honestly, I'm not a big fan of NW snow weather : the snow is usually wet, it's always cold when it snows, with that piercing wind that numbs your face and turns your gloves into solid ice.

Just like everybody else, usually I just turn on my car and wait for the heater, but this time I turned around and saw my son's Snuggie...

Within minutes I felt warm and dry ( except for my feet that were still in my ski boots ), and unlike using a sleeping bag or a blanket, with Snuggie I could use my hands to make myself a snack and pour a cup of hot coffee.

For many " outdoorsy "/extra hyperactive people different seasons mean different outdoor activities. If it's summer, it's usually hiking, biking, water sports, camping and backpacking. If it's winter, it has to be skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing or sledding/tubing...

But some folks stay loyal to their favorite sport no matter what season it is out there.

Personally, till recently I've never thought about paragliding as a winter activity ( though, in Washington most pilots fly all year round weather permitting ).
