Where is Churchill When We Need Him?

Belmont Club has a great post on Winston Churchill in the early days of World War II, when Britain stood alone against the horde. Invasion loomed and the government was ready to capitulate to Hitler and National Socialism. Churchill knew that submission would mean the end of the Empire. Through the force of his will he convinced the War Cabinet to resist to the end. The rest is history, more or less. Here’s the money quote, from a speech to a people on the brink of devastation:

In truth, the June 4 speech was pure defiance. It contained but one thought. No. No to Hitler. No whatever the cost.

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God’s good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.

Lord, where are the Churchills, the Thatchers, the Reagans today when we need them?

Do You Read Blogs You Disagree With?

Bloggers tend to be a clubby lot, hanging with those they agree with. Some folks occasionally, grudgingly read blogs from opposing viewpoints. Henry Neufeld lists Five Sites I Read Because I Disagree. I think I’m with Henry- we need to read opposing views, not so that we can oppose them, but to better understand. I’m pretty horrible at that.

Beloit College has put out their annual Mindset List for the entering Class of 2014.

Each August since 1998, Beloit College has released the Beloit College Mindset List. It provides a look at the cultural touchstones that shape the lives of students entering college this fall. The creation of Beloit’s Keefer Professor of the Humanities Tom McBride and former Public Affairs Director Ron Nief, it was originally created as a reminder to faculty to be aware of dated references, and quickly became a catalog of the rapidly changing worldview of each new generation.

Here’s a taste of of what the current generation knows, and doesn’t know.

Most students entering college for the first time this fall—the Class of 2014—were born in 1992.
For these students, Benny Hill, Sam Kinison, Sam Walton, Bert Parks and Tony Perkins have always been dead.

1. Few in the class know how to write in cursive.
2. Email is just too slow, and they seldom if ever use snail mail.
7. “Caramel macchiato” and “venti half-caf vanilla latte” have always been street corner lingo.
8. With increasing numbers of ramps, Braille signs, and handicapped parking spaces, the world has always been trying harder to accommodate people with disabilities.
11. John McEnroe has never played professional tennis.
12. Clint Eastwood is better known as a sensitive director than as Dirty Harry.
18. Fergie is a pop singer, not a princess.
19. They never twisted the coiled handset wire aimlessly around their wrists while chatting on the phone.
20. DNA fingerprinting and maps of the human genome have always existed.
22. Cross-burning has always been deemed protected speech.
26. Unless they found one in their grandparents’ closet, they have never seen a carousel of Kodachrome slides.
28. They’ve never recognized that pointing to their wrists was a request for the time of day.
32. Czechoslovakia has never existed.
33. Second-hand smoke has always been an official carcinogen.
38. Bud Selig has always been the Commissioner of Major League Baseball.
41. American companies have always done business in Vietnam.
43. Russians and Americans have always been living together in space.
44. The dominance of television news by the three networks passed while they were still in their cribs.
46. Nirvana is on the classic oldies station.
47. Children have always been trying to divorce their parents.
52. There have always been women priests in the Anglican Church.
57. A purple dinosaur has always supplanted Barney Google and Barney Fife.
60. Walmart has never sold handguns over the counter in the lower 48.
62. Having hundreds of cable channels but nothing to watch has always been routine.
63. Their parents’ favorite TV sitcoms have always been showing up as movies.
67. Ruth Bader Ginsburg has always sat on the Supreme Court.
68. They have never worried about a Russian missile strike on the U.S.
71. The nation has never approved of the job Congress is doing.
72. One way or another, “It’s the economy, stupid” and always has been.
75. Honda has always been a major competitor on Memorial Day at Indianapolis.

What else? They’ve never actually ‘dialed’ a telephone. Their music has always been digital.

Fight’s On!

Had a most excellent time last weekend at a gunfighting class, courtesy of a long-time friend. The course was an intro to Point Shooting Progression (PSP) and Force-on-Force Gunfighting put on by the Suarez International. It was taught by the most excellent Roger Phillips from Fight Focused Concepts. Roger is a long-time Suarez instructor and knows his stuff cold. We were at a beautiful facility above Cripple Creek.
